'08 OH DB Dan McCarthy (Notre Dame signee)

iIC... What is Dan's brother , Kyle's status at ND? Where is he on their depth chart and will he be competing at safety, cb or even wr?

In my opinion, he was just as good as Dan, maybe slighty better, because of his big play ability on D and special teams while at Mooney.

Also, was there some kind of rift going on with Weis and McCarthy's parents at one time last year?

I have not heard of a rift between the McCarthy family and Weis. I know I sound like a typical fan when I say this, but I tend to doubt there is validity to it. If so, why would Dan be considering the Irish so heavily? And on the off chance that something did happen - it is plausible I suppose - its obviously something that has been patched up, and/or wasn't so big a deal to begin with.

From everything I've read, Dan has more potential than his brother. Kyle's only two "national" offers were from Ohio State and Notre Dame. Any offers Dan gets are based on his own merit, because his brother hasn't made a name for himself in South Bend. Dan has offers from LSU, Oklahoma, and Stanford, not to mention the entire Big 10 is after him along with ND - and this is before his senior year started. Maybe as a high schooler Kyle was a better player, but to me its pretty apparent coaching staffs around the country think Dan has a better chance at making a splash at D1. Plus, we haven't seen Dan's senior year, so to be fair its a little early to say who was better while at Mooney.

As for Kyle, he's still an unknown quantity to many at South Bend. He's currently slated at safety - which is his probable home for the duration of his career - where he's only seen the field in mop up duty and on special teams. He played 83 minutes on special teams last year, and 1 minute with the defense. Right now, he's probably somewhere between 2nd and 3rd string. This will probably be his make or break year, and to be frank the odds of him making an impact aren't so good right now. Two other safeties brought in during the same class as him have seen real playing time - one is slated as the starting free safety (Ohio product David Bruton, for those interested), and the other got a spot start at strong safety last year when the regular went down with an injury.

Word has been spreading that in 7-10 days McCarthy will announce his decision.

On July 9, 10, Mooney will be holding their annual Camp of Champions, with some very big name college coaches. I find it interesting that Coach Tressel will be there. He will also stay over for Mooney's annual bocce outing, July 12, that I mentioned on a previous post.

What I'm getting at is that McCarthy' timetable for his announcement, should be right around the time JT is at Mooney.

Maybe I'm reaching, but you have to think about this.

Just to add a few more things. Tressel was the first to offer brother Kyle. The kid flew under the radar his senior season at Mooney after a sensational season. His performance in the 04 state title game turned a lot of heads.

ND followed and Kyle went there. Tressel was the first to offer Dan and everyone else followed.

My point is, the MaCarthy family is a classy bunch. In no way would they let their son show up Tressel at that time if Dan chooses ND. The brothers and parents have too much respect for him and appreciate the scholly offers he gave to both kids.

As an ND fan, I do hope you are reaching, but I'd do the same if I were in your shoes too. I was looking for reasons why Goebel and Sweat would end up Irish not too long ago myself, and neither will end up in South Bend.

When you say "very big name college coaches", who else does that include? Curious is all... 'cause if Jim Harbaugh, Charlie Weis, or Lloyd Carr were in attendance, you could also read into lines there as well.

And by the by, my ND guys have told me give it two weeks tops, so I think your time table checks out.

One correction above. Pelini is the D coord. at LSU.

IC... I'm sure you noticed the OSU, PSU, Stanford and LSU group. Also, Muransky was a Mooney grad and still has close ties with the UM program.

I know I am reaching IC, I'm sure your contacts have much more info then I, but I'm still hoping for a surprise.

Even if Dan does make the announcement at that time I don't think it would mean he is trying to "show up" the Buckeyes or Coach Tressel and luckily the Buckeyes have a head coach who is classy enough and secure enough that he isn't going to feel slighted because a HS student made a decision to attend a good University to which he has family ties.

I disagree, it would be bad timing and the McCarthy family would be attending the outimg.. Knowing them, that 7-10 day announcement will be later, like IC said, if he commits to ND it will be in two weeks or more.

Plus, there will be coaches from other schools there, who he is or has seriously considered. He would never intentionally try to show anyone up nor would he and his family want it to look that way. That's why the decision will come later.

Jay is QB coach; the offensive coordinator is Galen Hall.
