As expected, Ohio State had a huge recruiting weekend after its annual Friday Night Lights camp. Commitments from Chase Young and Amir Riep add to an already impressive class for 2017, and Brian Snead got things started in the same direction for the 2018 class. Let’s see how these commitments impact the Buckeyes’ future recruiting plans and evaluate what we learned from Friday Night Lights.

The Buckeyes have been in hot pursuit of a pure pass rusher for this 2017, and they set their sights on Chase Young. Ohio State gave him the red carpet treatment every time he set foot on campus, and it obviously worked. This weekend, he gathered Urban Meyer and Larry Johnson together and let them know his intentions of coming to Columbus next fall.

— The Buckeye Nut (@TheBuckeyeNut) July 23, 2016

Young’s commitment probably puts an end to defensive end recruitment for now since he will join 2016 signees Nick Bosa and Jonathan Cooper to wreak havoc on opposing Big Ten offensive lines for the next few years. Young had recently visited Alabama, and he didn’t seem to be in a rush to make a decision. However, the conditions felt right for him, and his decision came down to “feeling at home.”

The other 2017 commitment came on Saturday in defensive back Amir Riep. Once thought to be headed north to Michigan State, Riep decided to stay at home and play for the Buckeyes. He joins Shaun Wade, Marcus Williamson, and Isaiah Pryor in a talented backfield for 2017.

2018 got started in a big way when four-star running back Brian Snead declared his intentions for the Buckeyes. Snead is currently ranked as the #17 athlete in the state of Florida and the 6th best running back in the class of 2018. Depending on how the Buckeyes finish out their 2017 class at running back, they could take two backs in 2018.

— Campaign_B6 (@snead655) July 23, 2016

Now that we have some new commitments, let’s look at the 2017 class recruitment going forward. I still see the Buckeyes taking 20-22 players in 2017, so who are the remaining guys left on the board?

Tyjon Lindsey and Trevon Grimes seem to be pretty much done to Ohio State, and they’ll both announce their decisions at the end of August. That gets us to 18. I don’t see any more quarterback recruiting, and this class won’t include a tight end. I do, however, think the Buckeyes will look to add another running back and possibly another offensive lineman if the right name pops up. At running back, the guy all fans want to see commit is Cam Akers out of Mississippi. While he was unable to make it up for Friday Night Lights, he still seems to be very high on the Buckeyes, and the coaches will chase him for as long as it takes. Offensive linemen like Trey Smith and Tony Grey are still available, but they’re longshots to end up in Columbus. Nevertheless, you can bet the coaching staff will try their hardest to find another top notch lineman to go along with Wyatt Davis, Jake Moretti, and Josh Myers. That gets us to 20.

The Buckeyes are still chasing another linebacker, and Baron Browning and Anthony Hines are the two names to watch. Browning claims Ohio State is at the top of his list, but he’s been making visits to other programs. Getting him back on campus will be key. Hines visited Ohio State back in June and came away impressed, but right now, all crystal ball predictions peg him to stay in Texas or head to Oklahoma.
0

Ohio State will probably take one more defensive back/safety to round out the class. The most likely option is Jeffrey Okudah, who’s made several trips to Ohio State. Although he didn’t make it to Columbus for the star-studded Friday Night Lights, there doesn’t seem to be much concern about him going elsewhere – all of his crystal ball predictions have been in favor of Ohio State for a long time. Though he visited Oklahoma recently and bonded with some of their commitments, I still see this one playing out in favor of the Buckeyes.
0
That gets us to 22.

Twenty-two commitments puts Ohio State 18 scholarships over the limit for the 2017 season, not considering any NFL declarations, medical hardships, or transfers. I think at least six guys will bolt for the NFL early, so that still leaves 12 players who would have to leave the program after the 2016 season in order to make room for this class.

I expect the Buckeyes to continue to chase Lamont Wade, Darnay Holmes, Jay Tufele, Donovan Peoples-Jones, and other high-quality athletes all the way until signing day, but those guys will head to other programs if there’s no room at the inn in Columbus. It’s still a long way until signing day, and – as always – things can change at the drop of a hat, but don’t worry we’ll keep you posted on everything as it happens.

Big Ten Media Days kicks off this morning in Chicago, and while the conference doesn’t run official preseason polls or predictions, that doesn’t mean there isn’t some positive buzz centering around some of Ohio State’s players.

The league announced Monday morning that Buckeyes quarterback J.T. Barrett and linebacker Raekwon McMillan were both named to the conference’s annual preseason honors list. The league doesn’t do an all-conference preseason team the way we’re accustomed to other conference’s doing.

Michigan’s lone representative, Jabrill Peppers, joins Barrett and McMillan representing the East division.

Here’s the complete 2016 preseason honors list:

EAST DIVISION

Jabrill Peppers, Jr., LB/DB, Michigan

Malik McDowell, Jr., DL, Michigan State

J.T. Barrett, Jr., QB, Ohio State

Raekwon McMillan, Jr., LB, Ohio State

Saquon Barkley, So., RB, Penn State

WEST DIVISION

C.J. Beathard, Sr., QB, Iowa

Desmond King, Sr., DB, Iowa

Justin Jackson, Jr., RB, Northwestern

Anthony Walker Jr., Jr., LB, Northwestern

Corey Clement, Sr., RB, Wisconsin

In lieu of the league doing so, the Cleveland Plain Dealer runs an unofficial media poll predicting conference standings, as well as the winner of the Big Ten Player of the Year awards. After counting up the ballots, Barrett was their preseason pick to win the Offensive Player of the Year award, and it wasn’t even especially close.

Voters were asked to give their top three candidates.

Barrett earned 34 first place votes, and 110 total votes, easily outstripping Penn State’s Saquon Barkley, who had three first place votes.

On the defensive side of the ball, Peppers was their leading vote getter.

If Ohio State is going to be successful this season, despite losing an enormous amount of talent to the NFL Draft, Barrett and McMillan will be huge reasons why. If nothing else, it’s clear they have the respect of much of the Big Ten press corps.

The Buckeyes had a weekend for the books.

While you were setting up plans for the weekend, Urban Meyer and crew had their hands full with dozens of top prospects during their annual Friday Night Lights camp.

If you took more than a few minutes to eat a cheeseburger or take a sip of lemonade you might have missed Ohio State once again dominating the recruiting trail. Don’t worry, Land-Grant Holy Land has your back. Get caught up with the weekend that was:

Buckeyes pick up 3 commitments

When you get a large group of prospects in Columbus, Ohio for a camp chances are someone will leave the Ohio State campus verbally committed to suit up for the Buckeyes.

This time was no different.

To kick off the weekend festivities for OSU, the Big Ten power locked up a pledge from not just one of top defensive ends, but prospects in the entire country. After being thought as an Ohio State lean for quite awhile, five-star standout Chase Young put all the rumors to sleep and finally jump aboard the Buckeyes class of 2017 on Friday evening.

Defensive line coach Larry Johnson adds another prize upfront. With Ohio State always looking to bring in depth across the line, the 6-foot-5, 225-pound U.S. Army All-American should be able to do just that once he arrives on campus.

Blessed with the prototypical length and speed that college coaches now search for when recruiting defensive lineman, Young had his fair share of college options on the table before deciding on OSU. Alabama, Maryland, Miami, Michigan and Michigan State were among the over 40 programs to offer him a scholarship throughout his very active recruitment.

Not long after the Buckeyes landed Young, they picked up their first class of 2018 pledge in four-star running back Brian Snead. Snead’s commitment wasn’t written in as many had Chase. Surprising some by ending his recruitment while in Columbus, the 5-foot-11, 200-pound back chose Ohio State over opportunities at Florida State and other top notch programs.

The sixth running back, and 80th overall recruit in the 2018 class, per the 247Sports Composite, Snead will now help Urban Meyer, Mark Pantoni track down elite talent to bring into fold.

One would have to believe quarterback Emory Jones (Franklin, GA / Heard County), another Friday Night Lights camper and key OSU target, will be hearing from him relatively soon.

Just when you thought the rich couldn’t get any richer, the Buckeyes weren’t done. Carrying the commitment momentum into Saturday, one of Ohio’s best announced in front of family, friends, and many others that he too will continue his playing days and education at the Ohio State University.

Letting the world know his plans from Cincinnati Colerain High School, four-star class of 2017 cornerback Amir Riep denied options at Alabama, Michigan State to attend OSU.

After securing pledges from Young and Riep, Ohio State, who is currently sitting 16 commits, puts even more pressure on SEC programs Alabama and Georgia for the top spot in the 2017 team recruiting rankings.

Will the Buckeyes recruiting success go into the week? I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Stay with Land-Grant Holy Land for the latest.

OSU dishes out new offers

You can’t commit to a program without receiving an offer first. On Friday a few recruits had their dreams turn into reality, as Ohio State handed out three scholarships to underclassmen recruits after having the chance to watch them run through drills in person during camp.

2018 defensive end Greg Emerson (Jackson, TN / North Side) and two 2019 recruits, offensive tackle Devontae Dobbs (Bellville, MI / Bellville) and defensive end Antonio Alfano (Rahway,NJ / Bergen Catholic), all walked away with a chance to play for the Buckeyes.

Blessed to receive my 14th offer From Ohio State #Buckeyes # pic.twitter.com/9x7tEWigqm

— Greg Emerson/G.mamba (@sneakerhad_greg) July 23, 2016

The 6-foot-4, 275-pound Emerson now holds offers from not just OSU, but Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Tennessee and others, while Dobbs, who could end up on either side of the ball on the next level, adds the Buckeyes alongside power five conference schools like Auburn, Michigan State, Florida and Iowa State.

Blessed to say I've received my 12th offer from the university of Ohio State. #GoBuckeyes pic.twitter.com/slLSZQYpda

— Devontae Dobbs (@Devontae_Dobbs) July 23, 2016

Just like Emerson and Dobbs, this isn’t Alfano’s first rodeo. The 6-foot-5, 255-pounder might have over two years until he signs on the dotted line with a college, but already has some solid options to choose from.

Honored and privileged to receive a scholarship offer from Ohio State!! @OhioStateFB @OhioStFootball @OhioState pic.twitter.com/jkqdPRZror

— Antonio Alfano (@Antonioalfano99) July 23, 2016

Duke, Penn State, Rutgers and Virginia Tech are just a few of the schools Ohio State find themselves up against in Alfano’s recruitment.

Only time will tell if Emerson, Dobbs or Alfano will end up with the Scarlet and Gray, but with all three on the verge of blowing up to some of the most sought after recruits in the country.

You can’t blame the Ohio State staff for shooting their shot.

Watch Urban Meyer's son tear up a high school recruiting event

Ohio State held its biggest recruiting event of the summer on Friday, and it produced a surprise star: Nate Meyer, Urban Meyer's son

Whether it's at Florida or Ohio State, Urban Meyer has always been known as a monster recruiter, and the 2017 cycle is no different. The Buckeyes already have 16 kids committed for next year's recruiting class, which currently puts them at No. 1 overall according to 247sports.com.

So yeah, the rich are only going to continue to get richer, but at a high school recruiting combine at Ohio State this weekend known simply as 'Friday Night Lights,' the focus wasn't on one of those members of the 2017 class, but instead, one in 2018. That would be Nate Meyer, and if his name sounds familiar, well, it's because he's head coach Urban Meyer's son.

Get an inside look of Friday Night Lights from the recruits themselves.

After the camp’s recent success, when you think of Friday Night Lights on the campus of Ohio State, the long list of elite talent on hand might be the first thing that comes to mind. This year proved no different.

While names like Tyjon Lindsey, Emory Jones, and others headlined the list of recruits on hand for the now annual event, a large number of prospects with college scholarship offers on the table flocked to Columbus for their chance to work alongside Urban Meyer and his staff.

Have you ever wondered what it is like to be down on the field? Land-Grant Holy Land caught up with the following Friday Night Lights campers, and had them break down their experience getting taught by some of the best in the business in the Ohio State coaching staff:

2017 ATH Markquese Bell

Hometown: Bridgeton,NJ/Bridgeton

Size: 6’3/195

Offers: Ohio State, Clemson, Michigan, Rutgers, etc.

Thoughts: “It was a great camp with great competition, and the staff was awesome.”

2017 ATH Lynn Bowden

Hometown: Youngstown/Warren G. Harding

Size: 6’1/185

Offers: Kentucky, Penn State, Indiana, West Virginia, etc.

Thoughts: “It was great. It was an awesome time. When I was competing, it was all eyes on me. That’s what stood-out. I talked to Coach Meyer himself. He said he’ll be in touch, and told me I was his guy.”

2018 LB Christopher Oats

Hometown: Cincinnati/Winton Woods

Size: 6’4/215

Offers: Ohio State, Kentucky, Michigan State, Oklahoma, etc.

Thoughts: “The Friday Night Light camp was amazing. One of the few experiences that stood-out with Urban Meyer and the staff is being coached by Coach (Luke) Fickell one-on-one.”

2017 CB Darrick Forrest

Hometown: Columbus/Walnut Ridge

Size: 6’0/170

Offers: Ball State, Bowling Green, Miami (OH), Ohio, etc.

Thoughts: “The camp was great to me. I got a lot of reps and work in. I was surprised when they said we had a strength and conditioning period. I’ve never worked out during a camp before. I didn’t talk to Coach Meyer too much. Coach Coombs really enjoyed watching me. He coached me up a lot after I did one-on-ones and he liked the way I competed and took reps. He said he would come see me play in the fall.”

2018 DE Alex Reigelsperger

Hometown: Dayton/Wayne

Size: 6’4/235

Offers: Kentucky, Iowa, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, etc.

Thoughts: “The Friday Night Lights camp was intense. Super-super intense. More intense than The Opening Regional, honestly. It stood out that Coach Johnson and Meyer took the time to get away from everything and meet and talk to my family and myself. That was special. They love me and the way I play. They can’t wait to get me back up for games and have me for times to comes. They’d like for me to come up for an individual visit so Coach Meyer and Johnson can have more time to sit down and meet my family.”

2019 DL Devontae Dobbs

Hometown: Belleville,MI/Belleville

Size: 6’4/270

Offers: Ohio State, Auburn, Florida, Michigan State, etc.

Thoughts: “It went great. The No. 1 thing that stood out was the enthusiasm the team has. They said they’re very interested and that they want me to stay in touch with them after they offered me.”

2019 DL Jacob Lacey

Hometown: Bowling Green,KY/South Warren

Size: 6’2/290

Offers: Kentucky, Louisville, Notre Dame, Cincinnati, etc.

Thoughts: “Coach (Larry) Johnson is a great coach that really and truly cares about his players, and is a great person. The facilities of the school are amazing. I’ve never seen anything like it, and the coaches there know how to develop you as a person and as a player. I met with Coach Meyer and he is really interested in his recruits. We spoke for a while and he seems like the perfect coach. The campus was amazing and the education is awesome as well the atmosphere of that school was perfect. Overall cCach Johnson taught me pass rushing skills and techniques I’ve never learned before. I have much respect for Coach Johnson and the entire coaching staff.”

2018 WR Paul Woods

Hometown: Buffalo, NY/Canisius

Size: 6’1/160

Offers: Boston College

Thoughts: “I thought that camp was a great experience and I really enjoyed myself. With my performance I felt that besides Tyjon Lindsey, I was the best wide receiver. I had a chance to speak with coach Mark Pantoni. He told me to keep in contact and that he would love to see my first few games film. I also spoke with the wide receivers Coach Zach Smith, and he told me I did great in camp and to send in film.”

2018 TE Anthony Torres

Hometown: Mishawaka,IN/Penn

Size: 6’6/235

Offers: Significant interest

Thoughts: “The camp was awesome. I loved competing against some of the best talent. The things that stood out to me on top of the facilities and all was how much they paid attention to life after football and careers they prepare their players for once they graduate and football is all over with.”

The wind whistled sharply as the sun began to rise on this crisp Sunday morning. John Wilce rolled over from his slumber, having not slept well at all. His night had been dominated with recalling the day before. It had indeed been an event.

“Coffee?” He whispered to his sleeping wife, Minerva, who had the blanket over her head in an attempt to warm herself from the frigid temperature of the early frost and cooling weather.

“Yeah that’ll be nice. Slap some blocks in the burner too. I am freezing.” She squeaked from beneath the covers.

John laughed as he pushed himself up, leaning above her covered body. “Anything for my little princess!” He kissed the blanket where he believed her head would be.

He slipped on a trench coat slung over a chair next to the door of their room. She was right. It was rather cold.

In the preparation of making a pot of coffee he simply could not rid the remembrances of the day before. He tilted his head sideways as he slipped on his rounded spectacles. A smile overcame him, rather mischievously.

The day before his team, The Ohio State University Buckeyes, over off High Street between Woodruff and 17th Street, at Ohio Field, put on some show. Word had to be nationwide now. He was certain of it. The telegraph he had always surmised was a wondrous invention, though depending upon the news, certainly an uninviting contraption as well. Oberlin come this morning would indeed be in camp of believing the telegraph was an intrusive nuisance.

The day was a cloudy and cool afternoon. The crowds were large – larger than John recalled ever seeing at any game. The stadium itself was at full capacity which bordered on 14,000. But the out-lining hills and roof-top spectators drove the number higher – much higher. John estimated at least 20,000, if not closer to 25,000. Football was coming into its own at The Ohio State University, as it had already exploded out East. It made him quite pleased.

The Buckeyes had scored on their first three offensive possessions. The young, well-touted, halfback out of Columbus’s East High School, Chic Harley, was all they said he was. He could run like the wind. He had total upper body strength which made tackling him above the waist more of a wrestling match that the tackler often lost out on. His leg strength was the most powerful John had ever witnessed in a kid before. Tackling him below the waist was a simple run-over. Chic would score those first three touch-downs. The first was tremendous – from the Buckeyes’ own thirty yard line – seventy yards out. John recalled the play was a pitch out to a flanked Chic. He snatched the toss and was gone. To John it looked as if no one had touched him. The second was more of a power drive from thirty-three yards out. Chic cuddled the ball in his belly and just steamrolled into the center of the line. Men much larger than him were mowed over and left looking up and behind them. The third touchdown was from six yards away from the end zone. It was a tad more dramatic. Fullback Dick Boesel had fumbled the ball as he plowed into the line. The ball zipped backwards in an awkward bounce before this magical kid, Chic, ran up to it, as if on cue, the ball leaping in to his hands as if on command, and he stood in the end zone holding the ball in the air before everyone even realized there had been a fumble. Even the referees, dazed momentarily, looked at one another before raising their arms to signal a touchdown.

Oberlin would be in for a long afternoon. The Buckeyes had 33 points by the end of the first quarter. At the half it would be 67-0 in the Buckeyes favor. Chic Harley would eventually score six touchdowns, and with his drop-kick extra points add another five points to his total. Halfback Fred Norton pounded out five touchdowns, the longest from 55-yards out. And fullback Dick Boesel would have four for himself.

The smell of coffee now filled the small kitchen. Minerva strolled into the room with the blanket wrapped around her. “Firewood?”

“Sorry!” He immediately fumbled through the stack alongside the wall, tossing them into the small wood burning stove. “Momentarily – my dear.”

“Coffee?” She smiled.

“That’ll be sooner.” He reached for two tin cups on a self above the stove.

“You should be ashamed of yourself!” Minerva sarcastically laughed.

“Yeah!” John knew the direction she was taking. “128-0 is a little over-kill…”

Minerva laughed loudly. “You think!”

“It just happened… ah…so quickly too.”

John was almost reluctant to see what the morning paper headlines would be. But he then realized he couldn’t be bothered by such trivial complexities. He had to prepare his team for their Western Conference opening the following Saturday against a strong Illinois team.

John and Minerva sipped their steaming cups of coffee enjoying their moment in their overly chilled house near The Ohio State University campus.

It's one thing to recruit elite talent. But how well does Ohio State develop it?

Ohio State’s recruiting class for 2017 is good. Really good. Potentially historically good, and certainly good enough to make a case for the best recruiting class in the country, even though it’s likely to be a bit on the small side. It also just got even better, thanks to the commitment for four-star defensive back Amir Riep, who picked the Buckeyes yesterday, and the commitment of Chase Young, an elite DE who picked Ohio State on Friday night.

If everybody sticks with their commitment, the Buckeyes will be even more loaded with talent headed into the future. But, for as predictive as recruiting rankings are, they’re not perfect, and an elite recruiting rating doesn’t guarantee success in big time college football. That requires injury luck, hard work, and talent development from the coaching staff.

Ohio State hasn’t been a stranger to recruiting elite talent, especially not during the Urban Meyer era. How often do those players turn into regular contributors for the Buckeyes?

To find out, we looked at every Ohio State player with a high four-star recruiting composite score that Ohio State signed in the 2012 and 2013 classes. We settled on the somewhat arbitrary cutoff point of a .9400 or higher composite ranking from 247 Sports. Those are players who are not just four-star recruits, but typically in the top 150 players, nationally, in their recruiting classes. We then checked to see if they became regular contributors for Ohio State.

Here’s the data:

Player name Year Position Composite Ranking Contributor?
Bri'onte Dunn 2012 RB 0.9537 No
Joshua Perry 2012 LB 0.9409 Yes
Noah Spence 2012 DE 0.9974 Yes?
Adolphus Washington 2012 DT 0.9884 Yes
Tommy Schutt 2012 DT 0.9601 Yes
Se'Von Pittman 2012 DE 0.9565 No
Vonn Bell 2013 S 0.9867 Yes
Jalin Marshall 2013 WR 0.983 Yes
Joey Bosa 2013 DE 0.9809 Yes
Eli Apple 2013 CB 0.9747 Yes
Mike Mitchell 2013 LB 0.9726 No
Cam Burrows 2013 CB 0.9719 Yes
Ezekiel Elliott 2013 RB 0.9693 Yes
Dontre Wilson 2013 APB 0.9685 Yes?
Evan Lisle 2013 OL 0.9464 No
Marcus Baugh 2013 TE 0.9597 Yes
Trey Johnson 2013 LB 0.9493 No

There’s a bit of subjectivity here, of course, but here are the names that jump out as non-contributors.

Bri’onte Dunn (2012). Dunn had some positive moments on special teams, but only had 48 carries over his Ohio State career (287 yards, 3 TDs). He was likely to have a much more prominent role on the team this year, but he was kicked off the team after allegations of domestic assault.

Se'Von Pittman (2012). Pittman flipped to Ohio State from Michigan State, but things didn’t work out in Columbus. After an injury required him to redshirt, he requested a transfer.

Mike Mitchell (2013). One of the most heralded members of the 2013 recruiting class, Mitchell redshirted, then transferred to Texas Tech, only to then transfer again. His brother, Mickey Mitchell, also transferred from Ohio State’s basketball team. I suspect the Buckeyes won’t recruit any more Mitchell kids.

Evan Lisle (2013). There’s still time for Lisle to find his spot on the offensive line, but he hasn’t found a way to secure meaningful playing time, and it appears that he will be passed on the depth chart by younger players, like true freshman Michael Jordan.

Trey Johnson (2013). Johnson was expected to compete for a starting spot at linebacker, before knee injures forced his retirement.

So that’s five misses, with the jury still potentially out on one of them. But Ohio State recruited 17 players with scores that high over that two year time period. So 70% of those players became contributors for Ohio State. Eight of those players are currently in the NFL, and that number could rise if anybody takes a flier on Baugh, Wilson or Lisle. That’s basically half.

Did every single player on that list reach their full, complete athletic potential? Probably not. Wilson, after all, was one of the more hyped playmakers in the 2013 class, and while he has been an important contributor (and could be again this season), injuries and inconsistencies have kept him from reaching that high ceiling. Noah Spence, of course, was productive while at Ohio State, but failed drug tests forced him to transfer to Eastern Kentucky.

But that list also contains one of the best defensive linemen and running backs in recent Ohio State history, a first round pick at defensive back, and several other excellent college players that were the backbone of a national championship winning team. That’s pretty good!

It’s too early to say what the returns will be like on some of the other classes, since playing time has been hard to come by, but there are reasons to be optimistic. Raekwon McMillan was a star recruit who is likely to be a NFL 1st rounder after this season, and several other high four-stars from the class of 2014 are projected starters for this season, like Curtis Samuel and Jamarco Jones. Ohio State signed eight players with .9400 or higher scores in the class of 2015 that could contribute this season as well.

Right now, the Buckeyes have 12 in the class of 2017, and are likely to finish with even more. Odds are, not every player will stick with Ohio State, thanks to transfers, injuries, off-the-field issues, or just plain ol’ failure to reach their athletic potential. But if the early returns from previous classes are any indication, most of them will at least become solid future contributors, and a good chunk could be playing on Sundays as well.

And that’s a good sign for the future of Ohio State football.

Six Buckeyes were selected in the 2016 Major League Baseball draft and have embarked on their pro careers. How are they doing so far?

The deadline for drafted players with amateur eligibility remaining to sign a pro contract was July 15th, but that date meant little to the six Ohio State players who were selected in 2016. All six had agreed to terms far in advance of that day, and have already gotten their professional careers started.

Ronnie Dawson, who was selected 61st overall by the Houston Astros, agreed to a deal for the slot value of his pick, which was $1,056,800. He was assigned to the Astros short-season Single-A team in the New York Penn League, the Tri-City Valley Cats, and has had his struggles. In 30 games thus far entering the weekend, the All-American selection is slashing just .178/.328/.346, but has shown his power potential with three doubles, five home runs, and 16 RBIs.

Joining Dawson in the draft's first ten rounds was Troy Montgomery, who went in the eighth round to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The 246th pick overall, Montgomery signed for just under slot value of $177,000 at $150,000. With the Orem Owlz of the Pioneer Rookie League, the speedy outfielder had a slash line of .341/.453/.557 in 26 games, with three doubles, two triples, four homers, 17 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases, and earned a promotion to the Class-A Burlington Bees on July 20th.

In the 19th round, Jacob Bosiokovic was selected by the Colorado Rockies with the 560th overall pick, and signed for a $40,000 bonus. Assigned to short-season Class-A ball with the Boise Hawks of the Northwest League, Bosiokovic has equipped himself well in his first 31 pro games, slashing .342/.440/.54 with 11 doubles, four home runs, 18 RBIs, and 11 steals. The power is still there, but so are the strikeouts, as he is averaging nearly 1.3 of those per game.

Left-handed reliever Michael Horejsei was next off the board, going to the Chicago White Sox in the 21st round with the 626th pick. The numbers for his deal have not been reported, though as a senior with no amateur eligibility remaining and little leverage, it was likely below the $100,000 slot value for the pick. Horejsei was assigned to the Great Falls Voyagers of the Pioneer Rookie League, and did not allow a run in his firsteight appearances covering 12.2 innings, holding opponents to a .250 batting average, sporting a 1.11 WHIP and a 5.5-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. That performance earned him a promotion to the Class-A Kannapolis Intimidators on July 20th, where in his first appearance he tossed another 1.1 scoreless innings.

Following Horejsei in 23rd round was 2016 co-captain Nick Sergakis, who was taken with the 700th pick by the New York Mets and received a $5,000 signing bonus. While slashing .245/.336/.357 with five doubles, two home runs, and nine RBIs, Sergakis has already had two personal highlights with the short-season Class-A Brooklyn Cyclones, tying a franchise record with a five hit game on June 17th and being involved in the franchise's first triple play on July 10th.

The last of the six Ohio State players drafted in 2016 was standout starting pitcher Tanner Tully, who was selected in the 26th round by the Cleveland Indians with the 782nd pick and signed for a $100,000 bonus. Pitching for the short-season Class-A Mahoning Valley Scrappers, the lefty has made five bullpen appearances covering 12 innings, and has allowed just a single earned run. That makes for an ERA of 0.75, and with a batting average against of .174 to go along with a 0.83 WHIP, Tully is off to a fast start in his pro career.
