FIESTA BOWL AUDIBLE

By Kyle Nagel
Dayton Daily News
Issue: OSU football '06.
<!--endtext-->

<!-- inset --> <!--begintext--> In the spirit of a completed season, and considering that I was blown away by how well Ohio State played in its 34-20 Fiesta Bowl victory against Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, I thought I would fast-forward to predict the Top 5 things we'll be saying about the OSU football team during the 2006 season:
• 5. Anthony Gonzalez has become one of the best big-play receivers in OSU history. Late in the fourth quarter on Monday, Gonzalez caught a 15-yard pass on 3rd-and-11 from a scrambling Troy Smith. It was reminiscent of Gonzalez' jumping, bending catch against Michigan that set up the winning OSU touchdown.
• 4. Two OSU running backs rush for 600 yards. The quick, darting Antonio Pittman again passes 1,000 yards, and 6-foot-1, 225-pound bruising freshman Chris Wells opens his OSU career with more than 600 yards.
• 3. Ted Ginn Jr. totals 15 TDs — 10 receiving, three rushing and two on punt returns. But, wanting to do more, Ginn declares he will return for his senior season to join new starting QB Todd Boeckman.
• 2. Troy Smith finishes second in the Heisman voting. Unfortunately, Notre Dame's Brady Quinn was just a little bit better and won by the third-smallest margin in Heisman voting history.
• 1. Auburn wins the national championship in a 34-28 victory against Ohio State. Smith finishes his OSU career with 280 passing yards but is stopped on a scramble at the 3-yard line as time expires.

My Top 5 things we will be saying about the team next year:
5. Troy Smith will enter the season as the most hyped Heisman candidate in college football, but Ted Ginn Jr. will win it. His dazzling speed and moves overshadow the MVP season Smith has, such as Reggie Bush did to Leinart. Buckeye fans will mark Smith down as the greatest QB in Ohio State history.
4. Chris Wells plays extremely well and gains 500 yards, but most of those are in late quarter blowouts, as Antonio Pittman becomes a household name across the nation, running for 1,500 yards.
3. The young Ohio State defense starts out slow, giving up 21 ppg in non-conference play, which hardly matters when you are scoring 38ppg. But during Big 10 play they gel together to lead the conference in points allowed and total yards. The biggest difference from 2005's defense, they help give Ohio State a +12 turnover margin on the season.
2. Troy Smith saves his best game of his career for the Big 10 finale, as he rushes for 106 yards and passes for 313 with 4 total TDs as the Buckeyes roll Michigan 41-13 in Columbus. Smith's 419 yards total the most ever by an Ohio State Buckeye. Troy Smith's 1142 total career yards against Michigan becomes the most over by an Ohio State player.
1. Ohio State enters the Fiesta Bowl as the only undefeated team in the country. The BCS gets a lot of controversy as Florida, Oklahoma, and Miami all finish with 1 loss. Florida ends up getting the #2 spot in the closest BCS standings finish in it's short history. Ohio State goes behind 3-0 early in the 1st quarter, and never lets Florida see the redzone again, winning 27-3. Smith only passes for 155 yards, but Antonio Pittman gains 200 yards on the ground for the first time in his career, as Ohio State runs all over the Gators to win the National Championship.

That was fun :)

as a youngster, there is no way to bet against these odds, right? Placing choklahoma and ND at 6-1 is laughable.

the oklahoma odds should be high, just not 6-1. They are returning the best running back in the nation and almost everyone on a defense that improved all year long. Bomar was highly recruited and has a year under his belt. They also beat a 1 loss Oregon team in their bowl game. It is not hard to understand why they would get at least some pub......until you notice that they will have to rebuild their entire Oline...Again...this is the second year in a row that they have a new oline. I could easily see an early loss to oregon followed by an amazing season.

as for ND...Who the hell did they actually beat last year? anyone...anyone?

Notre Dame and Chokelaohoma at 6-1 are a joke.

Who would really take those.

Notre Dame was exposed by a good team in us and they didnt have an impressive win all season, unless you want to count scUM but they own them every year.

As for Chokelahoma, Bomar sucks, and they have a great rb that can't stay healthy. I believe they lose a lot of their D-line too, not for sure.

Not saying they won't have a good season, but to have them as top team to win a NC is a little out there IMO.

O and by the way why isnt WVU 1/99 I thought they were the number one team. I bet Pat Forde has already put his money on WVU at 15-1. Probably put a mortgage on his house.

This should be the new way the pollsters do rankings. Ask themselves if they believe in their ranking enough to actually put money on them, b/c you know damn well Forde wouldnt put money on WVU to win it all.
