'08 PA LB Shayne Hale (Pitt signee)

Blue Chip Chat: Shayne Hale
Catching up with the area's top high school football players
Wednesday, August 15, 2007

By Mike White, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

School: Gateway

Position: FB/DE

Height: 6-4

Weight: 235

The skinny: Hale is ranked one of the top linebackers in the country, but he has been switched to defensive end for this season. Gateway coach Terry Smith said the move is best for the team and also said defensive end is the position Hale likely will play in college. Hale is ranked among the top 25 players in the country by rivals.com and scout.com.

College talk: Hale was recruited by colleges across the country, but has narrowed his list to West Virginia, Michigan, Virginia and Ohio State. There is a chance Hale and teammate Cameron Saddler (RB-WR-DB) will attend the same school. Saddler's final four are West Virginia, Michigan, Virginia and Syracuse.

What do you think of the position switch? It isn't a big deal. At first, I wasn't real happy. But once I got the feel and started making plays in practice, I thought to myself, "This might be my spot." So it's not a big deal.

Favorite food? Steak.

What music do you listen to before games? I just turn on my iPod and let it run. I listen to everything from rap to R&B, everything.

What do you usually do after a game? Sometimes we go out to eat at Damon's. I usually just try to go out a little bit, chill with my friends and family, then go home and rest up.

People might be surprised to know ... I don't watch football that much at home on TV. I try to get out of the house, hang out with my friends.

If they are going to be a package deal.....then why not just say you have a top 3?

Interesting.......very interesting!!!

09 Brown and 09 Bell offers early for Gateway players. This has to send a message to Hale that we are not messing around. We have limited schollies this year and Cameron is not on our limited list but these guys are.

This has to be a selling point to Hale. WE NEED HIM AT DE! The Big Ten isn't known for speed at this postion but Hale could change all that.

He needs to commit to tOSU. Why would he even consider Va or WVa ?:osu:

Read back through the thread and you will see why he is considering those schools. WVU will be a major player for Hale and Saddler before it is all said and done. I still can't get a good read on the situation but as long as he keeps mentioning OSU as the fourth schools he may take an official to, I am okay with where we are...

I tend to be a little more pessimistic... Why can dates for the other three work out with football schedules but not tOSU? Why is he having a hard time making it here because of workouts, but he can make it to those places? My guess is because of who else's list those other 3 schools are on... I really think Cam is calling the shots here, and we are his "safety" school... JMO on the situation...

If we can get him on campus, who knows? If not, well.... Hope thing work out well for him.

Oh I agree... No doubt I'd love to see him here... I am just pessimistic since he has been able to fit UM, WVU, and UVA into his schedule, but can't seem to fit us in... Usually when lingo like that starts being thrown around it means that either a.) the recruit isn't as interested or b.) the staff has cooled on or is slow playing a recruit...

I look at it like this. Shayne Hale ia a great football player. However, if Hale isn't a Buckeye in the end it just wasn't meant to be. Yet, we still have Nathan Williams who seems to be a very similar player. Williams's dream was to be a Buckeye, he a little bigger at 6'5" 245 vs. 6'4" 240 and maybe a step slower with a 4.67 forty vs. a 4.6 forty. Both are of the hybrid DE/SLB variety. Of those who would know, how do they compare on film? If we miss out on Hale, there are still a few DEs on the board in Jack Crawford, Ben Jones and possibly Coples. Plus, Cam Heyward and Solomon Thomas getting RAVE reviews from practice. Obviously I would love Hale, but just tryng to put some things in perspective.
