2007 Heisman Trophy Discussion

Reading the update of that page this week could be interesting. cbs.sportsline.heisman

Tim Tebow, it turns out, is not Superman; Colt Brennan threw 5 INTs against Idaho; Sam Bradford finally played like a Freshman, throwing 2 INTs that let Colorado back in it, and the people over at WeAreSC went doom-and-gloom over Booty's sub-USC-excellence outing.

It was a good week to be Andre Woodson or Mike Hart.

I think tsun has a couple more L's in their future so it would be a major stretch for Hart to win it.

Woodson's test comes the next two weeks at South Carolina in a Thursday night game and vs LSU at home. He does some damage in those two and he can grab the lead imo.

Bumping the thread for this thought.

During the W. Va. / USF game (or if you prefer from an 'Eer perspective, SFU) they played that wonderful 4 Heisman candidate commercial that the Big East ponied up big bucks to make.

What a waste of money! It featured Slaton, White, Brohm and Rice.

Even before the Friday game Brohm's candidacy for the Heisman had fallen into the crapper. By the time the witching hour came and went that of Slaton and White was seriously devalued, along with the 'Eers season prospects. Then came Saturday, and the last of the Big Easy's pretenders to the Heisman also saw his team take it on the chin as Rutgers fell foul to their aversion at being ranked in the top 10.

So, 4 Big Easy candidates are effectively off the table.

Who is left that is a real contender at this point? Are there new entrants previously not identified by our diligent sports writers in the media that are worthy of consideration?

Andre Woodson of Kentucky had his non-interception streak stop after 325 passes (a new record), but he can hang his hat on that all year.

Matt Ryan has led BC to a 5-0 start, but he's rated 50th in passing efficiency, and Anthony Morelli is 49th.

Chase Daniel is a dual-threat QB for undefeated Missouri, who is 23rd in passing efficiency.

Both Colts had a bad weekend. 4 picks in a 41-21 loss to K-State for McCoy, and 5 picks for Brennan against Idaho.

For sheer passing numbers, Texas Tech's Graham Harrell has 24 TDs and only 2 picks with his 2301 passing yards and #7 efficiency rating.

Sam Bradford had an ineffective day in Oklahoma's loss, and although he still is tops in efficiency, he won't be taken very seriously now.

Mike Teel of Rutgers is the #2 rated passer in efficiency, but Rutgers' loss to Maryland really hurts both Teel and Ray Rice.

Dennis Dixon threw 2 late picks in a loss against Cal to hurt his case.

Curtis Painter would throw his hat in the ring if he can lead Purdue past tOSU this Saturday. He struggled in second half agasint ND, but his team is still undefeated.

Booty at USC only has 875 passing yards, and is 41st in effiiciency.

Among QB's right now, I'd go with Woodson, Tebow, Dixon, Harrell, Ryan, and Daniel.

For running backs, many have McFadden at the top. I have a tough time putting him at number 1 when he gets 6.3 yards per carry, and Felix Jones is averaging 10.4 on the same team!

Mike Hart has shown toughness and leadership with 7 TDs, and is second in rushing yards, but he's gotten about 3.5 yards/carry in the last two games, and is at 4.8 for the season. P.J. Hill (4th in rushing yards) is also at 4.8 ypc, and has 9 TDs.

Jonathan Stewart of Oregon is 6th in total rushing yards, and is getting 7.3 ypc with 5 TDs.

Justin Forsett of Cal is 8th in yards, and has a 5.4 average with 9 TDs.

Slaton has 9 TDs and a 6.7 average, but his 2 fumbles were costly against USF, and Noel Devine is averaging 10.8 per carry in the same offense.

But for RBs, McFadden, Hart, Hill, Forsett and Stewart are in the mix.

For WR's, Michael Crabtree of Texas Tech has 920 yards and 14 TDs, but had a ball bounce off his shoulder in the last minute which could have won the Okie State game.

Brian Robiskie has 530 yards, 6 TDs, and a healthy 21.2 average. He's not a serious candidate at this point, but those significant numbers (if they continue) could get him some attention if tOSU moves up even higher.

DeSean Jackson of Cal gets mentioned, but he only has 311 receiving yards; and the 2 TDs he caught Saturday were his first TD catches of the year. He did have a great highlight on a punt return TD earlier in the year.

Percy Harvin gets some mention; he has 455 yards receiving for 3 TDs, and 174 rushing yards with 1 TD; but Tebow is the star on that team.

For other positions, LSU's best player is probably DT Glenn Dorsey. He'll get some attention if none of the offensive players breaks out.

For my top-10 (as of today, not a prediction), I'll go with:

Woodson
Tebow
McFadden
Hart
Dorsey
Dixon
Harrell
Ryan
Hill
Daniel

Still on the radar:
Stewart
Forsett
Painter
Harvin

Not getting serious consideration from me at this point:
Steve Slaton, Ray Rice, Pat White, Brian Brohm, J.D. Booty, Sam Bradford, Colt Brennan, Colt McCoy, Mike Teel

As the receiver that caught the game winners versus both PSU and Michigan last year, Robo already has a Heisman in my book ... well, part of Troy's, anyway ... :)

I can't believe that Booty is not getting any respect. I think Woodson has been the best so far. We'll see what he is really made of when he faces the meat of the SEC starting this week with S. Carolina and then on to LSU and FL. I still think Beanie and even Robo has time to make their cases as well to at least be in the discussions.

In that case, Colt Brennan should have won the Heisman last year.

Your case that they lost is a pathetic argument. Half of the guys on the list above have lost a game or more.

Is it only limited to players on undefeated teams?

To be fair, one INT went in and out of a WR's hands (pass was dead on target) right to a defender, and another bounced way up off a helmet to a defender. Still, he was off in his accuracy, and I even told my local neighbors that he can kiss the Heisman good-bye with that performance...
