2008-09 Men's Basketball Polls/Seeding Projections/Rankings Discussion

5 winning seasons and no NCAA tourney bids in almost 10 years does that for ya. It's kinda the opposite of us in football when in previous years a 5-2 Michigan team would be in like the Top 15 and some smaller team would be 7-0 and ranked like #20... It's a respect factor. Michigan still has to earn it all back. If you changed our schedule with Michigan State or a team of that respected caliber, and they had our record they'd be in the Top 15.
This is very hard for me to say to a "Michigan:( Fan" but I almost have to agree with you. Past respect is a big factor when it comes to polling.

If you beat on two occasions the #4 team in the land and you have no bad losses....you should crack the top 25........

I agree with you that Michigan should be ranked based on what they've done this year. I was just justifying some voters motives were for not ranking us. That being said, we have 3 games in the next 20 days.. As long as we don't blow one of those three games we should be ranked going into Big 10 play.

mid teens is good for this point in the season. i would like to see one or two other big10 teams in the top 5 or 10 though. that way if we were able to beat them later in the season it would give us more upside.

I wholeheartedly agree with 14-0's assessment. We are in a very good position for this point in the season. For one thing, we completely dominated a team ranked five spots ahead of us, regardless of the final score. Right now, we need for the other Big Ten teams to represent well, especially OOC. I certainly don't think we will go undefeated all season, but if we can only lose in tough games, we should be in the top 10 going into conference tournament time. Barring an amazing run thru the sched, the realistic goal would be a top 8 seed in the NCAAs (overall, not regional). I didn't see the Butler game (it sounded dissapointing), but I like the character of the team, and like our chances in close games.

Since this is partly a seeding projections thread, here's some info on that topic - according to the Bracket Project, which compiles a composite of several brackets updated recently, here are where Big Ten teams are projected at this point:

4 seed - Purdue
5 seed - OSU, MSU
7 seed - Michigan
8 seed - Wisconsin
10 seed - Illinois
12 seed - Minnesota
"Next four out" - Northwestern
No votes - PSU, Iowa, Indiana

As for other teams OSU has played/will play, here are their seeds (if any):
4 seed - Notre Dame
8 seed - Miami
10 seed - WVU
12 seed - Butler

The Bracket Project's Bracket Matrix

I believe OSU is on pace for a #2 seed and they have an outside shot at a #1 seed (they would have to win the rest of their nonconference games, go something like 15-3 in the Big Ten and win the conference tourney to get a 1 seed).
