Ohio State’s defense is playing at a very, very high level right now

Last Saturday domination was spelled B-u-c-k-e-y-e-s.

Ohio State’s defense hit a rough patch prior to the Nebraska game. Sure, turnovers and special team miscues had a lot to do with some of the scores allowed, but seeing the Buckeyes allow 20-plus points in three consecutive games was something that hadn’t happened since 2014.

Since the Northwestern game, Ohio State has allowed six total points to Nebraska and Maryland. They’ve completely shut down both the run and pass:

  • The Buckeyes have allowed just 380 total yards during the past two weeks after they allowed 400-plus yards to both Northwestern and Wisconsin.
  • Raekwon McMillan, Jerome Baker, Malik Harrison, Tyquan Lewis and Jonathon Cooper all recorded a sack against Maryland. The Buckeyes can get pressure with just their four defensive lineman, but they’ve also found new ways to free up blitzing linebackers and this has lead to a lot of success in getting to the quarterback.
  • Maryland rushed for 43 yards on 40 carries. Three different Buckeyes had more than 43 rushing yards. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Saturday’s lopsided score featured an abundance of great individual performances. Let’s take a look at three of the better plays.

“We stress making the plays that come your way and not trying to go out of control to do something you’re not supposed to do, and he’s the pillar of that.” - Luke Fickell on Raekwon McMillan

McMillan was all over the field Saturday and his performance was good enough to earn player of the game honors from coach Urban Meyer. While he hasn’t made a ton of splash play this season that have wound up on ESPN, there are very few if any linebackers in the country that can match McMillan’s consistency.

raek_1.png

The idea that Ohio State’s defense struggles against the interior run is only true to an extent. Yes, teams have had some success running the ball up the middle on the Buckeyes this season. However, this has more or less been the result of Ohio State preventing any type of chunk plays down the field.

As the above image shows, Ohio State lines up with six men in the box for a clear run situation. They are content with challenging Maryland six-on-six at the line of scrimmage, as they’d rather force the opponent to continuously move the ball down the field than allow a deep pass over their safeties heads.

Raek_2.png

Ohio State dials up a corner blitz expecting a run into the boundary. McMillan’s first step was actually to his right, but he is able to redirect quickly and get his eyes on the ball carrier. If the Terrapins’ right tackle can hold up McMillan for even a second, a third-down conversion is likely.

Raek_3.png

Instead, McMillan beats the right tackle to the spot and meets the running back in the hole. Recognizing the situation, McMillan goes high and drives straight through the ball carrier as he cannot afford to give up an inch. With a one-on-one battle for the first down, the winner is...

raek_4.png

Mr. McMillan. Sam Hubbard joined in on the fun, but this crucial third-down stop (which was somehow initially ruled a first down) was all Raekwon. Ohio State’s defensive line normally does a great job at occupying blockers to free up the linebackers. Even on plays like this where the offense has a clear numbers advantage, playmakers like McMillan have stepped up and won their individual matchup.

“He's a man's man. I love that guy.” - Urban Meyer on Tyquan Lewis

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say Lewis is the Buckeyes’ best pure pass rusher. He combines a plethora of pass rushing moves with acceleration that is rare for someone that stands 6’4 260 lbs. Lewis balled out last Saturday and managed to notch his sixth sack of the season.

Lewis’ jump off the snap is stopped as Maryland fakes a zone read in an attempt to give their quarterback room to roll out to his right. Upon realizing it’s a pass, Lewis attacks the pulling lineman’s outside shoulder in order to keep contain. The Terrapins pulled their guard so he could get outside and open up a rollout, but Lewis beat him to the punch. A beautiful rip move frees Lewis from the lineman and the quarterback is subsequently tossed to the ground like a rag doll.

Ohio State has taken steps in generating more pressure with blitzes, but their ability to generate pressure with four linemen is so important to the entire defense. It’s hard enough for opposing quarterbacks to make accurate throws against the elite Buckeyes’ secondary, but passing becomes nearly impossible when Ohio State can generate pressure with four guys.

"We're like Shaq and Kobe ... He's Shaq." - Malik Hooker on his basketball relationship with Gareon Conley

We’ve gone over Hooker’s basketball skills before, but he’s apparently not the only Buckeye in the secondary that can hoop. Conley is smaller than Hooker, but apparently not on the court, as he and Hooker are reportedly the team’s two-best ballers.

Anyways, the duo isn’t bad on the gridiron either. Make no mistake about it: this game was a blowout. Still, it was a blowout because of numerous momentum-stopping plays that the defense was able to make all afternoon.

The Buckeyes bring some heat up the middle on this fourth-and-one, but the Terrapins call an outside run and are able to briefly get the edge. The problem is that Conley didn’t bite on his receiver’s inside route. Upon redirecting to the outside, Conley accelerates and is able to stop the runner’s momentum enough for Hooker and Lewis to finish the job. Conley’s tackling form wasn’t a work of art, but few corners will show his willingness to dive full speed at a running back. The result was a crucial stop that earned not one, but two fist pumps by Luke Fickell on the sideline.

This Ohio State defense is playing fast, physical and confident. Add in a scheme that is growing by the week and there’s no telling what the ceiling of this unit might be.

The final: 62-3 Ohio State.

Defensive player of the game: Raekwon McMillan.

Defensive play of the game: Hooker & Conley 4th-and-1 stop.

Next victim: Michigan State. See you all next week.

The good news is, probably somewhere good.

Michigan’s upset loss at Iowa over the weekend might have been particularly amusing to Ohio State faithful, but it also unquestionably complicated the Buckeyes’ potential path to the College Football Playoff.

Ohio State, as you’ve probably heard by this point, no longer controls their own destiny in the Big Ten East race. Not only do the Buckeyes need to sweep the Michigan schools, but they need Penn State to drop a game to either Rutgers or Michigan State in order to guarantee themselves a shot at the Big Ten championship.

Now, could Ohio State still make the playoff at 11-1, even if they don’t pass Penn State and make a trip to Indianapolis? Sure, that’s possible, thanks to Ohio State’s strength of schedule, but it would require the selection committee to break (limited) precedent and pick a non-conference champion.

But at this point, there’s still a pretty good chance that Ohio State won’t make the playoff. So what are their other possible bowl destinations? It would appear there are three. Let’s take a closer look:

The Rose Bowl

If the Buckeyes can’t make the playoff, a trip to the Granddaddy of Them All isn’t the worst consolation prize in the world. The Buckeyes haven’t played in this game since 2010 (a 26-17 win over Oregon), and have only made the trip west twice in the past 30 years (the other being the memorable 1997 win over Arizona State). Given Ohio State’s massive fan base, it seems a fair bet that Rose Bowl officials would love to get the Buckeyes back to Pasadena.

If Ohio State wins out in the regular season but say, loses in the Big Ten championship game, the Rose Bowl also seems likely. Should Ohio State lose to Michigan, it’s even possible a two-loss Ohio State team could get picked over say, a three-loss Wisconsin. The Rose Bowl, after all, is not obligated to pick a division winner.

If the Pac-12 fails to send a team to the playoff, it is most likely that the opponent would be Washington, but Washington State, Utah, Colorado, and even USC are all possibilities.

The Orange Bowl

The Orange Bowl is slotted to pit an ACC team against the highest ranked opponent from the SEC, Big Ten, or Notre Dame. We can safely rule Notre Dame out — they’re 4-6, in case you forgot — and given that the Sugar Bowl is already obligated to take the next best SEC team after Alabama, the Orange Bowl slot will almost certainly go to a Big Ten team. If the Buckeyes are passed up by the Rose, this would be the next obvious spot for them.

Assuming Clemson is the only ACC team to make the playoff, the Orange Bowl opponent would be Louisville, which, while not the playoff, would still be fun as hell. In the unlikely event that Louisville and Clemson both make the playoff, this game suddenly looks much less enticing, with Florida State or Virginia Tech potentially getting elevated.

The Cotton Bowl

This year, the Cotton Bowl will select an at-large team to face off against the top ranked Group of 5 (e.g. non-automatic qualifier conference) program. Given the way the rankings look right now, it’s a fair bet that the at-large team will also be a Big Ten squad, and a two-loss Ohio State team could, hypothetically, fall this far. Ohio State vs. Western Michigan might have some sort of appeal, but given the location, and this being a relative down year for G5 programs, this probably would not be an ideal landing spot for the Buckeyes.

It’s also worth noting that these projections are based on the assumption that Ohio State, at worse, drops one of their remaining games. Should the Buckeyes lose to both Michigan State and Michigan, they may slip off the New Year’s Six rotation completely, and fall to say, the Citrus Bowl, where they would play an SEC team.

We’ll have a slightly more clear idea about the pecking order once the playoff rankings are released tomorrow, but if Ohio State beats Michigan State, at the very least, they will almost certainly be playing in a New Year’s Six bowl for the second straight season. And with one of the least experienced teams in college football to start the season, that’s not a bad floor, all things considered.

A hit against Iowa will reportedly cost Michigan’s QB a shot at Ohio State

When Tom Herman left the Ohio State coaches box to run his own program at Houston, one of the end results was former Houston starter John O’Korn electing to leave the program.

O’Korn, who had an outstanding freshman season for the Cougars, had lost his job the previous fall to one of his wide receivers after failing to maintain much consistency in his second fall of football.

After considering Texas and a number of other programs, O’Korn ultimately landed at Michigan, where he was presumed heir apparent to another transfer, former Iowa QB Jake Rudock.

While Harbaugh was able to turn Rudock from an NFL after thought into a practice squad member of the Detroit Lions, O’Korn, some early offseason hype and all, wasn’t ever to quite make the same leap and ultimately lost out on the quarterback job to Wilton Speight.

Speight had been outstanding for much of the 2016 season, but struggled against Iowa’s defense in a hostile prime time environment. And during the Wolverines final drive, Speight took a hit that’ll apparently cost him the remainder of the regular season.

As first reported by MGoBlog, Speight evidently has suffered a broken collarbone and is out for the rest of the season. O’Korn is almost assuredly going to replace him, with former Michigan bowl gamer starter (and fairly persistent transfer rumor) Shane Morris also possibly considered.

Ohio State fans remember how their season expectations changed after J.T. Barrett was lost against Michigan two seasons ago and certainly how things went down after losing Braxton Miller in fall camp months earlier.

While no one’s saying O’Korn can live up to that same standard of understudy performance, it’s worth asking: should Ohio State get past the Wolverines in their season finale (which is a big if with or without Speight), would not having O’Korn negatively impact Ohio State’s playoff case in any way? The Wolverines still have to get past ever plucky Indiana before then too.

The Buckeyes are in strange waters regarding their postseason fate.

After a second straight 62-3 victory, this time over Maryland, Urban Meyer met with the assembled media on Monday morning. Despite all of the speculation swirling around the team’s postseason scenarios, the coach confirmed that the team’s focus was on Michigan State.

After looking at the Maryland game film, Meyer praised the team’s wide-receivers for being unselfish and willing to do the little things, in terms of blocking and special teams, to help the team win. He said that starts with recruiting, and Zach Smith does a great job coaching them with that mindset.

The coach also says that Tyquan Lewis is one of the team’s best leaders, something he didn’t expect when recruiting him.

Maryland champions of the game

Defensive Line: Jayln Holmes, Dre’mont Jones, Sam Hubbard, Tyquan Lewis
Linebackers: Jerome Baker, Craig Feda, Chris Worley
Secondary: Gareon Conley, Marshon Lattimore, Malik Hooker
Defensive Player of the Game: Raekwon McMillan

Receivers: Zone-6
Tight End: Marcus Baugh
Offensive Line: All five starters
Offensive Co-Players of the Game: Curtis Samuel, Zone-6, J.T. Barrett

Looking to this Saturday’s game, despite the injuries and different rotations that the Michigan State Spartans have used this year, Meyer said that they are very much a systematic team, so they require the normal grinding. He said that despite the obstacles they’ve had this season, MSU has a ton of great players. He said the team’s defense looks the same to him on film as it always does.

Meyer said that playing the “revenge card,” after a loss to MSU kept the team out of the playoffs in 2015, depends on the makeup of each team and player. He will assess that later this week for the current team.

Regarding the team’s playoff future, Meyer said that he is currently debating how to discuss the playoff scenarios with his team. He hasn’t addressed it yet, like he has in years past, but the team’s focus is on Michigan State.

When asked about doing something similar, Meyer was unaware that former NFL running back Trent Richardson was used in padded practices for Alabama to prepare for LSU, but jokingly, got out his phone to start making calls for this week’s practices.

Ohio State travels to East Lansing on Saturday to seek a measure of revenge against the Michigan State Spartans. The game will kick off at 12 p.m. ET and will air on ESPN.

The Buckeyes hope to move to 2-0 in their home opener Monday night.

With a 78-68 win in their season opener over Navy, the Ohio State Buckeyes men’s basketball team is heading back to Columbus for their home opener against the North Carolina Central Eagles of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

It was a slow start for the Buckeyes against the Midshipman, who they led by only five at halftime. Navy played a close game, especially in the first half as Ohio State tried to find its rhythm. Navy, a very fundamentally sound team, did not allow the Buckeyes to work their offense freely for much of the game. But the Buckeyes broke it open in the second half, led by junior guard Kam Williams, who scored 16 of his 23 points in the second half.

Matta played 10 different players in the first half, but most notable from the bench was point guard C.J. Jackson, who relieved a struggling JaQuan Lyle for some of the first and most of the second half. Lyle’s 13 minutes played were a career low at Ohio State. While we can expect that Lyle will start against North Carolina Central, it will be interesting to see how he and Jackson balance one another early on in the season.

Friday was also our first look at true freshman center Micah Potter. The 6-foot-9, 240-pound big man from Mentor, Ohio had no points in 21 minutes and recorded just two rebounds on the night. Still, with Trevor Thompson behind him, who stepped in for 18 minutes Friday, Potter will have room to find his rhythm early in nonconference play.

The Eagles, meanwhile, are coming off an 81-69 loss in their season opener to Marshall. Last year, they went 13-19 on the season and finished sixth in the MEAC. Despite losing their top scorer from last season, this is a team with significant experience in the lineup.

The Buckeyes have room for improvement following their season opener. Though Navy presented a formidable foe which makes few mistakes, they did miss 10 free throws on the night, which proved to be equal to the difference in the game (Ohio State was 14-of-21 from the line themselves). From gaining a quicker start on offense to improved passing to fixing the problem with turnovers, it was a good first test for a team trying to break in a new center and improve on the errors of last season.

Numbers to know

7

The number of true freshman who have started their first game under Thad Matta--a number which now includes freshman Micah Potter. Potter is in good company, as the list includes Mike Conley Jr., Jon Diebler, Kosta Koufos, David Lighty, D’Angelo Russell and Jared Sullinger.

17

Ohio State had a whopping 17 turnovers against Navy, which Thad Matta credited to “guys trying to catch with one hand, and a little one-handed pass here and there.” While there is much that can be worked on following a season opener as a team works to get the kinks out from the offseason, the Buckeyes’ biggest pain point Friday was their turnovers. This statistic was one which the Buckeyes needed to work on already, having averaged 12.9 turnovers per game last season (ranking them 196th in NCAA Division I in that category).

38

Points off the bench. With nearly half of the Buckeyes’ total score coming from the bench (mostly from Kam Williams’ 23-point performance), Ohio State seemed to have a balanced attack for much of the night. Three starters scored in double digits, while Trevor Thompson added 11 from the bench.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Kam Williams

With 23 points against Navy, the junior guard led the Buckeyes in scoring Friday night and tied his career high at Ohio State. Even more important, 16 of Williams’ points came in the second half after a mediocre performance by the team as a whole in the first. He was the driver of the Buckeyes’ 23-8 run in the second half which was the difference in the game in favor of Ohio State. Williams stepped up as a leader in the season opener, and it will be interesting to see how he continues to develop in that role early on in the season.

C.J. Jackson

The junior college transfer from Eastern Florida State had a solid performance Friday, recording four points along with nine assists and six rebounds. Coming off the bench, the sophomore point guard played for 27 minutes, displacing JaQuan Lyle who was forced to the bench for much of the second half. Lyle recorded three points and two turnovers in just 13 minutes of play. While Lyle, the only remaining player from last year’s incoming recruiting class, is one of the better players on the team, Jackson could prove to be a highly beneficial complement as the team progresses.

North Carolina Central

Dajuan Graf

The senior guard scored 19 points against Marshall Saturday, leading the team in total points after averaging just 7.8 points per game last season. Graf also led the Eagles in assists with six on the night (he had led the team in assists last season as well). Coincidentally, he was a member of the 15-seed Florida Gulf Coast team which upset Georgetown in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

Patrick Cole

Just behind Graf, Cole, also a senior guard, recorded 18 points for the Eagles in their season opener Saturday. Though he had eight rebounds on the night, he also had a team-high five turnovers. Cole was second on the team last year in scoring with 14.4 points per game.

Are the Spartans close to flipping a Buckeye pledge?

Like Shaun Wade (Virginia Tech) and Chase Young (Maryland), longtime Ohio State commit Antjuan Simmons was on the campus of another program over the weekend.

Per Bill Greene of Scout.com and other reports, Simmons officially visited Michigan State this weekend for the Spartans blow out win over the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers.

Simmons, a four-star rated linebacker out of Pioneer High in Ann Arbor, Mich., has had a decent relationship with the Michigan State coaching staff since the beginning of his recruiting process.

The first program he ever visited, Simmons spurned the Spartans for the Buckeyes in March.

Simmons is currently the lone linebacker in the Buckeyes class of 2017. With numbers getting tight, Ohio State is heavily pursuing five-star Texas native Baron Browning, who will reportedly be in Columbus for the Buckeyes matchup with arch rival Michigan later this month.

With former Jim Tressel assistant coach Mark Dantonio looking to pull more than a upset this weekend against Ohio State, can the Spartans steal Simmons away from the Buckeyes? Stick with Land-Grant Holy Land for the latest.

More All-Americans

Following in the footsteps of a long list of former, current, and future Buckeyes, Ohio State verbal commitments Tate Martell, Tyjon Lindsey, Haskell Garrett, and key OSU target Bubba Bolden all received their U.S. Army All American Jersey during a ceremony held at Bishop Gorman High School (NV) on Friday.

The quartet of All-Americans have played a huge part in Bishop Gorman becoming one of the top overall high school programs in the entire country. At the moment, the Gaels have ran off more than 50 straight victories against some very stiff competition.

You can watch the aforementioned OSU commits and many other Buckeye pledges and targets in the annual U.S. Army All-American game on Jan. 7, 2017 live on national television from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Quick Hits

  • Tate Martell, Brendon White and numerous other future Buckeyes shined this weekend. After leading their squads to big playoff wins, which Ohio State pledge will pick up your MVP vote this week? The poll is now open. Let your voice be heard.

The term "redneck"

#2 is a trick question. Any redneck worth his pork rinds would know that B and C are worth a sh!tpile of money and get them to an auctioneer or restorer pronto.

you're wrong.
'65 was the only year for that body style for the Fairlane.
Billy Joe will let you bang his goats every night if you let him have that bad boy.
just like the one we wrapped around that tree back in '79.

FEED ZEKE!

There was a lot of Buckeye-on-Buckeye crime in Week 10 of the NFL with several former teammates faced off in one-score matchups. Several injured former Ohio State players made their return to the gridiron after missing considerable time due to injury, and one former player signed a new five year deal.

Returning from injuries

Carlos Hyde missed several games for the Niners with a shoulder injury, but was back in Week 10 with 13 carries for only 14 yards. Darron Lee returned for the Giants with a tackle and half a sack. Alex Boone was back for the Vikings following a concussion in late-October.

Career season in Houston

John Simon has been having a great season as someone who was needed to step up with so many injuries affecting the Texans’ defense. He recorded another sack Sunday against the Jaguars, leading to a career season for the linebacker.

Jack Mewhort re-signs

The Indianapolis Colts decided they wanted to keep their left guard for long time, re-signing the Buckeye to a 5-year, 41.5 million dollar contract. Mewhort was the Colts’ second round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, and decided to stick with him long term.

Plays of the week

Buckeye vs Buckeye

When the Saints hosted the Broncos in Week 10, Bradley Roby was often in charge of covering Michael Thomas. Roby finished the day with two tackles, two passes defended and forced fumble, with Thomas claiming 40 receiving yards despite two fumbles.

Ezekiel Elliott

The rookie is used to leaving everyone in his dust, and nothing has changed in his transition to the NFL. Elliott has breakaway speed and uses it play after play, eventually resulting in an 83 yard rush for the Cowboys first touchdown of the day.

The Buckeye wasn’t done after his first trip the endzone, following it up with two more scores on the day. Elliott and Ryan Shazier went head-to-head most of the game, but the running back still managed 114 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, with an additional 95 receiving yards and touchdown.

His last of his three (!) touchdowns was with two minutes left in the Cowboys’ late-game win.

Other notes

  • This week’s ‘Monday Night Football’ matchup includes three Buckeyes as the New York Giants (Eli Apple, Johnathan Hankins) host the Cincinnati Bengals (Mike Nugent).
  • Several teams are on bye in Week 10, including the Detroit Lions (Taylor Decker), Buffalo Bills (Cardale Jones, Adolphus Washington) and Indianapolis Colts (Jack Mewhort).
  • Chimdi Chekwa, who was picked up by the Miami Dolphins in mid-October, was waived due to a hamstring injury earlier this week.
  • Nick Mangold (Jets) is still out with an ankle injury, and Tyvis Powell (Seahawks) was inactive Sunday against the Patriots.
