'07 OH DE Ben Martin (Tennessee signee)

To say that Ben Martin has the potential to play in the NFL is entirely reasonable, to say he will be in the NFL in 3 years (and to go so far as to say an injury is the only thing that will stop him from becoming a pro bowler, as one poster said) is foolish.

It may be foolish, but I bet I'm right!

When it comes to busts, more often than not, it's guys who:

A: Get injured
B: Flunk Out/Get in trouble
C: Were just overrated HS players

Is it a sure thing that he plays in the NFL ( or plays in the pro-bowl, as I "foolishly" predicted)? Of course not. But if he doesn't play in NFL after leaving OSU, injuries will have been the culprit. He is just one of those guys who has "it", as they say.

Well there is no debating how good he is. He is an absolute stud and to pair him up with Rob Rose, Wilson, Worthington, Williams, Dublin or whoever would make for one heckuva a DE tandem.

From his film I agree with Grad that he is a 3 and done type talent, don't know a whole lot about him, so I dont' know if he would bolt after just 3 years.

It has been mentioned about depth at times in this thread, but this is a type of kid that doesnt have to worry about depth wherever he goes b/c he is that kid. Not a knock on the kids we hae recruited, but Ben is an absolute stud.

He is a guy that will have Teddy Ginn, OPace, Big Kat, MoC type impact in his freshmen year.

just that he has NFL potential that is obvious right now.

If anyone disagrees with Grad's statement, well you haven't seen Martin's film or have no clue how to evaluate film in general. There is absolutely no doubt that barring injury, Martin has the potential to play in the NFL. His size and speed combination is god given.

WOW!! I'm certainly not bashing Martin's ability as I've seen firsthand on numerous occasions the type of player he is, but talk about declaring a kid the next big thing before he even steps foot on campus (regardless of whether it's in Columbus or at another school). I'm sure I'll get dinged for this and most likely this post will be deleted, but don't you think it's a little irresponsible to talk about a high school senior as being pretty much a "sure thing" to be playing in the NFL in 3 years? For every hit there's 5 misses, and so many things can and do happen. Saying with a degree of certainty that a kid will be in the NFL based solely on a couple videos seems ignorant to me, especially from someone like yourself who has undoubtedly seen numerous "can't misses" fail to develop at the next level and unheralded 3*s turn into the top NFL prospects. Go ahead and delete this or do with it as you please, I just think people should take it easy with some of the superlatives.
No I do not find it irresponsible at all to declare that a kid has major potential that could land him in the NFL soon. Its called an opinion. Last time I checked, I do not receive a paycheck for any of this...it is 100% volunteer. I enjoy football, recruiting, and watching film. However, I do not consider my opinion to be above anyone else's opinion. If you find fault in my opinion, well...that is your opinion isn't it?

What I do find ignorant is your overreaction to this opinion and your presentation of such. What idiot does not realize that there are "can't misses" that miss? What sort of ignorant fool does not realize that potential does not always equal success? Next time, just for you, I will attach a disclaimer that the possibilities for failure are endless...my fault I assumed you were intelligent enough to realize all of this and assume it as a given.

I will say it one more time in my ignorant fashion, Ben Martin has HUGE potential and is the best prospect I have seen on film in years.

Rivals $

2/27

More video of Ben in action.

My Take: Absolute monster. Ben's lateral movement, explosive acceleration, and usage of leverage is excellent. His frame is obvious in these clips...long arms reminiscent of Alonzo Spellman.

It is encouraging, but doesn't need to be read into too much...Martin is the player I want the most in 07, but I also think his recruitment will be a long one. He will be a three year college player and other schools can and will offer a quicker path to the NFL than tOSU can promise.

I would like to think he'd have the very same opportunity at OSU to be "three-and-gone" as he does at others schools, if he's good enough. Tressel has a proven track record of letting his top-notch juniors leave early (Gamble, Holmes, Whitner). Add to that the fact that Will Smith starred at DE for OSU and is now excelling in the NFL, along with the huge amount of players we have drafted (the upcoming draft could be a huge help if we do get 4-5 player picked in the first round), and to me it's pretty obvious that OSU is as good as, and perhaps better than, any other program in the country to get him to the next level in three years. It's a widely-known fact that if you excel at OSU for three years, you'll be NFL-ready and will go very high in the draft, especially on defense.

not necessarily mili... I believe he's arguing that it will be harder for him to play immediately. The coaches have big expectations for Wilson, who will be coming into his junior season in 07. Rose will be a year older, and Worthington/Williams will be in their third year at OSU. It's not hard to imagine him coming off the bench his first year.

Grad is talking very STRONG stuff. If he is that good, he will see the field. As Grad said the path is going to look a lot less cluttered elsewhere.

Rose has a frame that could carry more weight and he would still look like a Greek statue. If anyone moves down to make room it's Rose. My ten year old could play linebacker behind those guys.

There have been comparisons of Martin to both Spellman and Will Smith. Who was the better DE?

Thus my qualifier "if he's good enough". You would think that a kid a good as he apparently is would not shy away from competition and would go to quite possibly the best school suited to prepping him for the NFL.

Absolutely, but my point is that JT is not going to promise him a starting spot as soon as he signs the LOI...other schools have already and more will follow.

Don't want to get too sidetracked, but ND just signed their first recruit of the year....a DE from NC. He's a no-namer at the moment, but talking to a ND fan about the process reminds me a lot of how Tressel recruits kids who don't have the stars, but you trust him anyways.

I agree 100% that JT promises nothing other than the fair opportunity to earn a spot. I'm just saying that we have a better chance at landing him than many may think, despite those promises made by other schools. I would like to think that the allure of playing DE at Ohio State with all our draft success will override any immediate-start "guarantees" by anyone else...

Martin would start over them.

He will play whereve he goes unless Julius Peppers, Will Smith are there.

Wilson is going to be a stud and Rose is unreal and I don't think he moves inside. However I think Worthington may and if he does that is one less spot to jump at DE. Just my opinion that I think he would redshirt if our DE's like Rose, Wilson, Williams, ect. pan out. However if one of the DE's doesn't produce, I think you would find Martin in the rotation quite a bit.
