Six different Buckeye pitchers combined to silence the Bearcats.

Ohio State used a carousel of pitchers and took advantage of opposition mistakes to take care of business in a midweek game against Cincinnati at Bill Davis Stadium on Tuesday. The Buckeyes ran away with a 9-0 win against the Bearcats to extend their winning streak to three straight and improve to 24-12-1 on the season.

Freshman Ryan Feltner started on the hill for Ohio State, but threw just three innings by design in anticipation of this weekend's Big Ten series against Illinois. Feltner, whose development in his first year in the program is really becoming apparent, allowed one hit and hit two batters, striking out two, in a scoreless appearance.

Austin Woodby, Daulton Mosbarger, Seth Kinker, Joe Stoll, and Kyle Michalik combined to finish the game, with Cincinnati mustering just three hits on the night. Woodby, the redshirt sophomore who transferred from Cincinnati, picked up his team-high fifth win of the season after his two scoreless frames.

The Bearcats sent sophomore A.J. Olasz to the bump, and the lefty pitched well but fell victim to defensive miscues. In four innings, Olasz allowed four runs, but only one was earned. He fell to 1-4 on the year.

Ronnie Dawson bumped his batting average back over .300 for the season with a 3-for-3 night at the plate for Ohio State. The junior, who scored twice, improved to 9-for-12 in his career against Cincinnati.

Nick Sergakis joined Dawson in fueling the offensive attack, going 2-for-3 and driving in a pair of runs. The senior co-captain took sole possession of the Big Ten lead in doubles with 14.

Small ball put Ohio State on the board first in this one. A bunt single by Jacob Bosiokovic and a hard groundball single up the middle by Dawson put runners on the corners, and Sergakis hit a chopper back to the mound that got away from Olasz. Bosiokovic crossed the plate to make it 1-0 on the play.

Cincinnati had some sloppy play to help the Buckeyes expand on that lead. First, a sacrifice bunt by Troy Kuhn turned into a bases loaded situation thanks to a throwing error by Olasz. Next, a would-be 5-2-3 double play off the bat of Craig Nennig ended with two runs scoring after the throw to first by catcher Woody Wallace ended up in right field.

Nennig, who landed on third base on the play, came plateward on a double down the right field line by Ryan Leffel to make it a 4-0 game.

In the fifth, Bearcat reliever Dalton Lehnen set down the first two batters he faced with ease, but Dawson and Sergakis delivered back-to-back doubles to extend the lead to 5-0.

The best opportunity Cincinnati had to put up runs came in the top of the seventh, when it loaded the bases with just one out. Kinker was able to get out of the jam, inducing a foul out and a line out to end the inning.

Ohio State tacked on more insurance in the bottom of the inning, pushing the lead out to 9-0. Redshirt freshman Cameron Ross walked Troy Montgomery, Dawson, and Sergakis to load the bases, then issued another free pass to Kuhn to force home a run.

True freshman Cam Alldred relieved and allowed all three of his inherited runners to score. Nennig singled home a run and Leffel brought one home with a sacrifice fly for his second RBI of the game, and ended up on first base thanks to catcher's interference. Tre Gantt followed that with a sacrifice fly of his own.

Ohio State plays its next six games all against conference opponents and all on the road. This weekend the team will be in Champaign for the aforementioned series with the Illini, and will travel to Purdue next weekend.

PENN STATE ANNOUNCES 'WHITE OUT' AGAINST OHIO STATE

The Nittany Lions are back at it again.

Penn State announced Tuesday a school-sponsored white out of Beaver Stadium when the Ohio State Buckeyes roll into Happy Valley on Oct. 22.

Ohio State is 2-0 under Urban Meyer in white out games in Happy Valley, including 2014's thrilling come-from-ahead double-overtime victory that ended with Joey Bosa using the broken corpse of PSU RB Akeel Lynch as a battering ram for a game-ending sack of Christian Hackenberg.

Todd McShay says Ohio State's draft class is one of the best ever in the NFL.

"Coach Meyer put a big emphasis on who can take over to be that deep threat, and that's the competition, we all want that spot. The pressure is definitely on."

-Terry McLaurin via Doug Lesmerises, Cleveland.com

Urban Meyer made it clear after the Fiesta Bowl win over Notre Dame that he wants Ohio State to throw it much more in 2016 than the team did in 2015. Fans got to see 13 "big" passing plays in the spring game this past Saturday and while it had its ups and downs during the contest, it proved that Meyer is serious about throwing it deep this year.

Of course, throwing it deep requires deep threats at wide receiver. After Saturday's game, Terry McLaurin is making a nice case for himself early on. McLaurin hauled in a couple of passes that he broke for 40+ yard gains - including a touchdown - but did drop a few balls here and there.

If the Buckeyes want to air it out, they'll need their receivers to be able to grab just about everything thrown their way. In addition to McLaurin, Torrance Gibson and Parris Campbell also provided some highlights, while Austin Mack nearly hauled in a deep pass but eventually fell to the turf. Gibson had an opportunity of his own that he probably should have brought down but escaped the young receiver. There's plenty of room for improvement for the receiving core and they'll have all summer and fall to get ready for the upcoming season.

ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay on #OhioState's 2016 draft class: "It’s one of the best classes of all time."

— Bill Rabinowitz (@brdispatch) April 19, 2016

ESPN's Todd McShay made quite a statement on Tuesday about Ohio State's 2016 draft class, calling it one of the best draft classes of all time. That's pretty heavy praise coming from someone that has covered the NFL draft for a large portion of his career with ESPN. McShay currently projects four Buckeyes to be drafted in the top 20, which would certainly be a tremendous accomplishment for Urban Meyer's program. With names like Joey Bosa, Ezekiel Elliott, Taylor Decker, Darron Lee, Michael Thomas, Vonn Bell, Braxton Miller, Jalin Marshall, and Tyvis Powell, there's plenty of talent to choose from on Ohio State's draft class alone.

There's plenty of examples of college teams with excellent draft classes to be drafted into the NFL, but Ohio State's certainly makes the claim to be one of the best. Some of the more dominant teams in the past couple of decades have similar cases too, such as those impressive Miami Hurricanes teams back in the early 2000s with players like Ed Reed, Andre Johnson, Sean Taylor, Kellen Winslow Jr., Jonathan Vilma, Vince Wolfork, etc. Alabama has produced a couple of epic classes as well in the past few years, but McShay's praise isn't unwarranted. He's seen those classes (as well as a couple of Ohio State classes before this one) and if he's making that claim, I'm sure he's confident they can live up to the praise.

"I'm going to work really hard to get where I need to be to be the backup at Ohio State. I know I can play here now, and I know what I need to do to be the starting quarterback and I know what I need to do to be the backup this season. I think I showed that I can play here."

- Joe Burrow via Austin Ward, ESPN

Going hand-in-hand with the previous story, to get the ball to the receivers, Ohio State's quarterbacks are focusing on improving their arm strength. Starting quarterback J.T. Barrett has heard some outside criticism in the past that his deep ball left something to be desired but in his time in Columbus, he's steadily improved in that department and is definitely more than capable at producing quality throws on deep passes. Joe Burrow, the presumed backup for Barrett this season, is taking extra steps to improve his arm strength and deep passing. Burrow will have a lot of work to do to catch himself up to speed physically this summer, but he's already been praised as a hard worker by his head coach.

Urban Meyer will need both quarterbacks to be at their best once the season comes around and if Burrow should ever need to come in for Barrett, the transition should be as simple as possible to not throw off the rhythm of the offense as a whole. Similar to when Kenny Guiton would come in for Braxton Miller in 2012 and 2013, if Burrow can have his arm and his body ready for any situation, he and the Buckeyes will be better for it.

The first domino appears set to fall in the Big Ten's next huge TV deal.

In a move that had been speculated about for several months now, according to Sports Business Journal ($), Fox is nearing a deal to secure half of the Big Ten's first tier media rights. Though the terms are reportedly still flexible, Fox is expected to receive the rights to around 25 football games and 50 basketball games it will air on both Fox and Fox Sports 1 for over $250 million per year.

The Big Ten's primary media rights deal had been with ESPN for football (totaling a billion dollars over 10 years) and CBS for basketball (six years, $72 million). They expire at the end of the 2016-17 season.

Fox already had an existing relationship with the league as they own half of the Big Ten Network. The networks' talent often cross pollenate and appear on Fox properties in addition to BTN. As part of that arrangement, Fox has also had the TV rights to the Big Ten's football championship game and has since its inception.

With the other half of the TV rights still up for grabs, expect to see ESPN and NBC in play. Sports Business Journal had previously reported it seems unlikely at this time that CBS will increase their financial stake with the league.

“nihil sub sole novum”

There is “nothing new under the sun”. At least that’s the Latin translation of a Hebrew phrase from at Ecclesiastes 1:9. How does this apply to Ohio State’s Spring Game? Stay with me…

So, the Ohio State offensive line probably didn’t impress that many people with their play during the Spring Game, certainly not in terms of running game and pass protection performance. This is not surprising because:

  • The rosters are typically “split”: the pool of offensive linemen are assigned to each squad, regardless if they were a starter on the previous year’s team. There is no “No. 1 offensive unit” taking the field. The five linemen on the field at any given time may not be on the field together again for the rest of their careers at Ohio State.
  • The two returning starters from last year’s squad, Pat Elflein and Billy Price did not suit up for the game. So, aside from the position group being split between the two squads, the two returning starters from last season did not play. Since, I feel, that competent offensive line play is (mostly) dependent on player communication and familiarity with one another, not having an experienced player on either squad hampered the overall performance. Yes, these players that did line up next to one another probably did have quite a few practice reps together, but they probably missed the “glue” of having a starter beside you.
  • Early in the season, it’s not unusual for defenses to be ahead of offenses. By “ahead”, I mean “executing your assignments” at a player/position group level. Although defensive players have their formation assignments/calls, defense is by nature more instinctual than offensive play. There is a certain / significant amount of time that is required to develop the timing / choreography / communication that leads to efficient offensive play.

So, don’t ever get your hopes up for blistering offensive performances at Spring Games. With this year’s team? They have until September 3rd to figure it out…

Ohio State's rising young stars showed flashes but have a ways to go yet.

It is not easy to grade an offense during a spring game, but Ohio State did show a couple of new wrinkles in theirs, which only confirms its evolution from 2015 to 2016.

No longer do they have NFL-ready wide receivers, the most complete running back in the nation or one of the best left tackles in the nation. However, they have an abundance of young talent that is ready to explode. The Buckeye offense is going to beat opposing defenses with tempo, speed and making defenders miss after the catch.

Let's take a look at the tape.

Torrance Gibson

The 6'4, 205 lb former quarterback, turned wideout, finished with a solid statline of six receptions for 50 yards and two touchdowns. Words to describe Gibson's performance on Saturday would be inconsistent, raw and potential. His intermediate route running was raw and his hands were inconsistent, yet he flashed with the ball in his hands and he unconventionally made plays. Gibson has the skillset to eventually become great at Ohio State, but let him grow as a pure receiver before crowning him the next great perimeter playmaker.

Barrett said it best when describing the Florida native, "TG has hot and cold days. Some days he's hot and catching everything, other days he can't catch a cold. ... That's the thing, at Ohio State, you can't be on and off. If you're on and off you're not gonna play. You have to be on all the time."

Exhibit A: Gibson is at the top of the screen. His opposing cornerback is coming on a corner blitz and now
Gibson is the "hot" receiver, meaning quarterback Joe Burrow will be looking his way quickly, as he will be open until the safety replaces the corner.

Screenshot_041816_081107_PM.0.jpg

Below, this is an extremely lazy 5-yard hitch. Gibson is uncovered, with the safety roughly 7-yards away. Rather than making a sharp cut towards the ball, Gibson rounded off the route and does not have his hands ready for Burrow's strike.

Screenshot_041816_081545_PM.0.jpg

Because Gibson did not attack the football with his hands away from his body to secure the catch, the ball fell incomplete. If Gibson ran a crisp route, got his hands out in front of him and made the easy catch, he would have had a chance at making the oncoming defender miss to make a huge play. The defensive coaching staff put Gibson in a place to succeed, but his lack of concentration and attention to detail failed him.

Screenshot_041816_081811_PM.0.jpg

Exhibit B: Burrow connected with Gibson on a fade ball from 18 yards out. Burrow lofted a perfect pass to the corner of the endzone, where Gibson displayed nice concentration and caught the ball over his shoulder for the score. However, the Plantation (FL) American Heritage product needed to do a better job of utilizing his 6'4" frame and his 35-inch vertical jump to go up and high point the football. If he were going up against a more physical, veteran cornerback with better ball skills, the ball would have most likely been contested and fallen to the turf.

Screenshot_041816_090543_PM.0.jpg

Instead of getting his hands up to high point the football, Gibson allowed the ball to fall into his torso to make the catch. Cornerback Joshua Norwood was right there, but he does not have the field awareness, nor the ball skills to chop down on Gibson's arms to make a play. You want to see a player of Gibson's size and leaping ability to find the ball and use his wingspan to attack the football.

Coach Meyer sees the potential, but he knows how raw Gibson truly is, "(He's) got a long way to go," Coach Meyer said of Gibson. "He's a freak. But he's gotta go get the ball. He's 6-foot-4, whatever he is, and he's got a 35-inch vertical jump, and we're going to teach him how to use that thing. He's a very good young man."

Screenshot_041816_090823_PM.0.jpg

Mike Weber

Weber entered the spring game neck-and-neck with senior Bri'onte Dunn and he took advantage of Dunn's absence by showing off his elite attributes and more. Weber was known as a smaller, muscle-bound power runner, but he showed quickness, power and hands out of the backfield. Weber did not win the job on Saturday, but he showed a bunch of positives that will only help him in the long run.

Exhibit A: The Detroit native is more of a complete back than most thought. Here is his first catch as a Buckeye, and it is not an easy one. Weber is running a swing pattern, looking back at the quarterback and snags the ball over his head with defenders making a beeline for him. If Weber can make a catch like this on a consistent basis, he will become a three-down running back.

Screenshot_041816_073326_PM.0.jpg

Exhibit B: Weber's most impressive run on the day showed a great blend of balance, strength and quickness. He bounced outside, broke a Chris Worley tackle, cut back off-balanced and made a nice gain on the play.

Other offensive notes

  • With the loss of numerous offensive stars and a few key linemen, tempo and playcalling will be key to the success of this offense. They no longer have a veteran running back, such as Carlos Hyde or Ezekiel Elliott to lean on. The tempo was impressive and it will be vital to keep the opponent on their heels and tire them out, rather than the ground-and-pound of 2013-2015.
  • By now, everyone knows the story of Marcus Baugh and it looks like he will now be able to shine as the number one tight end, after playing very well as the number two blocking tight end last season. Baugh looks slimmer this season and got open on a couple of 5-yard outs and hitches. For the first time in his career, he was used in the slot and out wide, rather than just as an inline tight end. With the young, inexperienced perimeter playmakers, this could be the season where the tight end is spotlighted in the offense. It would not surprise me if Baugh finished top two on the team in receptions.
  • One player I mentioned before the game was true freshman Austin Mack, who has already gotten his black stripe removed. He had a drop on a catchable deep ball but he made two nice catches in traffic, with a cornerback glued to his hip no less. One has to love his natural ability and fluid route running though.
  • As I mentioned earlier, Burrow showed great touch on his deep balls. He had the touchdown to Gibson, where he dropped it in the bucket, and he had another beauty to Terry McLaurin. Burrow is only one hit away from seeing the field, but after his performance on Saturday, Burrow should have injected some confidence into Buckeye fans, if his number were to be called.
  • McLaurin displayed his speed, as he got behind the defense with ease. Parris Campbell also got behind the defense and showed the ability to make defenders miss. These two are key players who have been in the offense longer than the majority of the young wideouts and both will be expected to contribute early-on.

Urban Meyer and the Ohio State Buckeyes are constantly looking to add to the already top-rated recruiting class.

Ohio State and Maryland are neck and neck for a four-star DE

Ohio State has brought in some of the best DE's in the country under Urban Meyer. The Buckeye football head coach has has developed them into game-changing players who are now playing in the NFL, or soon will be.

Meyer and assistant coach Larry Johnson will hope to see this trend continue with Chase Young (Hyattsville, Md. / DeMatha). Viewed as the No. 4 rated Weak-Side DE in the 2017 recruiting class, according to 247Sports Composite ratings, Young has expressed mutual interest in the Buckeyes. He took a two-day visit to Columbus at the start of the month, but Meyer will need to continue to make contact with Young throughout his recruitment because if he chooses to spurn the Buckeyes, they will likely have to play against him for the next three to four years.

It was reported yesterday that both Ohio State and Maryland "stand out to Young." Most would think that this would bode well for the Buckeyes, and it does, however, Young is from Maryland and told SBNation that he won't choose one school over the other just because of wins and losses.

There is still plenty of time left in Young's recruitment, and he holds offers from most of the top programs in the country, so anything can theoretically happen. It would be a huge pick-up for the Buckeyes to land one of the top 100 players in his class as he would be joining four-stars DT's Haskell Garrett and Jerron Cage on the defensive line in the '17 class.

Elite OT announces Ohio State offer

Jackson Carman (Fairfield, Ohio / Fairfield) is a name that may sound familiar to those who follow Ohio State football recruiting. The four-star OT was reportedly offered a scholarship from Ohio State late last year. However, yesterday, the top 20 overall player of the 2018 recruiting class officially announced the offer over Twitter.

Words can't expressed how thankful I am to have received my 9th offer from The Ohio State University ! ⚪ #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/Ns2kGDNgyR

— Jackson Carman (@Jackson_Carman) April 18, 2016

Despite being only a sophomore in high school, Carman holds offers from some of the best schools in the country. It is difficult to grade players this young, so the fact that the 6-foot-6, 305 pound tackle is already viewed as a four and five prospect by most recruiting databases, speaks volumes to his potential.

Ohio State should have an advantage recruiting Carman, as he lives less than two hours away from the school's campus. Meyer has made it a priority to recruit players from in-state high schools, so expect the staff to get him on campus sooner rather than later.

Chase Hounshell to transfer from Notre Dame to Ohio State

Current Notre Dame Fighting Irish student-athlete Chase Hounshell announced his decision to transfer to the Buckeyes after he graduates this semester. Hounshell, who was originally recruited as a DE and switched to TE, will provide Ohio State with depth at one of the few positions with little experience.

I can't thank ND enough but I am excited to announce I will be transferring to THE Ohio State University! Go Bucks! pic.twitter.com/cVR5YQ2P3t

— Chase Hounshell (@chasehounshell) April 18, 2016

Roster spots for next season are running low, but Hounshell will be a preferred walk-on and therefore, will not count against the Buckeyes scholarship count.

Hounshell has multiple connections to Ohio State, the first being he is a Mentor, Ohio native. Hounshell also built a relationship with Meyer during his original recruitment process. He was once committed to Meyer during his time at Florida before signing his letter of intent with Notre Dame.

Tight End is an interesting position for Ohio State this year. Marcus Baugh all but solidified the starting spot at the position in last weekend's spring game and the Buckeyes have two incoming freshmen in Jake Hausmann and Luke Farrell. Look for Hounshell to provide blocking and experience at the position, while the two true freshmen learn to play up to the level of Big Ten football.

Let's make sure Braxton gets drafted by the Bengals so we can see this happen, like, once a week.

Leave it to Braxton Miller to make throwing out the first pitch at a baseball game even more fun than it would normally be. Typically, a celebrity guest who makes an appearance to toss out a ceremonial first pitch will step out wearing the jersey of the team playing with their own name on the back, wave for the crowd, proceed to gently toss a ball high and away (unless you're Ronald Reagan, then you throw two pitches) and move on. Braxton chose to make his pitch a little more fun, however.

Let's run down the list of things that made this so awesome.

-On the way out to the mound, Miller pulled off a spin move. You know, kinda like this one.

-He threw the pitch while Hang On Sloopy played throughout the stadium.

-He brought his son out with him.

-Before the pitch, he wore a signed Pete Rose jersey.

-He proceeded to play catch afterwards with one of the only players in baseball who can probably match his athleticism, in Billy Hamilton.

-He did this all while wearing a cabana hat.

-And most importantly, we actually got to watch Braxton Miller throw a ball for just the second time since 2013.

LGHL Urban Meyer says Cardale Jones can succeed in the NFL with the right coaching staff

Jones' relationship with the staff of whatever team drafts him, will be the difference between his success and failure.

"It's going to be dictated by the team that takes him, the amount of patience and the relationship he develops with the quarterback coach."

- Urban Meyer via Marla Ridenour of the Akron Beacon Journal

Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones is surely giving many NFL teams sleepless nights, with his limited game tape and colorful personality, his ability to have success at the next level is widely debated.

Urban Meyer recently spoke with the Akron Beacon Journal, and spoke in detail about the maturation of a man that once claimed he wasn't at Ohio State "to play school" and that the team and situation he is put in will dictate his success as an NFL player. The head coach noted that Jones is very much a relationship guy, and that the bond with his quarterbacks coach and other staff is vital to his performance on the field.

Meyer specifically noted Jones having a hard time adjusting when former quarterbacks coach Tom Herman left for University of Houston after their Championship season, and that for the large quarterback, discipline could be where he succeeds or fails.

"Whoever drafts him will have to have a little bit of patience," Meyer said, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. "The unfortunate thing in the NFL: there's not a whole lot of patience."

Meyer ranked Jones' size as a 10 and his accuracy and football knowledge an 8 out of 10. Jones has been getting some extra help ahead of the NFL Draft, working out on the west coast with George Whitfield Jr. and is focused on his mechanics and fundamentals.

"Miller grew up in Springfield. He also attended a Reds game with the Buckeyes in 2015 when they were honored for winning the national championship."

- David Jablonski, Dayton Daily News

Ohio State's quarterback turned receiver will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Great American Ball Park, Monday at 7:10 p.m. before the Cincinnati Reds take on the Colorado Rockies.

This may be Miller's second time visiting GABP -- the first being in 2015 following the National Championship win --, but this will be his first time taking the mound. The former quarterback shouldn't have any problem making it to plate, but just how accurate will he be?

Miller isn't the only NFL-bound Buckeye to take the mound for the Reds, Columbus-native Darron Lee -- also a former high school quarterback -- will try his hand at the ceremonial pitch on Wednesday before the 12:35 p.m. game against the Rockies.

"Running backs aren't supposed to be taken at the top of the first round, the current rule holds, but Elliott's versatility and supreme talent suggest that he's worth ignoring the rules altogether."

- Bill Barnwell, ESPN

There are some standard practices when it comes to the NFL Draft, but it seems like every year there is at least one team that is willing to buck the trend for that rare exception of a player. Barnwell at ESPN argues that this year's exception is the Buckeye running back, Ezekiel Elliott.

Barnwell describes Elliott as, "the athletic, powerful, short-on-weaknesses running back who has drawn comparisons to Adrian Peterson."

The long held belief has been to avoid using high first round picks on running backs, with Todd Gurley going at No. 10 overall in 2015, surprising quite a few experts. Elliott's versatility and "supreme talent" could cause teams to clamor their way to the top of the draft board to try and snag the block-happy, do-everything back.

With running backs having considerably shorter careers than at other positions, a lot more is riding on teams to decipher between potential booms and/or busts heading into the draft. If Elliott ends up being the next Adrian Peterson, whatever team he lands with will consider it a win; if the young back follows the career of Trent Richardson, however, the future will look a lot less bright.

"Saturday, more people gathered to watch an Ohio State practice than there were in total attendance for every Akron home game..."

- Jason Kirk, SB Nation

Not only did Ohio State break the all-time attendance record for a spring game at any university in the country, ever(!), but they also account for four of the top ten attendances for a spring game in history.

The Urban Meyer era, also ushered in a new environment in the spring, one that doesn't consider a Saturday in April a mere scrimmage, but rather one that illicit a game-day experience each and every time the football team takes the field in Ohio Stadium.

Ohio State holds the top three spots in all-time attendance numbers, from years 2009, 2015 and 2016, but also holds the No. 10 spot with 81,112, from Meyer's first year as head coach, 2012. As far as rivalries go, Alabama holds four spots, No.s 5 thru 8, but Michigan has never had over 80,000 people attend their spring game.
