2006 Breakout/Surprise Players

Offense - Kirk Barton: He may never get the recognition that he deserves, but I think he was the most underrated player on the line last year, and I really think his leaderships skills and his experience are going to make him the anchor of what looks to be a skilled offensive line. I honestly look for the WHOLE offensive line to have a breakout year. It's hard to pick a breakout player on a offense that has so much known talent already. We don't really need anybody to break out...just keep freakin doing what you've been doing!!! If this offense gets any better...then that's just scary! We didn't set offensive records against Notre Dame for no reason.

Defense - Marcus Freeman: He's a stud. He's really poised to break out and become on of the best LBs in the Big 10. By the end of the year, people are going to wonder how this guy didn't see the field sooner (oh yeah, because we had the best LBs in the country last year.)

Special Teams - Ryan Pretorious: What i've seen of this kid's leg is that it is something special. Tressel is high on him, and rightfully so. Its too bad his name doesn't have a UUUUUUU in it, cuz he's gonna have such a great season, that we're gonna wanna chant something!

GO BUCKS!!! BEAT MICHIGAN!!!

Chris Wells will split time with Pittman. He will be like body punches to the opposition's DBs. By the late third or Fourth quarter they will start to wear down opening up our offense.

John Kerr undersized but won D-1 player of the year as a senior in high school. Led Indiana in tackles despite not having a d-line to keep blockers off him.

Jamo on special teams

Offense: Rory Nicol. I really liked Frost late this season, but we'll use 2 TEs over the course of the year, and Nicol was really starting to come out before he was injured.

Defense: Vernon Gholston. We really need one of these young DEs to break out and pressure some QBs, and VG's been right on the cusp for awhile now.

I can't really add anything new to the special-teams discussion, but I just hope there's a clear-cut starter at PK and some incoming froshes (like Moeller) on coverage teams.

How on Earth is Ted Ginn a breakout player? Everybody knows who Ted Ginn is.

If every time you line up to field a punt or kick the play-by-play guy says, "They better not kick it to him," you have already broken out.

The only person who still doesn't know who Ted Ginn is is LLLLoyd Carr.

Offense - Albert Dukes. I'm assuming he wins the 3rd WR spot and if so he will play a lot. He was always open in the spring game and like someone else said looks like a Holmes clone when it comes to running routes. He just needs better concentration and the sky's the limit.

Defense - Marcus Freeman. An obvious choice, but I just see him dominating.

Special Teams - Kurt Coleman. I think he'll be a beast on kick coverage. It's possible he might get red-shirted, but I don't think so.

Not to nitpick, but Barton was recognized as one of the most valuable members of our O-Line last year (e.g., when he went down at PSU); therefore, I don't really see how he can be a breakout player next year.

I value your opinion. I still think he was underrated. I don't think he's going to be highly touted at the begining of the year by anybody outside Buckeye fans...but after the year, he will. That's a breakout season to me. And yes...to nitpick...cuz you did.

I'd have to agree with you. At best, he was the 4th-best known OL behind Mangold, Sims, and even his backup, Alex Boone.

Offense - Dukes. He will step into Gonzo's shoes from last year as the #3 and I dare you match him up with a Safety or LB

Defense - Andre Amos. I think he nails down the corner spot opposite Jenkins and becomes the man. He was openly praised during Fall camp but they had the luxury to redshirt him. He will be a good tall, strong CB.

Special Teams - Pretorious. With his age and history he will be a huge story for ABC everytime they come to campus this year.

:oh: :io:

my picks

Offense: Roy Hall. Big mean monster, either as a wideout or they slide him to TE. His hard work finally pays off.

Defense: off the wall, but I believe Sirjo Welch will prove to be the best tackler on D and they will find a way to keep him in the lineup.

ST: Pretorius

Go Bucks!
