'08 OH DB Dan McCarthy (Notre Dame signee)

If PSU is in his top five, he could very well commit there. With his friend and teammate Zordich commiting there, I can see both playing on D at PSU.

If not tOSU, I would much rather see him at ND then PSU. Man, two very good players choosing PSU over tOSU would hurt.
seems pretty unlikely at this point that he goes to PSU. I like McCarthy but I really don't think we need a safety in this class.

From what I've read and heard from people, PSU really is only there because of Zordich. I think Beachum is more likely to go to PSU than McCarthy is.

I think we take one safety this year. I think we'll end up with one of McCarthy, Woods, or Moore.

Sort of to continue the point, the three schools I keep hearing (which surprised me quite a bit) are Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Stanford. Apparently the visit to Stanford really stuck with him - so much so that I keep hearing about it even today, even from ND guys with "sources".

Each of those schools offers something slightly different:

ND - Family ties, academic prestige, history/tradition.
OSU - Local school, a proven winner, Jim Tressel.
Stanford - Wide open depth chart, elite academics, the "lets build something" pitch.

I very much thought it was ND vs. OSU, but even ND guys with "sources close to Dan" say Stanford may end up with the recruiting coup after all. Maybe one of you guys has a bead on this better than I do, but with the diversity of tidbits I hear, its a 3 horse race that is too close for me to call.

Palo Alto is a magnificent place and would turn the head of any young man -- especially one who grew up in Youngstown. But it's an awful long haul for Mom, Dad and friends to come see him play on Saturdays.

Blood is always thicker than water (even the beautiful water of San Francisco Bay). IMHO, in the end, Danny-boy will remain true to his DNA and play for the Irish.

I think our desire for a DB stems not from depth but rather from Tressel's love for defensive backs. He seems to love versatile DBs, ones that can play corner and safety, or safety and linebacker. Not to mention our use of defensive backs on special teams. Good sized defensive backs, even if they never see the field at DB, can still bring a lot to a team simply in terms of their ability to switch sides and their ability to play special teams.

Also with more and more teams implementing spread formations in their offensive packages.

i say McCarthy is great and would like to see him committ. I am gonna feel bad for all these kids that are holding out. They all know the situation. Snooze you lose.

I would only reserve 1 of the remaining schollies and we know who that will be.

as far as i can see it, history/tradition is even between nd and tOSU. there shouldn't be any arguement there. just b/c hollywood found a place for rudy doesn't mean that nd has the advantage over tOSU on the history/tradition category.
academic wise, i would definitely think that stanford has the clear cut advantage over both tOSU and nd. AT ANY RATE, it seems to me that nd only has the FAMILY TIE pitch to throw at mccarthy. maybe sometimes that's what all it takes..... i don't know... example: boren....

:osu2:

osu.edu ROCKS!!!

It's not "all it takes", but it's an enormous factor. He's an Irish Catholic kid, who's gone to parochial school all his life, whose big brother goes to Notre Dame on a football scholarship. That's some pretty powerful motivation for a 17 year-old.

There's no shame for tOSU if we "lose" Dan McCarthy to ND. And there wasn't any when we "lost" Zordich to Penn State or Boren to scUM last year.
