'07 OH DE Ben Martin (Tennessee signee)

I fail to see how a 16 year old HS junior can be tabbed a 3 year and off to the NFL player, at this stage...

Can we let him get on campus first before coming to this conclusion?

Watch his films. If you know what you are looking at, you will see the potential...some kids just have that kind of ability that says NFL. This is a special player. Feel free to let him get to campus before you draw a conclusion but I have seen enough to know something special when I see it.

His videos are pretty much some of the best defensive end clips i've ever seen.

He runs on his team's track team as a sprinter. He's 6'6, 230ish (will obviously get bigger) and is pretty much impossible to block. He plays against the best competition in Ohio, and absolutely destroys everyone.

The only person close to his ranking as an Ohio player would be Clifford.

I would almost venture to think that he's better than Rob Rose is at this point.

You're right. He DOES sound like a JT recruit

I think that quote by the coach tells ya more about the feelings of the coach than it does the player. I like that the coach recognizes the type of recruits that JT pulls in and recognizes that Ben Martin is that type of player off the field. It's always a great thing to have the head coach of a prized recruit on your side!

PS- I've heard pretty consistently that Ben Martin was the best DL in Ohio last year regardless of class, which would have included Rob Rose. If we do end up landing him, the thoughts of having Ben with Rose, Lawrence Wilson, and Doug Worthington (if he doesn't change positions) boggles my mind. We could be set for a few years with that fearsome foursome!

Serious? NJ has a hoops tourney called the ABCD... 5 years ago, ESPN was there and asked Rick Pitino who the best player was and what college would he be attending.. Pitino said "the best player on earth that is not in the NBA is here and only 16 years old" .. NCAA rules prohibited him from saying the name of anyone that was not a senior... you might have heard of the kid.. some call him LeBron

I know what your trying to say, but basketball is a contact sport, football is a collision sport. Its easier to step in and dominate basketball than it is to step in and dominate football.

With that being said, Ben Martins film is amazing.

Is there any doubt if at 16 years old LeBron decided to make football (which he was playing) his primary... that everyone in Akron Ohio didn't know he'd be in the NFL this fall?

It is encouraging, but doesn't need to be read into too much...Martin is the player I want the most in 07, but I also think his recruitment will be a long one. He will be a three year college player and other schools can and will offer a quicker path to the NFL than tOSU can promise.

WOW!! I'm certainly not bashing Martin's ability as I've seen firsthand on numerous occasions the type of player he is, but talk about declaring a kid the next big thing before he even steps foot on campus (regardless of whether it's in Columbus or at another school). I'm sure I'll get dinged for this and most likely this post will be deleted, but don't you think it's a little irresponsible to talk about a high school senior as being pretty much a "sure thing" to be playing in the NFL in 3 years? For every hit there's 5 misses, and so many things can and do happen. Saying with a degree of certainty that a kid will be in the NFL based solely on a couple videos seems ignorant to me, especially from someone like yourself who has undoubtedly seen numerous "can't misses" fail to develop at the next level and unheralded 3*s turn into the top NFL prospects. Go ahead and delete this or do with it as you please, I just think people should take it easy with some of the superlatives.

If Ben Martin isn't in the NFL in 5 years, I'd be completly and utterly shocked! Granted I haven't seen as much HS football as a lot of you, but he is EASILY the best HS player I've ever seen. Absolutely unblockable at the HS level, and as he gets bigger (and faster, if thats possible), he won't be stopped in college, either. Supposedly a great kid off the feild, too, with good grades.

Injuries are the only thing that could stop him from being a future pro-bowler...

Nobody said he would dominate...just that he has NFL potential that is obvious right now.

As for my previous post, I posted before reading this page and obviously missed the fact that someone already made the argument I made, so I apologize for that.

As for this post, there's a difference between recognizing potential and declaring that someone will do something. "He looks like the type of player that could play in the NFL someday" is a lot different than saying "He's leaving college after 3 years for the NFL."

And I'd be willing to bet many coaches would have said the same thing about the guy a year or two older than LeBron who was ranked #1 in his class and considering a "can't miss." Of course, he completely fell off the radar and no one knows what he's up to these days. I want to say his last name was Cook, but I can't remember exactly...I just remember ESPN doing a special on him a couple years after the fact.

Certainly, we can see that players appear to have the potential to accomplish great things, but obviously this doesn't always pan out. Kwame Brown and others are drafted at the top of the NBA draft each year because they have the potential to be all stars. Yet players fail to live up to their potential every year. To say that Ben Martin has the potential to play in the NFL is entirely reasonable, to say he will be in the NFL in 3 years (and to go so far as to say an injury is the only thing that will stop him from becoming a pro bowler, as one poster said) is foolish.
