Verizon & Android news

Good lord, I just got off customer service chat. I finally got my ex-wife off my phone plan (she was killing me on data). I went to Cricket, which will cost me $35 a month since I rarely need data with wifi at home and work. But I wasn't able to get both numbers ported out before the new billing cycle and still had 2 iPad lines on the account (both were already suspended). That sneaky bastard on customer service tried to terminate the iPad lines effective at the end of the billing cycle so I'd get charged $160 for 1 month of service for 2 suspended devices since I had already "paid in advance." Gotta watch that shit. So glad to be done with Verizon.

And can you blame them?

COLLEGE PARK--If Maryland had any momentum left after a blasting by Michigan last week, it was throughly and emphatically obliterated by Ohio State.

A J.T. Barrett pick-six on the opening drive was called back after a Maryland pass interference penalty, and then, the blowout was on. Ohio State grabbed a 21-3 lead after the first quarter. It was 45-3 at halftime, and that was with the Buckeyes blowing multiple scoring opportunities.

The Buckeyes dominated the line of scrimmage, holding the Terps to a paltry 43 yards rushing, with most of those gained long after the Buckeye starters were on the sidelines, wondering what to do for dinner after the game. They torched them in the passing game, as J.T. Barrett worked a below average Maryland secondary horizontally and vertically, finishing with 253 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for another two, as he continues his assault on the Big Ten record books.

Even Ohio State’s backups got into the action, outscoring Maryland 17-0 in the second half, as the Terps never got close to a scoring opportunity.

It was a beatdown in every facet of the game. Offense. Defense. Special teams, and at every position group. And the Maryland faithful knew it, with an already paltry crowd heading for the exits just after halftime. Ohio State’s heavy alumni presence in the DC area made their voices loud early and often, taking over the stadium.

The only dramatic question for the game after the first ten minutes or so was whether Ohio State would beat Maryland worse than Michigan did a week before. And the answer to that question is yes. The Buckeyes won by 59 points. The Wolverines only won by 56.

If you ask Ohio State players or coaches about this, they’ll beg off the question, pointing only to their next opponent, the suddenly reeling Michigan State Spartans. But even a cursory glance at the box score makes it hard to not wander over to the regular season finale.

Ohio State beat Rutgers 58-0. Michigan beat Rutgers 78-0. Michigan beat Wisconsin by 7. Ohio State beat Wisconsin by 7. The Indiana game will certainly invite new comparisons as well. Michigan clobbered Penn State, and Ohio State...well, okay, you get the picture.

The Big Ten’s eastern expansion teams haven’t provided much of a challenge to Ohio State. In their three meetings, the Buckeyes have outscored Maryland 163-55, winning all three games. Rutgers has seen a similar fate, getting crushed by the Buckeyes 163-24.

Weirdly enough, outside of bringing in sweet television lucre, the new programs operated as near vassal states in the offseason satellite camp recruiting wars, with Ohio State and Rutgers allying against Michigan’s plans in New Jersey, while the Terps and Wolverines worked together in DMV. Both programs are coached by members of the Ohio State and Michigan coaching trees, and hope to emulate a small fraction of that success as they try to make their own programs more competitive.

Those days may come later (probably sooner for Maryland than Rutgers), but this season has shown how far they still have to go.

Both teams still have games to play before the finale, and sure, Michigan could lose to Iowa or Indiana, technically. And yes, Michigan State is capable of giving Ohio State a game, even though the program is slogging through a horrible season.

But it’s all a prelude to the battle for the Big Ten, failing some unexpected upsets, with the winner getting a pathway to the Big Ten title game, a likely playoff spot, and leverage in the next stage of recruiting battles between the blue bloods.

J.T. Barrett said that “it is November, and that’s where the season really hangs your hat on” after the game. Meyer added that “November is here, and we have a big one coming one week from today.” Ohio State is acutely aware of the calendar, and what those games mean.

To achieve those goals, they still need to take things one week at a time. But the rest of college football fandom could be excused if they’re taking a peak at the game in two weeks.

This was fun, but it isn’t the main event. That’s coming soon.

Today’s game against the Maryland Terrapins would feature a new alternate uniform created by Under Armor dubbed Red Ops. Seeing that they are the home team and knowing that Ohio State usually wears white during away games, good on them for trying to at least intimidate the Buckeyes and to impress the recruits that are either guests or that are watching from the stands.

imgres-3-4.jpg
The game started fast for Ohio State as they took the ball 71-yards on 7 plays to the end zone. J.T. Barrett and his offensive weapons found ways to convert over and over again. He hit his receivers constantly hit them for huge chunks of yards. He hit Noah Brown for 22-yards and Marcus Baugh for 11. Throw in some tough running yardage from both Mike Weber and Curtis Samuel and by the end of the drive Samuel capped it off with a 2-yard touchdown run. On Ohio State’s second offensive possession, J.T. Barrett finished a 4 play drive and raced for 56 total yards to score on another short run into the end zone. Mike Weber and Curtis Samuel also continued their dominance on the ground as he broke off a huge run for 28-yards and Samuel broke a 16-yard scamper. The third possession ended in another punt and Maryland did score, but they only managed to get a field goal. On the fourth possession, it was the Samuel show. He was the focus and the playmaker that Barrett searched for and he finished a 4 play, 68-yard drive with a 36-yard reception courtesy of J.T. Barrett to secure a 21-3 lead as the first quarter ended. Also of note, The Slobs gave up a sack in the first quarter, but the Silver Bullets had one as well. So far so good, but I hate seeing Barrett go down, but the improvement is there.

IMG_3770-300x200.jpg
In the second quarter, it became the J.T. Barrett show as he took the Buckeye Offense for 63-yards on 8 plays to cap off another short touchdown score to increase the lead to 28-3. He balanced the output on this drive as he used a mixture of his young playmakers to move the offense. He leaned on a dose of Weber, Baugh and even K.J. Hill who all chipped in to move the ball. Barrett also helped as he converted a third down on a 16-yard rush. Tyquan Lewis opened up the second with Ohio State’s second sack of the game as he got to Caleb Rowe prior to stopping Maryland dead in their tracks as The Silver Bullets shut down a 4th and 1 on their own 39-yard line as they turned over the ball on downs on their first offensive possession of the second quarter. The Buckeyes then proceeded to do the same on a short 4 play, 9-yard drive that was also turned away on downs, but this time at the Maryland 30-yard line.

IMG_3603-300x200.jpg
This game displayed stop, after stop, after stop. Once again, Marshon Lattimore intercepted another pass, bolstering the Scarlet Curtain’s interception tally and giving Barrett another possession to redeem himself after being stopped on 4th down on their previous drive. Weber started pounding the rock gaining 2, 6 and then 23-yards on three straight runs. After a false start penalty, J.T. Barrett hit Samuel through the air and Samuel finished the drive off with another 5-yards run for another short rushing touchdown, pushing the lead to 35-3. Jerome Baker stopped another Maryland possession on a sack that saw him untouched, increasing Ohio State’s sack total to 3 prior to the half. The Buckeye Offense has been on a tear as of late and after they received the punt, Weber took the ball 11-yards on 1st down, Barrett then hit Parris Campbell for 13-yards and Dontre Wilson for 33-yards and then 8-yards for another easy touchdown through the air. Raekwon McMillan is an animal as he tracked down the Maryland Running Back and sent him to oblivion as he forced a fumble on 1st down. Jalyn Holmes picked the ball up securing the Buckeye Defenses second takeaway of the game. Unfortunately, the Buckeyes had an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and they were backed up, but Tyler Durbin kicked his longest field goal of the season of45-yards for their last score of the half pushing the lead to 45-3. The defense is also doing their part and during the first half, they held Maryland to 0-7 on third down conversion attempts, which helps build up their confidence.

images-7-1.jpg
On Maryland’s first offensive possession of the game, they used their third different Quarterback to get some playing time and to change it up a bit but had success with the balance to begin the half, but the Silver Bullets stopped them once again on another time on 4th and short. On the Buckeyes first offensive play of the second half, Demario McCall took the ball 32-yards on a dump off pass. Barrett took a couple of hits and the line needs to keep him upright, but after another Durbin field goal, the lead has swelled to 48-3. The second possession of the game the Buckeyes drove the ball down the field to work on the passing game. Dontre Wilson got hurt momentarily, but he walked off after he got up. Mid-way through the third quarter, Joe Burrow was inserted into the lineup along with Demario McCall and McCall capped off the drive with another score on a 3-yard rush. The Buckeyes got another stop on 4th down after surrendering another. This time they stopped it with a sack courtesy of true freshman Malik Harrison. The future is bright as the third quarter ends with the Buckeyes still on top 55-3.

images-23.jpg
After Coach Meyer sat J.T. Barrett prior to the third quarter ending, Joe Burrow took the reigns and he shows a ton of potential. He has the ability to do both things to keep the future bright at the Quarterback position. Burrow logged his first touchdown pass with a 25-yard touchdown strike to true freshman Binjimen Victor, who nearly had his first of the season last week against Nebraska. This time he broke free and reeled in a 25-yard pass from Burrow for his first score of this year. The 4th opened up a lot of opportunities for the younger players. True Freshman Keandre Jones and Jonathan Cooper have made some plays so far in the last stanza of the game. Jones is flying around with Booker’s old number, 33 and Cooper just logged his first sack of his career. The defense did their job as well as they held Maryland to 45-yards rushing and 133-yards through the air for a grand total of 176 total yards. The Buckeyes will now journey to East Lansing for a clash with one of the teams from up north, but until then enjoy the 62-3 win and GO BUCKS!

The Buckeyes cruised to an easy road win against the Terrapins.

After thrashing a 10th ranked Nebraska team, Ohio State continued its momentum on the road Saturday, easily winning over Maryland for another Big Ten win. The win sets up another big road game against Michigan State before hosting Michigan for the final regular season game.

A sort of odd start on its first drive (and a near interception), Ohio State would eventually regain its composure and find itself in the redzone before Curtis Samuel would waltz into the endzone for an early touchdown. The Buckeyes shut down the following Maryland possession and proceeded to rush past the Terrapins defense with a tag-team effort of Mike Weber and Samuel runs. J.T. Barrett would put the finishing touches on the drive and rush for a score, putting Ohio State up 14-0 early on.

The two teams would trade possessions before Maryland would string together a handful of key first downs, including a fourth down conversion, and use the momentum to secure a field goal and cut the lead to 14-3. Ohio State wouldn’t take long to answer as J.T. Barrett would make a 36-yard touchdown throw to Curtis Samuel to pile on to end the first quarter 21-3 in the Buckeyes favor.

After a highlight hurdle by the tight end Marcus Baugh, Barrett would find the endzone on a quarterback keeper for his second touchdown of the day, putting Ohio State up 28-3 early in the second quarter. After trading a couple of possessions, Marshon Lattimore would come up with a timely interception, setting the Buckeyes up with great field position. Ohio State would take advantage driving into the redzone on the back of Mike Weber before running a Curtis Samuel reverse for another touchdown. The score upped the lead to 35-3 in the Buckeyes’ favor.

Ohio State wasn’t done in the first half. After forcing another Maryland punt, Barrett would find Dontre Wilson on back to back throws for another Buckeyes touchdown. When it rains, it pours, and by the end of the half, Tyler Durbin had added a field goal to the lead and Urban Meyer’s squad controlled a comfortable lead 45-3.

The Buckeyes got an easy defensive stop to start the second half and after J.T. Barrett found Demario McCall for 32 yards, Tyler Durbin would drive in another field goal from 34 yards out for a 48-3 Ohio State lead. After another stop, and a fun reverse to Parris Campbell, the Buckeyes were again in the redzon where Joe Burrow would hand it to Demario McCall for a touchdown, putting Ohio State up 55-3.

To add insult to injury, Joe Burrow found true freshman receiver Binjimen Victor in the endzone for the youngster’s first career touchdown to give the Buckeyes a 62-3 edge.

Here are three things we learned from Ohio State's 62-3 win.

3 things we learned:

1. When Curtis Samuel has the ball in his hands, he can’t be stopped. He won’t win the Heisman Trophy and he likely won’t even be a finalist for the award, but make no mistake: Curtis Samuel is playing like a Heisman winner for Ohio State. The H-back in the first half alone had three touchdowns, one coming from the air and two from on the ground. Samuel had four rushes for 38 yards while catching five passes for 74 yards in addition to his touchdowns. The Buckeyes best playmaker made his presence felt early and often against Maryland, providing instant offense any time he had the ball in his hands.

After the past few weeks in this offensive scheme, it’s nice to see Samuel getting the ball much more after the coaching staff preached about needing to get him more involved. The need was obviously intensified after the loss to Penn State, but lately (read: since the Nebraska game) the Buckeyes have relied on Samuel to provide a lot of the offense, which is really how it should be. As a result, Ohio State blew out Nebraska at Ohio Stadium and rolled to an easy win over Maryland on the road.

If the Buckeyes keep feeding No. 4 the ball against Michigan State and Michigan, good things will likely happen and certainly give Ohio State the best chance to win those games.

2. J.T. Barrett is still on a roll. Barrett’s last two weeks have been superb from a statistical standpoint and from a victory standpoint. First, he lead the Buckeyes to a steamroll of a 10th ranked Nebraska team, and on Saturday, helped propel Ohio State to a blowout win against Maryland. The Terrapins didn’t really have an answer for the Buckeyes quarterback, who in the first half threw for 192 yards and two touchdowns on 13-of-17 passing. He also added 38 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries in the first half.

But perhaps one of the nicest things seen from Barrett on Saturday was his accuracy on downfield passing against Maryland. Finding Curtis Samuel for a touchdown in the first half on a 36-yard throw, and a couple of nice deeper passes to other receivers including Dontre Wilson.

In all, it seems like Barrett is finding his stride at the absolute best time for Ohio State. After a rough stretch the past few weeks, with Michigan State and Michigan next up for the Buckeyes, it’s incredibly important that Barrett be at his best when they take the field these next two games.

3. The backups were able to gain valuable experience. With Ohio State solidifying a monstrous first half lead, it wasn’t long until the backups trotted out to the field for the Buckeyes. Running back Demario McCall was one of the first backups to see the field, taking a few handoffs near the end of the first half, but as Urban Meyer knows, it’s important to have those snaps for experience.

The Buckeyes were ready when Braxton Miller went down in 2014, and then replaced J.T. Barrett when he went down with an injury in the final game of the regular season with Cardale Jones. So backups are extremely important for any team, as Ohio State knows well enough.

The receivers were the next set of backups to come in, with Binjimen Victor notching a reception in the middle of the third quarter. K.J. Hill would follow with a few receptions of his own. Eventually, Joe Burrow would replace J.T. Barrett in the second half as he closed out the rest of the game for the Buckeyes. Corey Smith also got into the game towards the end, getting a carry for himself.

JUMPMAN!

Ohio State tight end Marcus Baugh has made a habit over jumping over guys this season. But then again, we’ve seen plenty of Buckeyes do such over the past couple of years.

This one was just so dang clean.

Baugh doesn’t get his hands on the ball too often, but when he does, it’s almost expected that he’s going to leap over somebody now.

His hurdle was also pretty symbolic of how Saturday afternoon has gone for the Bucks in Maryland.
