They recruited 3 backs in the 2009 class (Berry, Hall, and Hyde). I would love to see an offer to Shell. He has stated that his favorite are the bucks and a trio like that would be the best haul of running backs in not only the nation in 2012, but in a recent memory. All are 5 star quality guys.
The depth situation was different at that time. With Dunn and Ball now on board, added to Berry, Hall, Rod Smith and Hyde...I think the boat is full. Ridiculously full. Even if an offer went out to Shell, that depth has to be scary.

IMO, this is a guy you make room for, regardless of how many backs you already have. Just a matter of whether or not he wants to compete with the other guys.

We seem to worry about scholarship numbers every year, and every year it doesn't end up being a problem. A class starting at 13-14 two years before NSD could easily end up close to 20 with inevitable attrition and whatnot.

Considering we never seem to take the full allotment of scholarships that we can in a class (leaving 1-2 schollies on the table from guys announcing elsewhere on NLOID), I think it's a no brainer you take this kid, let alone offer him. He's a playmaker with the ball in his hands, a potential game changer, and he wants to come here. You can't have enough playmakers on your team. Just find a way to get your best guys on the field when it comes time.

Interested to see what the coaching staff thinks of this delightful situation we seem to be in here.

ONE OF THE NATION'S TOP 2012 RBs STILL VERY INTERESTED IN OSU ... With Ohio State reeling in early commitments from class of 2012 tailbacks Warren Ball (DeSales/Columbus) and Bri'onte Dunn (Glenoak/Canton), many are now wanting to know what the status is of Aliquippa (PA) Hopewell star runner, Rushel Shell.

Shell, who may be the top back in the nation for 2012, told The Buckeye Times back in July that OSU "is my No. 1 school as of right now."

Shell informed The Buckeye Times on Monday that nothing has changed since then.

He stated that OSU is still one of his top schools and that he hasn't set a time table for his commitment.

You might have a slight case of amnesia. USC's class in 2007 was absolutely insane at the RB position. They got the #1 and #2 RBs as well as the #14! I don't think our guys will be nearly that high. All of them aren't 5 star quality, probably only one 5 star and two high 4 stars. A stellar RB coup, don't get me wrong, but not touching(as far as rankings) USC's. Now our depth, is definitely comparable to theirs

Sorry, I meant in recent memory for the bucks. Good points though. As for the star ratings, it depends on which recruiting service you value most. ESPN only lists somewhere between 10-15 5 star prospects, while Scout lists near 40. So, depending on which site you prefer, they could potentially all be 5 stars, with Ball being the least likely, IMHO.

I agree with you about Ball. And to no fault of his own, you can't help getting injured, but that's gonna affect his ranking a lot. Shell IMO has a better shot at being a 5 star than Dunn. I just think a lot of the recruiting sites don't give Ohio that much love on the offensive side of the ball. And if you're talking about just the Bucks, than I totally agree, just getting 2 of the 3 is a monumental haul, 3 is just something you see in video games, lol

I hope we don't take 3 running backs, I think even 1 is enough. There is no point to have all these runningbacks If they all can't play. We have other more important positions of need like offensive line. There is 5 lineman on the field at once, and only 1 RB. We need to go after more lineman or else none of these running backs will be good.

Man, talk about your mixed emotions. Seeing the "verbal offer" next to his name is a huge relief that the staff is apparently still pursuing him, but then the diminished interested in the Buckeyes portion is a painful blow. Hopefully the staff can reassure him that he'll be playing for a team that's known for it's run game, and point to the use of guys like Hall and Berry. (Hall playing as a true freshman, Berry waiting until this year due to the hamstring injury)

A guy whose interest in Ohio State is diminished due to a desire to play as a freshman, combined with already having two backs and limited scholarships in the class, combined with Ohio State's depth chart at RB, combined with Tressel's soft sell approach, combined with other coaches not soft sell approach doesn't equal Shell being a Buckeye in my opinion.

Too bad, because he looks like a great player, but not a big deal or something worth worrying either way about.
