'08 PA LB Shayne Hale (Pitt signee)

I still feel really confident about Hale. I think the fact that we've been there since the beginning will help us a lot. I also think that when Hale sits down and thinks about what situation would be best for him, he'll pick Ohio State. I just get the feeling he'll be a Buckeye in the end through all this drama.

Gateway LB Hale destined to hit

Gateway senior linebacker Shayne Hale was 7 years old when he had the revelation.
Hale was watching a Steelers game with his father and made a bold statement for a kid who had never played organized football.

"I told him one day I want be out there, and he said, 'Your time will come. Do your best and it can happen,' " Hale said.

Ten years later, Hale finds himself rated as the No. 1 linebacker in the country, according to rivals.com, with more than 50 scholarship offers and inching closer to his dream.

The 6-foot-3, 235-pound Hale, who bench presses 380 pounds and squats 460, could quite easily walk into an NFL locker room today and the pros probably wouldn't look twice, thanks to his physique and maturity. First, though, after narrowing his list to Michigan, Ohio State, Virginia and West Virginia, Hale has to choose a college.

"Shayne is the enforcer," Smith said. "He is the intimidator. He walks in and everyone gets quiet to see what kind of mood he's in. He doesn't speak a lot. When he does speak, everyone pays attention. And he's so big that you better pay attention. I have never seen a high school kid that was built like him."

This kid could play right away

With the losses of Dublin and Williams the future of DE`s at tOSU could use a stud like Shane Hale. He could push for playing time as a true freshman. We could be really thin at DE in a few years and early playing time could come in a hurry. This guy might be our next Will Smith or Vernon Gholston is a few years. Hope we land him. He may be our only true DE in this class. Go Bucks

SHAYNE HALE -- GATEWAY FB-DE

Gateway's Shayne Hale doesn't look like your average 18-year-old.

"Sometimes we go to an under 21 club," said Gateway teammate Cameron Saddler. "He always gets carded because they don't believe he's under 21." The football field is the same for Hale. Often times, it's like he's a man among boys. Hale is a 6-foot-4, 235-pound senior at Gateway who can dominate opponents. He's a fullback on offense, but is known as a standout linebacker. He made the Post-Gazette Fabulous 22 as a junior, racking up 105 tackles, 58 solo and 13 tackles for losses. Rivals.com ranks him the No. 1 inside linebacker in the country and Super Prep the No. 2 linebacker overall. The funny thing is Hale won't play linebacker this year. He has been switched to defensive end. Gateway's coaches like the talents of linebacker Jim Wilson and also wanted to get him in the starting lineup. "This way, we get two of our best players on the field instead of one sitting behind the other," said Gateway coach Terry Smith. "We threw it out to Shayne in the summer months, and he was a little upset about it. But we sat him down and said this is what's best for the team. He said, 'Coach, if this is what's best for the team, then I'm for it.' "Defensive end is actually a nice fit for Shayne. It's probably where he'll play in college." Hale is being heavily recruited, but has narrowed his list to West Virginia, Michigan, Virginia and Ohio State. Hale and Saddler, a running back-defensive back, might go to the same school. -- By Mike White

He needs to commit to tOSU. Why would he even consider Va or WVa ?:osu:
If he likes playing linebacker, then UVA would strongly appeal to him. Al Groh loves having as many linebackers as he can get and his 3-4 defense lets the linebackers make all the plays. Groh can recruit him as an OLB and let him have the best of both worlds (LB and DE) so to speak. Question is, why would you look down your nose at schools like WVU and UVA?

UVA doesn't strongly appeal to anyone......:wink2:

Didn't do a single thing all game against Mooney.

Agreed. Hale was a complete non-factor. I think the announcer called his name on maybe 2 tackles. During warmups he certainly had all the looks of the #1 DE/LB in the country, but once the game started he disappeared, and it wasn't because Mooney was running away from him. I certainly expected more of a player ranked so high in one of the biggest games of his HS career.

I'm surprised after yesterday the thread title isn't "Shayne Hale is a Buckeye!" Man, I probably would have committed to the Bucks if I were a highly ranked player after that debacle. Nice to see we still have a chance
