I hope every Buckeye will join me and congratulate Derrell on his decision…..
AP – Youngstown Ohio standout Derrell Johnson, took his time making a decision. Almost 2 months after all of his teammates at Cardinal Mooney have signed their Letters of Intent; Derrell has waited until the last day to sign one too. It is with the University of Miami, Florida.
Asked about his selection, he stated, “I know this is a surprise to most of my friends. I have been talking to Coach Coker for a long time. He has been sending me text messages every single day and night for the last 3 months.” Johnson went on to say, “Coach Coker told me his job is on the line and he needs my help. He fired almost all of his coaching staff last year. He wants me to play QB or WR, maybe even some defense. The way I see it, it will be me and him picking the plays together on the sideline for the next few years.”
When asked about his official visit Johnson said, “I didn’t even tell my parents I was going down to Miami this week. I wanted to go alone to Miami and see the school, sunshine and girls. My host was Willie Williams. We went out and ate so much shrimp, my gut was gonna bust! Then he took me out to South Beach. The Alumni at the beach, all knew who I was, and kept shaking my hand. Man, we got so friendly with the girls; I hope there ain’t any pictures! Willie really knows how to party with the girls. The last day of the visit, Coach Coker and I sat down where I made some suggestions to their playbook.” “I love the flair in their uniforms, I think it will help me run faster too”, Johnson stated.
Asked about the other schools that he visited, Johnson went down the list. “Cincinnati was a great school. I hooked up with one of the Bearcat Basketball Cheerleaders when I was down there on my official visit. I thought we were tight, but she stopped calling me. So there goes Cincinnati.” “Syracuse was really good. My cousin went there and he made it to the NFL, the problem my cousin says, is that the Alumni don’t really take care of their players like they do in Miami. West Virginia has a winning program, but the Head Coach was a little too intense for me. I was worried he would give me a fat lip, punch me in the stomach or have me not qualify if I didn’t give him the right answer.” When asked about childhood favorite Ohio State, Johnson stated, “They were never really in it. I went down there a couple of times. I like to wear my shirt collar up. Coach Tressel doesn’t like when a player wears their hat backwards or their shirt collar up.”
Johnson, a late full qualifier is going to Disney World before he reports to summer camp in Miami, FL.
