'12 PA RB Rushel Shell (Pitt Signee; Transfer to West Virginia)

Smoke-less tobacco? No wonder I hadn't heard of this incident. Considering the bone-headed things I did/experimented with in high school this kid is a saint and I sure as heck won't hold that against him. I still think he is special and along with Ball want on the team. The only concern is that he outgrows the position but then again if he still has the speed and burst who am I to conjecture a position change? Bottom line, I like this kid a lot and he seems to like/respect Ohio State for what it is, a great place to learn/develop/play ball.

WPIAL AAA Competition is very solid across the board. I can not not wait to catch a couple of Shell's games ( will go to the West Allegheny game to see Caputo) and see Ball again.

I have not seen Dunn in person, but I do not agree with the comparisons to Shell from the small film I have seen.

Shell reminds me an awful lot of Ray Rice former Rutgers RB and Baltimore Raven.

Shell is 5-11 210 and 16 yrs old. J Stew is 6-0 235 right now. If you watch their videos back to back you will know what I'm talking bout.
I don't see the comparison at all. Stewart is a power back at heart with a nice burst. Shell is more of a speed back with vision, wheels, and some shake.

I'd say Shell compares very favorably to Ray Rice and Steve Slaton stylistically in their running abilities.

Brionte Dunn is a better comparison to Stewart, but a think a better comparison stylistically would be Raymont Harris.

Please watch 1:18 of this video...[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYoXXqZ9qhs]YouTube - HOPEWELL HIGH SCHOOL VS MOON RUSHEL SHELL RUNNING PLAYS[/ame]
Not bad for a "speed back." As a former running back and someone who has coached a lot of running backs, I can see similarities...Stewart is a patient back with great vision as is Shell. Both have thick lower bodies and make good lateral cuts.Steve Slaton lacks the power that Shell runs with but has quicker feet. I just watched a video of Ray Rice at Rutgers and I take back what I said in my previous post. I do see the comparison there as well. Just a taller vesion.

Those clips above don't do this kid justice. The video above really showcases his running ability against a good team from last season.

That run at 1:18 is simply amazing.

I watched that video when making my post. 1 clip does not a back make.

Comparing Shell to the premier HS power back of 5-6 years ago isn't a good comparison. Everyone back then was comparing Stewart to Eddie George and other elite power backs of the last 10 years or so, and Shell isn't Eddie. I haven't looked up Stewart's HS film since we recruited him 5-6 years ago, but compare that film to Shell's. You might have a different opinion.

He's somewhere between Rice and Slaton stylistically, in my opinion. He reminds me a LOT of Rice (slippery, can break tackles, runs extremely well on either side and up the middle, knows the perfect time to make the cut), but he's got more shake, has more wheels, and has more of a home run ability that remind me more of Slaton. In conclusion, he's really his own back stylistically (in the modern game, anyways) and he's a darn good one.

No matter how you slice it, Shell is a HECK of a pick up for whomever is fortunate to get his services and I'd love to see Shell in S&G.

THE SKINNY

Scouting services consider him one of the top players in the country for the Class of 2012. Shell was terrific as a freshman and sophomore, rushing for 4,256 yards. He's only the second player in WPIAL history to rush for 4,000 yards by his sophomore season. He had 2,740 yards last season, including 275 in the WPIAL Class AAA title game, and has a chance at the WPIAL career record of 7,646, set by 2000 Fort Cherry graduate Mike Vernillo.
COLLEGE TALK

Pitt, Penn State, Ohio State, Alabama and Florida are among the schools that already have offered scholarships. Pitt made its offer to Shell when he was a freshman.

Q: I've heard that you like Ohio State.

A: That's true. Ohio State is my top school right now, but everyone has a chance. They're all pretty much even.
