2008-09 Men's Basketball Polls/Seeding Projections/Rankings Discussion

Seven teams from the Big 10 making the tournament would probably be unprecedented for the Big 10 and what would the Big East and ACC have to say about that.

I would think for Ohio State to get a #1 seed they would have to remain undefeated during the rest of the nonconference schedule and maybe only lose 1, and at the most, 2 games in the Big 10.

i didn't recognize the new avatar. i just skipped your post and figured you were a newbie. for us to get a #1 we can probably lose 1 maybe 2 games depending on who we beat and how high they are ranked.

No newbie respect:huh: In some people's eyes I still am. I thought what you said about one or two losses is exactly what I said:confused:

I think a 26-3 regular season with a BTT championship (meaning a 29-3 record going into the NCAA tourney) would land OSU a #1 seed because you have to keep in mind the competition isn't quite as stiff as it was last year - you have North Carolina, who's practically a lock for a #1 seed, and then everybody else. Nobody outside of UNC is likely to be a run away champ of a good BCS league this year, so if OSU does run away with the Big Ten (15-3 or better), then I think they will get a #1 seed. Teams like Louisville, Duke and Gonzaga have already lost games to "lesser" teams while OSU has not.

If you recall the last OSU team to get a #1 seed - that was soooo long ago  - did VERY LITTLE in nonconference play in terms of "quality wins" - winning at home vs. Tennessee was really their only good nonconference win. Winning @ Miami, vs. ND at a neutral site and vs. Butler has already put this year's OSU team ahead of the pace that that OSU team was on & if they beat WVU, they will be waaaay ahead of that OSU team entering conference play. If you couple that with the fact that the Big Ten is much stronger RPI-wise than in 06-07, then you have a recipe for a much larger margin for losses in Big Ten play than that team had. Thus (assuming wins through the rest of the nonconference games), 15-3 and a BTT title will likely = #1 seed for OSU. No team in the SEC is even close to being good enough for a #1 seed. UCLA (or someone else) running away with the Pac-10 is possible, but none of their teams will be able to get as a group of strong nonconference wins that as OSU AND they play in a clearly weaker RPI league. I don't see any mid-majors getting #1 seeds this year. So basically the top candidates for a #1 seed (beyond UNC) includes UConn, Pitt, OSU, either Texas or Oklahoma (it's practically impossible for both to get #1 seeds), and a Duke team that's already lost to Michigan. Five teams for three spots. Would a 29-3 OSU team beat out Texas or Oklahoma? I would think so. I would also think they would have a better profile than the #2 Big East team and the #2 ACC team.

Teams I see making the tournament are the seven that won yesterday (Ohio State, Purdue, Michigan State, Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin).

I agree that the only way Ohio State gets a #1 seed is if they finish the regular season with only 1 or 2 losses... but as much as I would love to see OSU only lose 1 or 2 conference games I don't see it. Heck, I think the regular season conference winner will have at least 3 losses and this year it is not because the conference is not strong but rather the top 7 teams are all playing some pretty good ball and will beat each other. My prediction is the Big10 winner will get a #2 seed and 3 other teams will be in the 3-5 range.

ESPN - NCAA College Basketball Polls, College Basketball Rankings, NCAA Basketball Polls

OSU coming in at #15 in the AP, #13 in the Coaches.

Of note:

AP
8. Notre Dame
10. Purdue
11. Michigan State
14. Xavier
15. Ohio State
23. Minnesota
24. Michigan

Coaches
11. Notre Dame
12. Xavier
13. Ohio State
15. Purdue
18. Michigan State
23. Minnesota

Not a lot of love for the Big 10 considering how well it performed this past week.
Every Big 10 team could probably beat Notre Dame and they still would be ranked. I don't think this is a bad ranking for the Big 10. Four in one poll and five in another isn't too shabby. Granted they aren't ranked very high which troubles me some because once we get into Big 10 play there will be little room to move up.

The fact that we have 5 in one poll is great. The fact that we have a top team of 10 in one and 13 in the other is what is bothering me.

We are on the same page. I understand but you know there is always going to be that love for the ACC and the Big East teams when it comes to basketball. I think one of the problems the Big 10 faced during the nonconference schedule is not one of our teams had a very brutal schedule and the one that did, MSU, did not do very well until this past Saturday.

AP and the Coaches sure do have different opinions about Sparty.
And Purdue... top 10 in one poll and behind Ohio State in the other. I'm not sold the Buckeyes are a better team (yet), especially without Lighty. I'll be happy to be wrong on this point though. :)

I would have to think that a 3-loss Big Ten champ team (assuming no early conference tournament exit) gets a #1 seed. I seriously doubt that's the Buckeyes though. I would expect a 10-6 Big Ten record with a win in the tournament, resulting in a 3 seed.
