PIAA makes rulings on three WPIAL athletes

* Hopewell and star running back Rushel Shell can still make the WPIAL playoffs, despite a 1-3 record in conference. But Hopewell needs to beat Central Valley Friday, win at least one more game and then hope for some help. Hopewell most likely would be the only WPIAL finalist from last year not to make the playoffs this year. The other seven are pretty much in.

- Rushel Shell had yet another huge game. Surprise, surprise. That's nothing new. His 392 yards and three touchdowns helped Hopewell improve to 2-4 with a 28-26 victory over New Castle, which has rapidly cooled off from a fast start. Shell faces a tough test this week in Central Valley, a newly-formed school from the mergers of Center and Monaca. After Friday night, Shell needs just 42 yards to hit 5,700 for his career.

First Commonwealth Athlete of the Week: Rushel Shell, Hopewell << 93.7, The Fan

This week’s First Commonwealth Athlete of the Week is Rushel Shell, a junior tailback for the Hopewell football team.

Although he and the rest of the Vikings are still a long way from the coveted WPIAL championship that barely fell out of reach last season, Shell can add another title to his high school resume after his legendary performance in Week 6.

In a hard-fought 28-26 triumph at New Castle last Friday, Shell sliced and diced the Red Hurricane’s defense for 392 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries to surpass Chico Williams of Aliquippa as the number one rusher in Beaver County history. Shell is now fifth on the WPIAL’s all-time list with 5,659 yards and still has a minimum of 12 games remaining as a high school player to catch District 7 career leader Mike Vernillo of Fort Cherry (7,646 yards), barring health or other issues.

With Hopewell clinging to a one-point lead early on Shell extended that advantage in the second quarter with the first of his three scores, a 78-yard jaunt that made it 13-6 Vikings prior to Nate Bowden’s extra point.

New Castle pulled ahead 20-14 in the fourth quarter, but the Vikings answered right back with Shell capping off another scoring drive with a ten-yard run that tied the game, and another P.A.T. by Bowden put Hopewell ahead to stay. Shell then silenced the Taggart Stadium crowd with the kind of play he has so often made look easy: a 92-yard run to paydirt that proved to be the difference-maker, as a potential game-tying two-point conversion pass by John Matarazzo later fell incomplete.

The win was the first in Parkway Conference play for fifth-place Hopewell and kept its dimming playoff hopes alive with games remaining against Central Valley, Ambridge, and West Allegheny.

In case you were wondering, Rushel Shell needs 1,988 yards to become the WPIAL?s all-time leading rusher.

Assuming the worst-case scenario - that is, Hopewell doesn?t play a single playoff game for the remainder of Shell?s career - Shell has 12 games left. He?ll need to average 166 yards per game to pass Fort Cherry?s Mike Vernillo for first place.

4. Hopewell running back Rushel Shell rushed for 392 yards last week against New Castle. That moved the 6-2, 220-pound wrecking ball into fifth place on the WPIAL all-time rushing list with 5,659 yards. He?s less than 100 yards from the No. 4 spot. By the way, Shell is only a junior.

I know that Ohio has better HSFB than PA, I'm just stating that the career rushing yard leaders aren't the best metric in a players college potential.

Jordan Mabin is at Northwestern as a CB
Marcus Hall ended up at Cincinnati after OSU
Donnie Johnson went to PSU
Brock Bolen ended up at Louisville after Illinois
Marcus Sanders signed with Minnesota
Marc Edwards played at Notre Dame
Jeff Rogan had horrible grades, but was a D-I athlete.

Oh, and to keep it on topic, although the PA list pales in comparison to that of Ohio, Shell is better than any of the Ohioans on that list.
