07 Recruiting (CBF40's look at our prospects)

Figured it was time for an update after camp, and I finally found a little time to put this together.

QB's - There has been alot of talk about not taking one this season. IMO unless a stud comes alongs, I think that is a good idea. There are a couple guys on the board, that we may take a shot at if we have an extra spot available.

1. LaTravis Washington - could be a project type qb, with the ability to move to safety if need would arise. He has an offer, with Nebraska as his leader. You would have to think if we really really wanted him, we could steal him from the Cornhuskers, but I don't see us making a push.

2. Clay Belton - We all know about him, and I think the only way he sees an offer is if the staff is impressed with him during the season. I think he will be a good qb somewhere tho.

RB's - Right now it looks like we might want to take 2. There has been so much talk about Saine and not being a rb, but making the move to WR. I guess that is why JT recruits in categories (speed, big speed, power).

1. John Clay - I think he is a longshot and will end up at Wisky, but I would love to land him.

2. Danny "Boom" Herron - He went to tOSU and scUM camps and just blew up and earned offers at both. He comes from a great program and right now all signs are pointing to tOSU.

3. Robert Hughes - I think that there is mutual interest, but the staff wants to make a move and not sit around and wait. If he wants to come in and compete for a job, well then he could come here late in the process, but most signs are pointing to ND.

4. Morgan Williams - A lot of people love him and have him as the #1 pure tailback in the state. Problem is grades. Lets just hope he can bring them up and get in somewhere. Maybe a MSU, Illinois, or a place like that.

WR's/DB's/S - I think we are looking for guys that fit in the speed category, but sometimes there are guys that you know are slated to be a WR or DB. IMO we will take about 7 or 8 guys that could play WR/DB/S. We already have three in Oliver, Evege and Saine.

1. Eugene Clifford - He is still fighting for the best player in the state with Martin. He isnt getting a whole lot of love nationally from some places. I think he is a five star talent. I think he will play WR or S. I honestly would love to see waht he could do at WR. Most reports right now have him leaning to tOSU in a big way. I look for this one to be over sometime in December.

2. Devon Torrence - He is just another phenomenel athlete from the state. I think the staff was just waiting on him to come to camp and show what he could do. Everyone knows that he is a big buckeye lean and now that he has the offer, it is just a matter of time. I just hope in a selfish way that he decides to come to school b4 deciding on nfl/mlb. He would be a great addition to the football and baseball teams here.

3. James Scott - I love this kid. I have love him ever since I saw his video. He plays way bigger than he looks. There has been some talk that we may be leading and he came up from florida to see the coaches and check out camp. This one should be interesting to keep an eye on.

4. Leonard Hankerson - IMO he is the best pure receiver, on this list. I really like his game. There has been talk about him liking us and I hope there is mutual interest. It helps having a strong buckeye presence on the staff, and he will be up for a visit during the season.

5. Joe Haden - I really like Haden. I would love to find a way to get him in this class. He could play either WR/DB. He had a great sparq time at one of the rivals camps. There has been talk that he is warming up to us. I think it will come down to us and Florida. Might also be great to put us in the drivers seat for his brother who would be a great addition to the 08' class.

6. Dane Sanzenbacher - Another guy that is just a matter of time. He went to camp blew up and received his offer. His listed 40 time might scare people, but everyone that has saw him play says he is faster than what is listed.

7. Aaron Johnson - From most reports there is a ton of mutual interest. I for some reason have just not turned the corner on this one yet, maybe from the fact that I think there are better guys on the board.

8. JR Hemmingway - I also like him as a receiver and some say we are in the game, but I just don't see, I think he either ends up at scUM or somewhere in the South.

9. Art Evans - He is another guy I like, that the staff really sniffed out in florida. I think he will get some nice offers and just don't see him coming North.

10. Taruian Washington - From most reports he really struggled at the scUM camp, and there really hasnt been a lot of reports from tOSU camp. Dane S. got an offer b4 him, so we shall see. I think at this point, he is on the backburner, but if he would get an offer, I think he would accept.

OL - I think we will take 3 for sure and an outside chance at 4 if some of the right guys come through. There is no reason to worry here tho, b/c we lead for some studs in the 08 class, so the staff wont be fretting if they can only get 3 and lose out on a couple guys.

1. Nick Claytor - I think he is number one on the board just b/c of our need for T's. He looked very athletic at camp. Right now all reports are pointing to him coming here. I think it is just a matter of him leaving his mom in the South, but he has family here.

2. Anthony Davis - Honestly I wasnt greatly impressed with his film, but I think he has all the tools to be a great lineman and with the right coaching he could be the best in this class when all is said and done. He is from the same high school as Malcolm Jenkins so we should have some pull there. I think it will be hard to overcome Miami or USC tho.

3. Kris O'Dowd - Just got bad news that he broke something in his wrist at the USC camp. He was suppossed to visit in July sometime, so we will see if Kris is able to do that. I think that kris is going to make a fantastic guard in college and hope that we could land him. A visit here and a meeting with coach T could go along way in helping us get him.

4. Evan Blankenship - He has been to camp last year and this year and has impressed both years. The staff really likes him, and from most reports it is just a matter of time. Probably sometime in August.

5. Nick Schepis - I have voiced my opinion about him and if he had better size that he would have an offer. I really like him, just don't think we are going to have room unless some guys fall through.

DT/DE - I think we could take up to 5. I dont really think that we need 2 DE but if the rights ones come along we will take them, and I would love to put together a class of 3 DT's.

1. Ben Martin - His last update said he was tiring of the recruiting process. I like the fact that ND has already brought in one DE and lead for Tez Wilson. I have always like our chances, just b/c we have JT in our corner. He is clearly a 5 star talent and 1/2 DE in the country.

2. Joe Barksdale - He is another 5 star talent and from all reports at this time he will be coming our way. He would be a great get after losing the 3 we lose. It will also be fun to watch him play alongside Gholston.

3. Solomon Thomas - Even with the offer out to Martin and not a huge need for DE, the staff offered Thomas after he impressed at camp. I have like Thomas all along and thought that he was worth an offer, but wasnt sure if it would come. There have been some conflicting reports, but eventually I think he will become a buck.

4. Josh Brent - He received an offer about a month ago. The staff made a favorable update on him at camp. Not sure if it will be enough to overcome scUM tho. I would really like to land him tho.

5. Anotonio Jeremiah - He is another great athlete that could end up at DT. I think at times he can play too high, but that his correctable. He is a very good high school wrestler and has great size. With him it is just a matter of getting his academics in line and then he should get an offer IMO.

6. Devon Still - He is a guy that will probably outgrow DE and become a DT. Not sure on our chances, but he has an offer.

7. Derrick Morgan - Same can be said about him as Still above, but he grew up watching the Bucks.

LB's - I think we take 1/2 after last years great class of 5 studs.

1. Brandon Lindsey - He has an offer and from all reports really likes us. He looked very athletic on film and is one to keep an eye on.

2. CJ Peake - I know he is set on playing safety and he very well could get an offer and start off there, but his future his at LB IMO. His coach even told me that in person. I think if he receives an offer he will accept. There has been quite a bit of time since the first camp he worked out at. But he was back in town for the second camp. I just hope that he gets that offer, b/c I really like him.

3. Jermale Hines - He is another guy that is an athletic lb built in the mold of Peake. I think he is another one that is a matter of academics and then he should see an offer. He is also from Glenville, so if he gets an offer we all know the drill.

4. Andrew Dailey - Right now I don't think he is high enough on the board to get an offer. I think with a good season he could tho. I like Dailey and he is a very hard nosed player. If us or ND offer he will go to one of those schools if not look for him to end up and PSU.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So after all that it is time for a best guess again:

1. RB - Danny "Boom" Herron
2. RB/WR - Brandon Saine
3. WR - Hankerson/Scott/Haden- I think we get one of these guys
4. DB - Devon Torrence
5. WR - Dane Sazenbacher
6. WR/S - Eugene Clifford
7. DB - Donnie Evege
8. S - Nate Oliver
9. OL - Kris O'Dowd
10. OL - Evan Blankenship
11. OL - Nick Claytor
12. DE - Ben Martin
13. DE - Solomon Thomas
14. DT - Joe Barksdale
15. DT - Antonio Jeremiah
16. LB - Branden Lindsey
17. LB - CJ Peake
18. ???? - Sleeper, or maybe a two of the guys Haden/Hankerson/Scott or maybe a guy like Brent or Hines. Another guy would be Aaron Johnson.

Brandon Lindsey is really under the radar if you ask me. Im coming out with a top-100, and after watching his film he really impressed me. Im not sure if hes a top-100 player in the country, but his film speaks for itself. We are also probably in his top-2 with Pitt.

I really hope CJ Peake gets an offer. Not often do you have a guy in your own backyard wanting to be a Buckeye that bad...Oh yeah, and he has the speed and hips to play corner and the size to play linebacker.

Haden would be a HUGE get...(same thing with Hankerson)

bit of a stretch IMO, after seeing him at the sr. camp. He is a S/LB hybrid. I would love to see him get an offer tho... great athlete at what is quickly becoming a major talent factory at trotwood.

You would know more than me about him, because I didnt see him at camp, but recall Chris Pool saying he could play corner at the next level. (Come to think of it, Pool also completely whiffed on Barksdale's ranking...)

I agree about Lindsey, I really think the staff found somewhat of a diamond in the rough and I think how hard they follow up on him will tell the story of thier feelings on how they feel about other guys they are after.

I agree about Peake, and I think you meant speed and hips to play safety, not corner.:wink2:

Agree about Haden and Hankerson. Those would be two huge OOS state speed guys to add to our class.

Even if he could play corner (which I don't see), I doubt he would see the field ahead of the caliber of corner Tressel has been bringing on board. He such a natural athlete, I'd love to see how he looks by year 3-4 in the OSU S&C program.

Lindsey's school has been kind to Pitt in the past, so I think they should probably be considered the leader, but if he wants to play some big-time football, he knows where to go.

At the beginning of the recruiting process Peake was adamant that he wanted to play safety, not linebacker. Could that be why the staff hasnt offered?

EDIT: Spelling

Could be, but I believe that if he wants to be a buckeye bad enough he will listen to what the staff has to tell him.

There has to be a hold-up. I have a hard time believing he isnt an OSU level recruit...

Give me him and Hines, and I call that a perfect linebacker class. They both have great physical tools but are undersized. However we have so much young linebacker talent on this team, that they can spend 3 years in the weightroom before they have to see the field.

Exactally, but I wouldnt really call Peake undersized. I think he could easily be weighing 230 by the time his freshmen year.
