“Almost everything that is great has been done by youth…” ~ Benjamin Disraeli

Ohio State began spring football practice on March 8th. Heading into the 2016 college football season, Ohio State will have 44 players on its roster designated as either a redshirt freshman (21 of the 25 players signed in February 2015), or a true freshman. For a roster that can have only 85 scholarship players, Ohio State will have around 52% of its roster with no playing time experience. As former Ohio State Head Coach John Cooper used to say, “If a dog is going to bite you, it will bite you as a pup.”.

For the next several weeks, I will be writing position group previews, leading up to the Ohio State Spring Football Game in Ohio Stadium on April 16th, 2016. These position groups will be ranked, from least to most concern, as I perceive them. It is entirely possible that my concerns, as well as the coaching staff’s concerns, will be reevaluated after the spring game.

2nd – Offensive Line

Players Lost – Taylor Decker, Jacoby Boren, Chase Farris. Boren was undersized for the offensive line, but as tough and tenacious as any offensive lineman Ohio State has ever seen. Decker was a three year starter at left tackle, and will be difficult to replace. Farris was a converted defensive lineman who played well at right offensive tackle in his last year of eligibility for the Buckeyes. Best of luck to all of these young men in their respective futures.

Returning Players/Incoming Players – Pat Elflein (Redshirt Senior), Billy Price (Redshirt Junior), Jamarco Jones (Junior), Isaiah Prince (Sophomore), Michael Jordan (Freshman), Branden Bowen (Redshirt Freshman), Matthew Burrell (Redshirt Freshman), Kevin Feder (Redshirt Freshman), Tyler Gerald (Freshman), Demetrius Knox (Redshirt Sophomore), Evan Lisle (Redshirt Junior), Grant Schmidt (Redshirt Freshman), Brady Taylor (Redshirt Sophomore), Kyle Trout (Redshirt Sophomore).

A few things to keep in mind as it relates to this position group…

· If Pat Elflein or Billy Price had entered the 2016 NFL Draft, this position group would rank as my number one concern heading into the 2016 season.

Urban Meyer paying close attention to OSU's o-line this spring: "We can't drop off. We're not going to drop off." https://t.co/WEZHUabwLd

— Austin Ward (@AWardESPN) April 5, 2016

Fortunately for Ohio State, Elflein is not only staying, but will move to center, allowing Ohio State to focus on the other three open spots that have emerged along the offensive line. Price has played predominantly left guard, but has experimented at the right guard spot this spring at times.

Just finished #OhioState OL/RB player/coach interviews. Billy Price said his spring move to right guard is just springtime experimentation.

— Bill Rabinowitz (@brdispatch) March 31, 2016

· Early enrollee Michael Jordan has emerged as a possibility at left guard. It is highly unusual for an offensive lineman to start as a freshman, but Jordan could win a spot. Jordan was running with the first team offense on April 2nd…

The Buckeyes had two true freshmen running with the ones on offense the entire time we watched practice: LG Michael Jordan, WR Austin Mack.

— Tony Gerdeman (@TonyGerdeman) April 2, 2016

· On the flip side of Jordan’s development, what does that say about all of the returning offensive linemen? Are these players behind?

Michael Jordan has impressed, but if a true freshman starts on Ohio State's 2016 offensive line, something's wrong https://t.co/SsBw2fraTh

— Doug Lesmerises (@DougLesmerises) March 31, 2016

· Perhaps it is just me, but I was surprised that Jamarco Jones was listed at left tackle, and Isaiah Prince was at right tackle. I would have guessed it would have wound up the opposite. JUCO signee Malcolm Pridgeon arrives this summer, and could force his way into the lineup at one of the tackle positions.

· Something to keep in mind is that this spring is not only important due to the loss of three starters, but this is the first spring with new offensive line coach Greg Studrawa. Developing a sense of chemistry with the players is important for the coaching staff also.

These questions, among others, have been on my mind, as Ohio State resumed spring practice on March 22nd.

This week for Making the List I feel a need to lean towards a Letterman in two sports. In football the conversation is of the mass exodus that transpired from last season and who will be the newest stars on our wondrous Buckeyes’ team. Also wrestling is done. There, too, was excitement to be proud of as a Buckeye….

This week’s choice lettered in both sports.

Harry Steel played for the Buckeyes on their football team in both 1922 and 1923 on both sides of the ball (This of course was the era of such feats). He, though, turned out to be a fantastic gem. He would find himself on the wrestling team as well.

Today we will speak of his wrestling accomplishments.

He led the Buckeyes in the 1923 and 1924 season to an undefeated year. The Buckeyes swept everyone they played that year which included Illinois and Toledo – both “powerhouses” in wrestling in the Midwest back in this specific era.

As a wrestler Harry Steel placed third at the AAU tournament in 1924 literally coming out of nowhere … as opposition would recite in the Columbus Dispatch “…where did this man come from?” – E.C. Gallagher of TTUN.

Later on, with special help from the United States’ top wrestler, Robin Reed, Steel was able to learn new skills. Using this newly acquired knowledge, Steel won the gold medal in the men’s heavyweight at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. This same year his successes as a wrestler continued at the Ohio State University as he would go on to capture the Big Ten Crown defeating a TTUN wrestler and reminding E.C. Gallagher just who he was.

What made Harry Steel special was his raw talent. He was not raised to be a dynamic football player. He certainly not brought up to be an Olympic Gold Medalist in wrestling either. I understand of the era to which I am speaking of. Things are different. But understand my point – today a child with a hint of talent in any specific sport is guided towards factories masqueraded as schools. This was not the case in the Twenties. I also am not naïve enough to bypass the unfairness of segregation which shortened the field of talented competition which sadly existed in this time frame. Harry Steel though stood up to the talent directed his way and won. That we cannot take away from him.

He also won a Gold Medal in the 1924 Olympics in Paris with almost “zero” experience.

And, allow me to be the one to “remind” you – he was the first Buckeye ever to win Gold in the Olympics.

Harry Steel deserves to be included in our list of Great Buckeyes that not only should we know and remember, but his accomplishments identify him as a clear source that produces the definition of precisely what a Great Buckeye is. I would be short-changing our readers here at tBBC if I did not include Harry Steel at some point in this list. I never want to do that. Harry Steel was a great Buckeye, as he passed back in October of 1971, and his memory of his greatness is well-overdue. I would love to think that I had some part in resurfacing his name and his greatness. But that would be naïve. Harry and his accomplishments are his – and history wondrously has a way of resurfacing what deserves to reclaim notice.

The Buckeyes throw their hat in the ring for a 2017 tight end from the Sunshine State

Ohio State has numerous young tight ends currently on the roster, but that didn't keep Urban Meyer and crew from dishing out a scholarship to one of the top rated soon-to-be senior prospects in the country. On Thursday afternoon, three-star recruit Tre' McKitty of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. announced the Buckeyes are the latest program to offer him a chance to attend their University.

"[Mark Pantoni] said he really likes me as a player and wants to get me up there ASAP," McKitty stated to Land-Grant Holy Land. "This offer is a huge one I've wanted for awhile. Ohio State is big time."

McKitty, the 16th rated tight end and 473rd overall prospect in the class of 2017, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, adds Ohio State to an already impressive list of scholarship offers.

Auburn, Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee and USC are just a few of the schools after the 6-foot-4, 235-pound standout.

While there is no question McKitty has the potential to be a steal for someone at tight end. Some college programs think his skill set could be perfect on the defensive side of the ball. Recently the Colorado coaching staff gave the Florida native a chance to join the Buffaloes as an outside linebacker.

Spence set to announce

This morning one of the top defensive line prospects of the 2017 class will shut his recruitment down, and verbally commit to a college program. Tre McKitty's IMG Academy teammate Cam Spence will make his college decision known to the public this morning at 8 a.m. EST.

Which on will it be tomorrow?? @HamiltonESPN @TomVH @BleacherReport @IMGAInsider pic.twitter.com/pgHWN6S1RC

— Cam Spence (@Only1CamSpence) April 7, 2016

Receiving over 20 scholarship offers during the process, Spence will choose between Ohio State, Maryland, Alabama, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, North Carolina, USC, Florida, and Ole Miss.

Once thought as potential pledge for the Buckeyes, Spence's recruitment has changed up a bit over the last few months. After a recent visit to College Park, Md., all signs point towards the 6-foot-5, 285-pound defensive tackle heading to Maryland and suiting up for the Terrapins.

2018 prospects visit OSU

Over the last couple of weeks the Buckeyes have played host to a number of high school recruits. Once again on Thursday, Ohio State had the chance to show some highly recruited prospects what the program is working with. Making the trip to Columbus to get more familiar with OSU was sophomore standouts Christian Tutt, and Casey Thompson.

Tutt, a four-star cornerback from Thomson, Ga., holds offers from not just Ohio State, but also from programs such as Alabama, Georgia, Auburn and Baylor.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Tutt might have a scholarship offer from the Buckeyes, but Thompson has yet to receive a chance to play at OSU. Thompson, a Moore, Okla. native and four-star signal caller, current holds offers from Power 5 programs such as Miami, Oklahoma State, Oregon State and Virginia Tech.

Quick Hits

  • Future Buckeye running back Todd Sibley will participate against many of the top 2017 recruits in the country in the Under Armour All-America game in January. The Akron Archbishop Hoban product follows in the footsteps of many former and current Ohio State standouts, including Braxton Miller, Joey Bosa, Vonn Bell, Dontre Wilson, and Raekwon McMillan.
  • After picking up scholarship offers from some of the top programs in the country, class of 2017 standout Baron Browning is down to 10 programs. Ohio State, Oklahoma, Michigan, Alabama, UCLA, USC, LSU, Notre Dame, TCU, and Texas will fight it out for the five-star linebacker from Kennedale, Texas.
  • Per Corey Evans of Hoop Seen, Ohio State is showing interest in 2018 three-star point guard Jordan McCabe. The Wisconsin native comes in at 5-foot-10, and holds offers from the likes of Missouri and West Virginia.

Indiana received some great news today when freshman standout Thomas Bryant announced he will return for his sophomore season and not declare for the NBA Draft. Many draft experts had Bryant pegged as a middle-to-late first round pick had he made the choice to leave early. His return should make the Hoosiers a popular pick in the Big Ten next year. “Being a part of IU basketball is special and I’m excited to continue my development as a person and as a basketball player under Coach Crean,” Bryant said. “The bond I have with my teammates and coaches is strong.

Will teams be willing to take a running back in the Top 10?

"Kiper has the Ravens taking Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott at No. 6 overall in his fourth mock draft, which represents a considerable curveball to what most experts are thinking."

- Jamison Hensley, ESPN

With three weeks until the NFL Draft, experts and analysts have a fluid idea of where players might land. For a Baltimore team that needs to add depth and talent to their defense, storied mock draft expert Mel Kiper is now predicting the Ravens add a weapon on offense instead.

There's been a lot of debate about how high a running back should be taken, and whether teams should take the best player available or the best one to fit their specific needs. Elliott is likely to be one of the highest drafted running backs in the past few years, but will he crack the top 10?

Should the Ravens have serious intentions on drafting Elliott at No. 6, they'll have to bet on the Cowboys not taking him two spots earlier. The coaching staff from Dallas has met with several Buckeyes this offseason, even coming to Columbus earlier this week for several prospect workouts -- including Zeke.

"I think he's a talented individual, he can do a lot of different things and we'll find a way to showcase his talent and ability. We all know he's gifted in a lot of different areas so we'll see what we can put together to give him a chance to have success."

- Hue Jackson via Josh Alper, NBC Sports

After a few seasons of bouncing from team to team, and rarely seeing time as a starter, quarterback Terrelle Pryor had a choice to make. He decided ahead of the 2015 season to switch from quarterback to wide receiver. The move immediately drew renewed interest from teams, eventually landing with the Cleveland Browns for - some of - the season.

Pryor was an unrestricted free agent heading into 2016, but the team decided to extend a qualifying offer, landing the now-receiver for at least one more season. The move came as little surprise knowing that the Browns new head coach Hue Jackson prefers tall wideouts and has a history with Pryor from their time with the Raiders.

With so many roster questions for the team, Jackson hasn't decided what position(s) he wants to see Pryor in to start the season. Will the team try and use him at quarterback? Might he take snaps from the wildcat - circa Braxton Miller in 2015? Or maybe they'll use him at multiple positions for the duration of the season?

"In the second set of winter Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings, Ohio State has climbed to second behind a second-place finish in fencing and a ninth-place finish in women's basketball."

- Ohio State Buckeyes

Second only to Stanford isn't such a bad place to be, especially when it's one spot ahead of rival Michigan. The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup is a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today with points awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 women's and 10 men's.

The points earned by the fencing and women's basketball team are in addition to a third-place wrestling finish and a seventh-place spot earned by the rifle team. The next Division I winter standings will be released April 14.

"The New England Patriots safety and special-teams ace scored a try in his return to rugby sevens at the Hong Kong 10s on Wednesday for the Samurai 7s."

- Doug Kyed, NESN

Nate Ebner was always an intriguing football player, even at Ohio State, where he joined the squad halfway through his college career. Football was always his No. 2, and he made that abundantly clear ahead of the 2016 season.

Just weeks after signing a new two-year deal with the Patriots, Ebner requested a leave of absence to pursue a chance to join the United States rugby Olympic team. In his younger years, he was lauded as a rugby player both here and internationally.

His love of the sport comes from his late-father, and he intends to honor him on his way to Rio to compete among the best in the world. He's already moving up the ranks in Team USA rugby sevens, joining the active roster against Hong Kong -- where he scored his first goal.

Ohio State is off to a historically strong start with their 2017 recruiting class. Where are they going to look next?

Ohio State recruiting well during the Urban Meyer era isn't breaking news. The Buckeyes have been mainstays near the top of the national recruiting lists every season, and even led the country for much of last year. But even compared to some excellent hauls, the 2017 class is shaping up to be a special one. Ohio State is currently number one with a bullet in the 2017 rankings, with 13 commitments adding up to a 250.26 ranking on the 247 Sports Composite board. For some perspective, Oklahoma, in second place, has a 200.21 record. Ohio State is crushing everybody right now.

With the exception of Blake Haubeil, who is a kicker, every single Ohio State commitment is a consensus four-star recruit. Two, Josh Meyers and Isaiah Pryor, are five-stars. Seven are listed in the top 100 prospects by 247. Any way you want to slice it, that news is good news.

Ohio State doesn't typically have quite as many commitments this early in a recruiting cycle. That leads to a few questions, as we head into the spring game, typically one of the bigger recruiting events of the offseason.

How big is this class going to be?

It seems like almost every year, we hem and haw about how this Ohio State recruiting class might be a little bit smaller, but then lo and behold, Ohio State still signs 25 kids. This year might honest to God be different, since the Buckeyes have a small senior class and few players who project to be locks to declare for the NFL Draft early. If the Buckeyes want to sign a big class again, it will require roster attrition, possibly significant attrition.

That will likely be a big storyline in the post spring game/practice world. Will players who find themselves lower on the depth chart seek transfers for more playing time? Will everybody stay academically eligible? Will anybody get kicked off the team over the summer for breaking team rules? I would not be surprised, for example, if anybody from Ohio State's crowded wideout room, or offensive line, decided to find another place to play before the season started.

My best guess at this point is that Ohio State takes around 20-21 kids in this class. Of course, we've been wrong before, but without a lot of players leaving the program, a full allotment feels a little unlikely.

Seeing that Ohio State's class then would already be more than half full, I'd be pretty surprised if there were many more commitments in the near future. I'd expect the Buckeyes to be careful and judicious in who they offer and who they accept, especially in the short term, so they can make sure they have enough room to fill their needs.

What position groups could be addressed still in this class?

A big one is wideout. The Buckeyes added multiple solid names in 2016, but with still a lot of uncertainty at that position, and given the quality of targets that have OSU interest in this class, look for Ohio State to restock at WR in a big way in 2017. The Buckeyes don't have any pure WRs committed yet, but they could take as many as three.

Trevon Grimes, from Ohio State pipeline St.Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, is a five-star, and rated the second best WR in the country for 2017. He's been considered a substantial Ohio State lean for months, and if/when he eventually gets back to campus, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him pull the trigger. Another five-star, Tyjon Lindsey, recently visited Ohio State, and Crystal Ball predictions have started to come in. The Bucks will need to battle USC for that commitment, but Lindsey would be an impressive addition as a slot receiver.

Closer to home, Ohio's highest rated uncommitted recruit, Jaylen Harris, is also considered a Buckeye lean. Harris, a 6-5, four-star from Cleveland, would provide another big target that can stretch the field for Ohio State's big-armed QBs.

Ohio State is monitoring other WRs too, like Michigan product Donovan Peoples-Jones, the top rated WR in the entire class, Jeff Thomas, a high four-star from East Saint Louis, and Danny Davis, a four-star from Springfield, Ohio. Davis is the only one on that list that does not currently have an Ohio State offer. The Buckeyes will have lots of quality targets to chose from, and that position group should get a nice talent infusion.

What about other positions?

Another position of note could be defensive tackle, perhaps the only position where Ohio State hasn't reeled in a ton of blue-chip recruits over the last few seasons. That should change in 2017. Ohio State already has verbals from Haskell Garrett, a high four-star from Las Vegas, and Jerron Cage, a four-star from Winton Woods. The Buckeyes are likely to take at least one more.

Perhaps the most likely candidate would be four-star Darnell Ewell, out of Norfolk, VA, a place where Ohio State has had some success recruiting these past few years. Jay Tufele, a four-star from Urban's old stomping grounds in Utah, is another possibility. Don't be surprised if the Bucks kick the tires on other names as well.

The Buckeyes are likely to also look for additional help in the secondary (perhaps their least deep position group right now), along with another running back, and potentially another QB. Offensive line is likely to be less of a priority, along with linebacker.

Wait, QB? I thought Ohio State already had a QB.

They do. Danny Clark, a four-star, pro-style quarterback out of Akron, has been committed to Ohio State for basically forever. It would be a huge surprise for his commitment to waiver, even if his star isn't perhaps quite as bright as it was maybe a year or two ago. It would also be a big surprise if Ohio State decided they didn't want him anymore.

But that doesn't mean Ohio State is done looking at QBs. They hosted Texas A&M commit Tate Martell recently, and he had nothing but good things to say about Ohio State. Martell is the top ranked dual-threat QB in the country (and a five-star). Ohio State may also look to host other dual-threat QBs in the next few months.

This doesn't necessarily mean they like Clark less. But if J.T. Barrett leaves early, Ohio State's QB room is Joey Burrow, Dwayne Haskins, Stephen Collier, and Danny Clark. While Burrow and Haskins certainly aren't statues, there isn't really a speedster in that group, and Meyer may simply want to augment his unit with somebody capable of giving them a different look.

I wouldn't say it is guaranteed that Ohio State takes another QB. But don't be surprised if they do.

How many Ohio kids are going to be in this class?

The Buckeyes currently have commitments from three of the top five ranked prospects in Ohio right now. Ohio State is favored with the two uncommitted prospects, Jaylen Harris, and defensive back Amir Riep, who has been offered by basically everybody in the country at this point. The Buckeyes currently have six Ohio commitments in total.

It's April, so a lot can and will change, obviously, but I would not be surprised if Ohio State takes Harris, Riep, and fills out the rest of the class with out of state prospects. There are plenty of other great players in Ohio this year, but the Buckeyes have not have the room, or the positional fit, to take all of the best ones. That's good news for Michigan State, Notre Dame, Kentucky, and others.

Our latest podcast explores whether this is worth getting #mad #online about.

We're between the end of basketball and the start of the Spring Game, but that doesn't mean the Ohio State news machine has hit too much of a lull. Lately, the internet has been abuzz about recent comments from Kentucky offensive lineman, and former Ohio State recruiting target Landon Young, who said that Urban Meyer disrespected him, then backtracked.

Was Ohio State wrong? Was Young? Is this something to be mad about? In our latest podcast, we break down the whole story.

We also discuss the exodus of talent from Ohio State basketball, what the roster might look like next season, how worried we should be...and also pro wrestling, #dadlife, and more. It's worth a listen.

You can find us on iTunes, thanks to our fancy iTunes page, or our fancy SB Nation podcast page. You can also subscribe via RSS on Android and Windows Phone devices. If you're listening on iTunes, writing us a nice review would certainly help other people find the show
