'14 TX C Myles Turner (Texas Verbal)

Another ‘big’ weekend
Ohio State appears to be down to its last chance at landing an elite big man in the 2014 recruiting class.

Myles Turner, a 6-foot-10 center from Euless, Texas, and the No.2-ranked prospect nationally at his position in the 247 composite rating of major media recruiting services, is making an official visit to campus this weekend.

Also on campus for an official visit is 6-9 forward-center Payton Dastrup of Mesa, Ariz. But while he is a high-school senior, Dastrup has said he does not plan to enter college until 2016, after serving a two-year Mormon mission.

Turner is the third such prospect to visit in the past month. Seven-foot Elbert Robinson of Garland, Texas, and 6-9 Goodluck Okonoboh of Boston visited three weeks ago, when Ohio State last had a home football game. Okonoboh is ranked fourth and Robinson fifth in the 247 ranking. They have since made commitments to other schools, Okonoboh to UNLV and Robinson to LSU.

This is the first visit for Turner, who has said he will not sign with a school until the spring. He also plans to visit Texas and Kansas and, possibly, Duke, Kentucky and Oklahoma State.

Myles Turner Enjoys Ohio State; Louisville Is Out
October 21st, 2013
MYLES-TURNER-3223_5_26_150.JPG

Myles Turner
took his first official visit to Ohio State this past weekend and it went well.

“Myles told me it went really well,” David Turner, Myles’ father, told SNY.tv. “His mom and Myles went. He enjoyed it. Ohio State showed him a great time.”

David said head coach Thad Matta talked to the 6-foot-11 Trinity (TX) Euless big man about how he would be used.

“Coach does have specific ideas about how they would use him and he explained that to Myles in pretty good detail,” David said. “He wasn’t going to just stick Myles in the post and leave him there.”

Turner is now listing Ohio State, Kansas, Duke, Kentucky, Arizona, Texas and Oklahoma State, with Louisville no longer recruiting him.

Givler had a great point...Turner was supposedly down to 8 schools (Arizona, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, SMU and Texas). Well, Duke signed Okafor and Kansas signed Cliff Alexander (who you could argue is a PF not a C...but I digress). Kentucky already has Karl Towns, Jr. and Trey Lyes committed. So you can pretty much scratch those teams off the list. I doubt Myles ends up at SMU. Which leaves Arizona, Ohio State, Oklahoma State and Texas. Kansas was the perceived leader before they got Alexander and Texas is a mess right now. It's not inconceivable that OSU could win a recruiting battle against Arizona, Oklahoma State or Texas if they can overcome the distance.

I think your analysis is sound, but I get the impression that we don't fit all his criteria. We are going to have 2 seniors that he will be competing with and while I have little doubt that he could earn time over either, I am not sure thats exactly how he would see it. IT also seems like staying near home is more likely. I won't say we have no chance, but of all the '14 bigs that have spurned us so far, I felt better about our chances with all of them than I do Turner.

Crystal Ball is trending towards Oklahoma State, I guess because the starting C position theoretically could be open next year, I'm not sure. But surely after Okie State loses Marcus Smart (a lock to go pro after this year) and Markel Brown (exhausting the rest of his eligibility this year), they are going to be a much worse spot than OSU. I would hope OSU can get Myles in spite of having a bit stronger competition for PT than OK St - especially if Stillwater is as bad as the reports, that Orange Pride girls have to sleep with recruits to get them to attend their school - but I won't be too disappointed as long as Amir and Trey come back healthy next year.

WASHINGTON — The national basketball recruiting spotlight is squarely set on 6-foot-11, 225-pound Myles Turner. The senior from Trinity High School in Euless, Texas, is ranked as the nation's second-best prospect. He is the only one of the top 10 who is still unsigned.Turner had only gotten regional interest until having some breakthrough performances in some of this summer's elite camps. Those included the Amare Stoudemire Big Man Skills Academy, the NBA Top 100, the LeBron James Camp and the USA Development Camp.
"I really made a name for myself, because nobody really knew about me," said Turner, the cover boy of the Washington Tournament of Champions program. "I was doing well against some top-level competition."
Not that Turner came out of nowhere.
A post-season injury after his sophomore year stalled his coming-out party.
"I broke my ankle right after the season," Turner said. "I went up to block a shot, and when I came down, I tweaked it. But a kid fell on it, pushed it back inside, and it just snapped."

Okie State does have a 4* 6'9" C already committed to them for this recruiting class, but that's not going to scare Myles off. Even with Cliff committed to them, with Kansas underperforming like they are this year, Myles has to be licking his chops to play at a blue-blood like Kansas, which wouldn't be too terribly far from home.

As for OSU's chances, with Amir playing like he is and with Myles likely looking at being a 1-and-done player, I could see Myles looking at a better situation than the one at Ohio State where he would be the only go-to player in the post. With that said, I could see Myles being a 50/50 timeshare with Amir and be the go-to player in year 2, if he were to return. I'd absolutely LOVE to see him play alongside fellow Texan Mickey Mitchell if he were to come back.

Matta's history with premier C recruits and our new facilities have got to be big positives for Ohio State, but I see him committing to Kansas during the spring period. I certainly hope I'm wrong, because I think Myles would do amazing things here. Whether or not we get Myles, Ohio State will have a great situation to promote to a C for the 2015 class, especially with being able to play alongside blue chip PFs Mickey & Keita.

Man, I wish you wouldn't have said that bold part because I am firmly convinced that there is not a better situation on the court for Myles than Ohio State. Now, there are other places that are closer, which may cause him to pick somewhere else. But he knows he'd be going to a top-10 program in Columbus. He would not know that at Oklahoma State - no doubt they will take a step back without Marcus Smart and Markel Brown even if they added Myles because their guard play will take a step back. The facts as I see them are that Ohio State is where Myles has the clearest opening to significant minutes on a top-10 team. Yeah, he can be "the man" on a poorer team, but your top-7 probably doesn't include KY, DU and KU teams that already have top-10 big men in their recruiting classes if you would rather be the man on a good team than part of a great team. He's going to have to earn his minutes no matter where he goes, but it's pretty clear he would have an adequate role as a freshman at Ohio State - can't see Trey or Dave Bell being ahead of him and with Amir being inconsistent, that opens up more PT potentially. Also, I don't think at this point that it's even worth analyzing him being a sophomore in college because there's an overwhelming tendency for guys rated as high as he is to be 1 & done these days. Kansas is clearly going to have tougher competition for minutes than Ohio State - not only do they have top-10 recruit Cliff Alexander, but also Arkansas transfer Hunter Mickleson who was a 4-star recruit a few years ago and will be eligible in what will be Myles' freshman year. OSU should have a great situation to promote to the 2015 class regardless.

I think Ohio State could be a favorite for the NC next season with Turner. Shannon Scott is a terrific leader, Sam Thompson will be a steadying influence as a senior, and I think a frontcourt with Turner and Williams would be dominant. The other super frosh would make this nearly a Kentucky Wildcat-like class.

I look at Myles Turner as more of a PF in this OSU offense because of his ability to step away from the basket, as well as the fact he is not particularly stout. If he went to the NBA, he'd be a 4, and I think he could play that position at OSU. Use him much the way OSU used Deshaun Thomas and I think he would produce very similarly on the offensive end, not to mention on the defensive end with his ability to alter shots.

Didn't Myles' dad even make mention that Duke is not out of the equation because they feel as though he could/would play more of a PF role alongside Okafor?

He could be a 4/5 here, get tons of touches both in the post and with his outside shooting, and use his athleticism effectively on the defensive side where he would not necessarily have to guard bulldozer centers all game long. I agree with DZ83CK - I do not see a better option, on paper, than what he has in Columbus, especially considering the mix of upper and underclassmen.
