Composite by-quarter scoring so far:

YSU....0....3....3....0

OSU....0....3...10....7
AKR....2*...0....0....0

OSU....0....3...14...16
WASH...0....7....0....7

OSU...28...17...13....0
NW.....0....0....7*...0

OSU...14....9....3....7
MINN...0....7....0....0

OSU...14....3....3....3
PUR....0....0....0....7

OSU....7...28...10....3
KSU....0....0....0....3

OSU...70...77...56...50 = 253 (36.1)
OPP....2...17...10...17 =..46 ( 6.6)

* non-offensive score

Take away the safety and kickoff TD, and the defense has given up 37 points (4 TDs, 3 FGs) in 7 games, or 5.3 ppg.

Also, outscoring our opposition 147-19 in the first half is pretty mind-boggling...

Lastly, the defense not surrendering a single fucking point in the first quarter all year is even more mind-boggling...

Excellent point about the first quarter what I found is also mind-boggling: the third quarter points scored and given up. I've always felt like if you come out the second half and make a statement it says alot about your team.

Take out that KO return to open the half by NW and our D has allowed but a single field goal in the third quarter. I think :osu:scoring D is really where it's at, give up some yards but get TO's, sacks and force em to punt. I love it!! :oh:

There have been years past where the Buckeyes "gave up yards" but were hard to score against... the old "bend-but-don't-break" defense.

It might seem that way this year to OSU fans, since we've been so spoiled by the dominance of this defense.

But when you lead the nation in Total Defense as well as Scoring Defense, it is doubtful that your opponents find you remotely pliable.

This is not "bend-but-don't-break". This is "shut-up-and-give-me-your-lunch-money".:io:

Good point. It's always great to smack the opposing offense from the start of each half. In the opening quarter of each half, the defense has yet to surrender a TD, and has allowed but 3 points...the other 34 points the defense has surrendered have been scored during the second half of each half, and 21 of those points only came within the last minute or so of the half.

Phenomenal...

yes, then we have the whole "bowl game collapse" persona that hangs over Carr's head. Its still possible to beat Michigan and make a bowl game you know

My point is that I would rather play in the title game every year and risk losing than to play in a different bowl game and win.

Oh...and I don't care about any kind of "persona". We'll leave that to the people that scan articles over the internet that "bash" the buckeyes looking for various ways to play the disrespect card.

A stark change from some past defenses (05?), which seemed to often surrender points on their first drive... then adjust and begin to impose their will.

That 3rd quarter field goal was given up against the Penguins. A fumble on our 27 yard line set them up nicely. They gained 3 yards in 3 plays and kicked the field goal.

But for a safety, a KO return and a fumble, this defense has shut out 7 straight opponents in the opening stanza of each half.

This just in.... They're pretty good.

The Buckeye Defense have allowed opponents into the Red Zone only 9 times this year. They have prevented touchdowns on 6 of those occasions.

If you were to handicap the Ohio State Defense by retroactively awarding our opponents touchdowns for crossing the Ohio State 20 yard line (entering the Red Zone); and even if you allowed them to keep the field goals they subsequently scored...

THEN OHIO STATE WOULD STILL LEAD THE BIG TEN IN SCORING DEFENSE. (by 1 point)

...and they'd still be undefeated.

I'd like to see Beanie, Mo and Brandon control the clock and run all over the spartan d this week. Our O-line being physical and opening holes for our stable of backs to keep our defense well rested and their running game off the field.:osu:

And while they are on the field bitch slap the hell out of em all the way back to east lansing:oh:

Don't get me wrong I like the big plays our offense makes in the passing game but it'd go along way to keep msu from getting any rhythm.

35-0 in the first half is still acceptable then we can really turn the dogs loose!:banger:

Just past the midseason, the tOSU defense is holding opponents to 26 points under their offensive scoring average (excluding the game played against tOSU)... not bad. The offensive rankings of the teams we're playing this year are suffering because the defense is holding them so far below their average, so it's not a completely fair guage of the offesive teams we've been playing based in their national ranking for scoring offensive found here.

Sonofa! Well, then he can check my work

Edit: I just looked back at DBB's DSD posts - didn't see that the first time through, I'll leave my post up because it chops up the data in a different way - no harm in too much information.

I think he calls it Differential Scoring (guess I should go back and check). His does for both offense and defense...good stuff. Although yours looks to add the specifics of each game...DBB's is more composited (if that's a word).

Very nice. I loved the Purdue game. Only true Buckeye fans appreciated how badly we kicked the crap out of them because the score wasn't ugly enough for the rest of the world. But that was definately a good old fashion bullying.

I have finally updated the Differential Analysis spreadsheet for this week.

As you might expect, Ohio State is now number one in the country in several categories.

While the NCAA simply adds up numbers, I have eliminated all games against non FBS competition, including all games involving Reclassifying Provisional Western Kentucky. My rankings are therefore slightly different than what the NCAA posts, but I believe them to be more useful.

Ohio State's Rankings:
Scoring Defense (SD):____1
Differential SD:_________1
Total Defense (TD):______2
Differential TD:_________1
Rushing Defense (RD):____1
Differential RD:_________1
Passing Defense (PD):___12
Differential PD:_________6
In the above, Differential refers to the proportion of their usual yards (and points) that opponents get when they play you. For example, OSU's Differential Scoring Defense (DSD) is 0.235; so OSU's opponents get, on average, 0.235 times as many points as they get against anyone else they play. The number two team in DSD is LSU, who allow their opponents 0.323 times as many points as they average against anyone else. The 2006 Buckeyes had a DSD of 0.510.

For these purposes, opponents games against you are factored out of their average when doing the comparison. This method requires a great deal more calculation, but offers more valid results (and the spreadsheet is the one doing all the calculating, so it doesn't take any more time).

Without stepping on DBB's toes too much, in 2006 the Buckeyes held opponents to 13 points under their offensive scoring average. If you look at only the first 11 games that average was -17.5 points. If tOSU had held Florida and scUM to their scoring average (0 point differential), the season average would have been just under 15 points less per game.

Amazing that the last two games gave 4.5 points back to each team...

Still, 26 points less per game is awesome... Give me your lunch money!!!
