Game Thread #2 tOSU at #3 Oregon, Sat. Oct. 12, 7:30 pm ET, NBC

Man, we had almost 500 yards of offense and we aren’t dynamic?
Not enough IMHO in the context of winning a NC.
I think some people are having unrealistic expectations.
I disagree considering the amount of coaching money we're spending.
We threw for more than 300 yards and rushed for more than 100.
Yep, true. But couldn't get it done when it counted this game.
Were we perfect?
What do you mean? In what ways are we not perfect? I've said my piece about this in some detail. Where's yours?
Absolutely not but are those stats that should have been good enough to win? Absolutely.
Obviously stats don't win games, right? So no, it wasn't good enough.

Something beyond that wins these games. I do expect the team to play better, do you, or is that good enough for you personally? How can they play better?

I guarantee it isn't good enough to the coaches and team. Although the stats were good (who cares) many were saying something seemed off with the offense, albeit there were some good plays.

Am just as disappointed in the loss as any in Buckeye Nation. Maybe a bit more, dunno. tOSU D got 'handled'. I get that the Ducks WRs were good, they showed that, and yes, Gabriel has a better arm than Will. Methinks there's more than a little dissention between Knowles and LJ on how the DL should be playing. Was dissapointed in the push, guess Oregon's OL was better than anticipated? Or was tOSU's DL just not as good? Maybe Day, along with Knowles and LJ should have the proverbial 'Come to Jesus' meeting. Still doesn't excuse the DBs. Last year #1, AND then add Downs? Come on. Simply hurts to have a team pick on the #1 DB. To me, it was simply a weird game. Cannot put my finger on it, but from the jump, something was 'off' for me. LBs a bright spot, handled the TE OK, not great, but acceptable. Worst part of the game is that Simmons looks like he's done for the year. Drop off from #1 to #2 LT is significant. Michaelski played OK, didn't see any undue pressure from that side, but their #1 DE was injured and didn't play. Cannot agree with those that thought Chip was asleep at the switch, thought he called a good game, and kept Oregon on their heels (was surprised when first TD was mostly passes), but I guess so did they! In crunch time, kept waiting for him to call a stunner, or the players make a spectacular play, but just didn't happen. Don't really blame Will for running out of clock, heck, happens all the time in basketball, and I didn't understand why clock didn't stop on OPI. Plenty to correct, Nebraska has always been my 'trap' game, sandwiched between Oregon and Penn St. Hopefully the Buckeyes will come out storming, and put half of Nebraska on their a**es on the opening kick-off. Oh wait, that was from The Replacements.....Oh well, Go Bucks! PS, the sun came up today, but just wasn't as bright.
Good questions and comments. I agree, this game felt weird, the play was weird, and like you, I don't know what it was exactly.

On the good side……our JJ, Ebuka, Henderson are legit. Downs too. The OL did fine….but UO’s best player, DE Burch, was missing

I’m concerned that our coaches may not have the cajones to bench Burke, JTT, and Sawyer. But they should

Major fail by the coaches on the game plan and play calling on both sides of the ball. No vertical passing game and no pressure on QB. Time management also sucked at the end of the game.
Burke had the worst game of his career. He was schooled last night and basically lost the game single handedly.
And still it was only a one point game.

Going to disagree on several points but first some agreement:

1. The defensive gameplan was bland and non-aggressive. That won't work against an offense like Oregon. You do that shit against Iowa.
2. Time Management sucked out loud.

Now onto the disagreements:

1. There was no vertical passing game by design. Oregon was playing a two deep safety scheme. Ohio State is good enough to march down the field. Take what they give you, etc. Given how bad the defense was, I'd rather hold onto the ball and get it in bits rather than chunks.

2. Overall, the offensive gameplan worked. It's not like Oregon ever really stopped Ohio State. Ohio State stopped itself on more than one occasion. 467 total yards tells me the offensive game plan was solid.

3. Burke was very bad, yes, but he didn't lose the game single-handedly. Iggy wasn't good, Hancock was bad, don't even get me started on the linebackers. Team sport. Had the defensive line done ANYTHING all night, it's a different game. Had the linebackers not bit on every little misdirection, it's a different game. The defense on all levels was bad, bland, non-aggressive and on their heels. This defense lacks discipline and clearly doesn't trust what their coaches are telling them in terms of tendencies, scheme and keys. It was very obvious all night long Oregon thought Ohio State's defenders would bite on play action and misdirection - and Ohio State's players obliged by free lancing and not staying in scheme.

4. Yes it was a one point game. It should have been around 7. Missed FG, missing XP, missed Two point conversion. In the end, you can't give up 496 yards and force no turnovers and expect to win very often.

One more thing before I go to a wedding I'd rather not go too...

I really hope none of the "worst fanbase in the land" segment of this fanbase starts tweeting and saying stupid things to the players. I figure by now it's probably already happened but hopefully it won't be too bad this time around.

Yep, I thought given the injuries we had the OL really played very well and wasn't the cause of any of our issues.
Only bummer with the line was the 3 false starts on that one first half drive - it's either unprepared or undisciplined, but it's one or the other....I guess it could be both...I try not to think about that though.
