Game Thread #2 tOSU at #3 Oregon, Sat. Oct. 12, 7:30 pm ET, NBC

We played a good team and it showed who we are.

I'm just not seeing NC winning play from this team.

I thought bringing in Chip and having Knowles would do it, but I'm not truly seeing that Chip has made this offense that great at all. I thought we'd be way better by now. Knowles D has to get pressure to be at NC winning caliber, and be better all around. Team has not gelled.

Howard is really that much better than Brown and the others, or, did he just get the start because we brought him here for that reason? I guess we'll find out what we have down the stretch. Playoffs? Well, I hope so, we should be top 12. NC? Things have got to get way better.
Brown!? Sorry no. There’s only one other possibility on that bench at QB and that’s Sayin. My biggest concern with Will is his arm strength. Hard to understand with the receivers we have that we don’t stretch the field more. That tells me there’s something the coaches are concerned about. Chip needs to stop with the Horizontal shit and the slow developing plays. Maybe not run on 2nd and long every fricking time. A little tempo would be nice to see.

I wondered when we brought in a kid from K State if he could truly play at the level the B1G would need to win a NC. Maybe he can, I don't know. One thing I do know is the team has to get a lot better all around, and maybe they will. This was like a playoff game, IMHO. Gave up a lot of yards. 2015 Bucks gave up some 400 yards iirc to Alabama to get to the NC, and won it. I expected more from Chip and Knowles.

-Offensive turnovers early. This team should have put up 41.

- The special teams gaffe.

Both HUGE momentum changers.

My issues primarily stem from the defense.

- Mental and execution lapses. DBs late and taking bad angles coming from depth. Ransom has been the biggest culprit the last couple years; highlighted by that big Dillon TD run late. Gabriel is a good athlete, not an elite runner that should have shook him like that.
- Oregon popping yardage on simple weakside runs because our edges fly too far upfield to compensate for a lack of elite twitch and bend. tOSU has had great defenses without any singular elite pass rusher. Layering your rush, being aggressive, technical, and maintaining gap integrity is all possible.

- coverage that is too aggressive on the perimeter when the pass rush isn't there. Giving up the long ball like the Bullets did last night was tragic, and Denzel lost a lot of money.

That's all I have for the moment until I rewatch.

Talent is necessary to be good.

Consistency is the key to being great.
This team lacks consistency.

Agreed on all counts. I will reiterate though, that I am not seeing that Chip has made this offense dynamic, yet. Flashes maybe.

We saw the drawback of adding the West Coast teams to the conference. It's hard to go all the way out there and win a football game. I don't know why they waited until Friday morning to leave. Thursday classes? No place to practice? NCAA needs to figure out conference alignments that make sense.

Regarding the 7 losses against top 5 teams, we know at least one of those will probably be vacated, assuming tcun was top 5 in 2022. If OSU wins the B1G championship, that's two victories against top 5 teams coming up. And I think OSU will be favored.
If we win the Conference Championship..I’d say if if if. . With Day it’s always if..,,

We have yet to see the D recruit some Bosa/Young caliber DE's. Gabriel had way too much time to throw the ball last night. Does Knowles get that fixed this season?
JTT WAS a Bosa/Young caliber recruit. He’s wildly inconsistent and disappears during games though. But as a recruit, he was on equal levels. Even if we get consistent pressure, that doesn’t keep Burke from missing tackles or getting burnt on almost every throw that went his way.

Man, we had almost 500 yards of offense and we aren’t dynamic? I think some people are having unrealistic expectations. We threw for more than 300 yards and rushed for more than 100. Were we perfect? Absolutely not but are those stats that should have been good enough to win? Absolutely.

It’s been said that JTT and Sawyer were/are first round picks and them coming back was huge. Sorry, I just don’t and haven’t seen it. JTT has occasional monster games. Sawyer has occasional plays in games, but neither are consistent game in and game out. Ransom coming back, again great experience but meh. Burke, just wow, what a mind numbing effort.

I really don’t know what Knowles is trying to do. Where’s the Jack that he was supposed to bring? LJ, what are you doing? Rushmen, who are they? Our Dline constantly gets pushed off the ball on run plays and there’s no pressure generated by the front 4 on pass plays. LBs, lots of high rated talent, but just sit back and wait instead of attacking. Back to giving up big plays in the secondary.

This defense is not as advertised for all the supposed talent we have.

I’m disgusted with last nights performance….thought we were outclassed in a lot of areas, especially game management.

That said, the refs really botched the last minute of that game.

Few things….

1. The offensive PI on Jeremiah Smith was a trash call.

2. 99% of the time, when officials make a call like that, they will alert via the head referee to the teams, that “the game clock will start on my whistle” to make it clear. That didn’t happen and it caused mass confusion. I still think most referee crews would not have started the game clock upon placement of the ball. Smith caught the ball and went OB. To go back to previous play, and start the clock, is a bit muddled….even if technically correct, and I want to dive deeper, I don’t think most crews start that clock, but if they plan to, they absolutely make the announcement that clock will start on their whistle which was not done.

3. On this point, im 100% certain. When Oregon had 12 men on the field, there were 10 seconds on clock. After running the play, (4) seconds came off the clock moving it to (6) seconds. But OSU accepted the dead-ball penalty and 5 yards that came with it. Because OSU accepted the penalty, the clock should have reverted back to 10 seconds. It’d be the same as a team accepting a neutral zone penalty on the defense. Whatever time comes off the clock from the play is put back on because the team accepts the penalty from time of snap. That (4) seconds proved to be monumental.

4. Lastly, Will Howard began his slide with 1 second. It’s clear as can be when rewatching on slo-mo. With OSU having (1) TO, and players and coaches visibly signaling for a Time-out, a very strong case can be made as soon as Howard gives himself up via the slide, a TO should’ve been granted with 1 second…..I doubt Fielding makes a 48-49 yard kick but he should’ve had an opportunity.

Am just as disappointed in the loss as any in Buckeye Nation. Maybe a bit more, dunno. tOSU D got 'handled'. I get that the Ducks WRs were good, they showed that, and yes, Gabriel has a better arm than Will. Methinks there's more than a little dissention between Knowles and LJ on how the DL should be playing. Was dissapointed in the push, guess Oregon's OL was better than anticipated? Or was tOSU's DL just not as good? Maybe Day, along with Knowles and LJ should have the proverbial 'Come to Jesus' meeting. Still doesn't excuse the DBs. Last year #1, AND then add Downs? Come on. Simply hurts to have a team pick on the #1 DB. To me, it was simply a weird game. Cannot put my finger on it, but from the jump, something was 'off' for me. LBs a bright spot, handled the TE OK, not great, but acceptable. Worst part of the game is that Simmons looks like he's done for the year. Drop off from #1 to #2 LT is significant. Michaelski played OK, didn't see any undue pressure from that side, but their #1 DE was injured and didn't play. Cannot agree with those that thought Chip was asleep at the switch, thought he called a good game, and kept Oregon on their heels (was surprised when first TD was mostly passes), but I guess so did they! In crunch time, kept waiting for him to call a stunner, or the players make a spectacular play, but just didn't happen. Don't really blame Will for running out of clock, heck, happens all the time in basketball, and I didn't understand why clock didn't stop on OPI. Plenty to correct, Nebraska has always been my 'trap' game, sandwiched between Oregon and Penn St. Hopefully the Buckeyes will come out storming, and put half of Nebraska on their a**es on the opening kick-off. Oh wait, that was from The Replacements.....Oh well, Go Bucks! PS, the sun came up today, but just wasn't as bright.
