'06 OH ATH Derrell Johnson (Iowa Signee)

I think given the fact that there are still options on the board for tOSU (Grant, McDaniel, Peters) that will play out by signing day, the staff may be taking a wait & see approach. IMO, if we still have a spot that the staff feels they would like to fill with an incoming freshman (we have kickers & walkons that Tress may want to ship) after tomorrow, there is still a chance for Derrell. I am pulling for him, wherever he ends up, as he sounds like he has work hard at turning his life around at a young age - certainly the path less travelled.

I have us with 2 ships left to give, but I count both Pretorius (the likely starter next year) and Pettrey (supposed to be a scholarship player as of this month) as scholarship players. If that's true, then I see us getting L.Grant and one more TBA... which apparently Tressel feels pretty confident about if he's not going to offer DJ based on numbers...

Pretorius is already on a full scholarship and has been since September 2005.

Not to beat a near dead horse but..
I'm curious, last recruiting year did we have any guys send in thier LOI after signing day? I'm thinking no?
But Tressel on the press conference said they arn't opposed to offering a WR later during this signing period.

Pretorius was said to be on scholarship by JT during the press conference. Said that they didn't do much kicker looking because they already have him on scholarship for 3 more years and Petrey for 4 years. My ears arn't great, but i'm fairly certain thats what he said. At the very least they are both on 'ships next year for sure.

Thanks. Well, that puts a whole new face on our available ships...counting Pret and Pet we have only two ships left instead of four.

I don't know for a fact, but I think that R.J. Coleman is still on scholarship despite not being able to play because of his injury. Anyone confirm or deny this?

That is true about Coleman. However, there is a provision for a medical waiver that allows OSU to give him the schollie and not have it count against the 85 max. That is what has happened with RJ.

Thanks, Oh8ch. I had been wondering about him ever since they announced his injury before the season. Darn shame.

Per a post on BN from HH, it is not grades...it is a numbers game...as in too many people and not enough 'ships to give.

BB

Well, JT just said today that he wishes he would have gotten 1 more WR in this class, so it can't be that they ran out of schollies.
He also said something which may turn out to have been about Derrell - that it's nice to have a couple of extra schollies just in case you get a kid in mid-'07 who wants to come in. i'm not sure what he meant by the time frame he gave, but it may be that they are hoping DJ will eventually qualify and still wants to wear S&G.

From the Cincy site...Derrell will be visiting Cincinnati on 2/24. He is still working hard to get his grades in order. He is still interested in OSU but may have to take an offer from the Bearcats should they extend one.
