Yeah, Warchant blows, but Section B is pretty good.

Exactly right. Although the natives are getting restless about the lack of college world series success, and I heard legitimate musings about firing Martin for the first time after their last 0-2 and barbeque.

They are actually pretty good and level headed for the most part. Martin is a helluva coach, but he's just so damn old school.

Seminoles punter Gano scheduled for surgery, expected to miss 4-6 weeks

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State punter Graham Gano is scheduled to have surgery on his right knee and will be out 4-6 weeks.

Gano suffered cartilage damage at practice Monday, and will undergo the procedure Friday. He has been handling all kicking duties for the Seminoles, meaning his loss leaves holes at punter and kicker.

Redshirt sophomore Zach Hobby will take over most of the kicking duties, and freshman Shawn Powell is expected to punt in Gano's absence.

Florida State also said linebacker Aaron Gresham and defensive back Ed Imeokparia will miss the season with torn knee ligaments. Both players had season-ending surgeries Wednesday.

In addition to Marve, Miami suspends six more players for opener

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Miami coach Randy Shannon wanted to avoid a quarterback controversy similar to last year, so he declared Robert Marve his starter Sunday night.

Marve's first start for the Hurricanes will have to wait until Game 2, however.

He and six others were suspended by coach Randy Shannon for the Hurricanes' opener and debut at Dolphins Stadium Thursday night against Charleston Southern.

Marve, a redshirt freshman, will miss the game due to an incident stemming back to last year. He was arrested Oct. 31 for smashing a car mirror and was initially charged with two misdemeanors. Those were later lifted, but Marve is being punished by the University now.

Beamer plans to redshirt Taylor, names Glennon starter
Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said Tuesday he wants to redshirt quarterback Tyrod Taylor, and that Sean Glennon will be the Hokies' starting quarterback this season.

Taylor, who played last year as a true freshman, will dress this year and travel with the team. Cory Holt will be the No. 2 quarterback. Beamer entered this summer with the goal of heading into the season opener with one quarterback, not two.

"We're going to try to redshirt Tyrod Taylor," Beamer said at his weekly press conference. "I think in the long term, thinking about our football program, if we could get this done this is what we need to do. If we can stay away from injuries and play well as an offense and get this thing done, this is good for Tyrod, having a year and continuing to learn and develop. He's only going to get better and better."

I read this earlier myself, about Taylor. It surprises me and it doesn't surprise me. Long-term, it's clearly the only choice and probably what they would have done ages ago, and if they can keep the redshirt on him all year, having him for that extra year would be huge. But Tech has no wide receivers and no running backs, and the thinking recently was that they'd have to use Taylor just to keep the offense from stagnating.

I think it further reduces their chances of landing Kevin Newsome, though. I think I'm the only one on the whole Internets who is saying this, but I'll press on with that point of view til proven wrong. Scholarship limitations and Taylor now sticking around for an extra year....it just doesn't add up.

Bear in mind this comes at a time of transition at the top of the program. It has long been wondered (outside of Tallahassee anyway) whether Bobby Bowden created a program or if he WAS the program. In other words, will FSU still be a power when BB leaves.

But now, as we approach the time for his departure:
  • Their dominance of the ACC is already over
  • They still have not fully endowed all 85 football scholarships
    • This was done so long ago at tOSU that most Buckeye fans don't even know what it means
  • They still don't have an indoor practice facility
    • And what they have on the drawing board is nothing near the WHAC
  • They haven't even begun to raise the funds for that facility they have on the drawing board
Make no mistake, the Seminoles face an uphill climb to stay relevant in the world of college football. People keep waiting for their return to glory. Some will proclaim it every time they win an ACC championship, which might be once a decade or so. But until they get another Bobby Bowden, their next day in the sun may be a long time coming.

The lack of an indoor training facility cost the Seminoles 3 days of playing time during Tropical Storm Fay's long vacation in Tallahassee. What with losing all that practice time, plus getting a completely different group of players ready to play game one than the group that has to be ready to play game four, this could be an all-timer of a crap-fest for Bowden.

Those who seem to know have said this could well be Paterno's last year. But there is no way that Bowden will want what is coming this year to be his swan song.
