Take off the scarlet colored glasses for a minute.

They've got a point. We haven't beaten anyone. We have looked very impressive against horrible football teams. Our best opponent is NW for pete's sake. Until we beat someone, us being #1 will drive the country up a wall. The good news is, that if we take care of business we'll be right where we want to be. That's all we can ask for at this point in the season.

i respectfully disagree.

we have beat everyone. everyone that has lined up on the other side of the field the past seven Saturday's, has walked away with a loss. OSU has done (thus far) what has been asked of them, they have beaten the teams that they have played.

Still not sold on South Florida. The national trend has been for these "contender" teams to lose again to the team they lost to last year - familiarity. The Bulls have yet to play Rutgers, Cincinnati and Lousiville... the conference teams they lost to last year. This year they play @Rutgers and @Louisville and Cincinnati is tough anywhere. USF beat West Virginia last year... at West Viriginia but lost four other games with basically the same team.

I hope the media bashing continues. It only serves to reinforce the "us against the world" bunker mentality that Tressel has instilled. They don't put disclaimers on crystal footballs anyway.

The more the media bashes the better I like our chances. I keep hoping for a Trev Alberts sound byte.

I'm with you Cicero--I just hope they keep talkin'. I love to follow the sports-media maggots, though--always good for a laugh, especially when they have egg on their faces. :tongue2:

actually, we've beaten everyone we've played... something that cannot be said about the ten or eleven teams that were ranked ahead of us to start the year. you say we haven't beaten any one. i say we haven't LOST to anyone. will that continue? tune in at 3:30 on Saturday to find out.

LSU fans are outraged we're #1! But, then I noticed that we had a common opponent with Kentucky.....Kent State!
Seems the team that just beat LSU, beat Kent earlier in the year 58-20!
We just beat Kent 48-3! Hmmm?
Seems like we're every bit as good as Kentucky! Probably better! :tongue2:
Which, arguably, is equal to LSU!

Buckeyes on No. 1: 'It's how we finish'

Ohio State remains focused despite where they are in midseason rankings.

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman plans to watch South Florida play at Rutgers tonight on ESPN, but not because he wants to size up a potential future opponent.
Although the No. 1 Buckeyes would face the second-ranked Bulls for the national title if the season ended today, Boeckman will be tuning in for entertainment, not information.

I hadn't seen these AP poll voting guidelines before. Does anybody have access to a full description of them?

si.com._mandel

But I checked my AP voting guidelines, and they specifically tell you to, "base your vote on performance, not reputation or speculation." LSU's performance against Kentucky was, in a word, subpar, not to mention keeping the same team No. 1 even after a loss would be setting a dangerous precedent.

Those same guidelines, however, also tell voters they shouldn't "hesitate to make significant changes in your ballot from week to week."

Hmmmmmm....then how does the AP have a pre-season poll?

Exactly what performance is being used by the voters?

None (unless you cout the previous season and blind guesses as fair game) - the system is more like this:

Now just imagine the dartboard has a bunch of team names on it...

Wouldn't it be great if half-a-dozen writers sent in blank ballots with the explanation, "I cannot fill out a preseason ballot in keeping with the admonishment to not base it on speculation".

Not that it would ever happen...

The only reason that the AP poll maintains any relevance is because sportswriters like Mandel keep writing about it, and older fans who remember when it meant something haven't gotten with the new program. The old BP poll has as much significance really, and I put more stock in CFN's rankings because they at least watch the games. Either way, it's all just chatter. Anything that isn't in the BCS math just does not matter.

What amazes me is how little you hear about Harris. It's 1/3rd of the BCS formula, and it's practically forgotten in most polling conversations.

Edit: Could someone who still cares about the AP poll explain to me why it's even worth a conversation?

It's useful for historical comparisons. For example, tOSU has been voted #1 89 times, second to ND and Oklahoma, both with 95.

And when something like TSUN dropping out of the poll after being #5, the AP poll is the one used to see how many times something like that has happened before.
