2006 Heisman Discussion (merged all)

Quarterbacks abound as Heisman hopefuls

Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith passes against Northern Illinois' defense during the Buckeyes game Sept. 2. Smith moved above Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn as a Heisman Trophy front-runner.

1. Troy Smith, QB, Ohio State - Up

After completing 17 of 26 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns against Texas, Smith has jumped above Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn in the Heisman race. While Quinn fared well against Penn State, Smith's ability to dominate one of the best defenses in the country, regardless of the loss of Tarell Brown, has pushed him to the front of the pack. Many critics have favored Quinn even before the start of the season, but Smith proved on Saturday how deserving he really is.

2. Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame - Up

In Week 2, Quinn and company returned to form with a 41-17 victory over No. 19 Penn State. Quinn, who was 12 of 16 passing for 150 yards and one touchdown in the second quarter alone, finished the game with 287 passing yards and three touchdowns. Despite his performance, Smith gets the nod this week for stepping into a tough environment and beating a better defense while Quinn roughed up on a weak secondary and overrated Nittany Lions squad.

3. Chris Leak, QB, Florida - Up

Leak proved in Saturday's game against Central Florida that he is ready for this weekend's Southeastern conference match up against No. 11 Tennessee. Leak threw for a career-high 352 yards and four touchdowns proving to the country that he is adapting well to Urban Meyer's offensive scheme in his second year under Meyer. Leak is finally showcasing the talent that earned him the starting job four years ago.

4. Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma - Even

The No. 15 Sooners won their second game of the season in an ugly fashion, but Adrian Peterson still looked as smooth as ever. Peterson paced the Sooners past the Huskies, rushing for 165 yards and two touchdowns in his team's 37-20 win over Washington. Peterson, who is likely headed to the NFL after this season, is the main reason why the Sooners are still ranked in the top 20. Without him, Oklahoma could be sitting with an 0-2 record heading into this weekend's game against No. 18 Oregon.

5. Steven Slaton, RB, W. Virginia - Even

Slaton racked 105 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries - in the first quarter in West Virginia's 52-3 win over Eastern Washington on Saturday. Slaton then called it a day , allowing other younger running backs to get reps against the Division I-AA team. The Mountaineers have the easiest road to the national championship than the other teams in the Top 10, but that doesn't hurt Slaton's chance of claiming the Heisman Trophy this season. Remember Alex Smith? His Utah team didn't play anyone either and he was still invited to the 2004 Heisman Trophy ceremony.

On the bubble: Ohio State wide receiver/kick returner Ted Ginn Jr. and LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

From Mel Kiper Jr's Week 2 Personnel Points:

Ohio State's brilliant senior QB Troy Smith is currently No.1 on my Heisman Trophy list for a reason. Not only was he spectacular against Texas, but dating back to late last year, Smith has been the Buckeyes star against top level opposition. Against Michigan and Notre Dame over the final two games of last season as well as Texas on Saturday, Smith has completed over 69-percent of his passes, with five touchdowns compared to zero interceptions. He's a lot more comfortable in the pocket, going through his progressions and consistently making good, sound decisions.

A big plus for Smith has been the fact that junior WR Ted Ginn, Jr. is red hot early on in the season. He can take a five-yard reception and turn it into a 65-yarder. Thus far in 2006, he's hauled in nine receptions, averaging a whopping 24.4 yards a catch with three touchdowns.

James Laurinaitis, Ohio State's sophomore LB, came through with a spectacular effort in the Buckeyes impressive victory Saturday night on the road at Texas. The 6-2-1/2, 233-pounder was around the action a great deal, coming up big at just the right time. He caused the fumble when Texas was ready to score at the two-yard line, preventing the Longhorns from getting on the board first. He also had a key interception in the second half that led to a field goal. Already he's drawing comparisons to former Buckeye star and Dallas Cowboys first round draft choice Bobby Carpenter.

Found this by way of Heisman Pundit:

With a cool and efficient performance in Saturday night's 24-7 win at then-second-ranked Texas, Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith has built his lead in this week's Scripps Howard News Service Heisman Trophy poll.

Smith's two touchdown passes not only boosted No. 1 Ohio State but also gave him eight of 10 first-place votes. Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn, the preseason favorite, got the other two votes and is in second place with Oklahoma RB Adrian Peterson third.

Compiled by The Rocky Mountain News in Denver, the Scripps Heisman poll is the longest-running weekly Heisman Trophy poll in the country, in its 20th year. The final poll taken in December correctly has predicted the Heisman winner 16 of the previous 19 seasons. There are 10 voters, two from each of five regions of the nation, who vote for five players each week. The tabulations are made on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis, with five points for a first-place vote, four points for second, etc. First-place votes are in parentheses.

This week's poll with stats from last weekend:

Name, Position, School, Statistics, Points.

1. Troy Smith, QB, Ohio State, 17-of-26, 269 yards passing, 2 TD passes, 44 (8).

2. Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame, 25-of-36, 287 yards, 3 TD passes, 37 (2).

3. Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma, 32 carries, 165 yards rushing, 2 TDs, 25.

4. Steve Slaton, RB, West Virginia, 8 carries, 105 yards rushing, 2 TDs, 11.

5. (tie) Chris Leak, QB, Florida, 19-of-29, 352 yards passing, 4 TD passes, 7

5. Kenny Irons, RB, Auburn, 21 carries, 69 yards, 7.

Others receiving votes: Garrett Wolfe, RB, Northern Illinois, 6; Eric Ainge, QB, Tennessee, 5; Ted Ginn Jr., WR, Ohio State, 4; Brian Brohm, QB, Louisville, 3; Drew Weatherford, QB, Florida State, 1.

The voters: Kirk Bohls (Austin (Texas) American-Statesman); Scott Cain (Arkansas Democrat Gazette); Dennis Dodd (CBSSportsLine); Vahe Gregorian (St. Louis Post-Dispatch); Mike Griffith (Knoxville (Tenn.) News Sentinel); Randy Holtz (Rocky Mountain News); John Lindsay (Scripps Howard News Service); Michael Lewis (The Salt Lake Tribune); John Rohde (The Oklahoman); Michael Vega (The Boston Globe).

Take a look at the number of points that Troy got in that Scripps Howard poll posted by Dryden (44).

Do the math; you'll find that the two brilliant sports writers who voted Brady Quinn #1 gave Troy an average rank of 4. Everybody else voted Troy #1.

Hmmmmm...

ESPNU Daily: Top Heisman Candidates

Sorry if this has been mentioned.

ESPN has an ESPN Motion bit titled ?ESPNU Daily: Top Heisman Candidates? In this segment they have Troy Smith 3rd and Qinn #1 as of now. This is hard to fathom from my extremely biased view point, The stats do not support this. Smith beats Qinn in every category. What is behind this love affair with Qinn?

NAME CMP ATT YDS CMP% YDS/A TD INT SACKS RAT
5. Troy Smith, Ohio St 35 51 566 68.6 11.1 5 0 3 194.20
46. Brady Quinn, N Dame 48 74 533 64.9 7.2 3 0 5 138.75

Gee... I wonder. :roll2:

Troy will get his opportunity to shred that same inexperienced Penn State secondary in a couple of weeks.

Obviously, we're going to have to go for it on 4th and 2 a lot more often and play the starters into the 4th quarter of 40 point blowouts to pad Troy's stats if he's going to win the Heisman.

i think that we have the heisman winner up in columbus Quinn, and Peterson are good but I just think that smith is a better leader than quinn and peterson and he is definitly a better athlete all around than any other player in the country

espn makes it seem like quinn has already one this thing. past 2 weeks i have watch game day and all they talk about is ND and quinn. they probly on spent 5 mins talkin about smith and the bucks last week!

With all due respect, I watched alot more ESPN last week than I usually do because of the impending game with Texas. What I saw was OSU vs. Texas previews every 5 minutes analyzing every aspect of the game. I thought it was ultra-cool, but I remember thinking that 48 states were probably a little tired of it by the time Saturday rolled around.

I think Smith will ultimately be the best QB in college but if ND and tOSU go undefeated it will go to Quinn. If it was handed out after the bowl games it would go to Smith but since it doesn't it will go to Quinn. The media wants ND to "be back" so bad they will give it to Quinn even if he has lesser stats than Smith. As much as I hate scUM I hope they smack ND in the mouth Saturday. If ND loses to scUM they will probably lose to USC and nobody will give the Heisman to a QB with 2 losses.

I'm just not buying the, Brady will get it because the media loves ND argument. Pre-internet and 24 hour sports TV and radio, I might have bought it. Now it's completely the opposite. Every mistake that Brady makes, as the supposed front-runner, will be amplified. Too much attention can cause a team like Notre Dame to be unfairly judged as well. No other team goes in to Georgia Tech and leaves with a win and drops that much in the polls. Everytime Brady Quinn gets happy feet in a game, everytime he throws a bad ball, INT or not. Everytime he takes the slightest misstep it will be over analyzed, and he will lose votes because of it.
