But he still hit him in the head. He should have kept his head up to AVOID hitting the QB in the head.

Holy fuck. It was a freaking blitz. He was running full speed. He aimed for the guy's ribs.

(Overlooking the fact that Chase Young had a guy's hand inside his facemask)

Helmet to helmet contact occurs on EVERY SINGLE PLAY.

so just go ahead and eject every offensive lineman and every defensive lineman and just play seven on seven.

Because that's the letter of the bullshit rule you're defending.

The refs on the field didn't call it.

Let me repeat that. The refs on the field, that were standing RIGHT THERE, didn't call it.

Because it wasn't targeting.

Things that don't matter when applying the targeting rule:
Was the hitter on a blitz?
Was the hitter aiming for the ribs?
Did a different player have a hand on their facemask?
Do other players bump helmets on the O and D lines?
Did the refs on the field call it?

Things that do matter when applying the targeting rule:
Did the hitter hit a QB in the head with the crown of his helmet?

Had this same discussion with some friends in real time regarding the targeting. I think it is representative of exactly why they're wearing helmets in the first place. It wasn't dirty. It wasn't malicious. Football is a contact sport, and that play was A LOT of contact. The rule was put in place to take head shots out of the game, and it's been largely successful in doing that. But, football is a contact sport and these guys are wearing helmets for a reason... and that reason is... the head sometimes gets hit. Now.. all that said, it was targeting by rule. Wade can be seen leading with the crown of his helmet. That's been a penalty for a LONG time (they used to call it spearing). I could live with 15 yards, I suppose. But, ejection is just dumb. Like I said, they put the rule in place to take the head out of the game. They've largely achieved that objective. Unless a kid hauls off in some obviously malicious hit to the head, he should stay in the game.

Worse was the overturn of the scoop and score. The WR literally took 3 steps with the ball. Just pathetic.

Ohio State was the better team on the field last night but made too many mistakes. 3 drives stall in the red zone. 1 where OSU did score, but for Dobbins' not securing the catch, and the other was sure to score, but Dobbins turned his eyes and ran without the ball. (Don't get me wrong, I think JK played his heart out and ... 2000 yards? BAMF) Another mistake - going after the punt. OSU had flipped the field, was sure to get great field position. Too much risk there, in my opinion. I actually thought they got it at first, but they clearly hadn't.

Garrett Wilson...... holy shit does that kid have ups.

This is a tough one to swallow. Ohio State was the better team. But, it left too many points on the field.

Edit: I was making this post while you posted the thread lock.

The rule is 100% about intent. If it wasn't about intent, it wouldn't be called TARGETing.
You're wrong on this. I'm sorry that you're hung up on the name of the rule, but unless there's some extreme circumstance...intent doesn't matter. I'm talking extreme like a player is sliding full speed in a rain storm and another player falls into his path. Not a player tried to hit the ribs and couldn't see that the QB braced for impact because he was leading with the crown of his helmet.

I don't believe Wade tried to put his helmet into Lawrence's ear hole. But that's where it ended up, which is against the rule.

Edit: same as bkb in regards to timing.

Okay, back open for business.

I think we can all agree that the targeting call on Shaun Wade (whether right or wrong) had a huge impact on the game, so there's no need to discuss that play any further.

And if you want to discuss targeting in general - the merits of the rule, the letter of the law, the intent of the rule, the enforcement, replay booth overreach, etc., then we do have a current thread on that topic right HERE.

I just want to say, that considering everything that happened in the game, and how it happened, the season ending as it did, and the obvious emotion and disappointment immediately following a pick on a go-ahead drive, your coach handled the post-game press, and the team, as well as any coach could have. It is easy to spout platitudes and coach speak after a big win, but so much harder to present as professional and focused after a gut wrenching loss. Coach Day is a credit to your program for a long list of reasons, but how he handled this was impressive to me. Classy guy.

1) In the first half, we settled for two field goals inside the 10 yard line. Punch those in, and we're up 24-0, and Clemson can go get their fucking shinebox.

2) In the second half, we let Barbie beat us with his feet.

Reverse either of those two, amd we win the game. Not going to say this doesn't sting this morning. This could have been an all-time, if not THE all-time, Ohio State team, but it just wasn't meant to be. Future's bright though. Day needs to show that he can maintain recruiting dominance and manage his staff over time, but all indications are positive.

In an effort to process what happened last night and the recent rise in Clemson football I offer the following “theory” (tongue in cheek of course). Clemson has been chosen by God and Dabo is his mouthpiece. Think about it. God chose to use the Catholics and Notre Dame for decades giving them the breaks and their own network. Then when ND lost to the great Satan of Alabama, he had to switch Denominations and find a Southern Baptist. Enter Dabo, a former member of the Satanic Cult who promised to give all glory to God in exchange for National Championships. And God provided two. Both at the direct cost to Alabama. The “Clemsoning” immediately subsided and the rest of the ACC got worse. Last night was simply the pinnacle display of their chosen status. When OSU errors and Clemson lucky bounces weren’t enough he had to use replay officials to finish the job.

I assume that some will not see my sarcastic tone and instead call me blasphemous. I will also prepare for lightning bolts.

Dabo would certainly agree with that.
