2006 Pre-Season TOP 10??

Notre Dame and Chokelaohoma at 6-1 are a joke.

Who would really take those.

Notre Dame was exposed by a good team in us and they didnt have an impressive win all season, unless you want to count scUM but they own them every year.

As for Chokelahoma, Bomar sucks, and they have a great rb that can't stay healthy. I believe they lose a lot of their D-line too, not for sure.

Not saying they won't have a good season, but to have them as top team to win a NC is a little out there IMO.

O and by the way why isnt WVU 1/99 I thought they were the number one team. I bet Pat Forde has already put his money on WVU at 15-1. Probably put a mortgage on his house.

This should be the new way the pollsters do rankings. Ask themselves if they believe in their ranking enough to actually put money on them, b/c you know damn well Forde wouldnt put money on WVU to win it all.

People seem to forget they beat scUM when they didn't know what the hell they were doing. We played them when they were on a 6-game win streak including a win over Penn St.

I know its espn, and i should expect this but wow

8. Michigan Wolverines
Why: If Mike Hart stays healthy and Chad Henne continues to progress, the Wolverines will still score a lot of points. And the defense will have a lot of experience at linebacker and in the secondary.

Why not: When was the last time this program lived up to expectations?

11. Texas Longhorns
Why: The monkey is off their back and lies dead at the Longhorns' feet. They know how to win championships -- and they have a deep cast of skill-position talent to work with, even if the quarterback has changed.

Why not: That's not just any change at quarterback. Vince Young was the heart, soul and singular talent on that Texas title team. There have been no bigger shoes to fill in college football in many years.

1. West Virginia Mountaineers
Why: One of the surprise teams of 2005 should be better in '06. Quarterback Pat White and running back Steve Slaton were amazingly productive as freshmen, and they have plenty of other offensive weapons to rely on.

Why not: The secondary must be rebuilt, and we all remember how the Mountaineers underachieved in 2004 with top 10 expectations.

ok my comments:

Mich - how they can be a top ten team is beyond me

texas - how they aren't in the top ten is beyond me

WV - i get that they impressed people and have a weak schedual but how they can be number 1 is beyond me.....they are in the Big F'in East for cryin out loud

West Virginia has a great shot at getting to the national championship game, no question; they return almost everyone from a very successful team last year and their schedule is C-A-K-E. I'd give them better odds than any team in the country, in fact, at finishing the regular season undefeated.

Of course, I also don't think they'll be the best team in the country next year. I'd rank tOSU, Notre Dame, LSU and most likely Oklahoma, USC and FLorida ahead of them. But this brings up an interesting question: how do you determine rankings? It seems like ESPN based their #1 on who had the best team with the most favorable schedule, not who is purely the best team. That's not how I (or most on this site, I would think) go about ranking teams. Still, it's smart in a way, because I don't see WV losing to anyone on their schedule next year, so their chances for ending up in the top 2 are very good.

i can see that...however seems to me that more than one person thought the same thing about louisville last year, the same louisville team that returns plenty of players and plays in the same confrence as WV.....i just have a hard time believing that they don't drop at least one...still the WV ranking is hardly my largest beef with this list

This is really tough to say, but I think Michigan is UNDERrated.

You have a starting QB and RB both with two years starting experience (when is the last time OSU had that going for them?). Stud receivers. Eight players back on D. Jake Long. And they do recruit talent.

Granted, Carr knows how to waste talent, but Michigan fans are entitled to high expectations with this team.

What hurts them is their schedule. At ND, PSU and OSU is a killer. The game in South Bend could have huge NC implications.

I think TSUN will beat Notre Dame. Carr will be living for this game, believing it to be perhaps even as important as Ohio State. If he loses to them again, the hatchets will be out big time, and he knows it.

I'd put Michigan at #12-16, but no higher. Henne had a good freshman year b/c he threw jump balls to Edwards. You can blame injuries for the 05 season. Therefore, I'm not sure anyone can determine how Chad will perform.

Michigan fans aren't nearly as high on Henne as they were. Manningham is good, but Breaston follows the recent Michigan mold, tons of potential but very streaky. They have other excellent HS talent at WR, but we'll see how elite they are at the college level. They are not that high on their OL talent. And they are fed up with the bigger is better S&C program by Hermann (who even if replaced, will still have a lingering effect of the lack of speed on the 06 team).

I do not expect Michigan to be in the NC hunt. ND may lose to PSU as well, which I hope they do (we can handle PSU this season, we can't touch ND if they beat UM/PSU).
