2008-2009 Ohio State Men's Track and Cross Country

I am certainly not the expert:wink2: on the Ohio State track team but I highly doubt it if they will bring someone for the "jumps". Well speed does play a factor, there is also a lot of technique involved in the jumping events and I think the same goes for sprints and relays. I would think that if the football players do not participate in many track practices I doubt if they will be allowed to run IMO
You are correct that Gary wouldn't bring anyone in to jump... if they haven't jumped before. My guess is that if one of the football players was a great jumper in high school and they got the Tressel's blessing then they could jump. Case in point: Michael Jenkins was a long jumper for Ohio State his junior year.

You are definitely on point regarding the not practicing, not participating statement. My guess is any of the football players that are running indoor are getting enough practice time in so they can participate in spring ball then finish the outdoor season, especially since the Big10 Outdoor Championships are at Ohio State this year... which by the way the athletes have to meet a certain standard just to participate in the Championships.

Donny Roys has given a verbal commitment to the Buckeyes Cross Country and Track teams.
Roys won state as a junior in XC and has an impressive on the track, track record. He is also a beast at steeple.
Where did Roys go to high school?

EDIT: I just looked it up. Roys is graduating from Medina HS this year. Below is his MileSplit profilie:

The Buckeyes should have a pretty elite mid distance squad this year. Just off the top of my head, Jeff See, Jake Edwards, Corey Lesley, Dan White, and Jared Hall.
Buckeyes had arguably the best recruiting class for 400 and up in some time. Also, anyone notice Thomas Murdaugh's victory in the 400? Pretty impressive for a freshmen. Devier Posey beat him at state last year in the 400:

in jumps i was referring to what bk said in maybe someone has done jumps before and the team is weak in that area so he asks. i can't think of anyone off the top of my head, but maybe/hopefully if someone has that background? in terms of practicing/participating there always seems to be at least one late addition to the team every year. two years ago, chekwa, jenkins, and potokar came out for the drakes and big10's were only a month later. last year, robiskie came out for big10's with minimal practices as well. it seems like it's after the spring game that they are turned loose to the track team.

I watched Ryan Barber and Murdaugh battle each other at Regionals last year. Their finish was just as close as Posey and Murdaugh in the State finals.

I've been keeping tabs on Barber since middle school. I remember seeing some results where he was in the 52-53 range as a 7th grader... the kid has great talent and is pretty good on the football field too.

I agree. And he is young. Central Ohio has some talented sprints guys with Barber and Blake Heriot. If we can get both of them, or at least one of them to OSU, it would be huge. Blake Heriot is probably the fastest sophomore I've ever seen. This year he is a Junior and I look for him to do big things. I heard he was on a visit for the Michigan State game the other day and is giving OSU a serious look.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's track and field team capped off a solid weekend at the Penn State National Invitational Saturday at the Horace Ashenfelter Indoor Track in University Park, Pa. Despite resting a number of key athletes, the Buckeyes still turned in their share of Top 5 finishes and saw some youngsters rise to the occasion.

"Thomas Murdaugh had a fantastic run in the 400, along with Daniel White," head coach Robert Gary said. "Matt DeChant had a huge breakthrough in the shot and Chad Balyo had a superb mile run.

"I thought we performed real well overall. We sat some kids, but will run everyone at Notre Dame when Jeff See and Dan White head over for the Boston Indoor Games. We need to continue to improve in all areas if we hope to do as well as we did last year at the Big Ten championships - that's the goal."

In the 400m finals, freshman Thomas Murdaugh stole the show with a first-place showing in a PR time of 47.37, more than a full second head of second-place Jermaine Lowery of Pittsburgh. Junior Curtis Leuenberger finished second in the 200m with a time of 21.84. In the 500m run, junior Brandon Woodard took second place with a time of 1:04.28 - just .06 seconds behind the winning time.

Thomas Murdaugh is going to be a star in the 400. He is huge and has a nice 400 stride to go along with great work ethic. 47's inside is crazy for a freshman.
Yep... definitely has the potential to be OSU's best 400 runner since Andrew Pierce. Smooth runner and has the power to finish the race strong. He kind of reminds me of all those 400 runners that Baylor gets year in and year out.

OSU should be able to put together some good Medley's this year considering their strongest events to my knowledge look to be stretched out between the 400 and the mile.
Can anyone thing of a time when we had a better mid-distance squad?
Does anyone know if this is Jeff See's final year of track eligibility? I sort of remember him having to take some time off.

On a side note, I chatted with Jeff See's father at Big Ten XC when it was in Columbus in 2007. He said Jeff gets really bad side cramps, which is uncharacteristic of really top notch runners like himself. I assume that's why his times can be kinda of all over the place at times.

Jeff is a Senior for indoor, Junior for outdoor (redshirted in 2007 after his freshman year)

the entire throws team is strong too. they're putting up big distances for frosh/soph this early in the season and as a result pushing the seniors which is great. there should be a handful well over 60ft in shot and weight when they hit peak training strength at the end of the season.

also, from the penn st invitational: gary was so impressed (that 47 indoor 400 was unreal like you guys mentioned), with the performances there that the team may be rewarded in getting to travel south to get some warm weather work in.
