The Buckeyes are in Champaign for a weekend series with the Illini that holds serious implications for the Big Ten standings.

Ohio State has reached the most crucial juncture in its baseball season. Over the course of the next 20 days, the Buckeyes will play nine games against Big Ten opponents, six of which will come on the road, and a pair of midweek games against a team that currently holds a national top-25 ranking in Florida Atlantic. The success or failure of the season may well hinge on this stretch for the boys in scarlet and gray.

The team enters a road series against Illinois riding a three game winning streak, but at 4-5 in conference play, finds itself on the outside looking in at a berth in the Big Ten tournament in Omaha at the end of May. Despite having scored more runs and striking out more batters than any other Big Ten squad, and sporting the fourth-best overall winning percentage in the conference, Ohio State would be going home without a postseason for the first time in head coach Greg Beals' tenure if the season ended today.

The Illini are an identical 4-5 in the Big Ten, so this is a series with major conference tournament implications.

"It's an opportunity for us to one-up somebody in the standings," Beals said after Tuesday night's 9-0 win over Cincinnati. "We need to win that series on the road. We've been playing good baseball at home, and we need to take that on the road."

Last season's three-game sweep at the hands of Illinois in Columbus began a downward spiral for the Buckeyes that saw them lose 10 of 14 in the last month of the season and go from being in the conversation to host a regional to missing the NCAA tournament altogether.

With the exception of last Friday's uncharacteristically mediocre start by Tanner Tully, Ohio State's weekend rotation has been incredibly solid for the past month. The bullpen, which hit a rough patch against Maryland two weekends ago, has bounced back as well.

Offensively, the Buckeyes are simply overpowering their opponents, with the quartet of Jacob Bosiokovic, Nick Sergakis, Troy Montgomery, and Ronnie Dawson all in the top eight in the Big Ten in home runs. Beals' squad is outscoring opponents by an average of over two runs per game on the season.

Ohio State is fighting for its postseason life. While a rough weekend in Champaign wouldn't completely derail the season, a series win against the Illini would give the Buckeyes some breathing room. And a little revenge for the events of last year wouldn't be too bad, either.

Illinois Fighting Illini (18-16, 4-5 in Big Ten play)

Head coach Dan Hartleb guided Illinois to the most successful season in program history a year ago. The Illini set a program record with 50 wins, put together a 27-game winning streak, and advanced to super regionals for the first time. That success, though, also led to nine players being drafted last June and Hartleb looking at the challenge of reloading.
Where those departures have hit Illinois the hardest are at the plate. The Illini are in the bottom half of the conference in most offensive categories and have really struggled at times to score runs.

The leader of the team is undoubtedly senior catcher Jason Goldstein. A first-team All-Big Ten selection and a 17th round draft pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers a year ago, Goldstein leads the team with a .358 batting average, 38 hits, four home runs, 23 RBIs, a .519 slugging percentage, and a .435 on-base percentage. The Highland Park, Illinois native is an All-American candidate and will get plenty of attention from Ohio State's pitchers.

Also having a solid season is the double play combination of redshirt senior second baseman Michael Hurwitz and redshirt junior shortstop Adam Walton. Hurwitz, who didn't not play in 2015, is hitting .302 and has scored 23 runs.

Walton, who received a first-team All-Big Ten nod and was drafted in the 20th round by the Baltimore Orioles, has a .256 average and leads the team with eight doubles and 13 stolen bases from his leadoff spot.

The starting weekend rotation for Illinois has been solid if unspectacular in 2016, which is to be expected when all three members from 2015 had to be replaced. As a team, the Illini allow opponents to hit .260 and sport a collective 3.75 earned run average.

Junior Cody Sedlock is the brightest light among the team's staff, and one of the top prospects in the Big Ten for this June's draft. The 6-foot-4 right-hander is 4-1 in nine starts covering 56.2 innings, and leads the conference with 70 strikeouts. Sedlock holds the opposition to a .247 average and has a 3.5-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Doug Hayes, the redshirt sophomore lefty who will take the ball on Saturday, is 5-2 with a 3.25 ERA in 55.1 innings of work. Those five wins are tops on the team, but his 1.84-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio suggests that Hayes has struggled with his control.

On Sunday, freshman Cole Bellair will be on the mound. The right-hander is 1-2 with a 3.05 ERA in 11 appearances this season, six of which have been starts, with opponents hitting just .224 against him.

Getting to Illinois' starters will be in the Buckeyes' best interest, as the senior righty-lefty combination of Nick Blackburn and J.D. Nielsen have been very effective out of the bullpen, combining for 12 saves and a 4-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Reloading, not rebuilding, is probably the proper term for Silver Bullets.

This past Saturday Buckeyes Nation made history, becoming the first school crazy enough about football to pack six digits worth of fans into a stadium -- in April.

If we've learned one thing from spring games over the years it's to not overreact. Guess what? J.T. Barrett is going to have better games. As for that offensive line? The two best players (center Pat Elflein and guard Billy Price) were both out because, you know, it was the spring game.

With that said, we got to watch some football for the first time since January, and that means that there is film to be broken down. Was the game ugly? Yes, but there were also young playmakers everywhere, and fans should be very excited about the 2016 edition of the Silver Bullets.

Columbus, meet Jerome Baker

Jerome Baker, formerly the number one prospect in all of Ohio in the 2015 recruiting class, is apparently the product if Darron Lee and Odell Beckham Jr. were to somehow had a kid together. Ohio State's new SAM linebacker, Baker obviously faced doubts that he could replicate Lee's ability as a spread offense's worst nightmare. While it will take a lot to replicate the future first round picks play on the field, Baker appears to be doing just fine so far.

And get this: my favorite part of this play isn't even the interception! It's that OHIO STATE FINALLY STOPPED A THROWBACK PASS. It seems like every week a team dials up a tight end or full back delay, throwback pass, and it routinely roasts the Buckeyes. Apparently not this year, as Baker did a fantastic job of staying home and putting himself in a position to let his unreal athleticism take over.

Rashod Berry could be a name worth remembering

While Ohio State has a recent history of giving defense players numbers with no real rhyme or reason (Sam Hubbard is No. 6, Raekwon McMillan is No. 5), there's still just something about watching a defensive player with a lower number excel. Don't believe me? Watch this:

With the jersey tucked in behind his back plate and the No. 13, it's safe to say that Berry would be rocking the Zeke-crop jersey if the NCAA wasn't so lame. Looking past the atrocious block attempt by the left tackle for a second, Berry shows unnerving speed for a defensive end. At 6'4, 245 lbs Berry is built to be a nightmare off the edge, and as every football fan knows, every backup is always just one play away from being a starter. Plays like the above is very encouraging for an Ohio State defensive line that's losing three starters.

Denzel Ward can run and hit, and it is fun to watch

You might remember Denzel Ward, No. 12, as that really fast guy on the kickoff team from last year who made a few plays for himself. Now? You know him as the (allegedly) fastest Ohio State Buckeye, and a corner who isn't afraid to drop his shoulder and make a hit.

Yes, Weber had already taken contact and wasn't exactly in a position to put up much of a fight against Ward, but still: WOW.

Often when we think of words like "fast" and "corner", these are not the types of hits that come to mind. Seconds later, Ward came untouched off the edge and sacked Barrett. Can it be September already?

A techie question

Five years ago I put together a power point salute to those in my high school class who served. Did it on a Mac using Windows 2010. Trying to update for our 55th reunion and I discover that folks with older Windows can't open the pppts file. Is there a version out there I can convert the file to? Is there a way to save the file in an older format? Oh and Windows community page is out of commission as I write.

Thanks,

MotS&G 2016 Ohio State Spring Football Conclusions

2016 Ohio State Spring Football Conclusions
Chip Minnich

Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

“Almost everything that is great has been done by youth…” ~ Benjamin Disraeli

For the past couple months, beginning in February, every Friday at 8am EST has begun with this quote on this site. I have written about what I perceived concerns about various position groups, and it culminated in a glorious 2016 Ohio State Spring Game on April 16th in Ohio Stadium.

Ohio State Head Coach Urban Meyer must be pleased with one crucial area as it relates to spring football – the Buckeyes left the spring game with no injuries that could impact the 2016 season. Fifth-year senior running back Bri’onte Dunn did not play in the spring game with a sprained ankle, but will be back in the mix for the starting running back spot for fall camp.

Showing my age, I can vividly recall Ohio State spring game performances that were tremendous, yet did not translate into fall game production. It is important to keep things in proper perspective. With those caveats in mind, below are three distinct impressions that were made upon me as I sat in D Deck of Ohio Stadium…

1. The 2016 Ohio State Defensive Line Will Rotate Frequently ~ Yes, Ohio State was playing as many offensive and defensive linemen as possible in the spring game. It was challenging for either the Gray’s or Scarlet’s offensive lines to protect Joe Burrow or Stephen Collier whenever either was playing quarterback. With all of that on the table, the defensive linemen who have been waiting in the wings used the spring game as an opportunity to show what they could do if given the opportunity. For example, I don’t want to call him a sleeper, but Jashon Cornell, a moved defensive end to defensive tackle, seemed to emerge during the spring game.

On a somber note, Donovan Munger’s Ohio State career has come to an end, due to health concerns. Best of luck to Munger in all of his future endeavors, and many thanks for all of his contributions to Ohio State football…

Donovan Munger's football career at Ohio State over because of blood clots. Wrote about his battle with them in '14 https://t.co/TCEDgWZURN

— Doug Lesmerises (@DougLesmerises) April 20, 2016

For the first time since Coach Meyer came to Columbus in 2012, Ohio State has so many defensive linemen that will allow Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson to continually refresh players who will be able to harass the opposition’s quarterback. Think about this – Nick Bosa is not yet on campus, and Coach Meyer has stated Bosa will play in 2016.

2. Do Not Sweat J.T. Barrett’s 2016 Spring Game Performance ~ J.T. Barrett had an uneven day during the spring game, but there were several extenuating circumstances that impacted his performance. First of all, Barrett wore a black jersey that did not allow him to scramble or face contact. As stated up above, the offensive line was more of a ragtag collection, with projected starters Pat Elflein and Billy Price being withheld from competition. And projected starters Noah Brown and Corey Smith did not play this spring as both are still recuperating from their respective 2015 injuries.

Did Barrett make some throws in the 2016 spring game that were puzzling? Absolutely. Do I believe Barrett would have made those same throws in actual game competition? Absolutely not. Look at Barrett’s spring game as someone who was dealt some specific restrictions, and was testing the boundaries of what was possible, with a mandate to avoid injury at all costs. Look for Barrett to come out impressively against BGSU on September 3rd looking more like his typical self.

3. The 2016 Team Will Continue To Improve Every Week ~ It bears repeating, but with so many young players, the competition for playing time will be fierce and continuous all year long. Will inexperience sometimes be frustrating, especially in the secondary? Without question. The game at Oklahoma in week three will be must-watch TV for not just Ohio State and Oklahoma fans, but the nation –

@jbook37 Youth & inexperience. Wk 3 at OK looms large. By season's end, this team will be fearsome with speed & aggressiveness.

— Chip Minnich (@ChipMinnich) April 20, 2016

Don’t take my word for it; go back and listen to the podcast link that included Clair Crawford
. Read my man Tony Gerdeman’s thoughts on Ohio State following the spring game. Remember that I wrote this in April – this is going to be a team that will be feared by the end of the 2016 season.

With spring football completed for the Buckeyes, focus is shifted to recruiting and developing for the summer months leading into fall.

Ohio State is now through spring football and has the summer to look forward to. With so much happening this spring for the Buckeyes, including the NFL Draft just a week away, Ohio State has done a tremendous job showcasing why they're truly one of the elite programs in the country. Whether it's the visits and/or media pieces, recruits receiving attention from Ohio State have to be impressed with what the Scarlet and Gray have to offer.

2018 WR earns offer

2017 is poised to be a special year at the receiver position for coaches Urban Meyer and Zach Smith. With highly coveted prospects strongly considering the Buckeyes, the future is bright. However, just because one class of recruits is promising, that doesn't mean the work is finished. In fact Urban Meyer and his staff know that recruiting is a never-ending business. Knowing that, yesterday, per his twitter account, 2018 receiver prospect, Jahan Dotson made it known that the Buckeyes had offered him a scholarship.

Dotson, a Nazareth, Penn. prospect checks in at 5-foot-11, 160 pounds and already has an impressive offer list. While he doesn't yet have a ranking on the 247sports database, Jahan has seen his recruitment really take off as of late. Schools that have offered this 2018 product include: Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Miami, Notre Dame, and most recently Ohio State among others. It's extremely early in the process and there's no set leader as of now, but look for the Buckeyes to be near the top of his list as they usually are in today's age.

Extremely Excited and Thankful to announce that I have received an offer from the Ohio State Buckeyes ⚪pic.twitter.com/VAQ7HVqTa4

— Jahan Dotson (@JaHeisman_5) April 21, 2016

Kaindoh narrows it to 4

A prospect not new to Buckeye fans is 2017 defensive end product Joshua Kaindoh of Florida's IMG Academy. The 5-star prospect holds thirty offers and is ranked as the nation's best weak-side defensive end by 247sports. With an incredible frame, the 6-foot-6, 256 pound stud took to twitter to announce that he was down to a final list of four schools that he is still deciding between in his recruitment.

On that list, Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, and Notre Dame round out the final four. In surprise to many, Maryland, at once thought to be the destination for Kaindoh was left off the list. With that, the likely choice best thought to be leading the way for the 5-star would be Notre Dame. However, if Kaindoh gets to Columbus for a visit, all bets are off to who will lead the way for his services come the final decision. Urban Meyer and Ohio State have a proven track record and if Kaindoh is a product desired by Ohio State, the red carpet will certainly be rolled out.

Thank you to every school that has offered me with an opportunity to attend their University, but here is my Top 4. pic.twitter.com/uWdsj7CsYH

Akers feeling the love

Make no mistake about it. Ohio State's football graphic design team is the best in the business. The work they do for recruiting is second to none and hasn't gone unnoticed. Yesterday, the second best running back in the country according to 247sports, Cam Akers of Mississippi showed twitter just how good that graphic design for Ohio State really is. Akers, a 5-star has been pretty high on the Buckeyes as of late and things may get even more interesting in the near future.

With the recent news of current running back commit for the Buckeyes, Todd Sibley being asked to take a "gray shirt", Cam Akers may just be the reason why. Ohio State currently has both Todd Sibley and J.K. Dobbins in the 2017 fold, but room may be necessary if Ohio State truly wants Akers in Scarlet and Gray. Time will tell, but current quarterback signee, Dwayne Haskins Jr. certainly likes the idea of Akers in his future backfield.

Baron on OSU radar

Another prospect to receive love from the graphic design team was 5-star linebacker Baron Browning of Kennedale, Texas. Yesterday, via his twitter account, Baron showed the latest design that had been released signifying him dawning the Scarlet and Gray. The second best outside linebacker in the country according to 247sports has a prediction rate of crystal balls pegged toward the Texas Longhorns, but Ohio State is certainly on his radar. With nearly 40 college offers, Browning is easily one of the most coveted players in all of the country. To make things even more fun for Buckeye fans, check out the quarterback in the fictional graphic.

Vincent Jr. shows off the Buckeyes

Finally, yet another elite prospect to show off the graphic design work yesterday was Kary Vincent. Another Texas product, the Port Arthur cornerback rates as a 4-star according to 247sports and is the twenty-fifth best at his position in the nation for the 2017 class. Thought to be a Texas Christian lean, the Buckeyes are not seriously a player for his pledge yet. However, that could easily change as Kary plans to head to Columbus for a visit this coming summer in June. If this happens, anything is possible for Ohio State.

Not only did basketball helped the offensive tackle's footwork, but it also helped him get leverage on the football field.

"Probably the main thing basketball would help you with is footwork. Not that defending in basketball is like pass-blocking, but you kind of are mirroring the guy and to be able to react to what any other guys is doing with foot movement. Then when you are posting up, you have to get leverage."

- Ohio State tackle Taylor Decker via Stephen Czarda, Redskins.com

While he might not be quite like Jimmy Graham and Antonio Gates in terms of a basketball background, Taylor Decker has seen some of what he learned while playing high school basketball translate to the football field. When playing basketball you need quick feet, which Decker will certainly need when he moves on to the NFL. If his time at Ohio State is any indication, Decker should do just fine at the next level. Decker not only was named the Big Ten's Offensive Lineman of the Year last season, but he was also named an AP first team All-American.

Basketball isn't the only thing that has helped Decker become a projected first round draft pick next Thursday, the tackle credits the competition he has faced in practice while he was at Ohio State. Decker was able to be tested by the likes of Joey Bosa, Adolphus Washington, Michael Bennett, and others during his time in Columbus. Decker especially credits being able to work against Bosa the last few years, because of how complete of a player Bosa is. There has been some talk about whichever NFL team that drafts him switching his position from left tackle, where he played at Ohio State, to right tackle, Decker just wants to make an impact for the team he's drafted by, no matter where that is on the offensive line.

"It's a really special place right now. There's a lot of momentum at Ohio State. We can't lose it because we've lost some good players."

- Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer via Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

Not like there is every really a truly quiet time for Urban Meyer, aside from a golf outing he has been on in Florida the last few days with Jack Nicklaus. Recently the Ohio State head coach has had quite a busy spell. Not only did Meyer take part in an Ohio state high school coaches clinic recently, which was followed by the spring game on Saturday, but this week has players being evaluated by the coaches, followed by meetings with players' parents on Saturday. Add in the 2016 NFL Draft starting next Thursday, where Meyer will see plenty of his former Ohio State players find out where they'll start their NFL careers.

This offseason is taking on a little different feel from normal for Meyer and the rest of his staff, mostly because they have to focus on replacing 16 starters from last year's team. Because of the amount of youth the Buckeyes have this year, Meyer is pulling his assistants off the recruiting trail the next five Fridays, so that the coaches can spend a little extra time with the young players.

Even with the high number of starters to replace this year, Meyer feels the Ohio State program has a lot of momentum heading into this year. While there are plenty of positional battles to still be decided, some of the depth chart is starting to take shape. Yesterday Meyer announced that Jamarco Jones would be the starter at left tackle, while Isaiah Prince is getting closer to earning the right tackle job. On defense there has been plenty of players stating their case for some of the open spots, and the competitions will continue into preseason practices. It's easy to see why Meyer is so excited about his Ohio State team following the spring game.

"We were super tight. I would put my father-son relationship against anyone's. He taught me how to be a man."

- Former Ohio State safety Nate Ebner via Stan Grossfeld, The Boston Globe

After earning a Super Bowl ring during his time with the New England Patriots, now former Ohio State safety Nate Ebner is hoping to help the United States rugby team earn a gold medal at the Olympics this summer in Rio de Janeiro. After signing a two-year contract with the Patriots in early March, Ebner was granted a leave of absence by the team as he tries to make the rugby sevens squad. Instead of playing football during high school, Ebner spent his time playing rugby. Even during his first few years at Ohio State, Ebner was an All-American while playing club rugby, but decided to try his hand at football since he couldn't travel internationally with USA Rugby.

As he was growing up, Ebner's love for rugby was formed at a young age because his dad played the sport. As the years went on the pair became best friends, working together, training together, and playing rugby together. Then at just 19 years old, the younger Ebner lost his best friend when his father passed away following the injuries he suffered during a robbery attempt.

After his father's death, Ebner dropped out of Ohio State and had a hard time processing what happened. But after some words of motivation from his mother, Ebner returned to school and has used motivation from his father to help him realize his dreams. Not only has "Finish strong" been a rallying point for Ebner, but it was also used by the 2009 Ohio State team he was a part of. To this day, Ebner wears a wristband that says "Finish strong" on it, and it is helping him to work as hard as he can as he tries to be a part of the United State Olympic Team.

"We have formalized the agreement with the family. We took the next step, which was going ahead and seeking the registration, just like we did with Urban."

- Rick Van Brimmer, Ohio State's director of trademark and licensing services, on the university trademarking "Woody Hayes" via Evan Weese, Columbus Business First

It has been 29 years since the legendary coach has passed away, but Ohio State is on the verge of acquiring a trademark for "Woody Hayes". For years the coach's name has been licensed with permission from his late wife and son, but there hasn't been an official license from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Federal trademark registration would allow the university to better combat copyright infringement.

Currently Ohio State makes 12 percent on royalties of Buckeyes-related merchandise, and in the agreement with the Hayes' family, an extra four percent of royalties are directed to scholarships in his name. Last fiscal year over $120,000 of Woody Hayes-related merchandise was sold, with $14,500 going to the university, and $4,822 going to scholarships. The biggest year recently of sales of Hayes-related memorabilia came in 2004 when a Woody Hayes bobblehead was released, and accounted for $150,700 in wholesale revenue.
