The quirkiness was on full display throughout the 2016 Big Ten Baseball Tournament on Wednesday-Sunday at TD Ameritrade Park, home of the College World Series. Among the many highlights, there were the expected dugout antics and videobombing of coach interviews, plus some entertaining outtakes. Vote: #BestCatch of 2016 Big Ten Baseball Tournament
Brent Yarina, BTN.com Senior Editor via Big Ten Network

BTN announcers Kevin Kugler and Danan Hughes debated the best catch of the 2016 Big Ten Baseball Tournament midway through the Ohio State-Michigan State semifinal Sunday morning. The two catches discussed were Minnesota CF Dan Motl and Michigan State RF Dan Chmielewski’s all-out diving grabs. Both were extremely impressive plays, the first of the over-the-head variety and the second of the diving-near-the-foul-line variety. The debate made its way to Twitter, to the point that we decided to leave it up to the Big Ten fans. We synced the plays (watch them above) and provided a hashtag (#BestCatch), and you picked

The Buckeyes will play for a title this afternoon against Iowa in Omaha after handling the Spartans.

Ohio State baseball has a shot at a championship. The Buckeyes defeated Michigan State by a score of 7-3 early Sunday afternoon to advance to the Big Ten tournament title game against Iowa later in the afternoon.

As has been the case all tournament long, Ohio State executed well defensively and on the bases, got timely hitting, and capitalized on miscues by its opponents to pick a victory. The Buckeyes will now have a shot at revenge on the Hawkeyes, who came back from a 4-0 deficit in the ninth inning on Thursday night to claim a 5-4 win over the scarlet and gray.

The team's performance in the Big Ten tournament may also have solidified its NCAA tournament chances regardless of what happens the rest of the day.

Yes, I've got the Buckeyes as the top Big Ten at-large team on the board. Ahead of Minnesota and Nebraska for me now https://t.co/lujDdIdRGI

— Aaron Fitt (@aaronfitt) May 29, 2016

As was the case in Saturday night's 3-2 win over the Spartans, Ohio State's bullpen was terrific. Kyle Michalik and Seth Kinker combined to toss 6.1 innings of shutout ball, running their total to 12 scoreless in the two games.

Craig Nennig, Ronnie Dawson, Troy Montgomery, and Tre Gantt all contributed multiple hits in the effort as well.

Ohio State got to Michigan State starter Joe Mockbee right out of the gate, scoring twice in the top of the first inning. Nick Sergakis led off with a walk and was followed by back-to-back singles to left from Nennig and Dawson. Troy Kuhn and Montgomery followed with an RBI groundout and a well-executed RBI safety squeeze to plate the runs.

In the third, the Buckeyes strung together three straight two-out singles by Dawson, Kuhn, and Montgomery to add another run to the board and extend the lead to 3-0. Michigan State brought on Walter Borkovich from the bullpen to end the threat.

The Spartans came back in the bottom of the third to tie the game and chase Buckeye starter Austin Woodby. A leadoff walk by Kory Young and a single by Brandon Hughes set up Dan Durkin for a two-run double down the right field line. Durkin came around to score on a double by Dan Chmielewski to knot things up 3-3. Ohio State reliever Michalik came on to end the inning.

The Buckeyes used movement on the basepaths to grab the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth against Dakota Mekkes. After Gantt singled and Sergakis walked, the two took off on a double steal. The throw to third from Michigan State catcher Matt Byars sailed into left field, and Gantt trotted home with ease for a 4-3 lead.

More small ball and another error by the Spartans in the top of the seventh gave Ohio State another run. Montgomery singled and Bosiokovic walked to open the inning, and Washington squared around to bunt them over. He laid it down and Mekkes tried to cut down the lead runner at third, but the throw got away and Montgomery came plateward.

T7 | THROWING ERROR. Two-run lead. #GoBucks

Mekkes then intentionally walked L. Grant Davis to load the bases with nobody out and Michigan State went to Jake Lowery out of the bullpen. Lowery's first pitch went to the backstop and Bosiokovic scored with ease for a 6-3 lead. Gantt sent a fly ball to center field after that to bring Washington home and extend the lead to four.

It was all the Buckeyes needed, as they navigated the losers bracket of the tournament for ta chance at the program's ninth tourney title. The game against the Hawkeyes is scheduled to get started at approximately 2:20 p.m. ET and will air live on Big Ten Network.

The 2016 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships are played at the same venue as the NCAA Women’s Championships last week; Eugene Country Club in Eugene, OR. The course will play to 7,014 yards and a par of 70. It has a rating of 74.2 and a slope of 136. By contrast, my “home” course plays to 6,638 yards, a par of 72, a rating of 72.0 and a slope of 123. The Eugene CC is one of the tougher courses the men will play this season; if you watched any of the NCAA Women’s Championship, you’d have seen a lot of trees.

How’d He Do?

Tee-k did fairly well in the opening round. He did even better in the 2nd round. His even par (70) round moved him up 9 positions to T-24th. He blended 4 birdies / 4 bogeys with his 14 pars to get into better position to advance after Sunday’s 3rd round.

Tee-k began his round on the back 9 (hole #10) and his first couple hours were a struggle; he was +3 to par after 8 holes and needed to turn things around. He birdied his 9th hole (#18) and an hour later birdied the 528 yard par-5 4th hole to move to +1 for the round. He overcame a bogey on his 16th hole (#7) by birdieing his final two holes to get his round back to even par and +1 after two rounds. Strong finishes to both front and back 9’s may be what gets Tee-k into the final round on Monday.

What’s it Mean?

Tee-k is still in the hunt. He ended the second round in 2nd place of those who are participating as individuals. For Tee-k to advance to the Championship round, he has to be one of the top nine players not on a team that is advancing. Got it?

Entering the 3rd round, there are 23 players doing better than Tee-k and 11 players doing as well. Of these 34 players, 27 of them are on teams that have potential to advance. With those seven players and Tee-k in 2nd position of Individuals, he’s at the cut line to advance. He needs a relatively (better than a dozen or so other players) to have a chance to advance. Of course, as the 3rd round gets underway, some of the teams at the borderline will shift, so we won’t have the exact picture until Sunday evening. This is nerve-wracking stuff.

Tee-k had another pretty clean round with 4 birdies / 4 bogeys. This is his 2nd consecutive round in Eugene where he shot nothing higher than a bogey, and not many of those… He is positioning himself round. He needs another clean round with a few birdies sprinkled in. Very doable for him.

Next up; Round 3

Go Buckeyes! Go Tee-k!

Ronnie Dawson's extra innings home run extended the Buckeyes' season another day.

Ronnie Dawson provided the theatrics and Ohio State baseball survived to fight another day. In an elimination game on Saturday night at the Big Ten Tournament in Omaha, the Buckeyes outlasted Michigan State for a 3-2 win in 10 innings thanks to Dawson's 13th home run of the season.

Leading off the top of the tenth against Spartans' reliever Walter Borkovich, Dawson found a 1-0 slider to his liking and let loose.

"Your big players have to make big plays, and we got one from [Ronnie]," head coach Greg Beals said after the game.

The two teams will now play another elimination game on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. ET, with the winner advancing to the championship game against Iowa.

Because of Friday night's game against Michigan being suspended, Ohio State's pitching staff was out of turn. Adam Niemeyer threw two innings Friday, and Ryan Feltner picked up where he left off when the game resumed on Saturday afternoon. That meant senior Daulton Mosbarger took the mound against Michigan State in Saturday evening's affair.

Mosbarger gave the Buckeyes 4.1 innings in his first start of the season, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts. The lefty did not factor in the decision after giving way to Kyle Michalik. The bullpen took it from there, with Seth Kinker and Yianni Pavlopoulos combining with Michalik to throw 5.2 scoreless innings.

Ohio State got on the board first, plating a run in the second inning. Troy Montgomery and Jacob Bosiokovic singled back-to-back to lead things off and were both bunted over by Jalen Washington. Ryan Leffel followed that with an RBI groundout for the 1-0 lead.

Michigan State knotted things up in the bottom of the frame thanks to a single by Kris Simonton, a walk for Marty Bechina, a double steal, and a two-out bunt single by Kory Young.

The Spartans then grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third thanks to a leadoff single by Jordan Zimmerman, a sacrifice bunt by Dan Durkin, and RBI single by Matt Byars.

In the top of the fourth, though, the Buckeyes came right back to tie the game. Troy Kuhn singled to lead off and Montgomery beat out a bunt single before Bosiokovic bunted them both into scoring position. Washington then sent a ground ball to second to bring Kuhn in.

From there, the bullpens got involved and the chess match really got going. Both sides executed well defensively, and the game ended up going to extra innings.

That's when Dawson got a hold of one to give Ohio State the 3-2 lead.

Pavlopoulos came on in the bottom of the tenth and recorded his 14th save of the season.

Sunday's rematch will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network, as will the tournament championship, which is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. ET.

The Buckeyes beat Michigan, the weather, and the demons of another Big Ten Tournament meltdown to keep their NCAA hopes alive.

After a heartbreaking late game meltdown against Iowa yesterday, Ohio State baseball could have simply folded up and ended their season. With memories of other Big Ten Tournament collapses still fresh in their minds, and after yet another rain delay postponed a promising start, an Ohio State loss would have been understandable.

But the Buckeyes didn't let any of those things get to them. Instead, their bats rallied, and they scored early and often, clobbering Michigan 11-4, giving their computer profile yet another RPI boost, and keeping their NCAA Tournament hopes, and Big Ten Tournament championship hopes, alive.

The Buckeyes opened the day already with a 5-2 lead, thanks to their performance yesterday, before inclement weather moved the game to today. The Wolverines pulled within two runs in the 5th inning to make the score 6-4, but they wouldn't get any closer, as the Buckeye stamped out any possibly rally with gusto, grabbing three runs of their own in the 5th, and tacking on insurance runs later in the game. Every Buckeye picked up at least one hit, and Ryan Feltner was excellent on the mound for the Buckeyes, striking out 10.

Have a day, kid. #GoBucks #FELTNER pic.twitter.com/vuDPKI3kpf

— The OSU Baseball ⚾️ (@OhioState_BASE) May 28, 2016

With the win, the Buckeyes have eliminated Michigan from the Big Ten Tournament, although the Wolverines are still highly like to make the NCAA Tournament. The Buckeyes keep their Big Ten tournament hopes alive, and will face off against Michigan State at 6:30 PM Eastern tonight.

Even with another RPI boosting win, the Buckeyes probably need to do a little more damage in the Big Ten tournament in order to feel secure about grabbing an NCAA spot, despite their 40 wins. With yet another victory over Michigan, Ohio State's RPI sits at 49, which is still a little low for an at-large selection. A loss to Michigan State, (RPI 72), would send it tumbling further.

Thanks to the loss against Iowa, one more loss will send them home, so continuing their hot streak will be critical in tonight's action.

The Eugene CC is one of the tougher courses the men will play this season; if you watched any of the NCAA Women’s Championship, you’d have seen a lot of trees.

How’d He Do?

Tee-k’s round started on the 1st hole.. which he birdied. (Always a good way to begin a round). However, he didn’t help matters with three bogeys in his next five holes to finish the front 9 in a +2, 38. He righted the ship with a superb performance on his back 9. He birdied the tough 425 yard par-4 12th and parred the other eight holes for a -1, 35. His round of 71, +1 had Tee-k in the upper 20% of the contestants.

Tee-k ended the round tied (with a lot of people, 19 to be exact) in 33rd place. The leading scorers were at -3, so being 4 strokes off the pace after one round isn’t too bad.

What’s it Mean?

Tee-k is still in the hunt. He ended the round in 2nd place of those who are participating as individuals. The good news is that four strokes is not a lot of strokes to make up. The some-what good news is that Tee-k has quite a few players to pass to get to the top spot.

Tee-k had a pretty clean opening round; he had 2 birdies / 3 bogeys. The remaining 13 holes were pars. Pars are good scores, particularly in the early rounds, since it shows you have good control of your game. Any score over bogey will be hard to overcome; there is little room for error competing against talented fellow competitors.

Next up; Round 2

Go Buckeyes! Go Tee-k!

The Buckeyes squandered a great outing by John Havird and a 4-0 lead in the ninth inning, and will now fight for their season in a second game Friday night.

Not again. Those are the two words that had to be on the mind of Ohio State head coach Greg Beals and a team with nine seniors that have endured heartbreak the past two seasons in the Big Ten tournament on Friday afternoon after watching Iowa come back from a 4-0 deficit in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game, and ultimately win 5-4 in extra innings.

After a sterling performance by starter John Havird, who threw eight scoreless innings of two-hit ball, the Buckeyes' bullpen imploded. Seth Kinker, Michael Horejsei, and Yianni Pavlopoulos could not quiet the bats of a Hawkeye squad that had seen just three baserunners through the first eight innings of play, and Ohio State was dealt a serious blow.

The Buckeyes had been one of the hottest teams in the country entering the Big Ten tournament, and after Wednesday night's dismantling of Michigan, looked to be on the verge of making a statement to the NCAA tournament selection committee. That all came to a screeching halt on Friday afternoon. The team will now have to play a second game on Friday night against the Wolverines to keep their season alive.

Kinker allowed four runs on five hits in 0.2 innings of work in by far his worst appearance of the season. After Horejsei hit the only batter he faced, Pavlopoulos allowed the tying run to score before getting out of the ninth. The righty then gave up a walk, committed an error, hit a batter, and yielded a single in the 10th inning to let the winning run score.

Ohio State squandered late leads twice in last year's tournament, including one in walk-off fashion to the Hawkeyes, and two in 2014. In all, the Buckeyes have lost five games by a total of six runs in the past three conference tournaments, adding insult to this game's injury.

Iowa's Tyler Peyton, who gave up three runs on five hits in seven innings, scored the winning run on a single by Mason McCoy.

After going hitless the first time through the order against Peyton, Ohio State notched back-to-back singles with one out in the top of the fourth by Craig Nennig and Ronnie Dawson to put runners on the corners. Troy Kuhn then sent a grounder to short and beat the relay throw on the double play attempt, allowing Nennig to score.

There was some angst among Iowa's coaching staff and fans in attendance caused by Dawson's slide into second, but the umpiring crew deemed it legal, and the Buckeyes had a 1-0 lead.

In the fifth, Ohio State's bats kept it going. With one out in the inning, Jalen Washington, Ryan Leffel, and Tre Gantt each singled to load the bases. Nick Sergakis was then hit by a pitch, forcing home the second run of the day for the Buckeyes.

Nennig followed with a sacrifice fly to center that brought Leffel plateward, and it was a 3-0 Ohio State advantage.

All was quiet until the top of the ninth, when the Buckeyes added an insurance run against reliever Luke Vandermaten to make it a 4-0 ballgame. Jacob Bosiokovic and Washington both singled and Leffel moved them into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Gantt then delivered a run-scoring single, and the game seemed to be well in hand.

In the bottom of the ninth, though, Iowa came back from the dead, and Ohio State was left with those two little words: not again.

The Buckeyes will be back on the field at 10:00 p.m. ET against Michigan on Friday night. The game will air live on Big Ten Network.

Vegas odds have come out for the upcoming football season. Is Ohio State leading the way, or has the Harbaugh reign convinced the oddsmakers that the maize and blue have returned?

"Looks like Vegas will probably be as high on Michigan as the early preview mags and CFB columnists are"

The Daily Gopher

Vegas Insider has a new batch of over/under win totals going into the upcoming season. To some surprise, Michigan is leading the Big Ten with a projected 10 wins. Ohio State comes in a close second at 9.5 wins – which is basically 10 wins if you're rounding.

Reigning Big Ten Champion Michigan State opens up at 7.5 wins, while Rose Bowl participant Iowa sits at 8.5 wins as a projected total.

Here is what the rest of the Big Ten is projected to do:

For those curious, here are the rest of the leaders from the Power 5 schools:

SEC: Alabama and LSU at 10

Big 12: Oklahoma at 12(!)

Pac-12: Washington at 9 wins

ACC: Clemson at 10.5

Ezekiel Elliott to SportsDay (story by Kate Hairopoulos)

It's been almost a month since Buckeye nation found out that Ezekiel Elliott was headed to the Dallas Cowboys as the No.4 pick in the draft.

Since draft day, Zeke signed his contract and participated in OTAs – and is a reasonable candidate to be the next great Dallas Cowboy running back.

To get to the level he's gotten to, it takes parents willing to make sacrifices after sacrifices to give their child every chance to succeed. Elliott recognizes that, and is giving back to his parents.

Recently, Elliott bought his family a house in St.Louis, around the same area where he began his start as being a beast on the gridiron.

"The hard work she put in raising me and all she sacrificed, finally being able to do something for her for the first time feels really good," said Elliott, as reported by SportsDay writer Kate Hairopoulos.

As reported by Dallas Cowboys sideline reporter Kristi Scales, Elliott's contract is worth $24.956 million over four years and includes a signing bonus just north of $16 million. That's a lot of shirts he can buy – which inevitably can be converted into crop tops.

"Just from how many schools I reached out to, there were not a lot of takers,"

Ohio State finally got their schedules sorted out for the 2018 season. The Tulane Green Wave were the last team to be scheduled for 2018, and now Ohio State has a complete schedule through 2019.

"Tulane enhances & completes a non-conf. schedule in '18 that already includes Power 5 teams TCU and Oregon State." Martin Jarmond, Dep. AD

— Jerry Emig (@BuckeyeNotes) May 26, 2016

As deputy AD and scheduling mastermind Martin Jarmond said to Rabinowitz, it was "very challenging" to find a team to schedule for 2018, since the season is in the not-too-far distant future.

For coming up to Columbus from New Orleans, Tulane will receive $1.5 million for playing inside The Shoe for the first time. The AAC program features a new coach in Willie Fritz, who comes from Georgia Southern carrying a 17-7 record in the past two seasons at the helm.

With 99 days until the start of the 2016 season, football can't get here soon enough.
