There's no question that Michigan lacks talent on defense. But this is not a new issue with Michigan. Heck, if you go back to last season, they barely squeaked out a win against Bowling Green...at home. And that was a team that many considered the rightful opponent for OSU in the BCS Bowl. Granted, they don't have Leon Hall, or Lamarr Woodley or Alan Branch this season. But from the last three games, the pattern has returned to normal...Michigan is starting to beat teams that suck even more than they do. And there is a lot of teams that suck more than they do in the Big Ten. This is no joke. They killed ND. They beat PSU. They knocked off NW. This is Michigan cruising in the a sea of mediocrity and below mediocrity. My bet is that they'll have a pretty decent record by the time the Game rolls around.

The worst team in the B10 that tsun plays this year is Northwestern and they just gave tsun all they could handle. A decent QB for NU and they win that game. The scheme makes that much of a difference vs tsun this year and their next 4 opponents all run the spread.

EMU
Purdue
@Illinois
Minny

Whats different this year from last is that tsun is even worse on defense vs spread teams and Illinois, Minny, and Purdue all run the spread much better than NU, which gives any of them at least a punchers chance. Illinois is improving week to week so I wouldn't judge them based on week 1 vs mizzou without J Williams for most of the game. They have the best combo of athletes, scheme and home field to be the B10 spread team that beats tsun this year.

@MSU
@Wisky
tOSU

Thats a flat ass brutal way to end a season. IMO they could easily lose 2 of 3 if not all 3. No PSU's or ND's in that group. Just 3 teams that can match you athlete for athlete, 2 have a significant home field and one that ownes your ass.

I say they end up 7-5/8-4 at best with another loss in The Game, a loss to a 1-AA team and go out "winners" in the who-gives-a-fuck.com Bowl. Thats if they get matched up against a team that can't run any type of spread offense or learn to run it in the month before the Bowls. They get some mid major, pass happy spread team and they could very well end the season just like they started it.

Mostly good points, but that one's hardly fair. One, Michigan's getting judged on Week 1 all year. Two, surely Michigan's improving week to week just as Illinois is.
Not realy judging them on week one. They have the same DB's all seasons and they are too slow to play zone and they don't have enough DB's to play the spread against 4 or 5 fast wr's. they have the same problem ND has had the last several years. Slow db's. The D line and Linebackers may improve as you suggest but they can't fix the DB's

I'm not judging tsun by week 1. I am going by what I saw last week within the recent historical context of tsuns struggles with spread teams.

Spread team-L
spread team-L bad
hapless pansy-W
1972 offense team-W (maybe :wink2:)
really really bad spread team-W but struggle big time

Maybe I'm wrong but I think the scheme is just that lethal to you guys this year. Purdue will tell a lot. If you struggle with EMU you are in a lot of trouble for the next 3 games. If Hart succumbs to the 30+ carry beatings every week you are going to be scrambling for any W you can get.

Are they really improving that much? They beat an inept N_tre _ame, an equally offensively inept PSU and then struggled mightily with a B-10 cellar dwellar that lost to friggin' dook. I'd lay good money on ttun dropping 2-3 more games at least. The offense is stuck in the stone ages, Mike Hart is gonna be ground down to a stump (I think he's already showing signs averaging around 3.5 ypc against a horrible NW) and the defense is seriously lacking in talent. You guys just aren't a very good team this year.

Go out winners, eh?

If there is a God, Michigan will get Texas Tech in the Alamo Bowl ... :sneaky:

UM's Henne plans to start against EMU

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

ANN ARBOR - When Michigan quarterback Chad Henne faced a rush of questions yesterday about his injured right knee and his status for this weekend's game with Eastern Michigan, he did not sidestep or scramble. Henne, the fourth-year starter who missed two games in the first month of the season after spraining his knee in the first half of a blow-out loss to Oregon, stood erect and seemed to re-
assert himself as the guy in charge of this offense.

Mike Massey out for the year. Left Knee Surgery Required.

Bad news for TSUN.

The season has ended for Michigan senior tight end Mike Massey.
Massey, the starter, injured his left knee in Saturday's victory over Northwestern and will have surgery this week, coach Lloyd Carr said Monday. Massey has one year of eligibility remaining.
"That is a big loss for our team," Carr said. "Massey was a wonderful competitor, a guy that brought a lot to the team, outstanding on our special teams and has done a great job at tight end."
Massey had four catches for 38 yards and was often used as a blocker.
Junior Carson Butler likely will assume the starting role, and Chris McLaurin and Andre Criswell will be the backups. Butler leads the tight ends with four catches for 55 yards and a touchdown.

I, like TressBeliever, would not be too surprised to see scUM win out up to The Game.
I also, like JaxBuck, would not be surprised to see them lose 2 to 4 more games between now and then.
Nothing this team does can surprise me now. They can look like a ball control, keep your defense on the field all day monster. And then within the same game, they can look like the most inept team in the big ten - especially on defense.

Realistically, I expect them to lose at least 2 more games before we play them.

Their game against MSU will be the best metric to judge their defense against our offense. I don't think there's any way to judge our defense against their offense (except maybe PSU) because of our team speed.
All I am certain of there is that we will do better than last year, defensively.

They will have all they can handle with Purdue, MSU, Wisky, and maybe Illinois.

At the start of the season, I had psychologically accepted that we would probably lose to scUM, but now that has become unacceptable. I hope our offense shows up and we send LLLoyd out on a low note.

on espn they just said that henne has a partial tear of a knee ligament. didn't say which one. But they did say he is still atop the depth chart.

Although Lllloyd is a crappy coach (IMO), he is very well respected as being a coach who cares about his kids and will do whats best for them etc.

I gotta tell ya, running Michael Hart 40 times/game (in unnecessary situations), and letting a senior QB with a likelihood of being a first day pick play with a partial ligament tear in his knee (if he indeed play under these circumstances) seem like he is getting desperate without concern for their future....
