'09 FL DB Brandon McGee (Miami-FL Verbal)

If the other three kids commit.. and if we can get him up here a couple more times.. i would think we still have a solid shot.. but at this point I would put my money on an eventual commitment to Miami

He will not go to Miami...

Right now I think the thing is what do other schools have that we don't...Kinda like one of those situations last year with TP...No school had what we didn't and we were in it from the start...

McGee is probably the best athlete that we could possibly land in this class...Gonna be honest that he is more than just a cherry on top IMHO...

when I look at the whole that OSU will have (hopefully) already collected for the defensive backfield...well, it minimizes the importance of getting McGee IMO...as there will already be loads of quality DB prospects in this class (hopefully). Hence...cherry on top.

If the Bucks were rolling with 3 DBs this year and were putting a bunch of eggs in McGee's basket then he (or any other DB for that matter) would then be much more important. But the potential collective talent of this DB class as a whole...I don't know, I don't see how missing out on one very good and highly rated guy really damages things that much when there are potentially 4 top 100 DBs in the class without him and a few other really good ones as well....

edit...
guess I don't see McGee as being a clear step up above all the guys the Bucks (hopefully) will have committed....just another good one added to the mix. If one has McGee rated considerably higher than a guy like Barnett or Brown or Green or Wood...then they certainly won't agree with my assessment and visual aides...

McGee is a star.. clear cut Top 10 talent in the state of Florida IMO.. his idol was Chris Gamble, and I think he'd have a similar impact up here.. I look at our remaining targets (including Marcus Hall and all the WRs).. and McGee would be #2 on my wish list behind only Jheranie Boyd..

He's that good, and would have a huge impact here..

As for Miami, CB40.. what we are hearing (positive info) from our insiders (like HotMic) is the same stuff the Miami fans are hearing from theirs..

So you just dont know who is getting the clear info at this point.. Miami folks feel very good about their chances.. I cant rule them out and cant believe Brandon would have them ruled out this early in the process

Yeah I am not saying we are going to be screwed or anything if we don't get him...BUt IMO adding a guy like McGee adds another scoop of ice cream and nuts to the sundae...We aren't just adding another good player...We are adding a game changer...

I have Barnett up there as a game changer as well, as well as Wood in terms of Db's, but what I said was best overall athlete...In terms of athleticism, hip turn, ball in hands, etc...Just fluid...

I have Berry up there as well in terms of athlete, and Berry is higher on the wish list due to position, but McGee and him are guys that pose mismatches against other teams or shut down other teams strengths due to their abilities...Some other guys are strong players...

Kinda like think about 3 starters or 2 starters and an all-big ten player...That is kinda how I am looking at it...

I know I am struggling to get the thoughts across real clear, but hope this helps in terms of where I stand on this one...

The no to Miami, is coming from as close to the situation as possible...Gets no closer...

This is OSU's DB class of Jamie Wood, CJ Barnett, Dominic Clarke and, say, 3 of Corey Brown, Justin Green (offense??), Bradley McDougald and Vlad Emilien.......

This is that same DB class with Brandon McGee added...

Both are good...cherry on top is a little better but you probably won't notice it if your brownie sundae doesn't have one

....just my $.02
Along with the cherry, you also get the upgrade from one plastic spoon to four silver ones

...and chocolate jimmies.

Any other year the odds would say that we easily could lose out on McGee, finishing as a strong brides-maid as we have so many times in the past. However, bringing in the 2 Krop guys last year broke the ice. I still think the trump card in this scenario will be Vlad and Berry coming on board. Once they committ, you can bet they will be in his ear to join them in Columbus. The stars could be aligned about as well as possible to get a gifted recruit like McGee this year. If he goes elsewhere it will be because he liked the other situation better, IMO.

First off, I agree with Mont...the tune will be even more positive once we land Berry, Carter, Emilien, and Hyde. I think we are in the lead and that we'll have to mess up to miss out on him. I don't think McGee is better than Wood or Barnett, but he is near the top of my wish list in the speed category, only behind DeBose and Boyd (almost no chance anyways). McGee is a legit two way star and with amazing athleticism. No slight at all to Green, Brown, or the other targets, but Brandon is just a bit above them imo. I think the overall athleticism and playmaking ability seperates McGee. Anywho, still a long way to go but filling up most of our class by the beginning of the season will help us concentrate on McGee and a select group of others, like Corey Adams.

I think Brandon waiting until late to commit (hopefully in January or February) could end up really working in our favor. I think one of his biggest concerns is getting early playing time and if we have some guys leave early, it could leave a very attractive situation for him.

Jenkins is obviously finished after this year (as is Shaun Lane). I think there is a good chance that Donald Washington will leave also as he has the physical skills to be a first day pick and seems to be very close to guys who are leaving like O'Neal, Jenkins, Patterson, etc. Add in the possibility that Clifford may transfer..

We could be looking at replacing both starters and while guys like Amos, Howard, Scott, Chekwa, etc. are no chumps, I don't think they will (or should) scare a guy as talented as McGee.

You would think the opportunities that our depth chart will avail all of the DB recruits , would have, and will continue to be pointed out to McGee. If he is as good as advertised, he should have every opportunity to see the field on defense his first year, and be a starter his sophomore year. Lack of playing time shouldn't be a negative factor in his decision. Off topic, but it will be interesting to see if that same open depth chart can get us in the game with S. Gilmore at next weeks camp.

Which is why I never understood the reasons for the Givens de-commitment. But if it helps bring in McGee, I'd say that one worked out in our favor.

I will always look at the Givens decommit in comparison to the career of Clarke. I think he can reasonably be viewed as Given's "replacement" in this class. With them both coming from the same state and going to two rival teams, it will be interesting to track their development and see who ends up the best player.

So, with the commitment of Justin Green today, and with the prior commitment of Dominic Clarke and CJ Barnett, is this going to affect Brandon McGee's decision? I'd LOVE for McGee to be a part of this class, but that makes three potential CBs already.

Thanks,

Sideshow
