Myles Turner stakes claim as biggest riser of the summer

Myles Turner picked up more than 60 offers in the weeks following his breakout performance. (Under Armour/Kelly Kline) Myles Turner picked up more than 60 offers in the weeks following his breakout performance. (Under Armour/Kelly Kline)

The biggest story of the spring and summer AAU scene was undoubtedly the emergence of Myles Turner.

Turner, a 7-footer from Trinity (Texas), burst onto the scene back in May at the Under Armour Invitational, followed that up with a big-time performance at the NBPA Top 100 Camp in June ? and then solidified his spot among 2014's elite with an outstanding July period.

In my opinion, he is slotted at No. 2 in the class of 2014, right behind consensus top prospect Jahlil Okafor. In fact, Turner might have the highest ceiling of any player in the senior class.

The scary thing is that Turner is only getting better.

?I really feel like my outside shot is coming a bit more,? he said earlier this month. ?I've always had an outside jumper, but I'm working on it a lot, it's really what I do. It's starting to come around. I've always been a defensive presence; I feel like I'm getting my timing better, blocking shots. Really, just being able to dominate defensively, turn defensive possessions into offensive possessions.?

Comparing himself to LaMarcus Aldridge, Turner envisions himself as an inside-outside player at the next level. He's got tremendous length and athleticism, enabling him to alter shots and dominate the glass. Offensively, he has perimeter range, but can also finish around the basket and runs the floor well. In general, he's an absolute matchup nightmare.

Turner continues to look at NBA players in an effort to tailor his game and adjust some tendencies.

?I always look at older guys, have a thirst for knowledge,? he said.

I feel like OSU's chances of getting Turner are trending "up" with the recent news. If Okafor picks Duke and Cliff Alexander picks KU, then Turner might "fall" to OSU. UK already has a 5* 7-footer committed in his class in Karl Towns. UNC is not on Turner's list of 8. Turner is waiting until January or February to make a commitment, which might help OSU as those other guys might make a commitment elsewhere beforehand (and it would be before guys who could be early entries already at those other schools would actually leave). On the other hand, he might just favor Kansas and want to be paired with Alexander.

It seems like these days if you want a top-notch kid to come to your school you are going to have to pry them away from Duke, KU and UK, that's why I asked. Figured they were both in the running. Just seems like the norm lately. Rosters full of 5 star recruits. The rich keep getting richer.

Yeah, KU and UK are both on his list. But again, with UK already having a 5* 7-footer at his position in his class, the natural tendency is for a highly regarded prospect such as Turner to go elsewhere. Honestly, it's only because Calimari is basketball's recruiting dynamo that UK is even on his list to some extent. They only play with one big typically, and as I said before they already have Towns committed in Turner's class. Just can't see Turner picking UK. KU on the other hand, plays with two bigs, so theoretically you could see the potential for him and Alexander to team up although I'm not sure they would want to do that.

Been a rough couple of years here in Lawrence for me being a Buckeye. My 4th year in Lawrence. I follow the team pretty closely but nothing like I follow Buckeye football and hoops. KU football season is just dreadful. I have lost my share of bets in the past 2 years involving the basketball Bucks, going 0-3 vs. KU and taking it on the chin against Wichita St. last year has been tough to swallow. Buckeye banners, flags, license plates and magnets on the car. My colors still fly proud every day regardless. Go Bucks!!!

I love Jahlil Okafor as a player, but Myles is the big man I personally would most love to see in an Ohio State uniform out of this recruiting class. Pair him with KBD, Tate, Russell, and Bell, along with what is already on the roster and ... wow.

His game reminds me a little of Anthony Davis, with a more refined offensive repertoire but not as good ball-handling skills (although to be fair to Myles, the highlights don't really allude to whether he can or cannot handle the ball well for a big man). He's definitely a game-changer on both sides of the ball.
