2006 Heisman Discussion (merged all)

I'm just not buying the, Brady will get it because the media loves ND argument. Pre-internet and 24 hour sports TV and radio, I might have bought it. Now it's completely the opposite. Every mistake that Brady makes, as the supposed front-runner, will be amplified. Too much attention can cause a team like Notre Dame to be unfairly judged as well. No other team goes in to Georgia Tech and leaves with a win and drops that much in the polls. Everytime Brady Quinn gets happy feet in a game, everytime he throws a bad ball, INT or not. Everytime he takes the slightest misstep it will be over analyzed, and he will lose votes because of it.

I agree. Plus it's not a "media" award per se...There will be plenty of Heisman voters who dislike ND just as much as we do...

Quinn will put up much better stats yardagewise than TS. Wies is a dick who runs up the score. JT will run the clock out starting in the third quarter.

I would rather run the clock out and keep my guys healthy. I hate to wish harm on anyone but it would be somewhat thought provoking if Weis has a key injury to one of his guys late in the game when up by 20+ points.

Bobby Petrino left Brian Brohm in last weekends game against Temple (Temple!!!), while up 42-0. Beyond that, Louisville went for it on 4th-and-4 before the end of the first half, at a point when they were leading 35-0.

You'd think a team that just lost Michael Bush for the season -- and with Brohm coming off an ACL injury of his own -- wouldn't tempt the karma gods in such reckless fashion. I would never wish injury on a player, so here's hoping a sideline collision between a couple Canes and some Cards spills over and into Petrinos kneecaps. It couldn't happen to a better scumbag.

One potential negative for Troy is that many people believe that Qinn will be a higher NFL draft pick. Sometimes in a close race the potential to succeed at the next level plays into the voting. We will see how it plays out.

Not sure I agree. There were many people who questioned Reggie Bush's ability to produce at the next level. Jason White is another name that comes to mind. This isn't an award about who is going to be the best NFL player but rather who was the best college player.
Also, my take is that right now Troy has a few advantages over Quinn. First of all he has more signature wins (Michigan, Notre Dame, Texas). While two of those games were last year they also happened to be the final two games of the year and that stays in the voters' minds. Second, Troy won their head to head matchup quite handily. As long as Ohio State keeps winning the Heisman is Troy's to lose IMHO.

I think Troy Smith will be a better Pro than Quinn. Quinn isn't very mobile and if he is a high draft pick is going to go to a crap team. The difference between a good team and bad team in the NFL alot of times is the O-line. If you cant get away from the pressure your dead meat, ask David Carr or Alex Smith. Troy looks very comfortable in the pocket but is more than athletic enough to dodge the defense coming at him w/o having to scramble. Look at Big Ben for instance, not a huge threat to scramble but is athletic enough to keep the play alive. All that did for the steelers was win them a super bowl. Quinn got man-handled by the speed on the Buckeye defense last year and they wont be any slower in the NFL.

I am not to worried about Troy and the Heisman. ND is going to lose a game or 2, maybe even this weekend. With the stats Troy will end up with and if we go undefeated it will be a no-brainer.

From what I've seen of Quinn, especially in his younger years (with a terrible line) he's got pretty good mobility. Nothing like Troy obviously, but I wouldn't call him Drew Bledsoe either.

Ask Tim Couch.. idk if he'll be "better" 20 years from now when their careers are over, but i do think Troy has a big-time arm and has the right head on his shoulders to one day make a pro-bowl, the rate at which he is improving is unreal

Quinn's Heisman hopes are on life support in my opinion, Peterson had a huge day, but the loss really hurts him. Troy was solid and he has to be the favorite at this point.
Absolutely agree. The sad thing is if any other Heisman candidate QB on any other team had that kind of day, his candidacy would be flatlining as opposed to just on life support. We all know he's a couple of good games away from being revived.

I think Troy is the definite leader now. Here is the list of prime candidates from Espn and what I think of their chances:
lTroy Smith QBOhio StateSr.
Brady Quinn QBNotre DameSr.
Adrian Peterson RBOklahomaJr.
Steve Slaton RBWest VirginiaSo.
Ted Ginn Jr. WROhio StateJr.
Chris Leak QBFloridaSr.
Kenny Irons RBAuburnSr.
Garrett Wolfe RBNorthern IllinoisSr.
Brian Brohm QB louisville

Smith is now the leader
Quinn is now out of it
Peterson is out of it, had to go undefeated for him to win it Okla
Slater moves up and probably will go to NY with WVa's schedule
Ginn is still in it, will he go to NY? not without some return TD's is my thinking
leak is still in it. But i dont think he will get thru the season pure.
Irons is a good runner but wont beat out Peterson.
Wolfe is a hope for smaller colleges but thats all
brohm is hurt , out 6-8 weeks so he is out of it
It would be great to have another Buckeye winner :osu:

Peterson's not out of it. He got over 200 yards and his team got hosed by not getting a replay call on an onsides kick. Voters won't hold that loss against a running back.

He, along with Slaton and Leak, are the main contenders for Troy at this point.

Drew Stanton, Drew Tate, J.D. Booty, Dwayne Jarrett, and Michael Hart and all still have the opportunity to make a run for it.

Irons has had 2 games well under 100 yards, and he won't be able to run for major yards in the SEC to make up for that.

Anybody saying that Brady Quinn still has a chance should be slapped.

You are right about okla getting hosed. they even got the dreaded double hose job:biggrin:  . Both those calls, the on side kick and the tipped pass int. were bogus.

Peterson needs Troy and others to stumble badly and they have to go undefeated for him to have any chance at all. Peterson is okla's only offense. will they beat texas???
I agree about Slater and Leak with you. Stanton and Tate play on the wrong teams this year UNLESS Iowa runs the table. Booty is a freshman so he wont win it. Jarrett gets his passes from Booty so he wont win it.
I never even gave Hart a thought until now If Meechigan and Hart have a good year he could be in it.
If tOSU goes undefeated there goes Hart and Tate.
So I guess my top five now would be;
Smith
Peterson
Leak
Slater
Ginn
I wont say Quinn cuz I dont want to get slapped:biggrin:  :groove: :groove: :groove:
