'10 OH OL Andrew Donnal (Iowa Verbal)

May 20, 2009
Another lineman with USC offer
By Eric Guimaraes

OL Andrew Donnal (6-7 280) of Whitehouse, OH has an offer from USC. He has 24 in all including offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Purdue, Vanderbilt, Maryland, Kansas, and NC State. Donnal is a three sport star and says that basketball and track have helped him with his athletic ability and footwork on the football field. He took junior day visits to Michigan, Michigan St,, Ohio State, Iowa, and Indiana. "They all have really great coaching staffs," said Donnal. "I liked them all. Ohio State had some amazing football facilities. They're some of the nicest in the country." Donnal says distance from home will not be a factor when choosing a school. "That isn't really going to matter to me," he said. "I figure I won't have time to do much of anything other than football and studying anyway." He says the Gamecocks are a school he is considering. "(Steve) Spurrier has a good track record and does a good job of surrounding himself with good coaches," said Donnal. He did not name any favorites.

BN $ - Did Donnal Secure Offer At OSU Camp?

6/15

By Helwagen...talks about some of the things he learned from Coach Bollmanat camp...schools he mentions looking strong at are Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State and Maryland...wants to narrow his list to 10 soon but is in no hurry to decide.

Is it a numbers game for Donnal when it comes to OSU? You should have somewhere around 16 'ships to offer this year, more possibly with transfers, etc.

With taking 4 OL in the previous 3 classes, and assuming a normal add of a QB, RB, WR, CB as well as adding a couple DT's and safeties based on need, that is 8 'ships.

Take into account Norwell, and the verbals from the DE and the 3 LB's, seems like you would only have 3 left to give, so Tressel would have to very selective on who he offers and extends those last 3 to.

If you have 3 left, you likely would only take one more OL.

Considering the effort Dantonio is putting into Ohio this year, it's a good year to go up against you guys when your offers are limited.

Unfortunately, ours are too, I think we are going to be around 17-18, but we have more holes to fill, and at this point it's all about getting the best player available.

We took 4 last year but only 3 in '08 and 1 in '07.

I was going by your position/scholarship chart posted here and where the depth is positioned now. Based on 12 'ships tied into OL over the last 3 classes, it doesn't change the fact you are limited on numbers for '10.

With needs at S and DT, and a need to take a QB, as well as regular grabs of RB and CB in each class, plus having 5 verbals already, your numbers get tight, if my assumption you only have 16 'ships total for '10 is correct.

You chart I referenced says you only have 15 spots, I'll stick with 16 since one spot is bound to open up.

It's going to be interesting how Tressel handles this and what positions he decides to address over others when accepting verbals.

To me, there are three things that could happen that result in Donnal getting an offer:
  • He proves that he deserves an offer as much as the other OL already offered do.
  • The staff feels less confident that enough of the other OL offers will come aboard to meet the minimum OL they want in this class. (Other offers can be found http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/football-recruiting/609594-scholarship-offers-2010-a.html)
  • The staff fills needs in other positions and feel less confident with others still on the board leading to Donnal being the next best available, regardless of position.
Personally I think the second one is the most likely.

I would agree, I think that is the scenario that plays out.

If you grab some of the more highly touted OL being recruited, then the numbers come into play and he is a victim of numbers and has to look elsewhere.

Bottom line is we have room for at least 2 more OL in this class. If the coaches feel Donnal is tOSU-caliber, he'll get offered.

If Tressel was smart, you take two more OL, but if I could also see you only taking one more. You have more offers to give next season, and could load up then.

I believe the staff go for 3-4 more OL this year. That means a total of 4-5 OL in this class.

I say we take at least two more...we have been burned by not having numbers in the past and I don't think we'll do it again. Right now we have offers out to Koujando, James, Henderson, Benedict (committed), OL from Aquinas, and I think that's about it. I say at best we get one from that group but even if we do get one, I say it's between Donnal and Shoefner for the offer and it seems the staff might like Shoefner better. I personally like Donnal a tad more but I would like to see us get at least one of the in state guys. Next years in state OL class might not be as stellar, though it's a loaded year overall.
