'10 CA QB Nick Montana (Washington Signee; transfer to Tulane)

Then again, he has more dimes then most high school kids.

Totally, completely, utterly irrelevent. Ability to pay aside, he's still taking a long trip just to spend a day-and-a-half at most 2,000 miles from home to watch a glorified scrimmage.

And to go along with this, NM has already paid to come to Columbus once already. So I dont have any doubt that he is thoroughly "Wowed" and impressed!

LOL. It is a valid point (about the $$$) . I agree though that it isn't enough of one to trump your stance though.

If he's coming back for the Spring game, he'll get the "wow" factor. I've been going for years, and I still can't believe that many people show up just to watch a scrimmage.

Dude! Clearly because of the LAX game prior to!

(...and that's not a joke... coming from Chicago, getting LAX and the spring game is what gets me to town...)

:oh:

It is not irrelevant when I was replying to the comment "on his own dime". Any average college recruit could not afford to fly across country more than once. I was just saying money is not a factor for him to come to the spring game.

One factor would be that he was not able to talk with Coach Tressel when he was in Columbus last time. This would be a good opportunity to do so and to watch the spring game. Plus there would be other recruits at the game he could talk to and get a feel for what his future teammates might be like if he were to choose Ohio State.

Anyone think there's a little gamesmanship going on here by Tressel.

Maybe he was confident that he could get Nick to come to the spring game if he wasn't around for his first visit?

You know, lure him in so he can see all of the fanfare?

His post couldn't have been more relevant. Without financial constraints it's not nearly as big a commitment and therefore not a very strong indicator of his interest. And attending our spring game isn't exactly a burden. Well worth his time even if only to get more information.

Ahem, as I said, money is irrelevent...period. Capiche? I don't care how much, or how little, moola a prospect's father has, if there's not genuine interest then that father who has all that coin isn't going to throw it away for a one-and-a-half-day visit. Daddy Joe isn't an idiot. He'll send his son on unofficial visits cross-country only, that's only, if he feels there's sufficient interest in, and proper value to, his son.

Keep in mind that the visit, although being on the weekend, does take away from his son's high school studies, so Daddy Joe doesn't take this lightly and it must be at least fairly important. As for "gathering more information", most prospects don't come to the spring game for "gathering information", but rather they come to see that Ohio State brings more fans to a glorified open practice than 80% of colleges bring to a sold-out home game.

If a prospect who otherwise couldn't afford to come to the spring game, then they'd get an official visit (provided they were high enough caliber, and an official offer would suggest that).

So, my original comment that it must be important to the Montana's if Nick is coming out on his own/daddy's dime stands...and is correct.

I don't think anyone is saying it isn't "important". Just that when the cost of the visit is a drop in the bucket, it may not be as good a gauge of interest as it would be if the family in question was lower middle class.

What if Nick takes unofficial visits to ten different schools?

What if he doesnt......:)

Right, I get it. If he doesn't, then the visit was an indicator, but if he does, then maybe it wasn't. But to act like because a millionaire spending a thousand dollars on his son's future is proof of something seems far fetched to me. I could be wrong, but to act like it's out of the question that Montana could be just as interested in other schools because his dad spent a very small amount of money (relatively speaking) is, imo, not accurate.

The money thing isn't an issue for the Montana family, obviously. What is also obvious is the amount of attention that they are giving tOSU. That's what is relevant here. The mutual respect Papa Joe has for JT is also a big gold star.

Totally.

My point is that a very well-off family spending...what...less than a thousand dollars to help sort out what everyone says is "the biggest decision of the kids life so far"...is hardly evidence of anything but a father helping his son to make the best decision. I'm not claiming Nick isn't interested in tOSU a lot...just that his dad spending a thousand bucks to help him sort this out isn't a STRONG indicator either way...yet. Especially this early in the process. If this is the only unofficial visit...then yeah...but if this is one of five UNOFFICIALs paid for by the family...then this whole argument is moot.

I see exactly where your coming from and agree completely on the money issue. What has me so confident is that he has said he wants to make a decision within the next month or two and they're spending a lot of time on tOSU, much more than any other school. Many insiders expect him to pull the trigger for tOSU at the spring game. Hope that's true. That compounded with the fact that the staff seems to be going all out on him as far as '10 QB's go (hence, no offer to Gardner who many assumed would be their guy, despite Gardner's apparent interest in the Bucks), leads me to believe the staff feels very good about Nick coming on board.
