BOYS' BASKETBALL - Turson steps down as Plymouth coach

COLUMBUS ? Plymouth boys? basketball coach Brad Turson turned in his resignation before leaving with his son, Brook, for the state tournament Thursday morning.

?It was no secret that this probably would happen,? Turson, 51, said. ?No matter, it was still a tough decision to make."

Turson's career ended when his team lost a heart-breaking 56-54 overtime decison to Lima Central Catholic Saturday in the Division III Bowling Green regional final.

Don't just measure Brad Turson's success as Plymouth's basketball coach by his 245 wins in 17 seasons or the four district championships in the last five years.
"I truly think he got the most out of his players and helped them to be better young men," said Plymouth senior Brook Turson, suiting up for his dad one last time Wednesday night as a North all-star in the 32nd News Journal Classic at Lexington High School. "Some of his most untalented teams were the best because they played as a unit. That's the mark of a great coach."
Brook Turson, one of just four players in the area's rich basketball history to score over 2,000 points in his career, ranks No. 1 on the Plymouth charts. Brothers Graig, a 2002 all-star, and Brett, a 2005 all-star, rank third and fourth, respectively, with well over 1,000 points apiece.
Coaching all three of his sons at the varsity level made the years fly by for Brad Turson. He'll finally have some time to stop and smell the lingering scent of success, having quietly submitted his resignation to school administrators last week.
He didn't want any fanfare; he didn't announce it at the team banquet or broadcast it to the media. To the News Journal's 2009-10 Coach of the Year, basketball was always about his family -- and his extended family.

Speaking for myself, it was a great honor to play for Coach Turson during my High school days. He has done wonderful things for the Plymouth High School Basketball program in his 17+ years of coaching. I for one only wish him the absolute best in the future, whatever may come his way. If someone deserves it, it's Coach Turson. Great man, Great Mentor, Great Dad, and certainly a wonderful Coach and teacher of the game of Basketball. I'll repost career record later for Coach Turson, but what a loss to the North Central Ohio Coaching ranks, but bigger and better things for Coach await. We still get to see him coach one more time in the News Journal All-Star Classic in the coming weekends. Thanks Coach!!

Through what i've seen of Brook Turson, i'll say it is truly a shame, with all of the Division 1 University's and Colleges in Ohio, not withstanding Ohio State, that Brook's only offers were from OOS schools. What a shame, Kent Stat, Ohio, Akron, Toledo, Miami-Oh, Cleveland State, Cincy, Xavier, and Ohio State, all missed. OSU-bound Aaron Craft gets held to 5-22 shooting against LCC as Liberty Benton got blown out in their district semi game. Brook comes out and lays 29 on them(with less talent surrounding him) in a very impressive performance, leaving their coach to tell him that he was the best player they have played against all year. Pretty high accolades, and can't say I disagree. Ohio colleges/Universities really missed on this one.
This was a nice little thread about a nice player from a small town making good until you had to bring in comparing an Ohio State recruit and saying how much better (by implication) Brook was better than the Ohio State recruit. If Brook was that much better why did he receive other offers:huh: from other colleges or just maybe he wanted to go to Robert Morris. I don't know I can find his profile on Rivals or Scout but I sure can find Craft's profile and I hope you do know that he was offered by other schools and had given Tennessee (now that would have not been good) a verbal commitment. It has been nice reading about Brook but I think there are other people out there who know a little bit more about basketball than you and I.

Well LitlBuck, why wouldn't I compare him to Craft? I'm an OSU fan, I think thats rightfully so. Craft received the scollie that 300+ other Ohio High school basketball players would have gave their left arm for.(after their playing careers of course)Craft is a heck of a player, i've actually seen him play. I have never said otherwise. and my implication that Brook is better than Craft, in comparing a common opponent in LCC, who had the better game? I think they both have their strong points. Craft is a shut down defender. Thats what is most impressive part of his game to me. Brook is solid. I think the point of this post was to state that Brook was severely under-recruited by all Ohio Schools. And to me, Craft got the golden ticket. I think it's a good, fair compairison. They both have very similar numbers. Craft played on All Ohio Red with the other OSU recruits. Brook played on CBiz with Nick Kellogg, and Brad Pheil(who's at Robert Morris). Nick is a great player too. but if you ever watched their AAU team, Brook is the one that made it go. It just really suprised me that the small town kid( as you say) got No love from any D1 Universities, and it's a darn shame. So, in closing. We'll just have to sit back. See how Brook developes, see how hard Brook works at RMU, and see if I'm right. or if i'm just blowing smoke. A little love would have been nice for my small town Ohio kid. Oh, and the D4 player of the year 2 times in Brook gets stuck of the 2nd team in D3, even though his numbers improved in every catagorie? another shame on the sports writers.
Thanks LitlBuck, its always good talking Brook/hoops with you. I always enjoy your posts on the prospects and players.

I'm from Turson's area and have a few pretty big high school bball connections still there (coaches, hs fans, etc.). From what I have heard, most think Turson is a little too slow with his feet for his size to be a MAC player. Craft doesn't have that problem. Not meant to be a knock on Turson, he's a great player.

I've heard that same knock on Brook.(I don't know if I agree or disagree, i suppose it dosn't really matter what I think) I'm excited to see how he dose at RMU. I'm excited to see Craft at OSU. I heard that before Brook graduates at RMU they'll get a game at the Schot vs OSU. I'll be wearing an OSU hat and an RMU shirt. I love games like that. A couple years down the road, we get to see these kids develop, and hopefully become great college players. I'm not knocking Craft in any way. I think he's a nice player. He's just my measuring point, and I think Brook measures up pretty well. Oh and I read that LCC beat Orville for the state title, signifint because they knocked both Liberty-Benton and Plymouth out of the Tournament

Town support fuels Plymouth seniors

Five state-bound Plymouth seniors got their diplomas after returning from regionals Friday: front, Alex Mowry and Mitch McKenzie; back, Andy Hale, Brook Turson and Jeremiah Long. (SUBMITTED PHOTO)

It's been more of an eventful spring than Turson ever imagined. In addition to running track for the first time since seventh grade, he changed his mind about his basketball future. Because of a coaching move, the News Journal's two-time Player of the Year was granted his release from a scholarship to Robert Morris and is now deciding between Mid-American Conference rivals Miami and Central Michigan.

Their bus rolled in around 11 p.m.
"Almost the whole town was there," senior Alex Mowry said. "We just figured on family and close friends, but that was a huge shock. We didn't expect that kind of turnout. It was awesome. It was better than regular graduation."

Turson, the All-Ohio basketball star, runs on the 4 x 200 meter relay team with Hale and juniors Justin Miller and Derrick Beers.

I was looking forward to seeing him at Robert Morris. The MAC will be a lot better fit for his friends/family from Ohio as far as traveling goes though. BrownBuckeye, I take it he actually has offers from Miami and Central Mich now? Are those the only two that came through with a late offer?

I noticed this in that article linked in the previous post:

"I'm just glad I made it in something," Turson said. "Every year since I was a little kid, I've been going to the state (basketball) tournament and I really wanted to get there. To make it to Columbus, in anything, is a real privilege."

I know a lot of big basketball families (i.e. there's a long string of very good Turson's from Plymouth) from smaller schools that have always done the same thing growing up as Brook said in that quote. I love the mystique that traditions like that build for the state tournament for those people, It adds a whole new level for how bad you want it as a player/coach/fan.

MAC is a better fit for his style of play as well IMO.

At last I heard, Brook was to make a visit to Miami, Oh on Monday and Central Michigan on Wednesday. And the Miami visit didn't happen(ran out of room at the 12 hour, so I hear). So a Chippewa he is. I do know he was really dissapointed when Coach Rice left RMU for Rutgers. He liked him a lot, he seemed to be a real class act. Then Brad Pheil left for Findlay and Langhurst decided to go to Europe and play basketball. His next choice was Central Michigan. and they were pretty even in his recruiting. Really tough choice initially, then when Rice left, and everything else fell with the team his comfort level left too. I think he knew Central Michigan was the right/place fit for him. It was a real adult decision for him. He weighed his options, watched the chips fall, and made a, what I think, is a good decision.
Heck, i kept trying to get him to come/check out/contact Northern Illinois. I'm a crappy recruiter.

Cool, Central Mich has a really good class coming in. Easily #1 in the MAC IMO, with OU right behind. The coaches son, #28 overall on rivals, is going there. Could be a fun 4-5 years for Brook.

five incoming freshmen who comprise a recruiting class that was ranked at the top of the Mid-American Conference according to several outlets.

I hear the Coaches son Trey is the real deal. An All-American that turned down ScUM, and Sparty amongst other big school to play for his Dad.
Now add Brook and thats a heck of a haul for Central Michigan. Practice will be pretty competitive. Should be a nice 4-5 years for Brook. Central Michigan has a really nice campus, plenty of community support for the university sports programs. I've heard it call a really mini- Ohio State campus. Ohio University looks really good on paper also. Should be fun.

A few of my co-workers that went there have said they loved it. The football program has fired up the fanbase and now they're pumped for Zeigler to get there (at least in metro Detroit where I live). One of the main sports radio guys in Detroit is a Chippewa alum so they get more airtime around here than you'd think. Should be a fun atmosphere.
