LGHL Urban Meyer says relationships are more important in recruiting than camp performances

Urban Meyer says relationships are more important in recruiting than camp performances

Even with the pressure to attend additional camps, Meyer says the most important thing a recruit can do is get an endorsement from his coach.

"I don’t care what you do at camps. I want to hear your high school coach say ‘Take him.’ If I have a relationship with that high school coach like I do with these NFL coaches, guess what happens? We take him."

-Urban Meyer via Doug Samuels, Football Scoop

Even with all the hype around satellite camps this offseason, the recommendation from a high school coach is still one of the most important factor in recruiting. Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer said as much to a group of potential recruits at a camp in Columbus over the weekend, emphasizing that worrying about the 7-on-7 or which camps to attend to get noticed means missing the key point involved: achieving buy-in from the high school coach. Becoming a key contributor on the team and being selected as a captain, for example, go much further than being noticed at a satellite camp.

Meyer’s comments echo similar sentiments expressed by Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban last week, in which Saban stated that football is the only sport where the high school coach still matters. He went on to say that satellite camps, like those promoted by Michigan Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh, threaten that balance.

While parents and players alike can be distracted by which camps to attend and being visible throughout the recruiting process, Meyer’s comments emphasize the need to earn the resolute recommendation of the high school coach. While camps may only last a few days, the coach knows the player for up to four years of play, and can offer a more accurate representation of the recruit which goes much further in garnering a scholarship offer.

"He’s a project. The question is how long will this project take for QB’s coach David Lee to mold."

-Tyler Dunne, The Buffalo News

With mandatory minicamp scheduled for the Buffalo Bills this week, former Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones has a lot to prove heading into practice. The minicamp is the last chance for players to impress coaches prior to training camp, which is scheduled to begin at the end of July at St. John Fisher College, and it would seem that Jones has a long way to go. With reporters watching at one practice last week, Jones could not seem to find a rhythm, fumbling snaps from under center and tripping over his fullback on a handoff. And despite his cannon of an arm, Jones’ passing was inaccurate throughout the day.

Nonetheless, Jones has a lot of potential to develop into a strong backup for the Bills this season. He will need to focus in particular on his footwork, but also in communicating plays with his teammates, which Jones recognizes as an area of weakness.

Jones missed some practice time last week, owing to the birth of his son, Owen, in Cleveland. Head coach Rex Ryan apparently forced the decision, stating that Jones would "regret that decision for the rest of your [his] life" if Jones did not head back to Cleveland. Jones had been just minutes away from the practice facility in Buffalo when he turned around redirected back to Cleveland.

Jones is currently projected at the No. 3 spot at quarterback. During training camp, he will compete with fellow quarterbacks Tyrod Taylor, who started 14 games last season for the Bills and is the projected starter this season, andE.J. Manuel, who earned the majority of his starts in 2013 before moving to the bench behind Taylor.

"I’m predicting Ezekiel Elliott will be a breakout star from Day 1 of his NFL career. He has a perfect blend of power, agility, and elusiveness and his skill set is a complement to the rest of the Cowboys offense."

-Nate Burleson, NFL.com, via 247Sports

Despite initial questions regarding the Dallas Cowboys’ decision to draft former Ohio State Buckeyes running backEzekiel Elliott No. 4 overall in this year’s NFL Draft, doubters seem to have overcome their concerns, and are even projecting Elliott as the top breakout candidate among rookies for the upcoming NFL season. Elliott has, thus far, lived up to the pressure with a strong performance in the Cowboys minicamp, and is expected to carry his momentum into the team’s training camp scheduled to begin in late July in California. Elliott has been a workhorse throughout his career, carrying the Buckeyes to a national title in 2014, and is projected to bring the same sort of power to his professional career.

Especially given injuries to quarterback Tony Romo, the Cowboys will be relying heavily on their running game next season to keep Romo from standing too long in the pocket. The Cowboys enacted a similar gameplan with DeMarco Murray in 2014, when he led the league in rushing with 1,845 yards on 392 attempts in 16 games played.

Despite averaging 118.1 yards per game last season behind Darren McFadden, placing the Cowboys ninth in the league in average rushing yards, the organization does not see McFadden as the future franchise running back. Given multiple injuries throughout his eight-year career, McFadden has never completed an entire 16-game season, and has hit the 1,000-yard rushing mark only twice.

The Buckeyes and the Golden Hurricane will be an afternoon game on ABC.

We learned earlier today that Ohio State's opener against Bowling Green would take place on Big Ten Network at noon eastern time, and now we have learned details of the following week.

The Buckeyes will be taking on the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on September 10 at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC, according to Mark D. Rudner at BTN. This will be the first meeting between the schools, and will be played at Ohio Stadium. The Golden Hurricane finished 6-7 last season with a 3-5 record in the American Athletic Conference. They put up a good fight against Virginia Tech in the 2015 Camping World Independence Bowl, but ultimately lost 55-52.

Ohio State will be sure to utilize their games against Bowling Green and Tulsa as warmups for their big matchup against the Oklahoma Sooners in Norman on September 17. It'll be helpful with a bunch of new faces lining up on both sides of the field.

No matter what time of day this kicks off, Ohio State and Tulsa should combine for plenty of points, so go ahead and plan your schedule accordingly.

The last time the Wolverines won along Melrose Ave. was 2005, a 23-20 decision. These schools haven’t met since 2013. Here is a look at the Best of Week 11. Game of the week: Michigan at Iowa. Taking a look at what the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback will bring to Columbus.

Steve Clarkson, a well-known West Coast quarterback coach, described a then 14-year-old Tate Martell as, "If you could clone Fran Tarkenton and Brett Favre, you would have Tate Martell." Clarkson was partially correct, as Martell possesses a gamblers mentality, can fit the ball into small windows and displays the athletic ability to extend plays outside of the pocket. However, an easy (and true) on-the-field comparison for Martell would be Johnny Manziel, who is on the shorter side (6'0) like Martell (5'10.5) and also possesses those attributes.

When looking at the film of his excellent junior year campaign, where he completed 133-of-237 passes for 2,608 yards, 32 touchdowns and six interceptions, it is easy to see what makes him so great. But the Bishop Gorman signal caller's height, or lack thereof, will be an issue for him at the next level. Standing at 5'10.5 and 203 lbs, Martell is most likely done growing, which may be an issue once he is standing behind Ohio State offensive linemen who are 6'5-plus. More often than not, offensive coordinator Ed Warinner will have to move Martell out of the pocket to create clearer throwing lanes.

SB Nation's recruiting guru Bud Elliott had similar thoughts about the quarterback prospect:

"Martell is an excellent high school player who faces good competition at Bishop Gorman. He needs to be in the spread offense so that he can have wider throwing windows due to being 5'10.5". He's athletic and can extend plays. Martell's delivery is unique and helps to compensate some for his lack of height." Elliott went on to say, "As an overaged player who was very good for so long, the question of upside is worth asking. Martell may be closer to being maxed out than his peers. He is also extremely close with five-star receiver Tyjon Lindsey."

Here are some of Martell's strengths:

Throwing the ball

There's no doubt about it, Martell can sling the football. He uses his athleticism to quickly drop back and scan the field. Even if he is pressured off of his spot and has to leave the pocket, he keeps his eyes downfield to find the open man. When he makes his decision to throw the ball, he displays textbook weight distribution and balance. Martell then drives off his back foot, creating maximum power on his throw. He possesses an extremely quick, over-the-top release, similar to Drew Brees, that is key to have at his height. He has an extremely live arm, as the ball flies off his hand and is typically very accurate.

Screenshot_061216_114514_PM.0.jpg

Below, you can see Martell's ability to drop back, find the open receiver, utilize his quick release and fire an accurate football for the touchdown. The only issue that is seen from this angle is his long stride coming from his front leg, which makes him about 1-2 inches shorter at the release. His beautiful over-the-top throwing motion is almost negated by the long stride. Once he gets to Columbus or if he works with a good quarterback coach, that should be an easy fix for the young quarterback.

6-13-2016_10-23-39_AM.0.jpg

Here, Martell did a great job of throwing to the spot where the wideout was going to be, rather than at the wideout. He cocked his arm back when the receiver got out of his break, which showed his instincts and ability to fit the ball into a tight window, where only his receiver could catch the ball.

Martell has also shown off his great arm strength and touch on the deep ball. He found the open receiver, put some nice touch on the ball and accurately placed the ball over the receiver's shoulder, in stride for six.

Running the ball

Martell's feet are why he will succeed in Urban Meyer's spread offense. At Bishop Gormon, he already has experience running the read option, which is a staple of Meyer's power running spread offense. Below, he already shows the ability to read the read defender and make the correct decision. He sees the defender crashing down the line of scrimmage towards the running back, so he pulls the football and takes it on his own to the end zone. Martell showed off his great arm strength and touch on the deep ball. He found the open receiver, put some nice touch on the ball and accurately placed the ball over the receiver's shoulder, in stride for six.

Screenshot_061216_105301_PM.0.jpg

Screenshot_061216_105530_PM.0.jpg

Where Martell emulates Manziel is his ability to improvise in the pocket and create more time for his receivers to get open. When Martell is on the run, he does a great job of keeping his eyes downfield, squaring his shoulders and finding the open receiver. Young, athletic quarterbacks are typically quick to tuck the ball and run (young Braxton Miller), but Martell has supreme confidence in his arm and the poise to make plays on the run.

The clip below is a good example of Martell alleviating pressure, keeping his eyes downfield, squaring his shoulders and hitting the open receiver for a touchdown.

Overall, Martell is an excellent dual-threat quarterback prospect who brings numerous positive attributes to the table; however, he has one major physical limitation (size), which could be a problem at the collegiate level. One has got to love Martell's athleticism, coupled with his throwing ability, which makes him an intriguing prospect. He will bring competitiveness, toughness and true dual-threat attributes to the quarterback room. Tate Martell's athleticism and Dwayne Haskins' throwing ability will create major problems for opposing defenses in the future.

We now have a time for the first game in the 'Shoe.

We already knew that the Ohio State Buckeyes football season was going to kick off on September 3 at Ohio Stadium against the Bowling Green Falcons, but we now have a time for the first game of the season.

In 80 days, the Buckeyes and Falcons will kick off at noon eastern time. The game will air on the Big Ten Network. The two teams have faced each other four other times, with the Buckeyes winning all four previous contests. The last time the two faced was in 2006, when the Buckeyes won by a 35-7 margin under Jim Tressel.

The Falcons went 10-4 last season, with two wins against Big Ten opponents on the road in Maryland and Purdue. The Buckeyes will look to keep their win streak against in-state teams alive, with their last loss coming back in 1921 against Oberlin College.

We still have a lot of offseason left, but this helps the season feel that much closer.

Go Bucks.

The Buckeyes didn't just land a commitment, they also played host to a stud linebacker.

And then there was 14.

Coming into the weekend sitting on 13 commitments, the Buckeyes closed it out by adding another quarterback to its class of 2017. Looking to bring in a signal caller alongside Danny Clark (Massillon, OH / Archbishop Hoban), Ohio State finally landed their man in standout dual-threat QB Tate Martell (Las Vegas, NV / Bishop Gorman) on Sunday evening.

I'm excited to announce that I
have officially committed to
THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY! pic.twitter.com/fWpD7hcZ13

— Tate Martell (@TheTateMartell) June 13, 2016

Visiting his (now) future home for the second time in recent months, Martell, the former Texas A&M commit, gave Urban Meyer and crew his pledge while in Columbus on another unofficial visit. California, Colorado, UCLA and USC were among the other programs he considered before once again shutting his recruitment down. Just at the beginning of June, there were seven schools vying the top dual-threat QB in the country.

Over the last two seasons, the future Buckeye quarterback has put together some eye popping numbers. Not the biggest prospect at only 5'10, and 205ish pounds, Martell makes up for it with great touch and athletic ability. Since his sophomore season, he has accounted for 5,145 yards and 72 touchdowns through the air, while only throwing a total of eight interceptions. A dual-threat option, he keeps defense on their toes by making plays not just with his arm, but his legs. Proving that time and time again, he has rushed for another 1,037 yards, and another 14 scores since 2014.

Martell doesn't just give the Buckeyes another great player in their 2017 class, but a fantastic recruiter. Taking part in numerous camps across the country and building bonds with prospects through social media, the U.S. Army All-American hasn't just became a fan favorite, but is also held in high regards by some of the most sought after recruits on the high school level.

With Trevon Grimes (Fort Lauderdale, FL / St. Thomas Aquinas), Tyjon Lindsey (Corona, CA / Centennial)a good friend of Martell's – and other elite receivers currently considering Ohio State, look for even more play makers to give the Buckeyes a strong look before signing on the dotted line with a college program.

Want to know more about Martell, and his Ohio State commitment? Land-Grant Holy Land has your back.

Hines visits Columbus

A long list of recruits took part in football camps or unofficial visits over the weekend. While many talented players were on hand, a couple of the top high school prospect in the class of 2017 made the trek to Ohio to see what Urban Meyer and the Ohio State Buckeyes are building in Columbus.

Anthony Hines (Plano, TX / Plano East), a four-star linebacker, has scholarship offers from well over 80 programs and was one of the recruits that had the opportunity to see what it would be like suiting up in the Scarlet and Gray. Hines, who stands around 6'2, and 225 pounds, was once thought as a dream for Ohio State, but with OSU turning up their recruiting effort, and his visit to OSU, things look to be heating up between the pair.

With spots filling up quickly, Antjuan Simmons (Ann Arbor, MI / Pioneer) and potentially Brendon White (Powell, OH / Olentangy Liberty) playing linebacker, will Hines end up in Columbus or will the Buckeyes turn elsewhere?

I guess we'll all have to wait and see.

Wilson names top 10

When you're a five-star prospect you usually have your fair share of scholarship offers. That was certainly the case for defensive tackle Marvin Wilson (Bellaire, TX / Episcopal). Racking up over 25 college opportunities throughout the process, the 2017 standout is now down to 10 programs.

Sorry for the wait 1️⃣0️⃣ .... pic.twitter.com/BToGn1z879

— HOLLYWOOD MARV (@RDMW6) June 12, 2016

While some of the top programs in the country are now on the outside looking in, Ohio State, Ole Miss, USC, UCLA, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Alabama, Florida State, LS, and Texas still have a chance in adding the Bellaire native.

Ohio State will soon have their chance to show Wilson, the top defensive tackle and third overall prospect in the class of 2017, around campus according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. The 6'4, and well over 300-pound lineman will reportedly be in Columbus next weekend to see OSU for himself.

Quick Hits

  • Ohio State offered class of 2018 prospect Houston Griffith (Chicago / Mount Carmel) on Friday. Griffith, a four-star rated cornerback, is the son of former NFL player turned analyst Howard Griffith. A solid player in his own right, the younger Griffith now holds a offer from not just OSU, but also programs such as Florida, Florida State, Georgia, and Illinois, where his father played on the college level.

  • Griffith wasn't the only 2018 prospect to receive a scholarship from Ohio State on Friday. San Jose, California native Maurice Washington (San Jose, CA / Oak Grove) also earned an offer from the Buckeyes. OSU might be the first program to offer the four-star running back a scholarship, but won't be the last, as many schools are keeping a close eye on him after he rushed for well over 1,500 yards as a sophomore.
