What if all 67 Ohio State first round picks were eligible for this year's NFL Draft?

Ezekiel Elliott is must see TV at all times. The same guy that tickled the Sugar Bowl president also "salmoned" Urban Meyer, and most recently Elliott took his entertaining self to Bristol to tell the world how he saw the first 10 picks of the NFL Draft shaping up.

This most recent display was so beautiful to see. A first round with one Ohio State Buckeye after another coming off the board. Scarlet and gray everywhere. What if ... this was possible?

Look, I'm as tired of mock drafts as you are. I've seen Joey Bosa go from the consensus number one overall pick to potentially falling to the Chicago Bears at number 11. It's going to be very exciting to watch the likes of Bosa, Elliott, Darron Lee, Taylor Decker and hopefully another Buckeye or two hear their name called in the first round; I'm just ready for it to actually happen and tired of the buildup at this point.

So let's make things a bit more interesting in the ever evolving world of mock drafts. In Ohio State's storied history they have produced 67 first round picks. While some continued to find success at the professional level, others faded and had their names lost over time.

Imagine, somewhere deep inside the Ohio State utopia that is Land-Grant Holy Land, a 2016 one-round NFL Draft, with the only possible selections being the 67 Ohio State first round picks at the time of their declaration.

That's right, NFL success be damned, let's find out how this year's NFL draft would turn out if it was 100 percent Buckeyes themed.

1. Los Angeles Rams: Quarterback Art Schlichter

The new franchise in Los Angeles snags the only Buckeye quarterback to ever be drafted in the first round. Schlichter upon being drafted, fiddles with his phone for a few seconds, grins, and happily becomes the new face of the Los Angeles Rams.

2. Philadelphia Eagles: Running back Eddie George

With many once pegging Elliott to the Eagles in boring real mock drafts, the bell cow Eddie George makes sense here with OSU lacking first round worthy quarterbacks. Sorry, Carson Wentz.

3. San Diego: Offensive Tackle Orlando Pace

Just like what may happen in real life, the nearly unanimous top prospect falls to the Chargers at number three thanks to the Los Angeles trade. The Heisman finalist Pace could possibly make Philip Rivers happy for once, until they both realize they could be playing in Los Angeles.

4. Dallas Cowboys: Defensive Tackle Dan Wilkinson

During a heated debate in the Cowboys' war room, Stephen Jones tackles Jerry Jones attempting to sneak an Eddie George draft card to Roger Goodell. Upon tying up Jerry, the Cowboys continue their recent surprising run of smart picks with the selection of Dan ‘Big Daddy' Wilkinson. A slight fall for the 1994 number one overall pick, but the 6'4, 340 lb Wilkinson will undoubtedly make his presence felt wherever he goes.

5. Jacksonville Jaguars: Cornerback Shawn Springs

Did someone say lockdown corner?

6. Baltimore: Linebacker Tom Cousineau

Best player available as usual for Baltimore, as they grab the 1979 number one overall pick. While Cousineau's NFL success was limited, he was traded for O.J. Simpson, then later for Jim Kelly. That has to count for something, right?

7. San Francisco 49ers: Linebacker A.J. Hawk

In-his-prime A.J. Hawk and Navarro Bowman together is a scary thought.

8. Cleveland Browns: Defensive End Vernon Gholston

Ohio State's single season sack leader with 14, Gholston goes to the Browns as a can't miss pass rush prospect ready to turn things around in Cleveland. The lesson of this pick is that even imaginary mock drafts don't like the Browns. But hey, at least Gholston took out the three most important mid-2000s Wolverines on the same play that one time:

9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Offensive Tackle Chris Ward

The former number four overall pick will help protect Jameis Winston's blindside for years to come.

10. New York Giants: Wide Receiver David Boston

Odell Beckham Jr., you thought bumping heads with Josh Norman was cool? Meet David Boston:

11. Chicago Bears: Linebacker Ryan Shazier

If you don't pay much attention to the NFL, just know that the early returns on Shazier are *very good* and he looks to be every bit the prototype NFL linebacker everyone thought he would be.

12. New Orleans: Offensive Guard John Hicks

There used to be a time where offensive guards went third overall in drafts. Specifically, 1974, when the two time All-American (and second place Heisman finisher!) went to the New York Giants to play a short NFL career.

13. Miami Dolphins: Running back/cornerback Howard Cassady

The 1955 Heisman winner, Howard "Hopalong" Cassady played both running back and cornerback at Ohio State, making him the perfect match for a Dolphins team needing all of the above.

14. Oakland Raider: Linebacker Andy Katzenmoyer

A big jump up from his real draft spot of 28, Katzenmoyer never got to see his NFL dreams play out for the New England Patriots due to a neck injury. But here in this mock draft, Katzenmoyer goes to Oakland to play out a long and successful NFL career.

15. Tennessee Titans: Offensive Tackle Korey Stringer

RIP to the beast whose tragic death in Viking training camp rightfully ended the idiotic "water is for the weak" phase of football.

16. Detroit Lions: Cornerback Nate Clements

At one point the highest paid defensive player ever.

17. Atlanta Falcons: Tight End Rickey Dudley

Dudley may have been born 10 years too soon, as this athletic tight end would be BFFs with Matt Ryan and the pass happy Falcons.

18. Indianapolis Colts: Wide Receiver Joey Galloway

Joey, meet Andrew Luck. Andrew, meet Joey Galloway.

19. Buffalo Bills: Defensive End Will Smith

RIP to one of the most crucial member of the 2002 National Champion winning Buckeyes. If you haven't checked out Saints coach Sean Payton's remarks on Smith, you should.

20. New York Jets: Linebacker Randy Gradishar

The player who Woody Hayes called "The best linebacker I ever coached" gets to play with one of the best defensive lines in football.

21. Washington Football Team: Safety Jack Tatum

Take a look at the play below and you'll see just one example of why Tatum is the best safety to ever play at Ohio State

22. Houston Texans: Cornerback Malcolm Jenkins

With Jenkins still regularly making plays on Fall Sundays, I wouldn't bank on a scheme or team change making Jenkins any less successful.

23. Minnesota Vikings: Wide Receiver Terry Glenn

You know who needs a deep threat? Teddy Bridgewater.

24. Cincinnati Bengals: Wide Receiver Ted Ginn Jr.

If Ginn has a few more good years left in him, it's going to be awfully hard to dismiss him as anything less than one of the better Ohio State receivers ever.

25. Pittsburgh Steelers: Safety Donte Whitner

Hitner falls to 25th in this draft, but the dude still almost legally changed his last name to a pun so I'm sure he'll figure things out.

26. Seattle Seahawks: Cornerback Antoine Winfield

Just like how Eli Apple would be a great fit in Seattle this year, Antoine Winfield ... well okay he actually got cut by Seattle in 2013 to end his 14 year NFL career, but 27 career interceptions are still more than enough to squeeze into the most loaded first round of all time.

27. Green Bay Packers: Offensive Tackle Jim Lachey

A 10 year career highlighted by three pro bowls, the 1984 first team All-American Lachey could help Aaron Rodgers throw less Hail Marys this year.

28. Kansas City: Cornerback Ahmed Plummer

By this point you've realized Ohio State has consistently produced high quality cornerbacks for years, and Plummer is no exception.

29. Arizona Cardinals: Center Nick Mangold

Best player available kind of pick. Mangold's first round selection by the Jets has more than paid off.

30. Carolina Panthers: Cornerback Bradley Roby

The Panthers already have enough Buckeyes on the offensive side of the ball, so Roby will help even things out.

31. Denver Broncos: Running back Archie Griffin

Who else could it be?

32. New England Patriots: lol j/k

Apparently Michigan doesn't like to teach their students the effects of cold on air pressure.

The NFL Draft is right around the corner and over the next few days, the staff here at The Buckeye Battle Cry want to share with you our favorite Buckeye Moments from the draft eligible players from the Ohio State program.

Today, we start with Jalin Marshall — the freshman phenom turned starting receiver who surprised Buckeye fans by jumping to the NFL after his sophomore season. The Middletown native had 39 receptions as a freshman — the second most in program history behind Cris Carter’s 41 in 1984.

Here are five top moments during Marshall’s Ohio State career.

5. November 9th, 2015 — The One-Handed Pop Pass vs. Michigan State

This play didn’t lead to a win for Ohio State, but it showed the playmaking ability of Jalin Marshall in crunch time. Tied late in the third quarter, in a game where offense was more valuable than Alaskan gold, Marshall capped off the first momentous drive of the second half with a beautiful one-handed catch on the pop pass from J.T. Barrett on 1st & Goal from inside the 10 yard line.

It’s one of the many catches that showed off Marshall’s athletic ability in the clutch.

4. January 1st, 2015 — “Two for 26” vs. Alabama

Jalin Marshall’s play in the 2015 Sugar Bowl might be the most underrated performance in the first championship run of the College Football Playoff Era. No, Marshall didn’t burn any type with highlight-reel plays.

Yet, it was his two catches late in the first half that gave his team momentum to get back in the ballgame against Alabama. After a horrible first quarter, Ohio State bounced back, scoring their first touchdown of the evening, after a 12-play, 71 yard drive was capped off on an Ezekiel Elliott touchdown run.

The score cut Ohio State’s deficit to 21-13, but more importantly, it gave the Buckeyes momentum throughout the rest of the second half.

Marshall had two 26 yard catches on the drive — both coming on third and long — to help keep the offense moving.

He also played a key role in the trick-play touchdown from Evan Spencer to Mike Thomas. Marshall was the decoy who received the pitch from Barrett and reversed the ball to Spencer, who made it a one point ballgame with his touchdown pass to Michael Thomas.

3. January 13, 2015 — “The Third 26” vs. Oregon in National Championshp

He might not of had the statistical game that makes you an immortal among the greats of college football, but there’s no doubt that Jalin Marshall showed up for Ohio State’s title win over Oregon.

Marshall had five catches for 55 yards. None bigger than his grab on the sidelines that helped stage an early touchdown for Ohio State, after struggling defensively on the first drive of the game.

His punt return after Oregon’s ensuing drive, is also a site to see, and helped set up a short-field drive. Four plays later, the Buckeyes would take the lead for good on a Nick Vannett touchdown pass from the goal line.

2. November 18th, 2015 — “The Catch in Coverage” vs. Michigan

You want to talk about big moments and stepping up to the plate? Ohio State went into the locker room looking for answers offensively in the final game of the regular season against their arch rivals, after losing their first game in conference play in the Urban Meyer era.

The Buckeyes found themselves up three to start the third quarter, after Michigan scored 10 straight points to end the first half. Marshall came out of the locker room with a message on the first drive.

If you’re going to try to stop me, you’re literally going to have to hold me down.

The Wolverines would only score three points in the second half. While the Ohio State offense built on the momentum of Marshall’s scoring strike — scoring three touchdowns on back-to-back-to-back possessions.

1. November 22nd, 2014– “The Marshall Plan” vs. Indiana

Four touchdowns in a little more than 17 minutes.

That’s the on-field legacy that will forever we remembered as Jalin Marshall’s Buckeye Moment.

After fumbling the ball twice against Minnesota the week before, Marshall and his teammates found themselves in a dogfight late in the third quarter. The Buckeyes were clinging on to a 14-13 lead and combined with Indiana for six straight drives ending in punts.

In just one play, running back Tevin Coleman ended the drought for the Hoosiers, scampering 90 yards and giving them the lead midway through the third.

After punting on the following offensive drive, Marshall ended any anxiety with a 54-yard punt return for the ages. He followed that up with three of the most beautiful plays in his Buckeye career.

We give a lot of credit to players in their growth heading into the championship run late in 2014. One player that doesn’t get enough credit is Jalin Marshall, who literally put the team on his shoulders for a whole Saturday afternoon.

What are your favorite Jalin Marshall moments? Share your thoughts below and stay tuned for more in the Ohio State Moments series throughout the week leading to the NFL Draft.

Here’s a look at Ohio State in the last 10 NFL drafts
Tom Dienhart, BTN.com Senior Writer via Big Ten Network

Prolific. There is no other way to describe Ohio State’s performance in the last 10 NFL drafts. It’s a proverbial football factory in Columbus. In all, the Buckeyes have had 54 picks, including 13 first-round selections. In 2006, Ohio State was off-the-charts productive with five first-round picks. It takes some schools decades to have five total first-rounders. The Buckeyes have had no fewer than three selections in any draft since 2006. Linebackers (13) and defensive backs (12) had been the most popular positions. Ohio State will add to this impressive total in year’s draft with what figures to be a

The Spartans played host to one of the Buckeyes verbal pledges over the weekend.

If you don't follow recruiting one thing you should know is things don't always go as planned. After recently being asked to take a greyshirt offer from Ohio State, longtime Buckeye commit Todd Sibley (Akron, Ohio / Archbishop Hoban) is starting to hit the road to see what other college programs have to offer.

An all-state running back, and high school teammate of fellow OSU commit Danny Clark at Akron Archbishop Hoban, Sibley made the trek to East Lansing, Mich. to see what the Spartans of Michigan State are working with during their spring game on Saturday afternoon.

Committing early, Sibley didn't receive 30 scholarship offers like some recruits, but is one of the top running backs in the Midwest. With MSU and more programs surely to contact him in the near future, he is left to make the difficult decision to attend his dream school or go elsewhere to chase his NFL aspirations.

You might find yourself asking why did Ohio State ask Sibley to Greyshirt in the first place? One word: room. The 2017 recruiting class is filling up rather quickly, and with the Buckeyes sitting pretty with numerous top rated soon-to-be seniors, it left the coaching staff to make what was in no doubt a tough choice and ask Sibley to wait to officially join the Buckeye family.

While plenty of schools could come calling, some might have moved on. Before his commitment to Ohio State last April, Sibley held scholarship offers from the likes of Kentucky and Michigan. Since then, both have received pledges from highly sought after running backs.

With recruiting news starting to heat up, stay with Land-Grant Holy Land with the latest in the world of Ohio State recruiting.

Buckeyes offer elite receiver

If you want to be a powerhouse football program these days you always have to look towards the future. That is exactly what the Ohio State coaching staff has been doing as of late. Still trying to lock down top 2017 recruits, Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes have dished out scholarship offers to numerous standout 2018 prospects recently.

After giving Jahan Dotson a chance to sport the Scarlet and Gray on Thursday, Ohio State turned around and gave another soon-to-be junior wide out a scholarship just one day later. Receiving his offer from the Buckeyes on Friday, four-star prospect Jalen Hall (Los Angeles / Hawkins) adds OSU to his long list of potential landing spots.

Just got invited to join the #Zone6 family. Thanks to the Ohio State Staff for the offer #1st&TEN #HawkinsFootball pic.twitter.com/cXw8DuNyOE

— Jalen Hall (@FutureOfFig) April 22, 2016

Considered the top wide receiver, and seventh overall prospect in the 2018 class, according to 247Sports, Hall has his fair share of college programs currently pursuing his talents. Ohio State now joins the likes of USC, Auburn, California, Florida, Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma on the hunt for the 6-foot-3, 185-pound Los Angeles native.

With two seasons left on the high school level, Hall has already put together an impressive prep career. During his career at Hawkins High School he has accounted for well over 2,000 yards receiving and 18 touchdowns for the Hawks.

2018 QB wants OSU scholarship

When you battle for national championships, recruits take notice. After recently hearing from the Ohio State coaching staff, one class of 2018 prospect is hoping to land a chance to play for the Buckeyes. Quarterback, and longtime Tennessee lean Emory Jones (Franklin, Ga. / Heard County) told Rivals.com that he held off potentially verbally committing to the Vols during their spring game after hearing from Ohio State, his dream school.

Yet to earn an a scholarship or visit OSU, Jones is just starting the recruiting process with the Buckeyes, but is definitely intrigued with what they have to offer. See what the four-star talent had to say about Ohio State, and much more, below:

After Sunday’s round, they should be smiling.

The Big Ten Tournament is this weekend. Here’s recap of round 1. Here is Recap of round 2.

As a refresher, the participating players participating were: Will Grimmer, Tee-k Kelly, Clark Engle, Josh Wick and Grant Weaver. This has been the core lineup for coaches Moseley and Smith for most of the season.

3rd Round

The Buckeyes got a solid team performance to improve their standing during the final round. By the end of the round, the team score of 283 (-5) and moved them up a position to 8th place. Their round was 13 strokes better than Saturday and was the 2nd best round of the day. That’s pretty good closing speed.

The Buckeyes were led by Clark Engle 70 (-2) and Josh Wick 70 (-2). Tee-K Kelly 71 (-1) and Will Grimmer 72 (E) rounded out the team score. Grant Weaver shot an 80 (+8).

The Buckeyes, teeing off on #10, raced out to a team score of -5 through their first 9 holes. had a very solid team score of +2 on their opening 9 holes. On their back nine, they couldn’t sustain anything against par, but closing birdies by Kelly and Wick were absolutely clutch.

Player scores, below:

Big Ten Rd 1 Rd 2 Rd 3 Total To Par
Team 298 296 283 877 13
Will Grimmer 70 73 72 215 -1
Tee-k Kelly 76 71 71 218 2
Clark Engle 79 77 70 226 10
Josh Wick 74 75 70 219 3
Grant Weaver 78 81 80 239 23
To Par 10 8 -5 13

Will
thrilled his opening nine holes with 4 birdies / 2 bogeys, then settled in for a +2 back nine for a very good even par round.

Tee-K put together 4 birdies in his solid round of -1, 71. This was a big-time round.

Josh was -2 after 9 holes, but peppered his back 9 with 4 birdies/4 bogies for probably one of the most interesting stretch of nine holes you’ll ever see. Josh’s 6 birdies led the team on the day.

Clark put together two 9’s of 2 birdies/6 pars/1 bogey for a very solid round of -2, 70. He birdied 2 of his last 4 holes to finish strongly.

Grant had a good front 9 of +1, but things went south on his back nine. A triple bogey on his 12th hole pretty much took him out of team play for the round.

This was a solid final round; I’m sure the team and the coaches were happy with the outcome. This was a strong finish that should give the team some confidence going into the NCAA Regionals in three weeks.

The Buckeyes put together a round of 19 birdies, 51 pars, 17 bogeys, 2 double bogeys and 1 triple bogey.

Over three rounds, Ohio State played the par 3’s to an average of 3.30, 18 over par, ranking T-9th. They played the par 4’s to an average of 4,20, +30 to par, ranking them 7th. They played the par 5’s to an average of 4.82, -11 to par, ranking them T-4th.

For the event, Ohio State had 158 pars, ranking them T-5th and 46 birdies, ranking them T-6th.

Up next is the NCAA Regional qualifiers in mid-May.

Go Buckeyes!

Behind strong defensive play, the Buckeyes came within two of defeating one of the top teams in the country.

In a rare Sunday night game, the Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team lost a close match against No. 5 Maryland in College Park, 10-8. After a relatively even first half, a prolonged scoring drought by the Buckeyes and some quick goals by the Terps gave Maryland a lead which Ohio State could not overtake.

Maryland opened up scoring early with a goal just 2:30 into the game. Despite Ohio State tying things up with 9:09 remaining in the first quarter on a goal by midfielder Jarret Hassfeld--his first goal of the season--Maryland followed up with another score on its next position to go up 2-1. Ohio State tied things up once more as Austin Shanks added a goal with 5:58 remaining in the quarter. Midfielder Johnny Pearson added another goal to give the Buckeyes their first lead of the game, but Maryland answered once more to tie the game at 3-3. Attackman Carter Brown, however, would add one more score for the Buckeyes with just 17 seconds left in the quarter to give Ohio State the lead at the changeover.

Ohio State opened the second quarter in dominant fashion on strong play by goalie Tom Carey, with the defense holding Maryland scoreless for nearly 10 minutes into the quarter as the Buckeyes built out a two-goal lead on a score by midfielder Trevor Hodgins. However, that’s when things began to fall apart on attack for the Buckeyes, who would not score again in the half despite three additional goals by Maryland, giving the Terps a 6-5 halftime edge.

The defense began to show signs of weakness early in the third quarter as Maryland scored four more goals before Brown could once again find the back of the net to bring the score to 10-6 in favor of Maryland, ending a seven-goal scoring streak by the Terps and a nearly 25-minute scoring drought for the Buckeyes.

Despite the four-goal deficit, the Buckeyes came out strong in the fourth quarter, closing the gap to two on goals by Hassfeld and Brown. The defense rebooted once more as well, holding the Terps scoreless for the quarter. Maryland’s lead, however, proved too much to overcome in the final quarter.

Brown led Ohio State in scoring with three goals in the game, with the team taking 26 shots to Maryland’s 30. Carey recorded eight saves on the day, while midfielder Jake Withers went 11-8 on faceoffs in the match.

Maryland, who sits at the top of conference lacrosse rankings, earned a share of the Big Ten regular season title with the win. The Buckeyes have now fallen to 6-8 on the season and 1-3 in the Big Ten. Ohio State is scheduled to face Rutgers in Columbus in the team’s final regular season game next week before the Big Ten Tournament begins in May.

The Big Ten Championship is this week. The background and 1st & 2nd round play of the Buckeyes is here and here.

As a refresher: the six players participating for the Buckeyes are: Katja Pogacar, Jessica Porvasnik, Jaclyn Lee, Rio Watanabe, Niki Schroeder and Zoe-Beth Brake.

I’ll be damned, they did it. They chased down Northwestern to earn a tie for 1st place – their 3rd consecutive Big Ten Championship! The Wildcats went deep on their own, shooting a team score of -6. But, Ohio State exceeded even Saturday’s performance by shooting -8 to bring both teams to a score of 852; -12 to par for the three rounds.

3rd Round

This was high drama all day long. First, Ohio State and Northwestern were paired together, so you always had your main adversary in your sights. They trailed Northwestern by 2 strokes entering the round and for most of the day could not gain ground on them. However, the Buckeyes chased down the Wildcats simply by playing better golf at the end. Over the last half hour (or so) of play, Ohio State was -1 to par while Northwestern was +3. This is the fine edge; 54 holes of golf and a championship comes down to two holes at the end…

Buckeyes had sub-par rounds by Katja Pogacar (again), Jessica Porvasnik (again) and Rio Watanabe (again). Niki Schroeder and Zoe-Beth Brake shot very good rounds and by any measure Jaclyn Lee’s round was solid. They were relentless on Sunday and it paid off with a championship. This was another outstanding round of team golf.

They shot a team score of 280 (-8), a 1 stroke improvement from Saturday. The Buckeyes were led by Katja Pogacar 67 (-5), Rio Watanabe 69 (-3) and Jessica Porvasnik 71 (-1). Niki Schroeder 73 (+1), Zoe-Beth Brake 73 (+1) and Jaclyn Lee (75 (+3) all shot superb rounds.

Niki started strongly, with 2 birdies in her first 6 holes. A couple of late round bogeys bumped her score to 73. A fine first go-round in post-conference play.

Jessica was even par through 4 holes, recorded 1 birdie and 13 pars to close out her round of -1, 71.

Rio birdied her first 2 holes(again), then birdied 2 of her last 3 holes for her 70.

Katja birdied her first hole (always a good start) and birdied #7/#8 for a front 9, 33, -3. She birdied 2 of her last 3 holes to close with a back 9 34, -1. This was simply outstanding tournament golf.

Jaclyn had a ton of pars (15) enroute to her solid round of 75. Another good post-season performance.

Zoe-Beth was +2 on her front side, then carded two birdies for a back nine -1 for a solid, needed round of 73.

Below is the Buckeye scoring:

Big Ten Rd 1 Rd 2 Rd 3 Total
Team 291 281 280 852
Katja Pogacar 69 72 67 208
Jessica Porvasnik 71 70 71 212
Jaclyn Lee 76 74 75 225
Rio Watanabe 75 70 69 214
Niki Schroeder 77 69 73 219
Zoe-Beth Brake 79 76 73 228
291 281 280 852
3 -7 -8 -12

The Buckeyes put together a round comprised of 19 birdies, 74 pars and 15 bogeys. This was their second consecutive round scoring no score higher than bogey. Think about it; 216 holes and nothing worse than bogeys.

Through three rounds, Ohio State played the par 3’s fairly well, averaging a 3.07, +5 to par, ranking them 2nd. They played the par 4’s very well, to an average of 4,11, +19 to par, ranking them T-2nd. They played the par 5’s to an average of 4.81, -14 to par, ranking them 2nd. That is consistently a high level of golf.

Over three rounds, Ohio State had 223 pars, ranking them 1st, and 47 birdies, ranking them T-3rd.

Next up, the NCAA Regionals.

Go Buckeyes!

The Buckeyes fell short on Sunday against the Illini, losing the series.

A late rally for Ohio State baseball ultimately came up short on Sunday as the Buckeyes lost to Illinois by a score of 5-3. With the win, the Illini claimed the series victory, and pulled to .500 in Big Ten play.

A home run by Ohio State's Craig Nennig to lead off the ninth inning against Illinois closer Nick Blackburn pulled the Buckeyes to within two. A single by Jacob Bosiokovic and a double by Jalen Washington put the tying run in scoring position with one out, but Blackburn buckled down and retired Troy Montgomery and Ryan Leffel to end it.

Ohio State is now 5-7 in conference games, and faces an uphill battle to earn a berth in the Big Ten tournament.

The Illini's freshman starter Cole Bellair kept the Ohio State bats very quiet, as he yielded just a run on five hits in 7.1 innings of work. The right-hander improved to 2-2 while walking one and striking out four.

Buckeye left fielder Ronnie Dawson continued to swing a hot bat, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, and two RBIs on the day. Dawson extended his hitting streak to nine games and reached-safely streak to 17.

Starter Adam Niemeyer allowed five earned runs on six hits in 6.2 innings, walking two and striking out six. A two-run first inning and a three-run seventh proved to be Niemeyer's undoing, as he fell to 3-2 on the year.

Illinois wasted no time in scoring against Niemeyer. Leadoff man Jack Yalowitz singled and Doran Turchin followed that right up with an RBI triple to right center. Next up, Jason Goldstein sent a groundball out to Craig Nennig at shortstop and Turchin came home for the early 2-0 lead.

Dawson gave the Buckeyes their first run of the day with his solo shot to left in the top of the sixth, which made it a 2-1 game at the time.

In the bottom of the seventh, though, the Illini broke it open. A bases loaded double by Yalowitz brought three runs plateward and ended Niemeyer's day.

It was Dawson who again came through for Ohio State in the eighth, driving in Montgomery with a double off Illinois reliever J.D. Nielsen that short-hopped the wall in left-center.

There is no midweek game for the Buckeyes this week. They'll be on the field again on Friday in West Lafayette to kick off a conference series with Purdue.

LGHL What if Ohio State's depth chart was determined by recruiting rankings?

What if Ohio State's depth chart was determined by recruiting rankings?

If Urban Meyer and the other coaches were just lazy and started the most talented recruits, what would that depth chart look like?

With spring practice, the record-setting spring game, and "The Land of the Wolves" in full effect, the depth chart heading in to the summer got a little clearer.

Sure, some summer enrollees may shake things up and there are still some notable battles that will continue throughout summer practice and fall camp, but the depth chart at a few key position groups was mostly clarified.

With so many holes in the lineup due to a potentially record-setting NFL Draft class, the spring was critically important for a number of new starters. Nowhere was that more true than on the offensive line, where it looks like true freshman early enrollee Michael Jordan has found himself in front of likely starter Demetrius Knox (who is a former blue-chipper himself). At linebacker, Chris Worley appears to have held off Jerome Baker (for now) at WILL, while Dante Booker has slid right in to the SAM slot formerly manned by Joshua Perry. And in the secondary, where only Gareon Conley returns to a starting role, former three-star safety Malik Hooker looks to be the best of the group.

On offense, Bri’onte Dunn and Mike Weber are locked in an "OR" fight right now for the top spot (though Weber is thought to be trending up), and the backup quarterback spot belongs to Joe Burrow, at least until Dwayne Haskins arrives on campus this summer.

The two-deep may be taking shape for the summer. But how would the depth chart look if the coaches just immediately put the most talented recruits in to the starting roles? I took a look at the Buckeyes roster by position group, ranking the top players in to a two-deep to see how it compares with the penciled-in two-deep heading in to the summer. I looked at the 247 Composite scores for the recruit rankings below.

Cornerback

1 Marshon Lattimore, So. (.9729) Eric Glover-Williams, So. (.9499)
2 Gareon Conley, Jr. (.9322) Denzel Ward, So. (.9021)

It looks like the second-stringers talent-wise could actually be the starting lineup in the fall. According to various reports, the staff would love for Marshon Lattimore to claim the spot, but injuries have slowed his career down so far. Denzel Ward, reportedly the fastest player on the team, would likely be the top option opposite Conley right now.

Safeties

1 Damon Webb, So. (.982) Cam Burrows, Jr. (.9719)
2 Erick Smith, Jr. (.9665) Malik Hooker, So. (.8858)

The only mostly sure thing right now is that Malik Hooker will be one of the two starting safeties -- but there was a huge gap between him and the other three safeties in the two-deep according to high school recruiting rankings. So is this another diamond in the rough like Tyvis Powell?

Defensive End

1 Nick Bosa, Fr. (.9965) Jonathon Cooper, Fr. (.9801)
2 Jalyn Holmes, So. (.9622) Sam Hubbard, So. (.9230)

Thought to be one of the most talent-rich parts of the team despite losing Joey Bosa and Adolphus Washington, incoming freshmen Nick Bosa and Jonathon Cooper bump the projected starters at defensive end. Last year's sack leader Tyquan Lewis didn't make the top four, but his projected counterpart Sam Hubbard, and likely rotational player Jalyn Holmes did. The question for the summer and fall will likely be whether these two five-star recruits can get up to speed to hit the rotation by the beginning of the season.

Defensive Tackle

1 Jashon Cornell, Fr. (.9530) Dre'Mont Jones, Fr. (.9350)
2 Michael Hill, Jr. (.9240) Malik Barrow, Fr. (.8890)

In contrast to defensive end, defensive tackle doesn't quite have the same star power. Jason Cornell moved inside, which gives this group a significant boost, but the two-deep would still be full of players who haven't seen much, if any, playing time. Tracy Sprinkle was a former three-star, while his counterpart Michael Hill is the highest-rated non-freshman in this two-deep.

Linebacker

1 Raekwon McMillian, Jr. (.9894) Justin Hilliard, Fr. (.9817) Dante Booker, Jr. (.9721)
2 Jerome Baker, So. (.9646) Keandre Jones, Fr. (.9540) Nick Conner, Fr. (.9116)

If any group has completely changed since Urban Meyer took over (when Zach Boren moved from fullback to linebacker!), it's this group of linebackers. Easily one of the most talent-rich two-deeps on the team, the linebackers are extremely talented and mostly veterans. Two likely starters post-spring appear in this two-deep too, while the likely third starter at WILL, Chris Worley, is in a battle to hold off Jerome Baker. Incoming elite recruit Keandre Jones continues the trend of blue-chippers who will have to wait their turn at linebacker.

Offensive Line

1 Jamarco Jones, Jr. (.9696) Evan Lisle, Jr. (.9646) Demetrius Knox, So. (.9518) Isaiah Prince, So. (.9488) Matthew Burrell, Fr. (.9484)
2 Michael Jordan, Fr. (.9389) Malcom Pridgeon, Jr. (.9328) Tyler Gerald, Fr. (.9277) Billy Price, Jr. (.9155) Kyle Trout, So. (.9010)

The offensive line had to be almost entirely rebuilt apart from Price and Elflein -- but Elflein didn't even crack the top-ten most talented offensive line recruits for this two-deep. Obviously this group of ten doesn't specify the position, but it's an extremely talented group nonetheless (Ohio State has over ten players who were four-star or higher on the offensive line!). Notable is that Michael Jordan, a second-stringer here, looks at least neck-and-neck with the much more experienced Demetrius Knox for a guard spot. The two likely starting tackles, Isaiah Prince and Jamarco Jones, were also among the top four most talented linemen in high school.

Running Back

1 Mike Weber, Fr. (.9584)
2 Bri'onte Dunn, Sr. (.9537)

It's close in real life and close in the recruiting rankings, but Mike Weber edges out the veteran Bri'onte Dunn here for the starting running back spot. Can either player handle the feature back role? Especially with J.T. Barrett likely challenging for the most rushing yards next season (along with H-Backs stealing carries) the division of touches for the ground game will be interesting to watch.

Tight End

1 Marcus Baugh, Jr. (.9597)
2 Jake Hausmann, Fr. (.9416)

Ohio State has also begun to really stockpile tight ends. With two on the roster and two more coming in (not to mention the recent walk-on graduate transfer from Notre Dame), the Buckeyes look to be in good shape. Urban Meyer and Tim Hinton and given Buckeye tight end recruits plenty to NFL Draft success to entice them to commit (Stoneburner, Herman, and Vannett), but can Baugh live up to his recruiting hype?

Quarterback

1 Dwayne Haskins, Fr. (.9550)
2 J.T. Barrett, Jr. (.9348)

Sorry, J.T., but this two-deep would have you demoted in favor of incoming freshman Dwayne Haskins. Funny enough, Haskins might be one of the most talented quarterbacks Urban has ever recruited.

Wide Receiver

1 Demario McCall, Fr. (.9761) Curtis Samuel, Jr. (.9695) Dontre Wilson, Sr. (.9685)
2 Johnnie Dixon, Jr. (.9639) Austin Mack, Fr. (.9613) Torrance Gibson, Fr. (.9584)

Do you think Urban has had much success selling recruits on "being the next Percy Harvin?" The top three wide receivers are all H-Backs (I lumped them with the other wide receivers), showing that that promise sells more than the actual past production from Buckeye H-Backs. Here's to hoping that Curtis Samuel makes this the year when we really see the Ohio State offense incorporate these speedsters into the system. Otherwise, there's a lot of exciting young talent out there for the Buckeyes to use on the outside -- highlighted by freshman Austin Mack and redshirt freshman Torrance Gibson.

The Big Ten Tournament is this weekend. Here’s recap of round 1.

As a refresher, the participating players participating were: Will Grimmer, Tee-k Kelly, Clark Engle, Josh Wick and Grant Weaver. This has been the core lineup for coaches Moseley and Smith for most of the season.

2nd Round

The Buckeyes got solid performances from Will Grimmer and Josh Wick. The youth played well in the opening round. By the end of the round, the team score of 296 (+8) and maintained their position in 9th place. They are 5 strokes behind Northwestern (might be able to catch them) and 8 strokes in front of Indiana (not like to be caught from behind).

The Buckeyes were led by Tee-K Kelly 71 (-1) and Will Grimmer 73 (+1). Josh Wick 75 (+3) and Clark Engle 77 (+5) finished the team scoring. Grant Weaver shot an 81 (+9).

The Buckeyes, teeing off on #10, had a very solid team score of +2 on their opening 9 holes. However, on their back nine, 1 more double bogey and 2 fewer birdies bumped up the back 9 total. See, it doesn’t take much, possibly 3 bad swings/bounces to have an impact on a round. It happens.

Player scores, below:

Big Ten Rd 1 Rd 2 Rd 3 Total
Team 298 296 0 594
Will Grimmer 70 73 0 143
Tee-k Kelly 76 71 0 147
Clark Engle 79 77 0 156
Josh Wick 74 75 0 149
Grant Weaver 78 81 0 159
To Par 10 8 0 0

Tee-K birdied his 6th and 7th holes to go to -2 for his first nine holes, stumbled with double bogey on his 12th hole. He closed out strong with a birdie on his last hole to cap a closing 6 hole stretch of -1. Great golf.

Will was kind of “OK” at +2 through his first 5 holes. Then, wow. He played the final 13 holes in -1 for a very strong finish. Nice work.

Josh carded 4 birdies, but 2 doubles dulled his round. He did birdie 2 of his last three holes, so hopefully some momentum was built for Sunday.

Clark strung together a total of 14 pars for the day, but his 2 double bogeys really stalled his round.

Grant got into trouble on his opening nine holes, shooting +7. However, he did respond with 3 birdies on the back nine to shoot +2 for that span. For the second consecutive round, he did finish with a birdie on his last hole.

This actually wasn’t that bad of a round. They were probably only 3-4 swings from having very solid round and being 1-2 spots higher. They are positioned to make a move up 2 positions, but they need to avoid the “big numbers”. Not profound, but factual. Tee-K, Will and Josh are putting together a good showing. They need a 4th player to step up on Sunday.

The Buckeyes put together a round of 16 birdies (5 more than 1st round), 49 pars, 17 bogeys and 8 double bogeys.

Over two rounds, Ohio State played the par 3’s to an average of 3.30, 12 over par, ranking T-9th. They played the par 4’s to an average of 4,28, +28 to par, ranking them 9th. They played the par 5’s to an average of 4.85, -6 to par, ranking them T-3rd.

Ohio State had 105 pars, ranking them 10th and 27 birdies.

On to the 3rd and final round…

Go Buckeyes!

You’d be all smiles, too, if you did what the Buckeyes did on Saturday.

The Big Ten Championship is this week. The background and 1st round play of the Buckeyes is here.

As a refresher: the six players participating for the Buckeyes are: Katja Pogacar, Jessica Porvasnik, Jaclyn Lee, Rio Watanabe, Niki Schroeder and Zoe-Beth Brake.

So, to help set the context of this recap: In my write-up of the Lady Buckeye Spring Invitational, I expressed this: “if the Buckeyes are within a few strokes of you entering the final round… they will hunt you down.”

On the 4ooth anniversary of his death, I’ll let someone far more versed than I, William Shakespeare, explain what happened on Saturday.

Shall in these confines with a monarch’s voice
Cry ‘Havoc,’ and let slip the dogs of war;

  • Julius Caesar Act 3 Scene 1, 270-275

2nd Round

The “dogs of war” shot a -7 score; the best of the round by 5 strokes and moved up 7 positions to 2nd place, trailing Northwestern by 2 strokes. Buckeyes had sub-par rounds by Katja Pogacar, Jessica Porvasnik, Niki Schroeder and Rio Watanabe. They absolutely chased down the field Saturday. This was an outstanding round of team golf.

They shot a team score of 281 (-7), a 10 stroke improvement from Friday, and moved them up 7 positions to 2nd place. The Buckeyes were led by Niki Schroeder 69 (-3), Jessica Porvasnik 70 (-2), Rio Watanabe 70 (-2) and Katja Pogacar 72 (E). Jaclyn Lee 74 (+2) and Zoe-Beth Brake 76 (+4) rounded our the scoring.

Niki built on her closing 1st round momentum to have an even par front 9. Her 3 birdies/6 pars on her back nine powered her -3 score.

Jessica was -2 through 12 holes, then combined 2 birdies/2 bogeys enroute to her round of 70.

Rio birdied her first 2 holes, then birdied 2 of her last 3 holes for her 70.

Katja was -2 through 12 holes, then played her closing 6 holes in +2 for her even par round.

Jaclyn had a mid-round stretch of six holes where she was +4, then played her closing 7 holes in -2. This was a nice closing stretch that should give her confidence going into her final round.

Zoe-Beth was even par through 7 holes. A mid-round stretch of +5 stalled her round, but she finished strongly by scoring 1 in her closing five holes.

Below is the Buckeye scoring:

Big Ten Rd 1 Rd 2 Rd 3 Total
Team 291 281 0 572
Katja Pogacar 69 72 0 141
Jessica Porvasnik 71 70 0 141
Jaclyn Lee 76 74 0 150
Rio Watanabe 75 70 0 145
Niki Schroeder 77 69 0 146
Zoe-Beth Brake 79 76 0 155
291 281 0 572
3 -7 0 0

Through two rounds, Ohio State played the par 3’s fairly well, averaging a 3.08, +4 to par, ranking them 2nd. They played the par 4’s to an average of 4,16, +19 to par, ranking them 6th. They played the par 5’s to an average of 4.81, -9 to par, ranking them 2nd. They improved their scoring on the par 4’s and par 5’s in the 2nd round.

The Buckeyes put together a round comprised of 19 birdies (double round 1), 71 pars and 18 bogeys. They cleaned up their play with no score higher than bogey.

Over two rounds, Ohio State had 149 pars, ranking them 1st, and 28 birdies, ranking them T-10th.

After yesterday’s round, I thought the Buckeyes had a reasonable chance to move from 9th into 3rd place. Late in the round they were in solo 2nd place and held that position. An impressive round on “moving day”. They trail Northwestern by 2 strokes. Rest easy, Wildcats… For Sunday’s final round, more William Shakespeare: “..the game is afoot..”

Now, on to the 3rd and final round…

Go Buckeyes!
