Area basketball makes dent on roster

Area basketball teams were well represented Sunday afternoon at the All-District 6 team selections held at Galion High School.
The father-son combination of Brad and Brook Turson of Plymouth were named the Coach and Player of the Year in Division IV. The eldest Turson has guided the Big Red to a 16-1 record and a second Firelands Conference championship in two seasons, while Brook is averaging 22.3 points, 10.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists to lead the team in each category.

Boys hoops: Plymouth complete perfect league season

Everyone got into the act during an 88-34 victory over Crestview that ran the Big Red Vikings' Firelands Conference championship record to 14-0 amid a 19-1 season.
"It really couldn't have been a better Senior Night," Plymouth coach Brad Turson said. "That's a group that won four or five games as seventh-graders and four or five games as eighth-graders, but they all hung with it. They all really enjoy the game and work very hard. This is a tremendous reward for them."
Junior guard Brook Turson turned in his usual performance with 14 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and four steals, but it was a night for the senior class to shine.

Plymouth's Turson: Family ties that bind

"it was during that game that the Turson family became the unofficial bookends of Plymouth basketball history. Brad entered the season, his 16th, as the all-time wins leader at the school while oldest son Graig was second all-time and middle son Brett was third.
That all changed slightly for the better last Friday as the youngest Turson took his place atop the all-time leading scorers list for the Big Red after scoring 32 points in the win over the Flyers. Brook, a 6-foot-3 guard, needed 18 points entering the contest to pass Steve Hall, who scored 1,298 points from 1984 to 1987, for the top spot.
Entering the year with 902 points, Turson passed six players for the top spot and has scored 411 points in 18 games this season and currently has 1,313 points with another two regular season games left in his junior season
While never one to gloat about personal family accolades, Brad Turson was able to talk about not only the close victory against St. Paul, but also about his family's place in Plymouth history.
"It is special to me," he said. "I also went to school here, and we always wanted to come back to Plymouth and build a quality program. I'm not only proud of what my sons have accomplished here, but I'm proud of every player that has come through the program."
Turson felt a love of the sport propelled all three of his sons to the 1,000-point club.
"My sons worked hard for what they got and they really just loved the game of basketball," he said. "But again, that goes for everyone else also. Every player involved in this program has played a key role. We've certainly had a lot of fun over the years getting the program to this point and we want to continue to do that."
Brook was also quick to recognize not only the accomplishments of Hall, but that he had a tougher road to his point total than he did.
"It's a nice accomplishment obviously, but especially because Steve Hall was such a great player," Brook said. "And I think he did it for three years without the 3-point line. I was able to break his record, but I did it a little different because I had the 3-point line. But this is also a team award, just like the 1,000 points earlier this year. I couldn't do it without my teammates, they are a great group of guys."

Boys sectional hoops tourney: Lucas, Plymouth move on to districts

Crestline coach Randy Endsley said the plan was to slow the tempo and control junior point guard Brook Turson.
"It went out the window and we changed on the fly," Endsley said. "Fortunately, we had Michael Rhodes step up and do a nice job."
Turson finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds, while Brandon McCalley added 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocks, and Mitch McKenzie had six steals for seventh-ranked Plymouth (20-1).
"We have experience in tournament games and I thought we used that to our benefit tonight," Coach Turson said. "Whenever you cut the nets, it's a special night"

Boys tourney hoops: Plymouth holds off rally to earn district finals ticket

"I think we really felt we had the game in hand," Plymouth junior guard Brook Turson said. "Unfortunately, we let them go on a run at the end of the quarter. I went out with fouls which wasn't a very smart thing. I still felt we had the game in hand. With the tournament experience we have, we felt we could push the lead out again in the fourth quarter."
That's exactly what happened.
Back on the court, Turson started the fourth with a three-point play, then a stick back and finally a half-court assist to Cody Smith on the fastbreak. Just that quickly the lead was back to double digits and the Big Red wouldn't be threatened again, validating their confidence.
"At the start of the fourth, we show- ed good composure," said Plymouth coach Brad Turson, Brook's father. "Brook took over a little bit and got some other people involved and we made some free throws down the stretch."
The younger Turson had 30 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals, while junior Brandon McCalley backed him with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
"Turson is a nice player and always does what he wants to do. He takes shots when he needs to and passes when he had to," said St. Mary coach Lyle Falknor who was the longtime coach at Bellevue.

:)Good luck to Plymouth in the districts. Hopefully they can continue to win but Brook needs to stay out of foul problems. I know he is only a sophomore but have any college coaches come to see him play this past season. Thank you for all of your updates. It is nice to read about a small high school in Ohio.

Brook is a Junior. A bunch of small schools, And I know he has a few MAC schools lare ooking at him so far. I hear he's talked with Wisconsin and Penn State but no offers that I know of as of yet. He'll be a steal for whatever school he decides to go to. Big basketball IQ.

Turson, Rickert, Sheldon top area?s district hoops honorees

The Plymouth junior was selected one of three Division IV Players of the Year when the All-Northwest District team was announced Wednesday night.

Turson shared the award with New Knoxville senior Brad Piehl and Toledo Ottawa Hills senior Ethan Michael. Piehl is headed to Division I Robert Morris, while Michael is bound for the Air Force Academy.
?They are both great players,? Turson said.

A do-it-all point guard, Turson averaged 22.1 points, 10.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 3.1 steals a game for the Firelands Conference-champion Big Red (21-1). He already is the program?s career scoring leader, passing older brothers Brett and Graig among others this season.

?Breaking the scoring record and being selected the district player of the year, those things are a testament to the team?s success,? Turson said. ?Those things are more about the people I have played with here the last three years.?

Plymouth headed back to Sweet 16
Big Red stops Norwalk St. Paul in D-IV district title game

"I don't know if it's fatigue or they stepped up the pressure," St. Paul coach Mike Smith said. "The kids executed the game plan the way I wanted to defensively and offensively. The difference in the game is Brook finished out in the fourth quarter, but we made it tough on him tonight."
Turson ended with 22 points, nine rebounds, four steals and four assists, while McCalley backed him with 10 points and eight rebounds. Coach Smith said they wanted to clog the lane to shut down Turson's penetration and McCalley and Dylan Brown's play in the paint.
However, Plymouth didn't leave itself much room for error. Turson picked up his fourth foul with 6:04 showing, yet his father never thought of sitting him.
"My teammates react off of me so it wasn't the time to pout or hang your head. It was time to play," said Brook Turson, a Northwest District Player of the Year. "You just have to be a little more smart when you pick up your fourth.

Then came the shot that probably only Turson would have tried, a long, near NBA length, three-ball high off the right elbow that swished the net. The shot regained the lead for Plymouth with 2:15 left.
St. Paul's ability to keep track of Turson after the first two minutes of the game had much to do with their holding the lead for much of the first three quarters. Turson scored on back-to-back three-point plays in the first 2 minutes, but wouldn't score again in the first half until 1:15 was left.

"Our defense was unbelievable," Flyer coach Mike Smith said after the game. "Our goal was to keep Brook (Turson) out of the lanes and until that last quarter, we were successful. Our kids were really locked in defensively. But, Plymouth was equally strong on the other end."

Boys hoops tourney: Regional tourney stays unkind to Plymouth

Big Red falls to Kalida for third Sweet 16 loss in four years

Making its third trip to the Division IV regional semifinals in four years, Plymouth met a familiar fate Tuesday in a 64-46 loss to Kalida at Bowling Green State University's Anderson Arena.
The 6-foot-3 junior guard scored 12 of his 17 points in the final five minutes of the second quarter to pull Plymouth within 28-26 at intermission.
"I felt the rhythm of the game a little more," Brook Turson said of his personal 12-3 run, "which is sad because I should have felt it the whole game. We were getting in the passing lanes and picking up the pressure on defense and that sparked our fans. When you get the fans behind you, a lot of adrenaline gets going."
However, Turson, the Big Red and the fans couldn't sustain it. After going 8-for-8 from the floor in the first half, Turson took just two shots in the final two quarters and missed both.
"They ran one guy with me all night and jumped out on screens," Brook Turson said of the box-and-one imposed on him. "They're very tough and a very physical defense to penetrate the gaps."

Prep boys basketball: Plymouth's Turson first-team All-Ohio

PLYMOUTH -- The annual trip to the state basketball tournament will be bittersweet for Brook Turson.

Plymouth's junior point guard and first-team All-Ohioan is still wondering what could have been after a 64-46 regional semifinal loss to Kalida last week in the Division IV Bowling Green regional semifinals. Kalida won the regional title and will play Lutheran East in the first Division IV state semifinal game Thursday at 10:45 a.m. at Value City Arena.
"That first game Thursday morning is going to be tough to watch," said Turson, one of three north central Ohioans recognized when the Division III and Division IV All-Ohio teams were released Tuesday. "Being a first-team All-Ohioan is a nice accomplishment, but it all boils down to wins. I'd rather have the opportunity to play this weekend."
