(19) OHIO ST 75, PENN ST 64

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Ron Lewis scored 19 points and Je'Kel Foster added 13 and nine rebounds as No. 19 Ohio State pulled away in the second half for a 75-64 win over Penn State on Saturday.

The Nittany Lions hung close in a first half marked by sloppy play on both ends of the court and trailed 32-27 at halftime. But Ohio State (14-2, 4-2 Big Ten) made some easy lay-ups and hit open jumpers in the second half.

Foster set the tone, opening the second half with a steal and layup. Lewis then hit two free throws after stealing a poor pass by Jamelle Cornley.

Later, Luber lost the ball again, this time to Jamar Butler, who hit another layup to give the Buckeyes a 38-27 lead. The basket quieted what had been Penn State's loudest home crowd of the season.

A layup by Cornley got Penn State (10-6, 2-3) within 69-62 with 1 minute left, but Butler and J.J. Sullinger hit free throws to help extend the lead. Butler finished with 12 points and Sullinger had eight points and eight rebounds.

Cornley had 14 points and eight rebounds, while Geary Claxton and Travis Parker each scored 13 points to lead Penn State. The Lions played more competitively than in their last meeting against Ohio State -- a 104-69 win by the Buckeyes on Jan. 5 in Columbus.

On Saturday, Penn State rallied each time Ohio State threatened to pull away in the first half. A layup by Butler after a backcourt steal and a basket by Terence Dials gave Ohio State an 18-13 lead midway through the first half.

But Penn State capitalized after the Buckeyes were whistled for offensive fouls on their next couple of possessions, and the Lions tied the game at 18 after Mike Walker's 3-pointer from the left wing.

The scrappy play of Penn State's undersized forwards, especially the 6-foot-6 Cornley and 6-foot-5 Claxton, impressed fans after they hustled for rebounds on the offensive end.

Claxton's tip-in of a lay-up attempt by Milos Bogetic gave Penn State the lead, 26-25, with about 3 minutes left before halftime.

Ohio State would never trail again.

What i liked:
- Sylvester making smart shots on the offensive end
- Foster getting 9 boards and knocking down some treys and his free throws. hopefully getting out of his slump
- Ron Lewis taking it to PSU yet again
- Quality minutes for Twigs while Dials was out with fouls
- Free throw shooting

What I didn't like:
- So many second chances in the first half. We took care of this in the second half
- Dials in foul trouble in the first half (what a surprise)
- What happened to the Sylvester Mayes at the beginning of the season?

A must win that we pulled out. Give PSU credit for playing their hearts out, but we were simply the better team. PSU is young and has shown promise for the future. Next up Iowa a week from today :)
