YOUNGSTOWN - Dan McCarthy knew right away something was wrong.
In the first half of last Friday?s Division IV regional semifinal against Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, McCarthy came up from his safety position to make a head-to-head tackle on an Irish ballcarrier.
?I was tackling him and my right side went numb,? said McCarthy, a Notre Dame recruit who found out earlier this week he would miss the rest of the football season due to a neck injury. ?I knew I had a problem but I was able to regain consciousness and the doctors examined me and I seemed all right.
?I told them I was fine to keep playing but deep down I knew something might be wrong. I just wanted to give it my all to see how far I could go with it.?

Mooney?s McCarthy helps from sideline

YOUNGSTOWN ? Dan McCarthy walked from the locker room to the field for pre-game warmups like he?d done 43 previous times with his Cardinal Mooney teammates.
But last Saturday, at Fawcett Stadium, was different for the Cardinal quarterback/safety. Instead of the shoulder pads and helmets, the senior wore a Mooney football jacket and jeans.
?This is the first time since I started playing football, in fifth grade, that I?ve missed a game because of injury,? said McCarthy, one of the front-runners for Ohio?s Mr. Football award.
McCarthy suffered a neck injury in a regional semifinal victory over Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary that will keep him out for the remainder of the season. He stood, watched, yelled and paced the sidelines ? much like a coach ? in the Cards? 35-20 win over Steubenville prior to the game.
Mooney star wins state Gatorade award:
Youngstown Cardinal Mooney standout Dan McCarthy was named the Gatorade Ohio Football Player of the Year on Friday.
The 6-2, 200-pound Notre Dame recruit played quarterback but excelled defensively, recording 84 tackles, three interceptions, two sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery for a unit that allowed just seven points per game.
McCarthy suffered a season-ending neck injury in the first round of the playoffs, but is expected to make a full recovery. The national winner will be announced in mid-December.

Cardinal Mooney quarterback Dan McCarthy underwent a successful neck surgery on Tuesday at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and expects to make a full recovery.
McCarthy, who ruptured vertebrate in his neck during the second round of the playoffs, will rehab for the next three or four months. He will redshirt next season at Notre Dame, he said.
?When I talked to my coaches, they felt, as does my family, that it?s it?s best for me to use that year to learn the system and get stronger.
?I?ll be ready to go the year after.?
