The NFL Draft is right around the corner and over the next few days, the staff here at The Buckeye Battle Cry want to share with you our favorite Buckeye Moments from the draft eligible players leaving the Ohio State program.

Welcome everyone as I am here to give you the top 5 Buckeye moments of Joey Bosa. Joey Bosa will go down as one of the most popular Buckeyes of all time, and not to mention he’s one of the best defensive players to ever play for Ohio State as well.

Joey Bosa was a 5 star recruit from St. Thomas Aquinas (FL) high school. He was the 1st recruit in Urban Meyer’s 1st recruiting class to send in his letter of intent on national signing day. It just went to show how much Bosa wanted to play for Meyer and Ohio State.

Bosa’s career at Ohio State was a very memorable one. His stats might not jump out at you, but there is no denying his unbelievable talent. Teams would have to develop their game plan around Bosa, and he was constantly double teamed with blocks. He was a consensus all american in 2014 and 2015. His career stats are 148 tackles, 51 tackles for loss, and 26 sacks. He forced 6 fumbles, recovered 2, and had 1 career INT.

When I went to find his top 5 Buckeye moments, I wanted to have fun with it, like we all know Bosa would. Without further delay, here they are.

5. “The Shrug” vs OSU Opponents

::shrug:: (Its a simple celebration, that we now all love to do)

4. October 25, 2014 – “The Game Ender” vs Penn State

During the 2014 season Ohio State made the trip to Happy Valley to face Penn State. With Ohio State holding a 7 point lead in double OT, Penn St faced a 4th and 6 needing a 1st down to keep the game going. That’s when Mr Bosa decided to end it.

3. November 28, 2015 – “The Interception” vs TTUN

Joey Bosa is a freak athlete. We all know his talent. This next play took place in Ann Arbor and it just shows what Bosa is capable of.

2. December 6, 2014 – “The Scoop-N-Score” vs Wisconsin, B1G Championship Game

The 2014 Big 10 Championship game was a must win for Ohio State. Little did anyone know (even us Buckeye fans) how bad Ohio State would destroy Wisconsin. One of the big highlights of the game was this play.

1. November 28, 2015 – “The Sack” vs TTUN

If you don’t know by now I have great dislike for ttun. I love nothing more than beating them and beating them badly. So my favorite play from the game in Ann Arbor this past season is my #1 highlight for Joey Bosa

They’re still trying to get Jake Rudock (ttun QB) out of the turf

So there you have it everyone. My top 5 Buckeye moments for Joey Bosa. I’m sure there are more, but I love these 5.

Till the next time, Chill!

Cleveland Browns 1st and 2nd Rounds Draft Picks 2007-2015

It's Draft Day, so here's a little something to cheer up Browns fans: A review of all of the Browns' first- and second-round draft picks from 2007 to 2015. I chose this period because the core of any current NFL team should come from its players with three to nine years experience (2007 to 2013 drafts), with the younger players (2014 and 2015 drafts) developing behind them.

The Browns made an incredible 24 selections in the first two rounds (12 first, 12 second) over the nine-year period, and fully half of them have been utter and complete busts. Only eight of those draftees are still with the team, five of whom have arrived in the past two drafts.

Draft ChoiceNFL DraftRoundPick #GradeComments
OT Joe Thomas (Wisconsin)200713A+First ballot Hall of Famer; one of the top 5 Browns players of all time
QB Brady Quinn (Notre Dame)2007122F3-9 record as a starter, 66.8 passer efficiency rating; lasted only 3 years in CLE
DB Eric Wright (UNLV)2007253CA decent player who started 55 games in 4 years in CLE; recorded 9 interceptions
OC Alex Mack (California)2009121A-A borderline great player who made the Pro Bowl 3 times in 7 seasons in CLE
WR Brian Robiskie (Ohio State)2009236FThe Browns finally draft a Buckeye, and he's a colossal bust: 39 recs, 441 yds, 3 TDs in 3 seasons in CLE
WR Mohamed Massaquoi (Georgia)2009250DConcussions shortened his career, but he wasn't all that great when healthy; 118 recs, 1745 yds, 7 TDs, in 4 years in CLE
LB David Veikune (Hawaii)2009252FA monumental bust even by Browns' standards: he had no tackles during his lone season in CLE
CB Joe Haden (Florida)201017B+Not the lock-down corner that most Browns fans imagine, but still a solid selection; 19 INTs in 7 seasons in CLE
DB T.J. Ward (Oregon)2010238BA decent player; undersized and immature; after 4 years in CLE (5 INTs), seems to have found a home in DEN
RB Montario Hardesty (Tennessee)2010259FA ridiculous pick; entered the NFL as damaged goods, basically never played: 23 games, 537 yds, TD in 4 years in CLE
DT Phil Taylor (Baylor)2011121DFat and out-of-shape; character issues in college; barely an impact in 4 seasons in CLE: 109 tackles, 7 sacks
DE Jabaal Sheard (Pittsburgh)2011237B-Was never going to be the elite edge rusher that Browns hoped for, but a solid 2nd round pick; 23 sacks in 4 years in CLE
WR Greg Little (North Carolina)2011259DCollege RB with character issues and stone hands; much worse than his stats: 155 rec, 1821 yds, 8 TDs in 3 years in CLE
RB Trent Richardson (Alabama)201213FSlow, overweight, no vision, no desire; stats very misleading: 1055 yds (62.1 ypg, 3.5 ypc), 11 TDs in 17 games in CLE
QB Brandon Weeden (Oklahoma State)2012122FAll the physical tools, but absolutely no feel for the position; 5-15 record, 71.8 passer efficiency in 2 years in CLE
OL Mitchell Schwartz (California)2012237BA solid offensive lineman with a definite upward trajectory; unfortunately left in free agency before 2016 season
WR Josh Gordon (Baylor)20122supINCIn 2013, had 3rd best receiving season in NFL history (117.6 ypg), but played only 5 games since due to drug suspensions
LB Barkevious Mingo (Louisiana State)201316FNice, well-spoken, possible future in broadcasting ... maybe as soon as this year; 102 tackles, 7 sacks in 3 seasons in CLE
DB Justin Gilbert (Oklahoma State)201418FCharacter, attitude, motor, desire issues galore, just a tremendous slouch; 33 tackles, one INT in 23 games in CLE
QB Johnny Manziel (Texas A+M)2014122FNot drafted to be a starting QB, drafted to be a circus clown show; in that light, maybe he was an A+ selection
OL Joel Bitonio (Nevada)2014235B-Starting LG benefited from playing between Pro Bowlers Joe Thomas and Alex Mack; possible mainstay on Browns' OL
DT Danny Shelton (Washington)2015112INCHas done very little thru 2 seasons (95 tackles, 1.5 sacks) except jumping on the pile; looks good in a skirt, though
OL Cameron Erving (Florida State)2015119FWeak and un-athletic; missed many assignments; this mega-bust was dumped for a 5th rounder after just 2 years
LB Nate Orchard (Utah)2015251INCAfter a decent rookie campaign (36 tackles, 3 sacks, INT, FF); played only 3 games in 2016 due to injury
WR Corey Coleman (Baylor)2016115INCBrowns fell in love with his speed, ignored his bad hands, injury history, homesickness. 33 rec, 413 yds, 3 TD as rookie
DE Emmanuel Ogbah (Oklahoma State)2016232INCShowed flashes, with 53 tackles, 6 sacks, 3 batted passes in 2016. Is he a mainstay or a role player?
DE Myles Garrett (Texas A+M)201711INCConsensus #1 player in the draft. Will likely get run over by an RTA bus while chasing hookers down West 65th Street
ATH Jabroni Peppers (scUM)2017125FThis is an "F" waiting to happen, so why wait?
TE David Njoku (Miami)2017129INCYoung, athletic, lack of production - probably overdrafted
QB Deshone Kizer (Notre Dame)2017252INCPossible starter as a rookie
If we assign numbers to the letter grades (A+ = 4.33; A = 4.00; A- = 3.67, etc), then the Browns' twenty-four first- and second-round draft picks from 2007 to 2015 received 27.67 total points (INCs not rated), for an average grade of 1.38 (which translates to a D+). It's no wonder that the Browns have consistently been the worst franchise in the NFL.

Thomas might not have to go too far from Columbus for his NFL ventures.

"If [Michael] Thomas is there? He could turn into the Browns' best pick of a Buckeye since Paul Warfield in 1964."

- Doug Lesmerises, Northeast Ohio Media Group

That's pretty high praise from Lesmerises on Thomas, who is absolutely a talented wideout. He mentions that the odds of Thomas being there aren't very good, but if he is, he would be a great fit in Cleveland. The Browns need help at receiver, especially if they hope to resurrect the career of Robert Griffin III, who came over from Washington during the offseason. Lesmerises said that Thomas' father told him at the draft that his son was a perfectionist, and that sounds like the type of person the Browns need in their organization, when you consider what a mess it can be at times.

There has also been talks of Ezekiel Elliott being picked as high as No. 4, and as low as No. 13. The Browns fall in between there at No. 8, and perhaps the two Buckeyes could both wind up staying in Ohio, and moving north to Cleveland. The odds of that happening are low, but who knows. It would be pretty neat to see a pair of great Buckeyes continue their football careers together, and it would be even sweeter if they were able to bring the city a winning product. Aside from Elliott, Thomas is a complete receiver that any team will be lucky to have. Being a receiver picked in the early rounds nowadays also definitely says something about your game.

"It's something I've been dreaming of and working towards all my life. You never expect to be in this moment."

- Eli Apple, via Zach Braziller, The New York Post

Eli Apple, like many prospects on Thursday and throughout the weekend, will be making his lifelong dreams come true when he hears his name called during the 2016 NFL Draft. Braziller documents that Apple has watched every NFL Draft for the past 10 years, making sure he took time to make his schedule work. Braziller also notes that Apple refers to himself as a "football nerd," and used to love to be able to tell people stats. But he also had it in him where he wanted to be able to produce some himself, and he's certainly done that in his time at Ohio State.

Now, Apple is going to experience something that only a handful of football players ever do, and that's hearing their name called by the commissioner. After years of sleeping with a football, studying stats, going to camps, countless hours of watching film (which, apparently he was huge on starting in high school), and listing out his goals for his mom, his time is finally here. Braziller says that NFL Network analyst Charles Davis has Apple going as high as No. 13 to the Dolphins, or falling to the Panthers at the end of the first round. That would be pretty neat for Apple if he did, as he would likely make an immediate impact, filling in for the recently departed Josh Norman. But no matter how it shakes out, Apple will have fulfilled his dreams.

"What happens to teams the year after they lose double-digit draft classes? Ohio State is about to find out."

- Bill Landis, Northeast Ohio Media Group

There's undoubtedly a prideful aspect to having so many players considered great draft picks, with the potential of breaking numerous draft records. But after the 2016 NFL Draft has been completed this weekend, the reality will really set in for fans across Buckeye nation that those guys won't be suiting up and playing in Ohio Stadium on Saturdays anymore. Bill Landis points out some interesting figures to explore how teams in similar situations have fared since losing an abundance of talent to the NFL.

Landis says there have been 10 instances of a school losing at least 10 players to the draft. Those teams went a combined 115-16 (.878) the year with their NFL-caliber players. The year after, their winning percentage (expectedly) dropped, with a record of 100-29 (.775). When you consider the amount of talent that is actually being lost, that's not terrible. But it also makes sense why those teams didn't have an extreme drop off. You'd have to imagine the schools able to produce that much talent are already powerhouses, and are capable of quick reloads. Some of the teams similar to Ohio State have been former USC, Florida State, Oklahoma, and Miami teams just to name some. From recruiting classes and spring ball, we should expect Ohio State to keep that winning percentage up, if not increase it in the 2016 season.

The NFL Draft is right around the corner and over the next few days, the staff here at The Buckeye Battle Cry want to share with you our favorite Buckeye Moments from the draft eligible players leaving the Ohio State program.

Today, we take a closer look at offensive tackle Taylor Decker, who was a three-year starter, Lombardi Award semifinalist, Outland candidate, and was voted a co-captain. He was named a consensus All-American, B1G Offensive Lineman of the year (Rimington-Pace Award) and a first-team all-Big Ten Conference pick.

Here are some top moments from Decker’s career at Ohio State.

3. September, 2015 – “Running it up” vs Virginia Tech

One of the best of this past season where Buckeyes rushing was one of the best ever with 359 yards; a lot of them behind Taylor Decker.

2. November 8, 2014 – “Running Wild” vs Michigan State

One of Taylor’s better nights against MSU; the team rushed for 268 yards.

1. November 29, 2014 – “Trampling TTUN” vs Michigan

Taylor had a pretty dominant showing against TTUN in 2014, with the Buckeyes rushed for 233 yards at 6 yards per clip. You’ll notice Decker sets the edge on pass protection, seals to the inside and generally provides running lanes.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Joey Bosa story, unlike most of Urban Meyer's recruits, began the minute Bosa stepped on campus. A four-star recruit out of Fort Lauderdale, Bosa's unique blend of power and athleticism allowed him to thrive from day one as a defensive line chess piece who could excel anywhere on the field.

An impressive freshman campaign saw Bosa get better and better as the 2013 season wore on. Bosa chucking Connor Cook to the turf like a rag doll was one of the few moments from the 2013 Big Ten Championship that made Buckeye fans smile, and Freshman All-American honors simply confirmed what everybody already knew: No. 97 must be accounted for at all times on the football field.

Bosa entered his Sophomore campaign with a ton of hype, and while 1.5 sacks in his first three games wasn't bad, Bosa's arrival as the most feared defensive lineman in America came one Saturday afternoon in Columbus against the upset minded Cincinnati Bearcats.

I'm honestly still confused how Bearcats' quarterback Gunner Kiel survived this hit. Regardless, Bosa stepped his game up during the middle of the 2014 campaign to the tune of 8.5 sacks over the course of five games. But with Bosa, raw sack numbers don't tell the whole story. With the ability to engage and shed offensive lineman at will, Bosa was equally difficult to handle in the running game as he was in the passing game.

Then, on one cold fall night with thousands screaming their heads off amidst a sea of white, Bosa took the matter of winning and losing a key football game into his own hands. His sacrifice? Christian Hackenberg.

Yes, Bosa completely obliterating an overwhelmed running back is what will stick out to Buckeyes fans for years to come, but the best part about this play is that Bosa wasn't even supposed to rush the ‘B' gap like he did.

"I was so exhausted I didn't even run the play right. I just shot the gap. I was supposed to loop out. It ended up working out pretty well."

The rest of 2014 also worked out ‘pretty well' for Bosa, as he took home the Big Ten's Nagurski-Woodson Defensive Player of the Year and its Smith-Brown Defensive Lineman of the Year awards. Unanimous first team All-American honors followed and were the result of Bosa's 13.5 sack season (second highest in Ohio State history). As for crunch time? Bosa played a huge roll in Ohio State's three postseason wins to no one's surprise, and he even tallied a touchdown against the Wisconsin Badgers in the 2014 Big Ten Championship.

After being suspended for the opening game of 2015, Bosa picked up right where he left off. While Bosa wasn't able to replicate the same kind of gaudy sack numbers as a Junior, his impact on the field was still just as dominant. I mean, what was Bosa supposed to do when teams would literally triple team him? Taking one look at Bosa's career stat line makes it pretty clear that this is one of the best defensive linemen that Ohio State has ever seen.

Bosa_stats.0.jpg

Bosa has the numbers and the accolades, but what traits pop out to scouts on film? Let's take a look.

Strengths: Block shedding, strength, football instinct

A more broad list of Bosa's strengths might read something like this: Everything. But seriously. Watch any game that Bosa has played in from 2014-2015 and it won't take long to figure who is the best player on the field at almost all times.

JB_1.0.jpg

While Bosa's most ideal NFL position is probably as a 4-3 defensive end, whoever ends up drafting Bosa should continue Ohio State's habit of moving Bosa all around the formation. Here, Bosa lines up as a three-technique defensive tackle in Ohio State's feared ‘rushmen' package.

JB_2.0.jpg

Curiously, Penn State's design on this play called for their guard to bypass Bosa and instead onto one of Ohio State's linebackers. On a third-and-10 situation that screamed ‘pass', Bosa shows excellent technique by shoving the guard attempting to get to the second level. Ohio State's linebackers are not slow by any stretch of the imagination, but allowing an offensive lineman a clear path to any linebacker typically spells trouble. While Bosa shoving this guard isn't something that will show up on the stat sheet, it's another example of Bosa mastering the little things that help make an entire defense great.

Additionally, Bosa knows that as a defensive lineman, when you are unblocked you need to get your eyes down the line of scrimmage. Plays like Bosa's sack against Penn State are the exception to the rule, but in general: anytime a defensive lineman is left unblocked it is on purpose. In this case, the idea was for Penn State's number 11 to have a solid angle to block Bosa and create a running crease inside. If only it was that easy.

JB_3.0.jpg

Bosa shrugs (sorry) off the block attempt, which isn't that remarkable until you consider that Bosa was essentially standing still (since he had just redirected the offensive guard) when number 11 came in full speed attempting to move Bosa. Always the playmaker, Bosa isn't satisfied with simply blowing up the play: he finishes it.

JB_4.0.jpg

Bosa decleats the Penn State running back before he could even decide what to do with the ball. Certain players just seem to have the innate ability to hit guys harder than most, Bosa is one of them.

Weaknesses: Size and speed combination isn't a great NFL fit

Don't get me wrong, at 6'5, 275 lbs Joey Bosa is a load for anyone handle. The only ‘issue' is that Bosa doesn't fit as neatly into NFL defenses as some would like. The prototypical defensive end in today's NFL is someone with elite bend to get around the edge and get after quarterbacks. You'll hear draft experts talk about Bosa as a 10, not 20, sack guy, and this is the main reason why. While Bosa was able to utilize his power and strength to dominate off the edge in college, the thought is that this won't be quite as easy at the next level, and Bosa's lack of elite bend is really the only concern for Bosa as far as pass rushing goes.

Despite his main position in college being as a 4-3 defensive end, Bosa's game might be best suited as a 4-3 defensive tackle or 3-4 defensive end. With plenty of experience rushing on the inside, Bosa possesses rare ability to get to the quarterback consistently wherever he lines up. In order to continue to dominate on the inside of the line like he did in college however, Bosa will need to bulk up a bit as the big uglies he'll be facing off against will all be 300 lbs +.

With all that said: Joey Bosa is my pick as the number one overall prospect in the 2016 class.

Best Case NFL Comparison: Justin Smith

Please for the love of god stop the J.J Watt comparisons. Watt is going to go down as one of the most dominant players to ever play football, so setting Bosa's expectation as a potential top 10 player ever seems like a bit much don't you think?

As LGHL's fearless leader Luke Zimmermann pointed out, Justin Smith is a much more realistic comparison for Bosa. Putting aside the fact that they're both white, Smith made a career out of making plays in San Francisco from his 3-4 defensive end spot. Most importantly, Smith was such a force that he needed to be double teamed at all times, which led to his teammates (most notably Aldon Smith) racking up sacks. Sound familiar Columbus?

Worst Case NFL Comparison: Chris Long

Bosa's floor as a NFL player appears to be as a plus run defender who may be sporadically taken off the field in passing situations. This would be a fine NFL career for most, but as Chris Long knows, a fine NFL career won't cut it for a top five overall pick.

While Long has had his moments in the league, injuries and the emergence of fellow defensive end Robert Quinn has made the one time number two overall pick an afterthought. Recently signed this past off-season by the New England Patriots, Long continues to receive interest as a potentially dominant defensive end since everyone knows the ability is there.

While both Bosa and Long also have had successful NFL fathers, the worry with Bosa is that when a team spends a top five pick on a defensive end, the desired result is more Von Miller impact, not Chris Long.

NFL Draft Projection: Top 10 pick

It pains me that I had to write 10 instead of five, but mock drafts have continued to show Bosa sliding down the board. While the Chicago Bears at pick number 11 should be seen as Bosa's floor, don't be shocked if Bosa is gone as early as pick number four.

Most ‘Joey Bosa' Play: Thanks for playing, Jake

While Bosa's sack against Penn State is probably his most memorable play, the fact of the matter is that Bosa ran over a running back who was obviously in over his head with that blocking assignment. I think a play where the offense purposely overloads their line to account for Bosa, only to watch as he gets around the edge unopposed on his way to slamming his ex-high school teammate and hated Wolverine quarterback to the ground, does the trick.

The NFL Draft is right around the corner and over the next few days, the staff here at The Buckeye Battle Cry want to share with you our favorite Buckeye Moments from the draft eligible players leaving the Ohio State program.

Today, we take a closer look at defensive tackle Cardale Jones, who finished his Buckeye career undefeated and as the first signal caller to win a national championship since Craig Krenzel. The Cleveland native heads into the NFL as one of the more intriguing NFL prospects and will go down in Ohio State history as one of the most beloved players in school history.

Here are some top moments from the barrel of 12 Gauge’s career at Ohio State.

October 10, 2015 — “A Career Day” vs. Maryland

Say what you will about Cardale Jones as the starting quarterback in 2015, but you can’t take away from his career day against Maryland early in October. Even though Urban Meyer handed off the offense to J.T. Barrett in the red zone — Jones tossed for a career-high 291 yards and two touchdowns to set the tone for a then struggling offense. Cardale completed 21 of his 28 pass attempts — which also is a career high.

September 7, 2015 — “The Revenge Game” vs. Virginia Tech

Despite winning a national championship the year before, Ohio State had something to prove against Virginia Tech to open the season. The Buckeyes had revenge on their mind, after the Hokies embarrassed them at Ohio Stadium a year prior.

Cardale Jones himself, had a ton to prove. He had been named the starter over J.T. Barrett and everyone wanted to respond to him being the leader of the offense. 12 Gauge set the tone from the get go — getting done on the ground and in the air. Jones rushed for 99 yards on 13 carries. He also completed 10 of his 19 pass attempts for 187 yards.

January 1st, 2015 — “Being the Best, by Beating the Best” vs. Alabama in CFP Playoffs (Sugar Bowl)

Primetime players step up in big games. Cardale Jones did that against Alabama. The stat line isn’t pretty, but when the Buckeyes needed big plays, their third-string quarterback was there to make things happen.

His play with his legs and in the air on third down, when his team needed to move the chains, was legendary. From the two 3rd down completions to Jalin Marshall late in the second quarter, to the powerful runs that gave his team a chance to reset things and move down the field.

153 of his 243 yards passing came on third down.

In his second start of his collegiate career, Cardale Jones was tough as nails.

January 12, 2015 — “Outdoing Mariota” vs. Oregon in the CFP National Championship

They couldn’t win without Braxton Miller at quarterback. Cardale Jones had two great games, but the Buckeyes will not be able to beat the Oregon Ducks without J.T. Barrett. On that January night, Cardale Jones didn’t have to be superman. He already had a super hero in the backfield named Ezekiel Elliott.

Yet it was Jones that helped set the tone for the Buckeyes throughout the biggest game for Ohio State in the Urban Meyer era.

The signal caller that Urban Meyer once questioned as a long-term member of the program, orchestrated one of the best offensive performances in school history. 16/23 for 242 yards will never tell the story of how a third-string quarterback was given the keys to Tom Herman’s offense. It won’t fill the pages of the narrative us fans tell our children and grandchildren.

We’ll remember the powerful runs that softened the Duck defensive line. We’ll brag about Cleveland’s Finest — responding to an early turnover by taking full control of his team’s destiny.

Marcus Mariota left the field as a Heisman Trophy winner. Cardale Jones left as an enshrined legend in the pantheon of Ohio State gridiron history.

December 6th, 2014 — “The whole state of Ohio is Counting on Cardale Jones” vs. Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship

The third string quarterback was asked to not only beat the 11th best defense in the country, but do it in convincing fashion, with a trip to the College Football Playoff on the line. The man they call 12 gauge delivered a slug of epic proportion — going 12/17 for 259 yards and three touchdowns. The B1G Championship MVP forever locked his place in Buckeye history with this performance. After defeating Wisconsin 59-0, the Buckeyes continued their run against Alabama and Oregon.

With Cardale Jones as their leader at the line of scrimmage, in three of the best postseason performances in college football history.

Another great weekend of Big Ten Lacrosse is now in the books. The race to Baltimore and a spot in the Big Ten Tournament saw three teams punch their tickets to the party that starts May 5. Maryland, Rutgers and Johns Hopkins have all clinched a spot in the battle for the conference championship, but the fourth and final spot is up for grabs. There is plenty to play for as we enter the final week of regular season conference play. But let’s recap the week that was. No. 3 Maryland Terrapins (11-2, 4-0 Big Ten) The Terps took on Ohio

The 2016 NFL Draft starts Thursday night in Chicago. With only hours remaining before Roger Goddell takes the stage, the always-present anonymous sources are spewing the usual negative comments, many of which are laughable. The latest: One anonymous scout questioning Ohio State defensive back Eli Apple’s life skills, going as far as to say that he “can’t cook.” Read more about Apple’s scouting report here. If true, what exactly does it have to do with Apple’s ability to cover a receiver, make an open-field tackle or be a good teammate? Nothing at all. And, based on the Twitter reaction to

The NFL Draft is right around the corner and over the next few days, the staff here at The Buckeye Battle Cry want to share with you our favorite Buckeye Moments from the draft eligible players from the Ohio State program.

Today, we look at tight end Nick Vannett. The Westerville, OH native emerged near the end of the 2014 season and in the 2015 season as an effective run blocker and reliable receiver.

Here are my five top moments during Vannett’s Ohio State career.

5. November 29, 2014 – The “TD Catch” vs. Michigan

Early in the 1st quarter, Vannett slips across the formation into the left flat for an easy 6-yard TD to open the scoring. A fairly straightforward play, but a TD in The Game is always memorable. The play is the first one on the video, below.

4. January 1, 2015 – “First Down Catch” vs. Alabama Playoff Game

Ohio State was trying to obtain some momentum late in the 1st half against Alabama. With the Buckeyes trailing 21-13 and 1:00 remaining in the half, Nick runs a crisp post pattern and hauls in an 18 yard pass for a 1st down at the ‘Bama 40. Three plays later, the Spencer->Thomas touchdown pulls OSU to within one point. The play occurs at the 12:50 mark in the video, below.

The next three highlights all come from the National Championship game against Oregon. I chose them, because Vannett made big plays in the biggest game of the year.

3. January 12, 2015 – “Trap Block, Zeke’s TD Run” vs. Oregon, National Championship Game

Trailing early, 7-0, Ohio State was mounting a threat in their second drive of the game. At the Oregon 33 yard line, Vannett came across the formation to trap block a Duck, which sprung Zeke Elliott free for a game tieing run. The play occurs at the 5:20 mark in the video, below.

2. January 12, 2015 – “The TD Catch” vs. Oregon, National Championship Game

Nick can open holes for running backs to score. But, can he catch passes, too? You bet. Following an Elliott run to the 1 yard line, Vannett slips from the slot into the left flat and hauls in the TD pass to give Ohio State a 14-7 lead with 1:15 to play in the first quarter. The play occurs at the 8:01 mark in the video, below.

1. January 12, 2015 – “The Trap Block-Breathing Room” vs. Oregon, National Championship Game

This was not a scoring play, but it was probably one of Vannett’s most clutch efforts of the game. Early in the 2nd quarter, Ohio State had just held Oregon off with a stout goal line stand, taking possession at the one yard line. On a 2nd-9 play, Vannett’s block enables Zeke to spring a 26 yard run. The Buckeyes eventually turned the ball over, but Oregon’s possession began inside their 10 yard line. The play occurs at the 11:28 mark in the video, below.

Memorable performances in a memorable game. Thank you, Nick.

Hello everyone and welcome as I am here to give you the top 5 Buckeye moments for Ezekiel Elliott. Now I know what you’re thinking, there’s enough of Zeke for 10, 15, 20 top moments. I have the tough job by finding just 5. Its a hard job, but someone has to do it!

Elliott is going to go down as one of the greatest RBs in Ohio State history, and that’s saying something with all the great RBs Ohio State has had throughout its history. Elliott finished his Ohio State career with 592 carries, 3921 yards rushing and 43 TDs. What an amazing career at Ohio State for Ezekiel Elliott.

Now, as I said, I could find a dozen runs by Elliot that could be in his top 5 list. But I want to include other plays as well. You’ll see what I mean when we get to the list. I might also cheat a little, wink wink.

Without further delay here are the top 5 Buckeye moments for Ezekiel Elliot.

#5

Elliot was a great runner, but he was also a great blocker as well. The play you will instantly recognize. Its Braxton Miller’s famous spin move TD run vs Virginia Tech, but keep your eyes on Elliot in the play and watch him level a LB chasing Miller.

#4

Its the 2014 Big 10 Championship game vs Wisconsin. Ohio State needed to win and win big in order to get into the first ever College football playoffs. With news of his good friend Kosta Karageorge passing away before the game, Elliot ran 81 yards and pointed to the sky.

#3

3 is the number for this next highlight cause it’s 3 runs. Yeah, I told you I would cheat, but vs Indiana, Elliot had an amazing day, with 3 huge TD runs to help the Buckeyes beat the Hoosiers.

#2

After starting Ohio State QB J.T. Barrett left with a serious leg injury vs TTUN, Ohio State faced a 4th down and 1. With everyone in the world knowing who was going to get the ball, TTUN still couldn’t stop him.

#1

It was real hard picking #1. I thought about it for days, weeks. It kept me up nights. What play could I pick for #1. Oh who the hell am I kidding, you know what’s #1! 85 yards through the heart of the south

There you have it. What I think is the top 5 Buckeye moments for Ezekiel Elliot. I realize that everyone won’t agree, but again, we could debate all day with a great RB like Elliot.

Till the next time, Chill!

The Big Ten's getting paid for the first half of their TV rights. But what about the rest?

Last week, the Big Ten shook up the sports media world, as a report surfaced that they were nearing an agreement with Fox over half of their media rights for up to $250M. We wrote about what this particular deal means in more detail, as it could impact other conferences, as well as the TV industry in general. But the major takeaway is that Big Ten schools are about to get a ton of money. That's a good thing.

But Fox is only slated to buy half of the broadcast rights for Big Ten football and basketball games. What about the other half? Sports Business Journal dropped another report about the Big Ten's options last night. Let's dig into what that means.

As an ordinary fan, why should I care about the Big Ten's second TV rights deal?

To be honest, you probably don't need to care about the monetary angle much, especially if you're an Ohio State fan. Big Ten schools are going to make a ton of money from this agreement, no matter who buys the second half of the TV rights. If you're a fan of a smaller school, like Northwestern or Purdue, the additional TV revenue may make a bigger difference, but Ohio State is going to be pretty rich, whether this deal is worth $200M or $250M, and the financial size of the deal shouldn't impact their ability to compete. Ohio State doesn't need to make more TV money, per season, than an SEC program to win a national title.

But the next deal will also determine where you'll be watching Big Ten events on the next several years. Not every TV channel has the best streaming service, for example. Maybe you have really strong opinions about broadcasters, or the broadcast quality of certain TV channels. Maybe you're a penny-pincher with your cable package, and you want to make sure that you have the channel where Big Ten games are going to be on. Ohio State basketball isn't going to get shuffled off to like, TruTV or anything, but it's possible the next arrangement won't be as simple as it was last time.

Why? Won't ESPN just buy the other half?

You might think that. After all, the Big Ten and ESPN have had a long broadcasting relationship, ESPN owns the rights to the College Football Playoff, a gazillion bowl games, and has helped secure big non-conference matchups. And per SBJ, ESPN actually wants rights to the Big Ten. And they may very well just end up buying the other half of the rights. But it might not be so simple:

ESPN's lowball bid is the most shocking part of these negotiations and could be the first sign that the network's cost-cutting measures are starting to affect its rights deals ... But we can't think of another time that ESPN did not place a competitive bid for a property it really wanted. Sources said ESPN's offer was well below Fox's. This is the network that has set the parameters for sports rights negotiations since the late 1990s, and it should send shock waves to sports leagues that ESPN is more cost-conscious with its rights fees. The question is how long this belt-tightening will last given that most major sports rights aren't up for several years. Word is that ESPN already has set up meetings to bid on what remains of the Big Ten's rights. But if ESPN's bid wasn't competitive for the first package, we're skeptical that it will be competitive on the second one.

You might be aware of the much reported on budget tightening at ESPN right now. Multiple name (see: expensive) broadcasters are leaving the network in the near future, and revenue projections from the company have lagged in recent months. That ESPN wouldn't just buy the whole dang thing isn't a big surprise. But industry sources appear to be very surprised with how non-competitive ESPN's bid was.

It's entirely possible the suits in Bristol could snap back, decide letting Ohio State and Michigan walk isn't good for business, and make a real offer. But it seems the odds that the Big Ten could completely break away from ESPN and go with somebody else are non-trivial.

Who are the other possible bidders?

NBC Sports is one that has been mentioned (note: we should point out that NBCUniversal's invested over $200 million in Vox Media, who owns this website). SBJ doesn't seem to think highly of their chances, noting that while NBC has "open broadcast windows", adding the Big Ten doesn't fit in with their overall broadcasting strategy. NBC tends to buy rights to content it controls exclusively (the NHL, the Olympics, etc). Outside of Notre Dame, NBC also doesn't really broadcast a lot of college football.

Are there any others?

Another possibility that has been bandied about is a combination of CBS and Turner. CBS already broadcasts some Big Ten basketball games, and could add a Big Ten football game to produce doubleheaders with the SEC during the fall. Both networks also already broadcast the NCAA Tournament. TNT hasn't really been in the football business since losing NFL rights in the late 90s, but has shown it can very capably handle pro and collegiate basketball broadcasts.

Fox could also decide to buy the rest of the Big Ten's package, but that seems unlikely, given potentially prohibitive costs.

Do Big Ten coaches have any preferences?

Yes. Per SBJ, coaches absolutely want to stick with ESPN in some capacity, as being on ESPN is something that potentially matters to recruits. Big East coaches expressed concern about moving out of public consciousness after their move to Fox, which led to cratering ratings, and after what happened to the NHL after it left ESPN, concerns about the Big Ten suffering from a loss of exposure don't seem to be unfounded. Even if the conference as a whole could make more money elsewhere, coaches and administrators would prefer to keep some relationship with the outlet that still has the largest influence on college sports.

Do you have a personal preference?

I personally do. I can't say I'm much of a TV "power user", though. I don't have really strong opinions on most broadcast crews, I don't stream sporting events very often, and I don't have really passionate opinions about the packaging or video work from most channels. Generally, I think most of them are fine.

But as a fan of a Big Ten school, I would prefer the conference stick with ESPN, even if that means they can't replicate the $250M for the second half of the rights. Part of this is a convenience factor. I don't want to have to worry about finding/paying for Fox Sports 2, NBC Sports, or other secondary channels. The ESPN family of networks is not hard to find.

But I also agree with conference coaches and administrators, in that I think it would be helpful to continue a relationship with the largest broadcaster of college sports. Ohio State fans sometimes complain about perceived anti-Ohio State bias from ESPN, which isn't necessarily true, but if their conference was not on any of ESPN's properties at all, that could become a slightly different conversation. Why give the biggest mouthpiece in the sport a reason to not talk about you? It probably matters to players, it more likely matters to recruits, and even though we pretend it doesn't, it matters to many others as well.

Maybe the Big Ten divorcing from ESPN in a good move in the long term. But in the short/medium term (i.e, the entire length of this six-year deal), it would make me nervous.

Not this garbage again.

Ah, anonymous scout season. The time of the year when latent racism can get thrown around like Mardi Gras beads and character assassination is the only real currency du jour.

After already inappropriately being asked about his sexuality by NFL brass, Ohio State corner Eli Apple is once again on the receiving end of shade, this time from an anonymous coward with a scout's notebook:

"I worry about him because of off-the-field issues. The kid has no life skills. At all. Can't cook. Just a baby. He's not first round for me. He scares me to death." Wonderlic was 21. "He probably has as much talent as anybody but he, like a lot of those Ohio State guys, is inconsistent," said a third scout. "He squats, and receivers run by him. He's more in catch-up mode than reaction mode. He bothers me a little bit."

Let the record show that if an inability to cook was a professional deal breaker, yours truly would be living in a cardboard box by now.

Even if the vast majority of folks reading this would rather heat up Hamburger Helper than try and master salt-crusted fish, let's try and keep some perspective: Ohio State football players are served the vast majority of their meals at training tables prepared by nutritionists and team chefs alike. There's no logical reason unless you just happen to be really into cooking why you'd need advanced proficiency in this arena after three years under program supervision.

Given that Apple is a relative safe bet to hear his name called in the late portion of the first round, it's likely that this kind of sad criticism won't go very far. At the very least, the next time Apple takes an interception to the house in the professional ranks, I suppose he could always dedicate the score to his last great late night McDonald's run.

One of the more unlikely sounding affiliate memberships probably won't be coming to pass after all.

Last month, the Big Ten secured a major coup, in adding Notre Dame to the conference in hockey, starting in the 2017-2018 season. The move gave the Big Ten access to another influential, high quality program that should help the conference secure more than one postseason bid a season on a more regular basis. But it also created a problem.

Seven teams is a bit of an uncomfortable number for scheduling. Eight would make much more sense, no? Speculation that the Big Ten could add another affiliate member centered around one big program, but now it appears that is off the table.

Arizona State will reportedly not become an affiliate member of the Big Ten, per WCCO in Minnesota. The Sun Devils, who currently compete as an independent, will reportedly decide between the WCHA and the NCHC.

So, what's next for the Big Ten then? Per the article:

The Big Ten, which for more than a hundred years did not have any affiliate members, thought it would be prudent to see how those three new affiliate memberships go before adding any more of them, a source said, and for now at least, is content with seven men's hockey teams.

The conventional expansion wisdom is that a program like ASU would be attractive, given their proximity to a huge city and TV market, but that isn't really how non-revenue sports works. The TV audience, right now, for Big Ten hockey is so small that "markets", especially for newer programs, aren't really a factor.

The president of the Big Ten Network, Mark Silverman, told Land-Grant Holy Land earlier this year that the conference's network aspires to go where fans want them. Though he wouldn't speak specifically to Arizona State, Silverman echoed sentiments that a hypothetical more western partner could produce a potential opportunity, if the demand was there.

"We're always looking to expand the network. Johns Hopkins was already in Maryland so we already had the distribution. We've never added a school other than football or basketball where we looked to grow the network," Silverman said.

"As long as we produce compelling programming, if there's enough fans that want to watch us, hopefully we could be distributed in those areas."

If you're a fan of Big Ten hockey, this is probably for the best. The Big Ten needs to improve the depth of the conference, especially with Ohio State, Michigan State and Wisconsin struggling a bit, and Arizona State just isn't very good right now. Given their geography, it's also hard to imagine them staying in the Big Ten for the long term.

Seven might not be a perfect number right now, but waiting a few years to see if other Big Ten programs can start a hockey team (maybe they can use some of that new Fox money), or if a more attractive regional program (like a North Dakota, or even a Miami), is probably the best bet.

You shouldn't expect the Big Ten to stay at seven forever, but don't be surprised if it does for multiple seasons before making any changes to membership.
