'08 OH DB Dan McCarthy (Notre Dame signee)

I BELIEVE HE will be a domer....too bad...good kid..quality...hate to see us continually get shutout of mooney like this though.....but safety isnt really a position of concern for osu but he would have been a nice addition

Particularly with the inordinate # of rumors and "insiders" that have come forth with their two cents over the last two weeks, nothing would surprise me - well, other than Penn State winning this one .

Seems to me that no fan base feels entirely confident heading into this one. Guess we'll find out tomorrow.

While having a brother at ND may be a plus, I don't always look at it that way. As the youngest in my family, I know it would have been nice to experience something first, not have people comparing everything I do to my older brothers, calling me my brothers' names, etc. By choosing OSU, it would allow him to be his own man.

All that said, I think he will go to ND.

My brother went to a different high school than the one I went to because he didn't want to be compared to me by teachers and what not. I can think of other examples from my life. Wouldn't surprise me at all if Dan felt the same way.

I'm still calling ND though.

I have argued all along that McCarthy will become a domer because:
He's Catholic; he's of Irish descent; he's gone to parochial school his whole life; and his big brother is already there. Powerful "blood-is-thicker-than-water" motivators to head to South Bend.

However... here are a couple of reasons for optimism:
He's an Ohioan and tOSU is his state school; JT is widely revered in his hometown of Youngstown; JT is a Christian on and off the field and runs tOSU program like a family -- the McCarthys apparently like that a lot; the last well-publicized OSU vs. ND match-up featured an intra-family storyline of sorts, with A.J. Hawk going up against Brady Quinn, his future brother-in-law, and tOSU won that one bigtime.

So, perhaps Danny will do the unexpected and go to his in-state school; play for a thinner, more modest and all-around better coach, and hope to match up with his big brother in a Bowl game somewhere down the line.

I still think ND is the logical prediction, because blood really is thicker than water, and Danny's blood is Irish. But hey, I'm just sayin' ...perhaps.

JT and staff did an excellent job with the recruitment of McCarthy, to the point that they have made him seriously think it over when it was long ago thought he was a ND 'lock'--but I will be really suprised if he does not end up at ND in the end.

I know he's catholic but is he really of Irish descent? I thought that surnames beginning with the prefix Mc- (like McGinest or McAllister) were Scottish in origin. I always heard O' for Irish and Mc for Scottish. I could be totally off, but Macbeth and Macduff and all that good stuff in Shakespeare and the McCloud clan in Highlander were all Scots. Maybe he's Scotch-Irish :)

As much as I've been positive concerning DM, a very credible source says a decision has been made and it will be ND, unfortunately.

I've never gone out on a limb on this. I am close to the Mooney program, but the deal is DONE.

I said back in May that I hoped either Zordich or DM would commit and we wouldn't go through this close second finish to another school with either player.

I know about the family stuff with both guys, but you don't want to finish second to anyone, and it's tough to take when you lose great in home talent.

As for the other Mooney seniors (Beachum, Hill) no offers were extended. This leads me to wonder if Simon will also opt elsewhere when his time comes. I hope he breaks the Mooney pattern and commits.

Z and DM would have been the start of a nice pipeline from Mooney to tOSU, but...
