PHEW. Scout reports McGuffie faxed in his LOI to Michigan this evening. Looking forward to having #2 playing jump-the-Buckeye for four years
It sure is kind to return the favor for the boston SI cover. Laur, Sabino, Gibson, etc would love to see him try that stunt.

Grading the class by position. Factors considered: overall talent of the individuals/group, depth, potential for growth.

QB, C+: Justin Feagin--looks like a solid athlete. Hard to make a determination in how good he will ever be. Would think he gets some PT this year, but I don't think he will beat out Steven Threet yet to become the starter.
RB, A-: Sam McGuffie and Mike Cox--probably fits new-UM offense better than old-UM. Zone option should maximize his skills. Good fit. Not sure about Cox, but I'd guess a RS year is in store for him.
WR, A-: Michael Shaw, Roy Roundtree, Terrence Robinson and Darryl Stonum. Stonum is a true WR and will play on the outside, the rest are slots. Shaw and Robinson could line up in the backfield at times as well. With the exception of Roundtree, this is an exceptionally fast group. Team speed will definitely get a boost of athleticism. Great fits in positions of need for new-UM.
TE, B: Kevin Koger and Brandon Moore are fine prospects. Will be interesting to see how they are utilized as both have plenty of athleticism.
OL, B: Dan O'neill, Elliot Mealer, Ricky Barnum, Kurt Wermers, and Rocko Khoury--a good solid group, but no definite OTs except for O'neill. Mealer could play RT, but have seen reviews that state his "road-grader" ability might be better served at OG. We shall see. Doubtful any are ready to contribute in '08.
DL, D+: Mike Martin will be a good NG, but no DEs in this class will hurt. UM probably needs 2+ DEs in '09 with at least one being a super.
LB, B+: JB Fitzgerald, Marcus Witherspoon, Taylor Hill, and Kenny Demens--lots of athleticism here and good prospects. Will inject more speed into UM defense. Maybe possible for Fitz to contribute this coming year.
DB, B+: Boubacar Cissoko, JT Floyd, and Brandon Smith--good gets, but UM probably needed another body here for depth. Good possibility for Cissoko and Smith to get PT in '08.

Overall: B

MICHAEL ROSENBERG: Wild new era at Michigan begins with huge hole at QB

This is now Rich Rodriguez's football program, in every way. I don't want to say the locks have been changed on Schembechler Hall, but ... well, yeah. The locks actually have been changed on Schembechler Hall.

I'm not kidding.

Michigan football will never be the same. That's not necessarily bad or good. It's just reality. Rodriguez is changing the culture of the program.
cont.

Lots of interesting stuff in this one, but my favorite:
Rodriguez could charm the skin off a snake, and he clearly can coach. But he rarely seems to think beyond the field, and it shows.

'09 stud dual-threat QB Russell Shephard is said by many to be a longhorn lean heading into february. However, in light of Russell's interest in RR, UM fans were hoping a verbal from fellow blue-chip Texas QB Garrett Gilbert would give them an edge. He says Texas deciding not to offer would dissuade him, but not competition. (Shephard thread)

He doesn't care. Why should he care? Mallett decided to leave the program, at which point he no longer cared. Follow up:

The problem is that Rodriguez didn?t just say that to Mallett, or to the media. He acted like the wronged party, and he made a Michigan freshman look bad in the process.
I do not understand the leap from "I tried three times and he does not want to be here, I wish him well" to "I am a wronged party! Mallett should look bad in your eyes!"

You know who else was about to run off Ryan Mallett? Saintly Lloyd Carr, who according to a source told him "I don't like anything about you" and then hurled transfer papers his way halfway through this season. Mallett almost transferred two seconds after he showed up on campus, then almost transferred the summer between his early enrollment and fall, and then actually did transfer as soon as Rodriguez was hired. There's a common thread here. It is not Rich Rodriguez.

UM '09 Recruiting needs (IMO)

Wheeeeew! Now that NLOID '08 is gone, what are UM's needs for '09? Here's my take:

1 QB--a super, no exceptions--if no super is available, then possibly 2 QBs will be taken.
1-2 RB
2-3 WR--at least one being a slot WR
1 TE
4-5 OL--at least three being true OTs, one being a super OT
3-4 DL--got W. Campbell (super)--need 2 DEs and one of them needs to be a super
2-3 LBs--at least one pour MLB
3-4 DBs--2 CBs, 2 S please

That's 17-23 right there.

Also, by super, I mean Top 100 kids that can realistically contribute as true FR.

The one thing that MgoBlog details that is incontrovertible is the tendency of PSU to try and hedge away a recruit, committed elsewhere or otherwise than PSU leaning, very late in the game. MGoBlog cites the examples of Morelli, Logan-El as late converts, and some like this year's Walker and Lewis who stood firm despite the late push.

Other examples of this behavior include last year's GoDaddy push for Hazelton (PSU and USC in opposite corners), Vidal signed with 'SC after a long soap opera tussle, Williams was a late switch to the Lions when he signed.

Where I question the MGoBlog article is in the "Some gentlemen" slant. It implies that RR was a good and merely aggressive recruiter, while doing exactly what all the other coaches he damns did. Too much cake and eat it too there, and it undermines a fair point. Lastly, I think MGoBlog gives too much credit to Rodriguez for the haul - props on keeping all but Wilson of the headliners in tow - but that is different from getting the commitment in the first place. My point being that we will not know how good Rodriguez really is when recruiting against PSU/ND/Illinois/Ohio State (not to mention the California /Florida / ACC / Big 12 teams) until the next class develops.

The usual classy response by a Wolverine fan.

Brian at MGoBlog is proving to be equally execrable to the usual UM drool producers one finds loitering in the Big Toilet.

Rivals.com College Football - Wolverines may face reality check

Still Michigan

Many "experts" say Rich Rodriguez will win at Michigan only when he gets the players he wants. What many experts fail to realize is that Michigan has better talent now than what he had at West Virginia. Do you feel Michigan will be ranked in the preseason top 25 next year. If not, will the Wolverines finish in the top 25 and continue the longest streak of bowl games and winning seasons?

Rodriguez wishes he could have taken quarterback Pat White and tailback Noel Devine with him to Ann Arbor, but maybe your appraisal is correct and he has more talent at Michigan than at West Virginia.
