Texas is missing Vince Young-type leadership

Wearing a black "No. 10" Texas jersey, Vince Young received a loud ovation from the crowd at Royal-Memorial Stadium as he jogged on to the field for the coin toss prior to last Saturday's Kansas State-Texas game. Their appreciation for the 2005 Heisman runner-up likely grew that much stronger once the game kicked off.

In falling 41-21 to the unheralded Wildcats -- the worst home loss in 10 years under head coach Mack Brown -- the Longhorns seemed to send a message to their beloved ex-quarterback: We miss you, Vince. No, really. Here -- see for yourself.

Texas wideout Sweed needs season-ending wrist surgery

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Texas senior wide receiver Limas Sweed, whose 20 career touchdown catches rank No. 2 in school history, will have wrist surgery that will end his season, the team announced late Monday.

Sweed will have surgery to repair ligament damage, trainer Kenny Boyd said. He first injured the wrist in the preseason but came back to play in the No. 22 Longhorns' first six games. He had just two catches in a 28-21 loss to Oklahoma and was taken out late in the game.

While I'm sure that Mack is a nice guy, I have never really been that sold on his ability to coach. He somewhat built up the UNC football team before leaving, and then he just rode that horse named Vince. Outside of the VY years, Mack is a coach that just couldn't win the big game (IMO). I guess that's what they'll have to look forward to till 2016.

Is Texas able to redshirt Sweed, or do they even care? Sucks for their offense, they haven't looked too sharp this year.

No redshirt is possible, he's played half the season. I don't think he'd be interested, anyway, he's going to get drafted in the spring.

Sweed's injury really sucks. It's been a rough 5 months. UT is very deep at receiver, but he was by far the most talented. The loss to Lewis hurts as well- he's been very solid at DE.

While I'm sure that Mack is a nice guy, I have never really been that sold on his ability to coach.

The conclusion that I've reached is he is extremely hesitant to make changes, whether it's with personnel, assistant coaches, or philosphy/scheme. In that respect, I think he might be the most conservative coach in the country. It's hard to fault him for that given his track record, but it's frustrating to watch.

Every time the team is struggling or up against the wall after consecutive bad performances, he does make necessary changes. I think the UT staff does their best job coaching in these situations. That goes for Greg Davis does too. I just wish it happened more often, which I think is why he has the reputation of not being a great coach in the technical sense.

Even though they lost to OU, that was by far the most prepared and motivated I've seen this year. The gameplan was solid on both sides of the ball and put them in a position to succeed, but the execution wasn't there (see: undisciplined secondary, Jamaal Charles' turnovers).

But the truth is this Texas team just isn't that good this year. The OU game was a pretty good indication of how good UT is this year: 7 points worse than the best team in the conference. I can live with that.

There's just enough veteran talent to hide just how young this team is. There's that old saying of "we don't rebuild, we reload." To some extent, Texas is rebuilding this year, thanks in large part to absolutely tiny 2004 and 2005 recruiting classes. With that said, the KSU loss is inexcusable, and only serves to confirm many people's beliefs that Mack Brown and Greg Davis can't coach.

I have a lot of respect for the Texas program but you just can't dismiss the fact Mack B's only championship came the same year he had VY at the peak of his CFB career. Nothing before(or next to nothing) and nothing since(although to be fair its only been 2 years).

Just to reiterate, without VY, Texas goes back to losing to OU on a regular basis. Good enough talent to regularly go 10-2 most years.

It might seem that way after last saturday, but the last two years (including last year's VY-less 28-10 UT victory) Texas has come out extremely motivated against OU. The Bob Stoops mind fuck of Mack Brown is no more, and hasn't existed since 2003. I see a lot of close games and a 50-50 split in the series over the next decade if these two coaches stay at their respective schools.

The biggest problems I see right now are a lack of motivation and youth. The former certainly is Brown's fault.

But yeah, I'd say a 10-2 regular season is a pretty accurate over/under for UT most years.

When coaches have shortcommings such as Mack and say Zook as gameday coaches but can recruit like hell. Why wouldn't they defer or hire someone with those traits as strong points.

To me it sounds like an easy fix but I just don't know.

Is the profession just that egotistical?

I have to say I was pretty impressed with how Texas played, considering I figured they would get blown off the field. Mack Brown isn't at all afraid of Stoops or OU, and it's made this rivalry something worth watching.

The real problem i see with Texas is that Colt McCoy really isn't that great of a QB, and on top of that he's really fragile.

I don't see either coach leaving anytime soon, both Brown and Stoops have NC's under their belt and in most schools that will get you some time. Losing Vince Young a year early set Texas back a bit but that can all be fixed with recruiting.

Texas reserve RB Cobb out for season with knee injury

AUSTIN (AP) -- Texas freshman fullback Antwan Cobb will have season-ending surgery after spraining a ligament in his left knee in last week's win over Iowa State. Cobb has played in all seven games for the No. 19 Longhorns (5-2), mostly on special teams. He caught a touchdown pass in his only start, a 21-13 win over Arkansas State in the opener.

Texas' Brown wants more policing of fans' behavior

Violent fan behavior has Texas coach Mack Brown calling for stern measures at college football games. Brown told the Austin American-Statesman his players were pelted with bottles and other objects Saturday after defeating Oklahoma State 38-35 in Stillwater, Okla.

"It was the only time I can remember when we couldn't stand with our team and sing The Eyes of Texas without telling our players to put their helmets back on," Brown said.
